Could women be surgeons? Or, could a woman have (dubious) medical training, and then join a pirate ship?

No harm in that. Actually, some of the people recruited could already have professions. They just take those skills out to sea and apply them where they can. Like a Captain Blood situation.

Very interested in playing a gunner's mate. I'd love to know what the tech level on the gunnery is. As a New England native, also very familiar with the history of shipbuilding from my native region, since the sailing ships built in Boston (and Baltimore, where I live now) were some of the best on the seas in their time.

Granted, most of the piracy happened further south, but a lot of the privateering, opium and tea trading and slave/rum trading happened right out of New England and the Mid Atlantic regions of the US.

Anyway, oh yes.
