Caused by a significantly traumatic experience.

Food for thought.
So excite! :D
They'd all been placed in the same small room, so many other people were wounded and seeking shelter that they had no choice. The most critically injured of the group got the beds, the rest of them made due with blankets on the floor. The food rations were terrible, and Asher felt about as impatient as Jack looked. He watched his friend pace around the room. Although they were surrounded by military forces, Asher didn't really feel that much safer.

He sat grimly with his back against one wall. "I agree," he piped up with Jack expressed his desire to leave, "Here, we're just waiting around to die. The enemy--" he'd taken to calling the invaders simply that, "--must be focusing their energy elsewhere or we'd probably already be dead. Those weapons of theirs could've leveled this place days ago. It's almost like they're…toying with us. Maybe trying to see what we can throw at them."

He looked around at the others. He'd underwent a dramatic change over the last few days, after the initial attack at the theatre. The quiet, introverted boy had steeled his nerves. Maybe he was still in shock, maybe he still wasn't recovered from the concussion, but maybe this was who he really was: someone sort of cold and unfeeling. He'd felt that way when his parents separated, when he went and hid himself away from the world. now he couldn't hide, he could only act. So out of necessity, he did so.

Rising from his feet he put a hand on Jack's shoulder to stop his pacing. "Underground is a good start, we should at least try it."
Aw shucks :3
Interested… I've been itching for a good sci-fi.
No bit of fancy alien tech is perfect, or so they tell me lol.

I like the idea of the cloaking device only being fully effective when you're standing still. Small movements and slow movements won't affect if much, but a sudden move or a high-profile action like running or walking too quickly will compromise the effect, you won't be clearly visible, but perhaps a silvery outline could reveal your presence, or a shimmer like when air gets really hot.

The subject of hiding smell and heat is debatable, but it certainly wouldn't mask sound.

As for the shield only being effective against projectile weapons, it's a good idea. It would serve practical uses such as the wearer being able to eat and drink etc. while it leaves vulnerability to melee weapons which gives us an advantage as well as a shared weakness.

And Groth, it was the personal shield that Dr. Rodney McKay found in Stargate Atlantis, it offered full body protection from projectiles and blunt force, as well as inertial dampeners that allowed him to fall from very high places without sustaining injury.

As another thought, perhaps the cloaking shields are only issued to spies, that would make sure they weren't widely available to every alien, because the soldiers would be much more robust and probably have a different kind of armor, though still using a similar personal shield.

Brilliant idea Rax! :DPersonally, I would like personal cloaking devices or teleportation.Or both.IC is a bit dead.

To be specific, my idea was that the hospital safe-zone holds out against the scouts until the main army shows up, giving us about 1-5 days of recovery time in the hospital. Just to clarify. Also, I'm a big fan of this 'use their technology' idea for our escape. I'd prefer cloaking devices, because it increases the tension. It also would make for a tense scene when we realize there are invisible infiltrators in the hospital. See for something like that. You'll want to skip to the 1 hour mark.

Like Derp said the device could be both (since it's obviously a tool for defense, which would give us a significant strategic advantage). Similar to what they used in the Halo movie, but doubling as a personal shield like this nifty little thing. If we wanted to get really fancy it could also be a disguise generator but I'd think the ability to be invisible would probably be most efficient.

The implications of using a personal shield/cloaking device should also have pros and cons, realistically. Like, even though your shield protects you, you could probably still drown underwater, but perhaps when you're cloaked it not only hides your appearance but your heat signature, making you difficult to track with infrared or other heat-seeking sensors.

Just ideas.
