Ya'll are doing a crazy enough job at escalating this I don't need to intervene right now.

I'm just going to note down that Samael takes 1-harm (baseball bat), and Amish is spending a string so Elodie takes 2-harm (werewolf claws), with a reminder that 4-harm is where you make one of the death moves.
Jessamine!

The emergence of Princess Shazari of Jedad in her battle-armor from the throat of one of the Snake-Husband’s heads is glorious. She brings golden light with her, caught in the folds of her cloak, and her helm is burnished and glorious, wrapped round and round with images of two-headed serpents.

The Snake-Husband lowers one vast head and lets her alight on the ruined ground, stepping haughtily down.

“What have you done while I was putting our husband to rights?” She asks, loudly— but you almost miss the question, because the glass snake-wife has just projectile vomited a huge dog directly at Adila I, knocking both of them into an awful slimy tumble.

And then both serpents raise their heads and bellow so loudly that the whole labyrinth shakes.

Princess Jessamine demonstrates in this moment her practical experience and her innocent naivety. At once she has an enchanted amphora from her traveling bag and is using the endless stream of water that emerges from it to wash clean the princesses with an efficiency and readiness that speaks of past experience. But even if she knows enough about being swallowed to react with alacrity and sympathy to aid someone else who has just experienced it, it is similarly plain that she has never owned a dog. If she had she would have known about the spectacular shaking arc of water that resulted in her being drenched to the bone and the dog being restored to its true fluffy self.

But immediately upon settling, the dog runs all about in a panic. She seeks to herd the gathered princesses with barks, with increasingly frantic motions as she rushes all about, trying to direct them somewhere... but she doesn't know where. There is a distressed, mournful, panicked edge to everything, a hope that even a creature so naturally trusting senses is distant.
“Put her down.” Why is she still talking? Her throat feels like it’s been fucked with sandpaper. Her nostrils flare as her lungs claw for breath. “Now.”

Autofire mode. Intended to overload her volatile hardlight. It works, but too bad for Maria that’s exactly what Sara was planning on. The brief pulse and flash of the overloaded shield exploding outward forces Maria to change her visual filter settings in case @SARAHPHIM is trying to close the distance. Instead... well, all around them is debris and a ruined shopping district full of Product Display Cubicles. There’s literally no way that Sara can limp away after that display, and after the feedback to her engine during the overload, she’s got to hope that she can painfully crawl into position to get the drop on Maria without being found early. Because in that case, it’s all over for her.

And no kid deserves to watch someone get gunned down in front of them. Doesn’t matter if it’s a gutted shopping center full of middle-classers or a gas station at ground level. No kid. No kid. Deserves that.

[Are you watching closely? On a 7, Sara gets an opportunity to strike and exposes a weakness or flaw, but it doesn’t last long and she’s definitely still entangled.]

"This isn't a fair fight!" said Amy Bentham. "Put me down!"
"Hush, child," said Maria, moving up and taking each corner like a can opener. "I am trying to listen."
"You know what, I think that you are the bad gu-"
"I said SHUT UP!" Maria shouted, last vestige of her cool leaving her. She lets off a short burst of gunfire, rip-rip-rip, to emphasize the point. Hexshells scatter across the room.

Amy Bentham is intimidated into silence. She is very, very, afraid.

But luckily for her, Admiral Bearclops is made of sterner stuff.

He plants himself directly on Maria's face and Amy presses the button to activate hug mode.

The enormous warrior cyborg stumbles, flails, takes her hands off her gun to reach up to pull the clinging Admiral from her face, in that moment entirely and totally distracted...

She flicks her wrist to shut off the glove and catches Sasha before she can hit the ground. She walks several paces away from the weapon. This fight is over. She looks Sasha straight in the eyes.

"I'll be honest with you, I have no idea how I'm going to feel about any of this when I wake up tomorrow. And that's if I wake up tomorrow. But if there's one thing I know, it's that whatever I wind up feeling, she'll be there to feel it with me. She's not the bad guy. And neither am I. And neither are you."

[Directly Engage: 10. Avoid blows and take her weapon (and Influence)]

It is hard to swallow a loss like that. Hard to give up an animating impulse, a thought that's underpinned every decision you've made for so long. Hard to accept that you were wrong. Sasha might honestly have never managed it on her own because when do you find the time to think through the decisions that lead you so far astray? When do you find the desire to challenge your own self justifications?

But isn't that the magic of cinema? To give guidance on moments like this? She might never have done it on her own but she feels the hand of Okada Izou on her shoulder, the strength of Princess Jai'n, the look of enlightenment in the eyes of a thousand defeated heroes on film. Heroes that had to learn that they had lost the argument as surely as they'd been defeated with the blade. And in their shared example she found herself ready for a moment in her life she'd never thought she'd be on this side of - and she knew the kind of person she had to become now.

She wiped the tears from her eyes.

"I wasn't defeated when you conquered me with your blade," she quoted. "I was defeated when I underestimated your ideals."

Turbo Knight II

"Oh, Ms. Knight. You just don't learn, do you?"

He's right behind you, isn't he? Turbo Knight whips around, levels the gun, and fires at… a space which, by rights, should contain a vaporizing little shitstain. Funny, the Magna-melter doesn't normally work that fast, does it? That, the coruscating swathe of robots slowly twirling into plasma, and the cheerful voice of Perseus chirping in your earpiece are all quite helpful in coming to the right conclusion: you've missed.

"Whoops, not quite. Right direction, though! Quite encouraging to see, she can be taught!"

There! Up against the building! It’s a skyscraper-high projection of his smug, oh-so-punchable mug, grinning down at her from in front of a Gears Foundation logo. And doesn't that magna-melter just itch in your palm? Just beg to be used?

"Now now! Let's not be too hasty, shall we?" The projection gives a broad, showman's sweep as the camera pans to a squirming, struggling, gagged--dammit, that's her plan! He's not allowed to steal her plans, is he? He's stealing her plan and her kidnapping target!

Angelica!

Tell me, did you know Dominus was this good with ropes?

This has to be a good show, Brainstorm had said. She needed to really sell that she was in danger. And she's trying! But Brainstorm also cast Dominus as the leering henchman, and as she wiggles and squirms, Dominus's presence is too reassuring! She just wants to sink back into the ropes and let them--let Dominus--take care of things.

Turbo Knight Again!

Your earpiece chirps as you fume. "This is almost certainly a trap, and a poor one at that," Perseus informs you. "Victor lacks the true grit to hold someone hostage. This is doubtless a ploy to make us waste time going room to room. It's what he wants."

And it is. You can see that. But you're not 100% certain. So tell me, Turbo Knight? Do you blast your way through the Gears Foundation and risk that Athena macrotech merger? Or do you take the time to flush him out, clearing one room by one room?

She's been angry all her life. It's a horrible, bitter emotion that has roiled and twisted inside her like a storm. But it hasn't been until today that anger has felt sweet. It hasn't been until today that she's known she'll finally get to make the full strength and power of her rage made manifest, to make everyone else live in the same hell she has to endure. To express herself artistically, as it were.

She can take the time to enjoy this. The satellite has launched; the world is hers. So what better use of her time than going door to door to find that insufferable prick? She's the queen of the world now and this is how she is going to choose to spend her free time. Every disappointment, every empty room... well that will just build anticipation. Anger is different when you know you're going to get to do something about it. Anger leads her on no matter what traps or deadfalls or cunning ambushes might be in her path.

I'm sorry, this is the girl who geeked out about seeing infinity. She got super excited about the quick moon trip, and you think she's not going to intercept a rocket that happens to get her to space?

She's grabbing onto the rocket with one leap, holding on for dear life.

Into space.

The earth tries to hold you in with fire, her atmospheric skin bleeding orange flames when pricked by the needle tearing up into the skies. The goggling fisheye lenses of cameras and external heat sensors roll all about you, fixed on you as you cling to the impossible exterior of this strange amalgam flying machine. Yellow light runs along the edges of it and then, bursting free from an airlock, comes your counterpart. Perseus has made himself an avatar.

The avatar is not humanoid. It's a war machine just as much as the satellite is, an industrial, mechanical horror made of guns and heavy armour and backup stacks to preserve him in case anything happens to his body on the surface. It's tall and bulky like a TAG, clinging against the side of the launching rockets, armour panels glowing white hot as it claws its way towards you through thinning atmosphere.

Two visions of the future are heading into space. One is a future of inhuman dominance, a humanity subjugated below the boots of an alien system that has no need for communication, for morality, for mundanity, for cats. It comes to space with guns and armour and the seeds of its own endless reincarnation.

Tell me, Ferra, what is the alternative?
Adila I!

“You’re the secret master of the Watch?” The Jedadi Princess seems dumbstruck. “I... I thought you’d be taller,” she manages to say, lamely.

Princess Adila is tall. Perceptions to the contrary are an optical illusion caused by the size of her quarterstaff and not knowing that high heels were in fashion right now. She can hardly be blamed for that. Also she doesn't have her helm. This is unfair. Besides, who did -

"Hmm," said Princess Adila.

This is inconvenient.

Especially because the glass snake has been half-freed from the prison you painstakingly made for it, and is throwing itself furiously at the Snake-Husband. While this means they might neutralize each other, their flailing and laser eyes mean that you might be crushed by two hundred tons of stone or glass, squished into paste.

Two?! Well, the Bronze had dealt with this creature handily enough the first time. While they were distracted with each other she just needed to lead away her new recruits and get them to the armoury, then subduing the paired creatures would be a simple enough task - especially without Eupheria there to direct them. Now she just needed to sidle away before...

[Get Away: 4]
Combat was control. Just like dancing. Just like music.

As much as she systematized, structured, and ordered the world for the benefit of her subordinates she herself was not bound by her own rules. Her rules were her control, her music, her drumbeat she imposed that made all the world move according to her order. There was no other way to rule. Hearts aligned, that was their nature. And as the heart fell to beauty so did the mind learn its place and the body submit in turn. This same process worked in reverse. Such was the nature of battle.

A demonstration.

See how she controls the flow of the glass snake as the limestone controls the course of the river? Yielding, melting away, exposed raw. The crystal river thinks it triumphs over the stone by revealing its bare bones, but those bones are granite and no rage of water or shattering of crystal shall wear it down. The river may rage and flail but its actions are constrained, its body brought to heel, imprisoned within the designs of granite. As its body is forcibly bought into alignment so too follows its mind - it realizes its defeat and slumps its glittering head. As its mind accepts her control so in time will its heart follow.

She lowers her staff. The glass serpent is woven into a binding of stone. Each pillar of stone like a needle and the serpent twisted and knotted through them over the course of its many predictable lunges until it is tied back and bound by its own body, a snarl amidst her knitting that soon enough she'll pull on the end of until it resolves itself into another link of cloth.

And now, back the other way. Control hearts and the bodies will follow.

"Princesses," Adila speaks. "I am Princess Adila the First, the secret master of the Watch. Princess Alina is in danger. Princess Kazelia is in danger. My namesake, Princess Adila is in danger. A terrible and -"

Her control slips. Terrible and wicked princess, that's what she should have said. Why was it difficult? Eupheria was objectively both of those things, a dire threat to Hyperborea and you should have seen it before she fell and you did nothing -

"A terrible curse has befallen each of them," Adila said. There was no time to follow thoughts like that, thoughts that turned the earth to cloud and made it seem like she was falling too. "Only together do we stand a chance of breaking it."
Adila!

The snake-wife is smashing through chamber after chamber, going down, down, downwards -- away from Dandy. The bog is spilling out all around you, dank and filthy water, but there's no way it's going to drain fast enough to save Dandy. She's all alone up there, stuck at the bottom of a slowly-draining swamp, and bad girl! Bad! You left her!

The snake-wife is ignoring you, but as she wriggles along, her throat is forcing you down deeper. It's taking all your strength just to stay where you are, running the Red Queen's Race with all your might, and bad girl! Bad! You left her!

You are the watchdog, the Hound of Devilhome! You protect! Bad girl!

That was the last effort of will she had. The last surge of willpower and heroism. There's no way out, no way forwards, no way to escape, nothing to do but feel the terrible weight of her failure. She struggles for as long as she can but the simple reality of the moment is that she is a bad girl. This is the consequence of that. All her unkindnesses are here with her as she falls away into the black.

[Get Away with despair: 6, 1, 1 -1 = 1. Adila falls to the Curse.]
This is about the time for Victor's moment of truth!
It’s not enough. It’s not enough. There’s still debris getting through, too small for her to get a bead on, but still deadly enough to kill those below. She revs up the hardlight generator until it’s as hot as a brand, a coal placed by an angel beneath her spine, and she wraps a net of searing light around the chaos, instantly incinerating the debris falling through it.

Her legs go limp, and only the wing harness is keeping her up as she screams, her nerves hot fires, her hands clenched into claws, as she gives her all and then some. Her mind is a white-seared tiger-desert of instinct. The camera drones swinging around her catch it all: the blinding web matrix, the spears and claws that expertly skewer falling death and send it hurtling into the hell this fallen angel hangs above, and the sweat dripping down her agonized face.

Forget the airplane. This is the new benchmark for ballsiest thing @SARAHPHIM has ever pulled off.

[Choosing to escalate the situation below, and to take Influence over the civilians.]

Amy Bentham!

You are being picked up. This is distracting you from watching the glorious fires of heaven and the perfect angel in the centre of all of it.

"Don't worry, small child," said the statueseque Maria, Maiden of the Black Sun. "I am here to protect you from this evildoer."

"She's not an evildoer," you say, squirming. She's holding you very uncomfortably with a single arm. "She's an angel. She saved me! She saved everyone!"

"Non, I saved you," said Maria in an artificially friendly voice. "She is the one who caused the damage in the first place. Do not worry, come with me, we are going to arrest her. It is like you are my squire, yes?"

"You're not a knight. Knights don't carry guns," you inform her, as much as it disappoints you to not be a squire - but there are rules to this kind of thing.

"You need to watch more cartoons, mon petite fille," she says. "Use the promo code Candybutton for 15% off season one of Knights of the Black Sun..."

*

@Sarahphim!

You're on the ground. You're wrecked. Everything hurts.

Best tiger.

But coming through the rubble, outlined in smoke and ash, comes Maria, the leader of the Knights of the Black Sun. She's an invincible, monstrous mountain of armour and cybernetics... which means that she'd have to be extremely evil to come at you using a child as a human shield. Extremely evil or absolutely terrified of you. Possibly both. Probably both. But she's coming at you slow, looking for the right angle to tear you apart with her rifle, evidently giving not a single damn about how any of this looks.

You're drained. You feel like you gave everything you had back there.

Ferra looks up at the Gears Foundation. No, fuck that, she looks up at her home. And it's got a giant bloody hole in it and is rapidly falling down towards the spaceport, including all the civilians. And Victor is calmly pointing it out. Her cat is in there. She is aware.

She doesn't register her surge of power from her core, or the leap that follows, or the absent, toneless "Thank you Victor, I know". That is her home, her home is in danger, and she is going to be there and helping. She rises up straight through the center of Sara's pattern, her last hardlight sword spread out into overlapping, neatly glowing fields, spreading out between her hands as she rises until the spirograph is large enough to encompass her home.

And she catches the building, and holds it there, her whole world between her hands.

The sky does not fall.

The building sets down heavily on the runway amidst plumes of fire. Immediately people pile out through the front doors, getting to safety as the fire suppression systems start to completely cut loose.

And behind you the rocket roars.

There's so much else that's happening right now, Ferra, but if that satellite goes up then all of this will be for nothing. Everyone else is distracted, distant, busy - you're the only one who has the opportunity to get aboard before the boosters engage and it's gone for good.

This is his moment, and his ideal location: that is to say, above the chaos, away from annoying--

The building shudders, and he winces. Self congratulation later, advice now. Brainstorm taps his headset. "Team, Victoria is on the scene, attacking the building. She is currently insecure about herself and is trying to separate herself from the Turbo Knight name, so feel free to poke that wound as much as you'd like. Errant, the Shogun looks like she's in need of assistance. Ferra, the Gears building is going down, they'd probably appreciate an assist. Sara, you're the best with crowds and multiple targets, and right now we have debris aimed at them."

He gulps, and adds, "Bode, if you're willing, I have a drone and a job for you, please."

[Tactical Genius. That's a 9, unless somebody wants to use team to bump it to a 10. That's a +1 Ongoing for Ferra, at the cost of looking like a showoff.]

Turbo Knight!

They somehow lived through that. Good for them.

Her Magna-Melter is hot against her hand. This is the signature weapon of Turbo Knight, the devastating laser beam that can annihilate anything in its path - and it feels good to use. There's something about the secondary explosions that just lets people know that you mean business. Her grandfather was able to engage in collateral damage like this because he was a lunatic, but her? She could do it because she could afford it. It was entirely different.

She hovers above the Gears foundation, letting the Magna-Melter warm up against her palm again. "You'd better come out soon, Brainstorm," she blares over the suit's speakers. "I'd hate for all of these nice people to suffer the consequences of your lack of respect."

*

Brainstorm! You have the following assets:
- 1x blonde disaster, buff but not a werewolf
- 1x bioscientist and special forces operator
- 1x hottie detective vigilante
- 1x invisible robot sniper
- 1x hacked Squalo-class Tactical Armoured Gear
- 1x BlackSun camera drone
- 1x workshop/warehouse belonging to Doctor Gears
- 1x Professor who knows her way around said warehouse

It's not nothing! That's a lot of stuff! But every single one of those assets is one blast of Turbo Knight's laser away from being a scorch mark on the floor. You need a plan, you need a perfect plan and you need one fast.

She slides to a halt in front of the crippled Shogun. Her head cocks slightly, and her shoulders heave as she sucks in breath. God, this has been a day, hasn't it? Workout for the fucking ages. When this is finished she's taking a god damn cheat day. And no, those cakes do not count. Those were apology cakes, there's a difference. She stretches her arm out to meet the Shogun's outstretched and bloody hand.

"Are you all--"

She doesn't even get the sentence out. Her visor pings danger at the last of last possible seconds and she dives forward out of the way, crashing into the Shogun and knocking her to the ground.

A flaming chunk of building maybe four cubic meters in size smashes into the ground with a cratering impact just behind the pair of them. Errant pushes herself up off the ground and immediately drops back onto her butt with her legs awkwardly splayed out in front of her. She really is worn out, you know? She flips her visor up on top of her head and flashes a stupid, dorky grin.

"Not gonna get a better shot than this, right, JuneBird?"

[Pierce the Mask: 13
“How could I get you to forgive me?”
“How could I make you look at Sara like I see her?”
“How could I gain Influence over you?”]

An E/Mauler is a heavy weapon - the kind of thing that needs to be set up on a tripod and will still jolt every bone in your body with the recoil. It can be used in close quarters in the same way you can swing a heavy machinegun like a club - possible, but you've gotta be hella buff. JuneBird has made being hella buff the foundation of her fighting style. She trained to learn Mr. Big Show's "Oni Warrior" style, and is all about sweeping, zoning motions with a terrifyingly dangerous weapon.

So she's not swinging it just yet. Deprived of the devastating surprise attack she's holding the crackling weapon low in a foot-sweeping position. It's a position with a deliberate, defiant vulnerability to it - there's a way in against her but even the slightest brush with her weapon will disable every system on your person. The only saving grace going up against her is that she doesn't have a single augmentic anywhere on her - they'd make her vulnerable to her own weapon. It's gone in both directions during practice bouts - and that's your in. Duelling against her is a familiar enough thing, an ordinary enough thing, that she'll be able to listen to you in a way she wouldn't otherwise. Begin the duel and take influence over her.

"You still don't see it," she said. The Impersonation Rig is rippling unsteadily, starting to move fluidly between different faces, concealing the E/Mauler as a walking stick, a sword, an umbrella - all making it impossible to judge its exact length and location. "Jesus, Euna. She's hurt you so many times. She's hurting you again and you don't even see it. You think you're going to wake up tomorrow and say 'wow, I sure made the right decision by betraying everything I ever stood for'? You think she's even going to be there when you wake up tomorrow?"

There's a lot of anger in that question... but it's actually a question. She's actually listening to the answer. And she does trust you, even still. If you can look her in the eye and tell her why you trust Sara, why she's worth so many chances and so much heartbreak... she'll listen. But that's only if you really can say that you trust her.

As for forgiveness? You don't think that's even necessary, actually. You're looking into her eyes and seeing concern but not hurt. You don't think she loved you in that way. You think her objective then was the same as her objective now: to rescue you from a bad relationship.
Adila!

Well. This is how you go. You have one claw clinging desperately to a forefang, even as the powerful muscles of the Snake Wife’s throat pulls you inexorably backwards to some terrible fate.

That’s when the swamp explodes upwards at the Snake Wife. There are branches grabbing at her, trees wrapping her in a bear hug, weeds lashing themselves into ropes and thorns nailing them down. You even have one tossed to you, blooming into fresh flowers!

This is Dandy throwing everything she’s got into this plan. She... she might not be coming back up. She’s probably stuck down there, weak as a day-old kitten, tangled up in roots. As soon as she’s pulled up, the plants will go still again, but... but she’s underwater and how long can she hold her breath, anyway???

Go ahead and roll to Finish the Snake-Wife with Sense.

Princess Adila is deep in the throes of the curse at this point. It's hard to think deeply, it's hard to think at all. Instead emotion and impulse is overpowering. She wants ball and pats and to bark at anyone who threatens her friends. She doesn't have the strength to overcome this with brute force, and she doesn't have the intelligence to overcome with a cunning plan, and she doesn't even have the constant drumbeat of the Operations Manual in the back of her head.

So she makes do with what she has.

She opens her mind and channels everything she's feeling up through the roof of the Snake Wife's mouth. She gathers all the uncertainty, confusion, protectiveness and love - especially the love because there's so much of it. She channels the uncomplicated desire for hugs and pats and warmth and comfort that is all the more powerful for being such a simple thing. She throws all of that up into the mind of the Snake-Wife... and then she summons just enough intelligence to add one final detail: the location of the Snake Husband.

[Finish: 9]
Junebird!

Getting shot sucks. Sure, the Impersonation Rig absorbed the impact and the blood dripping between your fingers is holographic, but that shit reverberates inside your ribcage. Still. A small price to pay. You're here to save a life.

You've always hated @Sarahphim. Her stupid arrogance and complete lack of empathy turned you against her long before she dragged Euna down with her and you were helpless to stop it. How dare she? How dare she treat hearts so coldly? What about her cruelty draws vulnerable people in close? Why did Euna keep giving her chances to hurt her? And now? She's dragged her all the way into outright supervillainy! Separated her from her Corporation, her family, her ideals, everything she ever hoped to accomplish. You tried. You tried to stop this.

And you're going to keep trying. You're not going to let that selfish idiot rip something good from the world.

The E/Mauler is at maximum charge against your arm, crackling with its razor lines of null energy, concealed within the false blood flowing through your hands. The injury, again, sucks - but it was necessary. You're wearing the Shogun's face, after all, and if she wasn't wounded then your inability to conjure magic guns would be a lot more obvious. Plus it's the kind of thing that draws your target in close...

It's not often you've run an op against a good-hearted person. You kind of hate how straightforwards it is.

"Errant!" Junebird-as-the-Shogun croaks from across the battlefield, limping forwards, hand clutching a terrible wound. "H-help!"

*

Angel-IKA!

"Fuck fuck fuck fuck -"

You and Dominus dive to the side just as the entire corridor explodes in a pillar of cosmic flame. Dominus reacts like a trained professional - pulling you behind her, rising to one knee, and firing a volley from her rifle at that spooky, levitating black shadow outside. You react like an idiot, putting your hands over your head and wishing for magic werewolf powers. Dominus has to pull you by the arm again as Turbo Knight fires another shot that rips through the core of the Gears building, causing huge chunks of molten masonry to fall down on the starport below.

"This is your captain speaking," said Professor Gears over the intercom. "Please be advised that we are losing altitude, so hold onto something."

*

Sir Lyra!

Your Comlog beeps - BrandControl wants you to launch a heart-felt eulogy for Violet and Yates, currently lying unconscious below @Sarahphim's feet. You don't feel like doing that! You feel like backing away as rapidly as possible!

But then there's the roar of engines. Smoke and fire and light start pouring from the launch site and the tip of the Doomsday Rocket becomes visible. At the same time there's an explosion in the sky and the enemy, uh, office building starts bleeding fire and light. A giddy laugh escapes your lips. This is it. You've done it.

And that's as good a cue to exit stage left as any.

*

Amy Bentham!

You stare up, wide-eyed, at the fire in the sky and the burning rubble coming down towards you from above. The security shutter remains fixedly open. Adults are running all about in all directions, but you stay where you are. You're holding Admiral Bearclops in your arms, after all, and he's a big scaredy cat. You need to keep calm, otherwise he'll panic.

The burning debris is getting closer.
