Steven sat on the ground with his feet in the water. He had been trying to wash the blood off his hands, it wasn't his. There was still some on his face and in his hair from where he had run his fingers through his hair in a stress based response to the chaos around him. He finally started to look at the scene that had developed. He saw a person who must have really injured his leg, and many people just trying to find their suitcases. Steven assumed his had been destroyed, even if it hadn't there was nothing in there that would help him in this case. He took something out of his pocket, it was the return ticket dated 2 days from now. It suddenly hit him that he wouldn't be needing this, he wasn't going to make that plane. This led him to think of the chances of survival. As he stared out into the seemingly endless ocean he began to panic internally. Realizing he'll probably die out here a few tears streamed down his face. He tore the ticket in two and dropped it into the water.

He stood up and wiped the tears from his face, some blood making it's way onto the hoodie he was wearing. He turned around and saw that something of a group had started to congregate. He slowly made his way closer to the aircraft and the rest of the survivors, his mind still racing.

Here are my characters

Name: The Seer (Real Name Unknown)
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Pre-Apostate Occupation: Mental Hospital Patient
Equipment: A medium sized kitchen knife, some fruit, a blanket all carried in a satchel looted from a house near the mental facility.
Personality: A very quiet man, only speaking when spoken to and even then he doesn't speak very often. He usually has a very solemn face as if to suggest past trauma and frequently has the thousand-yard stare as if staring into the very abyss.
History: The Seer is said to see it all. At 16 he locked himself in his room for 12 hours, silently rocking in bed. When the police finally were called to knock down the door he was saying the word "I see it all" over and over again. His parents then believed the best course of action would be to bring him to mental institution. When asked by doctors what he saw he described what he called "The End of Times." The cities had fallen into disarray, covered in lush forestry. Then there was a flash of light and all the trees burst into flames. Then came the shockwave, disintegrating what was left of them, leaving not a trace of anything left of what used to be. Most doctors dismissed it as just part of his psychosis.

The Seer met a friend who called himself The Wolf. The Seer told him of the vision he had. The Wolf had convinced The Seer that his visions were true and that he should act on them and try to stop the events from occurring. Then came The Apostate, this led both The Seer and The Wolf to act on their thoughts. They went to a house nearby the facility and took what they thought to be essential supplies for the coming months including clothes, bags and weapons. Since then they've been trying to find out how to stop the end of the world and restore their hope for the future.

Name: The Wolf (Real name unknown)
Gender: Male
Age: 25
Pre-Apostate Occupation: Mental Hospital Patient
Equipment: Baseball bat, a jacket, and a few bottles of water, carried in a over the shoulder duffel bag.
Personality: Outspoken and a bit hotheaded, never really one to hold back on his own thoughts even if it may be insensitive to say so.
History: Though the reasons for his incarceration are unclear he was put into a mental institution at a very young age and basically grew up trapped inside this place. He never really had anyone to connect to until he met The Seer. Hearing The Seer tell his story made The Wolf very paranoid and he really felt the need to try to stop this at all costs. When The Apostate happened it made him overwhelmed with joy rather than terrified like it made many others. To him it meant he could finally see the world outside of where he lived for so long. To be free was a virtue he had longed for all his life and now he finally had the chance to actually be free. When they got out of the institution, The Wolf really became more of the muscle of the two, while The Seer could hold his own in a fight The Wolf was much more adept at it than most.

The world has changed. A few years ago, on a day forever known to survivors as "The Apostate", all but less than 20% of the human population of earth disappeared. No one quite knows why it happened, some think aliens, others think a mysterious disease, and others think of it as an act of god. In the years since human's mark on the world had fallen into disarray. Mother Nature claimed what was rightfully hers, cities became overgrown and the wildlife that once lived there reclaimed their spaces, humans were back in the food chain, falling prey to the predators that were once regarded as harmless. Looting still runs rampant in cities, becoming routine. Murder is just another way to survive. Many of those that still survive have gone insane and those that haven't don't know what to do otherwise. What happens to the survival of the species still remains to be seen.

More Info on the World

The world has been overtaken by nature, there hasn't been one building unaffected by this. The cities are covered in nature. This has both it's benefits and it's detriments. While it's now significantly easier for survivors to find food seeing as a lot of it grows naturally. This also means that it's much easier for wild animals to survive in the urban areas, with such a lack of people that will hurt them. This means both a lot of prey that humans can feast on, but also a lot of predators that normally would not be a danger in areas like this.

Some villages have sprung up since the Apostate but most are very ill prepared. They lack most basic essentials such as electricity and running water and most shelters that weren't already built resemble shanty towns. People have tried using the new greenery for farming but the lack of modern irrigation puts their efforts back quite a lot, though some have found limited success.

In the case of equipment, most of the essentials have been used up and ammo is quite scarce. While people may still have things from before the Apostate, many people use household goods as weapons unless they were lucky enough to have had practical weapons beforehand or found them in the years since, most of the shopping malls were raided by looters in the days afterwards. This also means ammo is few and far between, if someone is using a firearm it's highly likely they won't have any bullets for it, or just one or two. That is unless they are part of the Children of God.
Children of God

We are special
We are perfect
We were born in the sight of God
Our suffering bodies will suffer no more
We are children of God

This is chant that rises from their camp every morning. The Children of God are a military organization bent on the destruction of the remaining 20% of humanity. To them the reason the rest of the humans are just a blight on society and that everyone not in the organization was left behind because of their own deeds done before the Apostate. The members of the Children of God believe that they were left behind in order to eliminate these people and as a reward they will be deemed worthy and disappear like the rest of the people that did. They are led by a man who is only known as The Great Annihilator, not much is known about him but it is believed that he was in the military before the Apostate and then created the organization afterwards. Members can be recognized by their green uniforms with a large black patch sewn on the back which has their chant and logo on it. As well members of the Children of God have much better weapons than others who have survived, usually packing assault rifles along with side-arms. Rumours have circulated that they were responsible for the shortage of arms by stockpiling them in their camp.

I actually really like Vampire Weekend, they make really good pop music that I just love listening to. That being said I'm not sure if I can decide whether I like their music or the music that Rostam Batmanglij makes. He's only released two songs but they're really good. They're pop but they have some really interesting cultural influences from his native Iran which really adds to the sound. Why won't he just make a solo album already?!
I'll probably make the OOC later tonight, seeing as this is the only day so far this week I haven't been working, then I'll PM all interested parties and post it here.

I'm definitely interested in this. The last RP I ran was a very similar post-apocalyptic world, except washed in psychedelia and mind control. Are the Seer & the Wolf the only survivors of this mental institution?

They don't need to be, if you want to make a character from the same mental institution you can, just don't have everyone come from there.

I'm interested. Will there be any small villages created by the survivors? Villages that were created around the ruins of civilization.

There probably would be, just nothing too elaborate since it's only been about 5-7 years since the end of modern civilization. The most elaborate village would probably be the Children of God camp seeing as that is the largest collaboration of people in the surrounding area.
Yeah I guess so, even if there only is really one faction.
I think that if they want to follow The Seer, they should start off as random survivors, then they follow him after a meeting. If they want to be part of the CoG they can start off as part of the organization.

Well you should post it so we can contribute and/or critique it.

Okay, I'll do a brief rundown just to get it all on the table. I'm playing two characters (Plus NPCs as needed): The Seer, and The Wolf. Real names unknown. Basically before The Apostate they were both holed up in a mental asylum, The Seer was there because he was entirely convinced that he had seen the end of the world, to him the world ultimately ended in nuclear holocaust after most of the world had disappeared and become overgrown.. When The Apostate occurred the two were freed to wander the world. The Seer himself had heard of a nuclear missile silo in Plattsburgh and has decided to go in that direction to try to stop this from happening, recruiting anyone that will help. It's unknown as to whether or not his own visions are just hallucinations or if they are actually.

Other elements that will come into play are The Children of God, a ragtag military operation of survivors who are attempting to wipe out humanity in the name of god, believing that the reason for the disappearance of the rest of the world was the wrath of god. Run by a man who calls himself "The Great Annihilator". As well there are looters and other such undesirables that roam the world, not to mention the wild animals that have taken back their land.

I hope this isn't too terrible, it's kind of rough at the moment but I was sort of going for a realistic approach with some stylistic designs to it. Any critique or if you just think it's not very good please let me know.

Hey, I'm kind of interested in this myself. I have a few similar questions about this. When you say no "crazy" supernatural stuff, do you mean no supernatural at all? or very mild? After all, if the world is ending due to plants, don't you think there would be plant-beast mixtures? Or plant humans? Possibly mind controlling fungus? Not trying to tell you how to run your RP, just asking.

It's not exactly that the world is ending due to the plants, it's that because of the fact that no one has actually taken care of anything in the years it's been since 80% of the population vanished the cities have been overgrown and nature has taken back it's rightful place. So the cities are covered in vines and trees and the wild animals roam the streets. I don't really think think that those supernatural elements will entirely work.

Sorry if I turned anyone off from this.

I'm interested, but I'd like a story of some kind or at least a plot. "Wander around the world and survive" isn't all that exciting. I would hope our characters would interact and whatnot. I'd also like to know the limits at which our characters start off. I'm hoping somewhere between "assault rifles and health stimulants" and "a stick."

Limits and such will be set up in the OOC, I'm still noodling around with a basic plot in my head. I have something but I'm not quite sure exactly how it will pan out.
