No, the totem doesn't just change form. If Toto sees an object that he likes the look of, it becomes his new totem and the connection to the last one is severed. It's a process that takes a few hours and he's weak and nearly powerless while he's transitioning, but the totem itself isn't simply changing appearance. It's something new all together.
I honestly love this idea. I've read every iteration of this RP and this seems to be one of the few original ideas that hasn't been overpowered.

@KatherinWinter
Now I might be wrong in my interpretation of this, but the connection of the mask to the beast seems like a watered down version of my character's totem, so to speak. The Djinn aren't physical beings, they're spiritual creatures that use a totem to focus their energies into a corporeal form. They can change what item is the totem at will, but if you destroy the item that is acting as the totem, their energies very painfully disperse. That's when the ritual becomes necessary to bring a Djinn back.

With the beast however, if the current mask is destroyed, it retreats back in Arachne until another mask matching its idea of a face is found.

Edit: This isn't me trying to undermine the GM's authority or anything, I was just impressed by the concept and had to give praise where I think it's due
Toto had woken from his slumber towards the end of the fight and oozed out of Rebekah's backpack. He took on the appearance of a small bird and perched on Rebekah's shoulder to watch the battle's conclusion. He whispers into her ear with a hint of excitement, "You should volunteer mistress. I would love to see of what you are capable."
@DFTBA
((He's still in the form of smoke, hovering between her feet as she walks.))

With a long, slow chuckle, Toto responds, "While I appreciate the sentiment madam, when you are born capable of living thousands of years, it is quite impossible to create meaningful relationships with creatures who will die in what seems to be the blink of an eye. If myself or a fellow Djinn were to attempt becoming friends with every master we ever serve, our existence would be one of constant heartbreak. It is wiser to maintain some level of emotional distance. If you don't mind, I'd prefer to continue speaking as I have been, Miss Rebekah. As to the totem, the backpack will do for now. While you make your way to your first class, I will retire to my totem and rest. If you have any need for me, I am but a word away."

With that, the smoke slowly crawls up Rebekah's legs and makes its way to her back pack. After searching for a few moments, Toto finds a hole in the zipper and all at once, the smoke disappears into the bag, swirling into hiding.

Toto continues the conversation in Rebekah's mind, "I imagine the other students that passed my totem on the road may have noticed it, although I doubt they knew what it was. However, if there are any particularly strong users of the magical arts, it is possible that they could detect my presence in the object."

The One falls silent as he ponders the dilema of how much information to divulge. "Should I inform the child of what happens if my totem were to be destroyed? I doubt she would throw away the opportunity to have my assistance when needed, but she is still a girl. She may react unpredictably if she has a particularly bad day..."

Once again, Toto begins communicating telepathically with his mistress, "I've decided to let you in on a couple secrets madam. Consider it a gesture of goodwill and trust. I may change the object that acts as my totem at any time. However, if my current totem is destroyed, it will effectively end my life. The only way for me to return from such an event is a very complex, very obscure ritual that few mortals have knowledge of. So I beg of you, be cautious with my totem."
@DFTBA
As Rebekah walks down the hall, Toto remains gathered between her legs. While they travel together through the school, The One makes sure to take note of every student they pass, as well as the layout of the building."After all, when one has a mistress as frail as I, surrounded by beings that may rival even my power, an escape route could be needed at any moment to escort her to safety," Toto thinks to himself. In response to his mistress' question, he replies, "If mistress pleases, Toto will search the school and surrounding grounds for a suitable location."
<Snipped quote by Vulture585>

Eh? She's not coming back. Read the last line of my post again. Rebekah has just entered the hall where all the students will be gathering for the official start of term stuff.

@GMs If there is no such event coming, let me know and I'll edit that out.

That was an autocorrect issue. I meant to say, "reappears," as in, when she popped back into view
When Rebekah reappears, she is greeted by a yawn and a bored gaze from Toto. "Is that all madam? One can't help but wonder if the limits you listed are mental, rather than physical. I suppose the potential for improvement IS the purpose of this school, isn't it? In the meantime, it's fortunate that you stumbled upon my totem." Toto follows his latest owner into the hallway while continuing speaking telepathically, "Which reminds me, mistress. There is no need for you to carry my totem with you. I would advise you to hide it in a safe spot, rather than keeping it on your person. I will be able to accompany you regardless of where my totem is located."
@hagroden

Considering the fact that he's composed of nanobots, more or less, could a sufficiently skilled hacker hypothetically highjack them and control his body until he fights them off? Or could the hacker possibly alter the memories stored in the nanobots? Are they metallic in nature? Could someone with control over the electromagnetic spectrum damage him by exploiting that?
In my humble opinion, with the changes, he isn't really any more overpowered than some of the other really durable characters the RP has had in it's past, like the son of the hulk, I think some kids of superman, Thor's kid, or the ones with high regeneration, like the son of antivenom or wolverine. Again, just an honest opinion
