Habits/Tropes You Utilize

I'm into the Rule of Three, and that doesn't really bother me. Three is a nice, comfortable number that I am perfectly OK adapting. Because the RP I am most involved with is 20th century Alt History but I am personally more interested in earlier history, I definitely do a lot of Born in the Wrong Century stuff. I have Generals who yearn for older ideas about honor, a mad neurologist who dresses and speaks like a Victorian gentleman, and plenty of characters who make historical comparisons or references that are somewhat out of place. And, of course, the main character if I have one is absolutely The Wise Prince. Like, to a tee.

I think the Nickelback problem is even bigger than that. You had this period in the early 2000's where pop music was basically the most watered down corporate rock sound you could imagine. By now that has all faded and been replaced with silly hip hop songs about butts, but back then fake-as-fuck rock was the thing, and everyone slowly started to hate it. Of course, most people liked at least one or two fake-as-fuck rock bands, or at least two fake-as-fuck rock songs. So Nickelback, which is artistically the rock equivalent of elevator music, became the symbol of that era of annoying song that everyone has agreed to hate so that nobody hates on each others exceptions.

The ally thing is tentative. We got really heavy into the middle east during the cold war because of the Russians, and so long as the cold-war generation of policy makers continue to govern affairs (and so long as Putin being Putin and China acting like a colonial power makes military action relevant) then we'll have to worry about the middle east.

But the day we cease needing petroleum for anything important is the day America starts turning its back on Israel. In another one hundred years, it is very possible that we'll look at the entire region in the same way we look at Africa today. Sort of a "Gee, their lives must suck, now what is the Mars Colony doing right now?"
