Unyat survived the conquest of the Old One's homeland and the construction of hell by delving ever deeper into the Catacombs. For how long he wandered the deep tunnels he was never sure. Preying on the foolish demons who ventured too deep. Demon flesh was often the only food he had. Over the passing years Unyat found in a deep tunnel a small colony of
Nglui feasting on one of the Damned who had tried to escape through the Catacombs. The Nglui are extremely aggressive and are capable of stripping a body to the bones in a matter of a few minutes. Unyat enslaved the small creatures to his will with a dark ritual.
Dark ritual and black magics are nothing strange to Unyat. He obsesses about magical theory and strives to learn ever more. In the Catacombs he strove to learn the oldest of rituals, striving for the lost connection to his elder gods. While never bringing his gods into this realm the portals did occasionally allow something through, though it was never helpful and often made the Catacombs more dangerous if that where possible.
One day, while skulking for food in the caverns Unyat came across a Phantom. The spirit was human, or was once, and seemed unsurprised by his presence. she asked him
"Who are you?"
Unyat only vaguely understood what she was saying to him, through out the years he did pick up some of the demons language. What struck him as strange was that she did not recoil from him, or flee in fear. while pondering the confusing information she had spoken again.
“What are you doing down here so deep?”
Unyat tries to piece together a sentence that makes some kind of sense. “I am learning.. magic”
“Oh?” she says intrigued “I like to come down here from the city and explore, spending all my time with demons is exhausting, and you Old Ones are not all that social. I find these artifacts down here sometimes too” she laughed carelessly as if the horrors in the deep catacombs where incapable of harming her. She produced a small
token of what seemed to be carved ivory from a small satchel she was carrying. Unyat looked at the idol surprised and bowed his head as a sign of reverence for the depiction of his god. “Old Ones buy them all the time in Pandaemonium.”
“you know other Old Ones?”
“Oh yeah, a bunch. I work in a store that sells all kinds of things. Old Ones come to buy the things I find all the time.”
“Where?”
“up on the surface... How long have you been down here?”
Unyat ponders this question, he knew there was a time before the demons invaded. As hard as he thought however, he could not remember when it was. He finally decides that it may be safe for him to return to the surface. “Always, Show me?”
“Always?” she asks rhetorically “I suppose I could, I should be heading back anyways. You will be safer in the city.”
As the pair climbed towards the surface Unyat began to consider the phantom's kindness, but could not reach an understanding. Eventually he found the civilization that had been slowly creeping into the Catacombs, spirits owning shops Old Ones trading occult symbols and magical supplies. Unyat had his colony of Nglui climbing on his body so they where not lost, it was his only possession other than his tome of deep and dark magic that he had been working on since Hell was built. The tome he held very close, lest it be lost or stolen. The spirit told him that she had some errands to attend to and left him. Unyat decided to keep venturing upwards and rejoin the world, if it where possible. He did, after a long time of keeping to himself. began working odd jobs to buy the things he needed, food for himself and the always ravenous colony of Nglui. he found an alcove in the Catacombs that was unclaimed and began to reside there, always keeping to himself when possible but careful to learn the language as best he could. He worked furiously on magical theory between jobs trying desperately trying to learn more.
