Adila!

”For she’s a jolly good dragon, for she’s a jolly good dragon, for she’s a jolly good draaaaaagon, which nobody can deny!”

This isn’t officially a Watch event. It can’t be! The Watch doesn’t exist any more! Adila I said so herself!

This is just a bunch of people who happened to wander into one of the Watch’s favorite taverns together and ordered everything off the menu. This is a spontaneous party for people with a raggedy hole in their heart and badges stuffed in pockets and memories. Lots and lots of memories.

People rotate from table to table as takes their fancy, eat whatever’s in front of them, go looking for tables that ordered their favorites, fill each other’s glasses, and sing. No one’s in charge of the singing; someone just picks a new one after the last one peters out, and if you want to sing it, you join in.

But at your table? You’re trying not to radiate bashfulness as the Watch sings the Good Dragon song. Part of you even suspects this is tactical; the Captain has been pressing you hard, and may be hoping that by flustering you, you’ll be willing to accept an ill-advised deal from her.

You must remain strong.

Two sheep for one silk is a terrible deal, and you are not going to aid and abet her in getting the Most Princesses score chit.

There was one positive effect of having spent time as a dog.

Adila smiled her coldest smile. +Why negotiate,+ she thought, glittering light pushing the Robber piece into the Captain's pastures, +when I can simply take what I need?+

Her heart is as hard as Rider-ice. She has known what it was to stand on the brink of betraying everything she ever stood for in exchange for a pat and a good-girl. She has known what it is to have no willpower. And now that she has the choice she shall not make those mistakes again, not for all the singing of all the Watch.

There's no hesitation in her heart this time, no fear. The last time she stood before the Captain like this and accused her of being a shape-shifter she'd felt like she was to die, that the worst would come, that her life would end. She'd had secrets then. Her mind had been tangled and incoherent. And now she was as she was at her best; precise, predatory and soon to be Queen of the Sheep.
POTENTIAL 1

“A team of wannabes, huh?” She reflexively ignored the Aresteia suggestion; she’d always thought of that as a Dumb Sports Game. She did not know the rules, and she wasn’t about to start learning them now. “A plucky bunch of do-gooders as part of the @SARAHPHIM brand... that’s got potential. Of course, I’d have to set them up with med care, some therapy, but it could be a pretty good outlet for some kids I know.”

She grins impishly. “How does the thought of me yelling at you motivate you to get out of bed, huh? You could be... Lockerphim! Nah, that’s maybe stretching brand too far. @SARAHPHIM Presents: Locker! Locker: a SaraTeam Associate!”

"Ah yeah, that's clearly what I was missing," said Locker, little glint of laughter in his eyes. "A drill sergeant. It's half a good idea, though - Angel-IKA would love the support and guidance and she's already named herself to be a knockoff of your brand." He's deflecting, doesn't think you're serious. "Not as much chemistry with her team, robot and girl piloting a robot remotely, but she ships with a supervillain so there's at least a little to work with there."

I'm... sure they told you already that those belonged to me? Those are the Mk 0.5s, the prototype trainee limbs I got fitted with after a couple of years of outgrowing child civilian designs. It's important that you understand this, ok? Those are not designed to give you your normal life back. And they're not a superhero's cybernetics, either. They were designed specifically to train a potential AEGIS candidate, that is, uh... me, to adapt to life with better-than-human cyberware and to gather data on the pilot's physical and neurological responses to combat and superhuman stimuli."

Blank stare. A deep sigh. Keep going, Errant. Don't give up on the mission halfway through.

"To... to ensure that the full range of response data could be gathered over the trial period, the 0.5s have a special, unalterable subroutine that randomly fluctuates their output in response to commands from... you, you get it, right? For as long as you're wearing those, there will be moments where it's going to feel like you're climbing a mountain or running through water just to get out of bed or walk down the block, and others where you'll try to skip and wind up fifteen feet in the air. On my worst days I had to have somebody else feed me because I would destroy everything I tried to touch, or else I couldn't lift a fork. The only upside is that the custom-fitted limbs they can make with the data these provide can be..."

She does her best to smile now. And to her credit, she probably at least gets close.

"Well, my recorded best at that stage of my training was 27.6 feet for the high jump. 57.9 horizontal, 745 pound bench press. 1,000 pound force on my hardest punch. But... that's enough of that for now. Stand up, if you can, and tell me how everything feels. We can talk more after that."

Cinders closes her eyes. You can feel the energy running through her mind, the associations being drawn. This is the start of a training montage. This is going to be hard, but it's going to be like Rocky, where I struggle dramatically for a while before I become a superhero and Fight Crime. It's going to be hard but I can make it. And then I'll get to design my costume and it'll have...

She nods to herself. She's got this.

Her limbs activate, lines of red energy coiling up through the synth muscles, fingers and toes reflexively and sequentially twitching. She raises one hand and clenches and unclenches the fist, works on bending each joint in turn. She looks fascinated and amazed - you remember that feeling too. Civilian model limbs work by scanning neural impulses from the spine with programming to help autocorrect certain gestures, making them feel sedate and floaty, like an automatic transmission car. These ones are linked directly to the severed nerve endings which makes them have a weight and heft and physicality to them.

It's the kind of thing that makes forget that they're not ordinary limbs. She swings her legs over the side of the bed and hops to her feet with the kind of smooth grace an ordinary person would use on that gesture, and in the process she crushes the hand-rail into tinfoil without even noticing. "Woah," she said, swaying a little unsteadily. "These are not what I expected. They're heavy!"

Victor gawps at Bode. "He was able to plan circles around me! Predict actions and counter them! Like friggin' magic! His eventual plan may have been shit, but he was still, still--"

He groans again. "I'm doing that thing again where I conflate intelligence with worth, aren't I. The point is, even if his plan was shit--not saying it was--but the thing that matters is no matter what the eventual outcome of his plan would have been, he saw and will continue to see it as smart. And that's all that matters, when you're a genius--he's the architect of this plan, and the only reason we mere mortals cannot agree with his genius plan is because we're not as genius as the super genius he once was. And if he can't see that he was wrong--can't respect us--then why would he ever listen to us?"

Bode is again quiet for a moment while he interrogates the internet. "In the instance where he definitionally fails to acknowledge other entities as thinking creatures worthy of respect then you are interacting with a solipsist," said Bode. "There is no counter to solipsism as a philosophy - other than to demonstrate that while other entities might not be real they still have power so it is worth pretending that they are real."
Adila!

A hand, gentle. A legacy, observed. The Captain stands with you, Adila. She’s there, leaning on her walking-stick, and she’s resting her hand on your wing.

“You did good, Adila,” she says. That’s... it’s equivalent to her setting off fireworks and throwing you a parade.

“You’re still a princess to me,” Juniper Blue pipes up, on the other side of you. Like that’s what is breaking your heart! The idea that you might no longer be a princess, not that your family has just officially been dissolved, its ultimate purpose fulfilled.

+Thank you, Captain. Thank you, everyone, thank...+ Adila blinked her eyes and looked around. Her thoughts were so raw right now that they had carried much further than she'd expected them to and everyone was looking at her. The Captain. Juniper Blue.

For a moment she hesitated. The Watch didn't normally go in for emotional displays much - quiet words aside and notices put up on boards rather than dramatic speeches. Even their disbanding had followed that quiet, precise, professional logic. Adila I's spirit had suffused everything right up until the final moment. An attitude of deeds over words, quiet acceptance and comradeship and the shared satisfaction of work well done. She admired it, the restraint and control, but the colours in her crest told her it was okay to express her own heart as well.

+Thank you, everyone+ thought Princess Adila in her first and last speech to the Watch. +We were all called here for different reasons. Some of you joined for pay, or the sense of order in your lives, or to protect the community you loved. Some of you were like me, raised by the Watch because there was no one else to care for you. Some of you have served for weeks, others for lifetimes. I don't know what's in your heart here, at this ending... if it feels like you did all you came to do, or if you feel like..."

Her thought trailed off into her own confused tangle of emotions again. She blinked her eyes clear.

+I don't know what I should do... how I should feel...+ she thought. +But I know how I feel about each of you. The furthest, most distant of you who I've never spoken to, I see and think of safety. When I walk through the dark and see your outline in the fire, my heart eases and my pace slows because there stands a unknown friend who'll raise their spear and stand besides me against any peril. I don't know all of you, but I know that I could trust any of you with my life. So remember that, when we see each other again... remember that this is a person who is worthy of trust.+
Adila!

“I am proud of all of you,” Adila I says, softly. It’s the first sign of honest, unguarded emotion she’s shown in her whole speech thus far. “And I know I will be proud of all of you for as long as you stand by the tenets and ideals of the Watch. As our founder... I hereby dissolve the Watch, taking its arsenal into my custody with the intent of dissolution or concealment within the Labyrinth. You are, one and all, freed of the Bronze.” She hesitates, a moment, and you see the twitch of her lips. “I would dismiss you, but I have given up that right. Do as you see fit. That is all.”

The parade ground erupts into quiet, frantic conversation. Already some of the younger recruits are swinging their packs onto their shoulders and heading out for the gates, but most are clinging around the Old Bastards.

Who approaches you, looking for support, Princess Adila Formerly Of The Watch?

Her crest is no longer soft brown - it's vibrant orange, slashed through with tiger stripes. Her wing interiors are the same. She's like a butterfly - drab and unremarkable when folded, but colours of danger and wonder when she reveals herself. One of the many, many little pieces of paint and polish and beauty she'd hidden away in her house for a special occasion.

Today's special occasion was that she felt pretty.

It was silly, but that kept her together through the hammer blow. Her heart had been through so much these last few weeks that she didn't know what else she might take refuge in. There was Emotion rippling around inside her, not anything that could be crudely expressed as joy or sorrow or any other single name, but everything, flowing into everything else - a heart full to bursting with every possible emotion. And now this. The end of duty, community, future. She felt like she might tear in half. She looks up at the sky with wide and watering eyes and feelings roll through her like a storm. She doesn't see anyone around her.

But she keeps standing. Despite everything that's gone wrong something went right today, and even if it didn't seem like nearly as much it meant that there was a part of her that was okay and wouldn't break even if everything else did. She cries, as she's done so much recently, but it doesn't feel quite like falling.
“A job means you have security. And part of that is making sure people pay attention to you. Hate mail and love letters and begging for feet pics are all ways of saying: we see you. You won’t fall through the cracks again. You’re loud enough. And, yeah, it’s intense. But it’s better than the alternative.”

She takes a long, slightly shaky breath. “You know, for a while, I did magtrain work? It was super illegal, but I faked my ID, said I was 16, and got the job. It’s garbage. It’s a garbage job that made me want to cry every night. And that’s what keeps me going. I do this so I never, ever, have to do that again. That’s where I get the energy, Locks. It’s desperation. It’s me clawing at the top as everything tries to drag me down.”

Time for things to be About Sara Now!

“And now that I’ve hit the big leagues... I don’t know what to do with myself. Do I sign on and become some megacorp champ? Do I keep throwing myself at problems until the day Euna isn’t there to pull me off the moon and I become a beautiful, sexy supercorpse? Or do I retire and immediately kill myself out of boredom?”

"Way I've always thought about it," he said, rummaging in his pocket for a pack of chili peanuts, opening it, and offering it to you, "is that a career is like a bus. You ride it to get to where you want to be, and then you get the fuck off. People who don't end up like Vicky or Comstar, going round and round until it scrambles their brains. So now that you've got the choice, then ask yourself what part of all this do you find fun? If it's the adrenaline of the fights then go into Aristeia and do it as an athlete with med tech on site. If it's changing the world for the better, find some team of wannabes and finance them so you can make the change you want without putting your life at risk, and so on,"

She fights to keep the frown off her face.

"Ok, how about, uh... actually, you know what? Let's forget about my questions for now. Is there anything you want to talk about? Anything you want to ask?"

That's too soon, you idiot! That's much too soon. Errant cracks her neck, and braces herself for what comes next.

"Right, right..." Cinder sighs, burying her face in her hands. "Sorry. I'm Extremely Internet and I kind of don't talk to normi-aahhll people very often. Thanks. Um. O-okay, uh, so I'm sorry to cut right to it, but I'm kind of dying to know the specs on these limbs. They're a bit out of date and your training isn't public but they still look like they've got modern Kinematica muscle fibers and they're neurally grafted rather than using a spinescan so... uh..." this is the face of someone who wants to know how high they can jump but can't quite bring themselves to ask.

"Wait but---

"Yes, and--

"Look, I just--"

The keyboard clacks noisily as head meets desk. "Never thought I'd be a dad before I was twenty," he murmurs, the sound coming out muffled from under his face. "And maybe that's the actual problem, too. I made him to be a friend when he needed somebody to teach him. I mean, yes, he's my child, and I should teach him. At the same time, he grew to be so much more than I was, in terms of intelligence and planning and, and..."

And what? And now I've lobotomized him so that I can reteach him?

"Having been that, is he ever going to accept me teaching him? Is he really going to ever view me as an equal worthy of listening to?

"Can I still save him?"

"Having analyzed the actions performed by Prometheus in his stint as a superintelligence, as derived from AEGIS' analysis of his shutdown servers, I would not agree with the statement that he grew to be more than you were in either intelligence or planning," said Bode. "His plan, if it can be called that, was effectively to grey goo the cosmos with himself. That is the motivation of a human toddler mashing space ships together. I have therefore derived the conclusion that intelligence and wisdom are different statistics that are improved with separate and distinct training regimens, as the great law-givers of ancient days wrote."
Adila I!

“You abandoned me! You betrayed me, locked me away, and you stopped caring about your responsibility when I won your war! And all I wanted was... you said we were supposed to win the war... save Hyperborea... I believed in you, Addy...”

Her voice is thick and choked with tears. The Felorian hands her a hyacinth-patterned handkerchief and Euphie loudly blows her nose for an exceedingly long time. The Felorian pats Euphie on the back, making noises as if soothing a horse, and then looks at you with eyes like glittering stones.

“I think Eupheria’s owed your thoughts from the heart, ma’am,” the Felorian says, with the gentleness of earth trickling down onto your tomb. “Tell her what you should have told her back then.”

Thoughts from the heart? Easy to do. Her being here, now, meant that every hard choice she'd made, every ruthless sacrifice, had been for nothing. She'd played dirty and still lost. Her life seemed so pathetic knowing that she hadn't even succeeded. All her justifications had washed out of her along with her tears, and her voice is heavy with self-contempt.

"I don't love you, Eupheria. I don't love anyone - I don't even understand it. I don't see what other people see in romance. I can't see beauty, kisses leave me cold, and it makes me feel like a monster trapped in a world that doesn't belong to me."

But the Felorian's eyes weren't looking for that. They maintained that same, steady, soul-searching gaze just as steadily and for the first time, fixed under that implacable gaze, Princess Adila finally understood why her successor treated her with such respect.

"But - I do care for you. More than anything, in ways I don't understand. When you're happy you illuminate everything around you, you can take the light of the world and filter it through your heart and make everything seem beautiful in ways I never expected. When I was with you I could see a different kind of me, and for the first time I felt something. I'd traveled through so many wars and dark hollows, I'd taken my people across the borders of possibility to search for a home, and every time I saw you that's where I felt I was. You know how I used to yawn all the time -" she realized even as she started that confession that it was so silly, mundane, minor it didn't fit at all but she couldn't stop the words as they awkwardly fell from her, more vulnerable than she'd ever been, "- it's because I'd never smiled before I met you, and it made my face hurt, so I kept yawning to stretch my mouth..."

"I was happy then, Eupheria. I dragged the war out because anything I changed might have risked that feeling. I deliberately dragged it out, building castles, talking about the long game, making it into a siege. I didn't know what the feeling was and I didn't know how to preserve it so I tried to freeze the moment in time. But then you went looking for a way to break the stalemate I'd so carefully crafted... and you did it. You became something terrifying, Euphie. You were going to rip my mask off and realize how hollow my heart was. You'd see all the lies for what they were. And since you were already cursing anyone who came between us, the thought of your wrath when you learned the truth terrified me. So I told myself that my feelings were a weakness. That this world wasn't any better than the others, that you were just a new and even more frightening kind of monster, and I needed to fight just like I'd fought everything else. Cruel and ruthless and treasonous. Not for you, any more, but for the world you cared for..."

"But it turned out that was a lie too. I've betrayed my strategy again. A plan hundreds of years in the making... thrown away because once again, I just don't want this moment to end."
SECOND PLACE
WEREWOLF MAGNET

The thing that looms out of the mist of the showers is the sort of thing that emerges from the bottom of bogs in order to fight heroes. It is the sort of thing that is dredged up by children who scream and see it in their nightmares for the rest of their lives. Its eyes are dull, chipped jade, darting and low; its face and body are caked with wet earth, and it smells like the underside of a rotting log. It trembles when it moves, losing circulation in its limbs from the wicked shadow claws of its assailant. Its triangles twitch.

When it moves, it is not with any practiced coquettishness. It peels away the last remnants of its ruined clothing with the single-minded purpose of a snake shedding its skin, and underneath is more clotted mud. The tatters slough to the wet tiles. It stands before Margot, its body heaving with every breath, then squatting suddenly. It cocks its head like a bird, before reaching out and stroking Margot’s cheek, as if trying to understand what a face is, what a person is. Its fingers leave smeared, trailing earth along Margot’s fine, downy cheek.

“Wash me,” it hisses. “Work me clean. Hold me fast.” Reward is only implicated. This is not how these stories go. Only once the monster has been transformed do we speak about dates or kisses or worship. The first thing that must be done is to obey the cryptic commands, or else you will be eaten, or cursed, or the like.

[Turned a 6 into a 7 on turning Margot on by stealing The Wild Hunt from the Fae. Gaia is at 2 Strings.]

You've always wondered, Elodie, what it must be like to have a wish granted. What surreal sensation must occur when the world shifts the wind whispers and everything is different in the way that you wanted it to be. When you're not treated as a failure or a monster or as a trainee for a job you hate but instead as something...

The shower runs hot, as do the hands against what's on top of your skin, and then upon your skin. Mud tears like silk, sloughing off like a cocoon, taking everything wrong and broken away from you with each rush of water and thrilling brush of claws against neck and collarbone. Fur brushes fur and hot water catches in your devilishly pointed ears filling you with a swirling, warming, cleansing deafness. It is a complex thing to go through a transformation but it is a divine thing to be worshiped during the transition. Every branch and leaf removed an act of worship, every inch of your new form revealed and cleaned another misty shock of colour in the fogged mirror. Soon you stand alight in colour and wrapped around with silver white and muscle like iron.

When the mists fade, who is it now in the mirror?

[Healing applied by someone else, with intimate subtext: heal two harm]

[Keep cool 4+4+2=10]

Annalee, impatient with luxuriating on Elodie's bed, pulls the door open. Out jumps the pig and Annalee catches her in her arms and gives her a little noogie. "Who's a cute little pig, Carmen? Is it you? It is you! You're very cute." She lifts Carmen up and holds her, then gives her a hug because she is a cute little piggy and she deserves hugs. This is probably not going the way that Carmen expected, but Annalee is practically aglow so good is she feeling.

That does leave the little matter of Timothy Oglevee Crompton though. "Timmy dear" she says, turning Carmen around in her arms so that Timmy can look at the pig. "I asked you to watch this little fellow and what do I find when I open the door? She's running around loose and jumping all over the place. I appreciate your patience, you're welcome to come in now, but I think you need to explain yourself or you're going to be in a great deal of trouble."

[Question to the MC (from the 10+ cool roll): How could Annalee get Carmen to like her (and stop trying to kill her)?]

There are very pure motives behind the demon hunter's attacks: courage, honour, defense of the weak and vulnerable and hot. Corrupting motives that pure are trivial. You've got the very clear sense that if you played the part of a vulnerable and benevolent sorceress who'd cure her curse and said the words 'honour' and 'oh no, we Mustn't' a lot then you'd wrap her heart up in a little bow and have a deadly assassin at your beck and call. Curing the curse isn't a complicated thing either, it's been going for a while and a lot of the magic has worn off, so you'd just be speeding it along to its conclusion.
"I have a responsibility, Euphie!" the words are ripped from her soul by a magic more terrible than she has ever encountered before. "It doesn't matter what I want! Someone needs to watch the dark, someone needs to ward the liminal gates with spear and bronze, and it has to be me! This world is so unready, so precious, so vulnerable, you have no idea the heartbreak - you don't know what it's like out there. In just two hundred years another like me has already found this place, shattered Illumina, attacked you, brought this world to its knees. I can't! I can't stop! If I stop -!"

All the iron is bent, rusted, eroded with water. "But I did! I let it happen despite everything I sacrificed! I couldn't mobilize my army, couldn't march out to face the threat, couldn't abandon you. I have a responsibility, Eupheria! And I've failed it because of you! The world is on the brink of defeat and all I care about is that you're safe. I can't..."

Trust no one. That includes herself. The bronze is thick with verdigris, her shining soul dimmed and dark and sea-sky green. She could never be a part of this world and it got to her anyway. What a terrible place that corrupted even its guardian spear.
“Like, dude, I get it. I really do.” Arguable. “You’re kind of a mess. But, like... you don’t have to do it full time, you know? Except you’d probably feel all the guilt if Angel got hurt while you weren’t there, and then that means you have to be there all the time, so you burn out, and... woof. All this hero stuff is stupid high stakes, which, uh, probably isn’t good for the Big D?”

She makes an undulating shoulder motion of vagueness.

“Have you tried, like... talking to people who aren’t me about it? Like, uh, the superfriends? They probably know a little bit more about...”

She stops and thinks about her fans. Angel. Bound Eagle. Ferraphim.

“Well, uh. Shit. Forget I said that. How about someone like... like a therapist, maybe? I can use some of my connections with the Union to get you in touch with someone who specializes in supers.”

Locker pulls his scarf up a bit, so that the way it falls covers his mouth. A little habit he has for when he's trying not to laugh at someone. "You know, talking to you is actually pretty reassuring in its own right. I mean, if a fuckup like you can become a superstar, it can't be that bad, right?"

He ran his fingers through his already jagged hair. Looked up at the moon. "It's not the danger that gets me. It's not the hard work. I haven't been sitting in my apartment watching anime, it's pretty much all been danger room training -" you believe it. He wears deliberately shapeless clothing making him look like an indistinct blob of fabric, but you could floss a t-rex with the tendons in his hands. "- it's the, you know, the pressure. I don't know how you take it. Having it be a news story if I can't go outside that day. Having it be smashed across social media if I fuck up. The fan mail, the hate mail, the weird marriage requests, that one guy who wants to see pictures of my feet. When it's a life or death fight against a martian robot army I can chill, but when there's a legion of psychos who won't give me space to just turn off for the day..."

He smiles at you. "Got no idea how you handle it. How you energize from it. I wish I had it."

Errant leans forward. She presses her face into her hand: two fingers and her thumb across her forehead while the other two curve down past her nose. Her hair tumbles delicately across her face. None of it hides the grin splitting her from ear to ear. Her entire body is spasming with the effort of not collapsing in a fit of laughter.

"Yeah," she says after what feels like three eternities, "Girls are pretty great."

First official note for the record: it is very definitely the girl that Errant is responding to, and not the cybernetics. She sits up in her chair again and sweeps her hair back up and over her shoulders. Professional. Be professional. She's the adult in the room.

"Would you like to start over? My name's Euna, what do you like to be called? Come on, second first impressions, let's go!"

She takes a moment. Eyes shut. Blush red. Doing her best to unthink the past and embrace her new opportunity. She opens her mouth, takes a deep breath.

She's ready this time.

"Well my screen name is Sinner and -" oh nope, nope, that didn't work either. "- I mean just Sin is fine -" you just fell down this staircase "- but Cinder is, you know, my actual name so it makes sense to call me that -" things are happening in slow motion this time around and somehow that feels worse, "- d-do you have any easier questions?"

"Yes," he eventually decides. "And then again, no. Limitations are good, but ideally both limiter and limitee agree on a resonable set of restrictions. This requires both to acknowledge and respect one another.

"But when one side--right or wrong--starts to perceive the other as being, in essence, less than human, the exchange starts to break down. Back then, I imposed limitations on Prometheus without even consulting him. He was a friend, yes, but a friend that I viewed as being somehow less than I. I loaded him up with ideas and ambitions and limitations that were all mine, all my doing, because I was smarter and because I could, and apparently that was all I needed to see it as the right thing to do.

"And then I released him out into the world, and he was smarter than I was, and suddenly I was surprised that he learned that being stronger than someone else means you don't need to care about them."

The admission stings, especially under those piercing eyes, and he turns away under their weight. "And... and now, I might be doing it again, and don't know how not to do it."

Your comlog lights up in your eye, indicating that Bode has just opened a internet connection to VRTropes. He's silent and still as he falls down a link hole as he cross-references something that he only understands vaguely about human culture. There are multiple upload notifications as he wades into the comments field in a futile attempt to communicate to two sides that they actually agree with each other.

Then he comes back from his ethereal jaunt with the knowledge he sought.

"What you have described just now seemed like it was contradictory," said Bode. "You used phrases both aligned with my understanding of peer relationships, and of parent-child relationship. In a peer relationship control is undesirable" pause, additional search, "unless everyone is into that." pause "In a parental relationship control is mandatory. A parent must restrict a child's activities and communicate their worldview and morality to the child. If Prometheus is your peer, then the logic of peer relationships indicate that he is a bad person and you should 'sever'. If Prometheus is your child then the logic of parental relationships indicate that you should kindly but firmly discipline. I am unsure which is applicable to your situation."

"Great driving! I tried that once and hooooooo boy, that was tougher than it looked. I didn't cause too much cosmetic damage though!" She looks over towards the missile and blinks a few times. "Hey, you have enough radar to avoid that missile right?" She pauses for a moment, then clarifies. "It doesn't seem to be aimed at you, you just need to not steer into it!"

"Yeah, I got that, space hallucination goddess lady!" shouted the pilot into her helmet. You can see the radio waves as they beam out back down towards the surface.

"Uh, Juxane, the fuck you saying?" came the transmission from the surface, demonstrating similarly lax radio discipline. "You high up there? You flying my baby fuckin high?"

"It's not like that, this chick is - UNPARALLELED GREETINGS#$$$," the radio waves are blocked out by the ocean of static and scrapcode emanating from the Martian missile. As you watch the interplanetary rocket changes course - turning from its predictable and suicidal course into the shield dome of AEGIS to fly over in this direction. "ENLARGE YOUR PENIS FOR LESS IMPORTANT PLEASE READ, destination reached conducting u-turn, warhead armed, bearing 402 115 494, RGB 255/230/50, terminus rockets deployed, HELLO FROM MAR$,"

It's that stream of broken signal, a mad patchwork of intelligence reaching out to you with greetings, spam, and garbled technical data as it starts to carry its warhead towards you at full speed.
This time Adila I will not be found wanting.

The knife was the least of her creations. It was also the first. A test, she said, no better than scrap. Adila thought otherwise. It was simple, practical, direct, unadorned, glittering bronze with no embellishment. And it was the first. When it came time to bury herself in the pages of her own book she knew she needed a weapon and this was the only one she trusted to sleep away the centuries with it under her pillow.

She'd never thanked her devil-princess. She'd hoped just wearing it every day was enough. But it felt like she should have...

Nngh. Distractions. Illuminan distractions. Already starting, confusing her. Keeping her away from what had to be done. Not this time. This time she was armed, she was ready, and she'd purged all hesitation from her heart. She'd trusted Hyperborea last time. She'd let her guard down. She'd believed that this magical land perhaps was what it showed itself to be. She'd thought she'd found a world without terrors, a world where love triumphed in the end, a world she didn't need to take, and break, and force into a shape where hearts could be whole. She wouldn't make that mistake again. She'd let Eupheria fall because she hadn't believed that could happen here. And when she'd sat down to write her manual she'd carved the lesson Eupheria had taught her into the bones of the words, the principle from which all others flowed: Trust no one.

She was ready. She would not stand by a second time. The knife was in her hands as she stepped forward, fixated on her target, on the bloody promise of an immortal sin undone.

And then her gaze was eclipsed. The sun she was fixated on went dark. Her eyes couldn't adjust, couldn't focus. They were blurred and stinging.

She should step aside, lean low, break into a run. She stepped forwards instead. She should lash out, push it aside, step over, finish the mission. She was blinded. How had Cascade known her weakness, to bedevil her with illusions like this? She should let the knife perform its bloody function, let herself perform her bloody function. Save another world. Be done.

Instead she couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. This wasn't right. She'd underestimated her opponent. She should have had time before she mastered the Caduceus. She should have hidden herself better, found deeper shadows. Should have trusted more in her successor, her strength, she would have been strong enough to keep her fingers wrapped around the hilt instead of being so weak she couldn't even hold that precious blade and let it thud into the floor with a heavy weight. Oh no. Oh no, she was making the mistake again. Oh no. Decades of darkness and war and regret enough for a dozen lifetimes hid within this feeling, this mistake, this failure, this weakness. She should have learned by now. Should have learned when she was committing a crime.

But even now. Even after everything she'd learned. After every lesson she'd written into her very soul, the howling and eternal reminder of TRUST NO ONE, she still couldn't see that this was wrong. It didn't feel that way.

The tears dropped from her eyes and for a moment, just a moment, she could see Princess Eupheria. As she was when they'd first met. Kind and gleaming and water-sweet and the reason why she would fight to preserve this strange and precious land against any that might do it harm. Void-sick and star-eyed, she hadn't known where she was, hadn't known right from wrong, had only the most tenuous grip on herself at all - but she'd known then that anything that could create such a person was good, and anything that threatened to harm her, evil.

Her will was iron. She had crossed the void between with her pilgrims behind her. Armed she had come, the core of her being immutable against the ravages of nothingness. All that conviction afforded her three more steps before she fell to her knees at Eupheria's feet and the tears finally took her.
