Also note that there WOULD be significant American military elsewhere in the world. The US has over 20 aircraft carriers, half of those supercarriers (The ones with the slant deck) across the world. Likely, they would've pulled out to safer positions across the globe, but the US Navy is the largest in the world, by a longshot. Spots along the coast would still be 'clear' of Communist control because of those aircraft carriers. They'd likely be the center of resistance.
That and they'd keep harassing supply lines between 'Murica and the Soviets, so it's likely that there would be disruptions here and there among the US that would give our resistance opportunities to act, and cut off supplies even farther. Although it is certainly a dire situation, since we have quite the nuclear arsenal.
I'ma go with the writer for this.
