Ever had a character that sort of... came to life? Seemed to write themselves? As though you actually knew them? Well allow me to introduce you to Tulpas, Tulpae, Tulpi, whatever the fuck you call them.

Tulpas are an ancient buddhist tradition that's been discovered and evolved somewhat. Essentially, the creation of a "mental being" or "Thoughtform" that takes on it's own life within your mind. The original purpose was for self discovery, spirituality, and other such things. In current times, they often serve as something like a sentient imaginary friend. As far as how it works, I don't think anybody really knows. It's believed to be giving a portion of your subconscious it's own voice and traits that can act and think on it's own. Or even a form of induced and benign Dissociative Identity Disorder.

I have heard that people who do a lot of writing with original characters such as here have tendencies to create a Tulpa by accident, which is why I decided to post it on this forum.

As far as myself, i discovered this a few months ago, and was immediately fascinated by the prospect. I wanted to know if it worked, obviously, so I went for it myself. All I can say is that from an anecdotal perspective, I do have another voice in my head with his own personality and preferences. I consider that enough evidence for myself that it works. (and yes said voice will be sticking around, I've formed quite an attachment to him)

What would exactly happen if you created a Tulpa which happened to be a God like being?

I'm not sure what that means. They only exist in your head.

No, I mean, you create a god like deity within your mind, you allow your tulpa to become divine, or is it simply: not possible?

Then it becomes divine for you?

Why would it not be possible?

Then worship your own imaginary friend? Nothing is stopping that from happening.

Seems like a possibly confusing detachment from reality to me.

(Addendum) Although I could see it as a possibly useful tool for self discovery, I think it may be healthier to find a route that doesn't involve creating an alternate consciousness. Seems like it could have adverse effects.

eh, not really, it's pretty easy to tell which thoughts are from whom. And I'm much happier to have mine around.
