Hm. Well, it was already said in the beginning that they are going to fight a big evil, so fighting a monster would be the most logical first one.

This is true. I suppose it'll be the matter of who wants to kind of make a time skip of sorts? That, or we can simply have an event where a group of bandits or monsters invade the town we're currently in.

Maybe something like the group was sent to destroy a monster (something big like a dragon), but when they destroy the dragon they don't find is treasure trove but a clue to it's location, the clues lead them to a kingdom where a princess is in need of cure for a mysterious curse so they agree to gather the items if they find them along the way to the treasure, when the find the dragon's trove there is a book or something hinting at the location of the fountain of youth so a new adventure begins.

YES!!!!!! I WILL NAME IT SOMETHING AWESOME AND IT'S GONNA BE SO BADASS AND AKSDJFLAJDLFKAJDF I'M SO EXCITED FOR MY DRAGON BABY NOW :D...I wish dragons were real. Now this makes me sad. ): Why can't cute cuddly dragons be alive to fly around and drink milk?

Edit:

What type of dragon will it be? Western or Eastern? I would suggest Western since those are more on the evil side than Eastern dragons; Eastern dragons are usually considered good luck.
