"Townies"

This is just a fun little role play based upon the Android game "Townsmen".

If you are familiar with the game, you will recognize the screen shots I post here and the role play posts that will include references to the game's concepts. If you aren't familiar with the game but you are interested in learning more about it or about this role play, feel free to PM me.

The story direction of this role play is very casual. There is no major quest here: we are just Townies living our lives as we create our town.

I could write more about the role play here and now, but I won't. I just want to get it started and have fun.

Testing, testing...

I'm just playing around with the map links to see if they are going to work here. Now, before you proceed, let me tell you what I just learned when I submitted my post and tested the links: yes, they do work, but they do not open in a second tab. Instead, they open in tab in which you are currently reading this text. That means that if you click on the link, view the map, and then close that tab, you close RPG. Use caution. (I am using a laptop with Windows 8.1. If someone knows a way to make new tabs open from RPG, I would love a pm explaining it. Also, is there no review link? Do I have to submit my post, look for errors, then edit and submit again? This isn't a complaint: I know Mahz is working as fast as he can to get this back to normal. I'm just looking for information.)

This is as close as you can get with a satellite view of where our adventure begins.

This is the next zoom setting, which is called 45 degree angle. I don't know whether it is an angle shot from a satellite or from an airplane and I don't really care. It offers a great 3D perspective, although it can sometimes hide details you want to see, such as objects or streets behind tall buildings. (Or course, you can turn 45 degree off. I've just never bothered to do so.)

And last but not least, this is where our adventure begins, with my primary character -- whose job it is to offer your characters options, not to lead the adventure -- learning that the world he once knew no longer exists and the world that does exist he knows nothing about.

THE STORY

An unexplained magical event is causing Manhattan's Central Park (and presumably the rest of the world) to undergo a transition.

Nothing is as it should be: dogs have become ferocious wolves, bicycles have become horses, pigeons have become savage eagles, and such forth. (Remember how in Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" Lumiere was turned into a candle stick and Cogsworth was turned into a clock? Similar thing, but without the laughter.)

YOUR CHARACTER

You begin as an average Joe (or Jo?), a normal type person with normal type abilities: Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Charisma.

With these abilities, you try to survive the madness surrounding you, learning what the dangers are and how to either fight or avoid them; and learning where to find valuable resources that will help in this survival.

Ultimately -- assuming you survive -- you will do more than survive: you will thrive! Find a treasure, establish a "castle", settle a "kingdom", and push the frontier of your territory out of Central Park and into the wilds of Manhattan.

(PLEASE NOTE: This concept is based upon the hope that GSV will work here. I notice that we aren't using BBCode and a great many things don't work like normal. Keep your fingers crossed.)

Many D&D DMs create a map to use in their players' campaigns, typically a two dimensional map of the countryside or of an actual dungeon, depending upon where the adventure takes them. The only fault with such maps is that they aren't very interactive.

We will be using the most interactive map I can come up with: Google Map's "Google Street View", or GSV as I will be calling it.

GSV offers the writers the ability to trek into their world and look about, to discover dangers and treasures with the click of a mouse or the swipe of a finger tip.

And yes, I am aware that some of you probably role play on devices that either can't use GSV or can't use it easily. If you can't use GSV but you want to give this role play a try, we can still create you a character and give it our best try. But I can guarantee you that if you can/t use GSV, you will miss out.

CREATING THE ROLE PLAY

I am only now putting all of this together, so it isn't ready for characters yet, let alone actual role play. But if you would like, you can subscribe to this thread (and the other associated threads) and, when the time comes, you will see the announcement that we are ready to get started.

For now, I would simply like to know if there is any interest in this type of a role play.
