So kinda curious if non-standard races could be played for this. I mean, human, elves, dwarves, whatever, standard fantasy races, but what about like lizardfolk or kobold or gnolls? Can we play those, if we have a good story?

I want to stick with standard fantasy races for now. By the way-what races are people thinking about playing? That would help with the worldbuilding for the village. If most people are playing dwarves for example, I would set the village in a mountain borough-like a outlying settlement of a larger dwarven fortress. If most people want to be elves then treetop villas it is and so on etc.

Bonus:
Possible starting point for the RP. Used from Wizards of the Coast free maps gallery with names and labels removed.

This is a basic check to see if anyone would be interested in a slightly altered game of Lexicon. Players take on the role of scholars and academics writing an encyclopedia of a fictitious world. Oh and you all hate each other. Each 'round' would be one letter of the alphabet, and you write an entry in scholastic fashion as whatever character you invent. Entries would have to reference at least 2 other future letters. (so in the 'A' round you would invent a word starting with a letter B-Z) In subsequent rounds, players would fill in these invented referenced terms and words. For example:

Jim, Stacy and Steve are playing lexicon. Jim writes an entry for 'Fireball' during the 'F' round. In his 'Fireball' entry his character references "Void Smoke" and "Neru the Destroyer". Steve later writes an entry for Neru the Destroyer during the 'N' round and elaborates on "Void Smoke". Stacy later fills in the "Void Smoke" entry.

As you can see the web of references and player interaction gets absolutely insane. Also as scholars, you pretty much hate each other and can flat out call each others work complete fabrication and lies. (or not, but it's more fun that way).

If anyone is interested, all we need to do is iron out exactly what sort of fantasy world we want to be detailing. And that's it. Magic, races, history, everything can be figured out in-game. I would probably need some co-GMs to help keep track of all of the entries, references and help with world consistency. (I wouldn't even be a traditional GM, it's not that sort of roleplay). Entries would be worked out in OOC and maybe posted by one or two players in IC to be linked and kept in somewhat alphabetical order. Thanks for taking a look!

Nansemond Drake, Docks at Port Titanicus

The docks were overcrowded with excited onlookers. Throngs of people pushed against the iron railings to catch a glimpse of the Tychon, The Cobalt Trireme a marvel of aeronautical engineering. Nansemond smiled to himself as he patted his ticket in his breast-pocket. He dove into the crowd indescriminately shoving and pulling along with the rest of the mob, his cane clicking and clacking on the hard stone road and spectators alike.

"Excuse me!, he shouted to no one in particular, slowly making his way to the landing zone. His pack, weighted down with all the gear he had prepared for this venture unbalanced his weight, and he held the leather straps on his shoulder in a deathgrip. The few people that did notice his limp did the best they could to let Nansemond pass.

Nansemond passed a stage set up in between two buildings that overlooked the harbor. An actor dressed in a navy uniform was wrestling with a poorly constructed beast clearly intended to dwell in the shatterzone. Some unfortunate actor in the beast-costume was taking a beating from a blunted cutlass while the chorus sang patriotic fanfare.

Pushing on, the crowd began to thin as the real action of the harbor took over-men dragging supplies and crates, marines marching into the belly of the great airship. He noticed a young man holding what appeared to be a cat step into a massive cargo door and disappear. Nansemond spotted the non-military loading ramp and stepped into line. A bead of sweat dribbled down from his perfectly combed hair. He dabbed it with a soft embroidered kerchief he produced from his coat-pocket. The man in front of him was dressed in a greasy brown frock and held a bag of tools. He chewed what appeared to have once been a cigar, a wad of brown paper and flem stuck to his lip. Damn hot today, said Nansemond nervously. The man ignored him. The line progressed

The clerk at the door waved Nansemond up and took his ticket. "Nansemond Drake. Drake. Why does that sound familiar?" he asked. Drake rolled his eyes. "Everything in order I assume? My thanks then. Where's room? Oh nevermind I'll find it!" And with that Drake boarded the airship.
My character Nansemond seems a bit...underpowered. I don't know if he's a good fit for the direction this seems to be going? Also I must of misread, I thought this was post WW 1 era tech. Was that changed to WW2?
Quick question on Grav-boots. How do they work exactly?

I was thinking some sort of gravity nullification system that evaluates the amount of force the wearer (of the boots) exerts when jumping. It would take training to learn how to use them-no civilian could pick them up and go. I would put the jumping power somewhere around 30ft straight up (give or take a few feet) and as much as 45-60 feet with a running jump horizontally.
If the wearer was just trying to move around a null gravity environment the boots could be calibrated to simulate gravity. The boots are extremely high tech-one of the first things the space industry began working on.

Does that make sense?

Name: Nansemond Drake
Age: 25
Gender/Race: Human Male
Role: Independent Scholar
Bio:
Nansemond Drake grew up in a privileged borough of the capital of the Isilum Commonwealth. His parents, Chester Drake, and his wife Teresa were career politicians and later, amateur Shatterzone enthusiasts. On a highly publicized expedition to the Shatterzone, the airship, disappeared. The Order of Progress declared the ship, all hands, and Chester and Teresa Drake lost. Nansemond, still a young man was sent to live with an obscure uncle who died a few years later.

Grief stricken, Nansemond threw himself into his studies with zeal. He became fascinated with the nature of the Shatterzone, the artifacts and curios, the cults and shadow-lurkers. He began to believe that his parents might still be alive, somewhere in the Shatterzone-and made discovering what happened to them his lifes mission. He became obsessed with the Order of Progress and its work-the artifacts and relics they possesed haunted his mind. Over the next few years Nansemond would achieve only lackluster academic success, graduating 173rd in his class.

Nansemond disappeared after school for two years. He resurfaced in high society only recently, attending minor functions and scholarly debates-Long enough to learn of the newest expedition to the Shatterzone-

Personality:
Before his parents died, Nansemond was a happy, good-natured young man filled with positivity. In the years that followed he became withdrawn and crestfallen. He rarely attended classes. In the few months before the expedition, Nansemond seems to have renewed enthusiasm, characterized by the optimism of his youth, despite an unexplained limp, which he compensates with a black cane.

Equipment:

  • 3 leather-bound notebooks, 1 large for sketching, 2 smaller for recording notes. All 3 have the initials N.F.D embossed in silver lettering on the front.
  • Various pencils and pastel colors kept in a leather folio. Stylus and ink.
  • 1 experimental photographing box, various accompanying parts
  • Leather cloak, hiking boots and waterproof jacket
  • Sword-Cane. 38" long. Steel blade concealed in a standard cane. The pommel is black iron about the size of a lemon.
  • Small snub-gun with 2 shots.

Skills:
Scholar-Nansemond knows more about the Shatterzone than your average bumpkin. He is also aware of the inner workings of high society and academic bureaucracy. He studied the natural sciences at university.
Arcane Tendencies-Nansemond has studied magic (unsanctioned by the Guild) for the past 7 years but was limited to what few sources he could find on the streets-he is by no means capable of casting magic, but given the proper information could probably figure it out quickly.
Fencing-A skill his father insisted upon learning, Nansemond studied with the best teachers money could buy until his parents disappeared. After school he learned how to really fight on the streets and less-than-reputable establishments of the capital city.

Appearance:
A tall, but well-framed young man. He keeps his face clean shaven, and his short hair combed perfectly. His features are aristocratic, with a long thin nose and high eyebrows above two bright brown eyes. His teeth are straight and white and he has a habit of biting his lower lip when in thought. He dresses in black grey or brown and carries a cane, which for all appearances he relies on immensely.
