The first nightmare

On the night of the fourteenth of november, it came to be that six human beings, with no knowledge of one another, went to sleep. Expecting the calming refuge of their own, valued and undisturbed, lucidly designed dreams. But these six, without exception, expected wrongly. Neither of them anticipated the events that would begin to unravel, beginning with this first nightmare of many to come.

They all regained their senses within the nightmare at roughly the same time. All of them were immediately lucid, so it would become painfully obvious to them that whatever was happening, went not according to plan.

The general area that presented itself to most of them was quite clearly an old, abandoned industrial area turned nightmare: several modern area buildings were spread out evenly, most in a decidedly forsaken state, some outright turned to ruins and rubble. A canal of sorts, easily seventy feet wide, divided the perimeter unevenly, cutting the dreamers off of the bigger part of the complex. Their side of the water only held about one fifth of the complex, including what was clearly a generator building with an attached substation for power distribution in the southwest corner. To its east, next to the river and what seemed to be non-functional floodgates was a smaller building, presumably once responsible for controlling the latter. Just north of that, a cell tower of about 80, maybe 100 feet height stood out. following the canal further north from there, one could see an old, barely stable looking transporter bridge and a severely rusted crane. To the west from this peculiar landmark was a staging area of sorts. A few derelict trucks and broken forklifts next to big, crumbling gates on both buildings implied that the latter were probably meant to be warehouses or storages for something transport-related. Further north from here, two large buildings of no obvious function slowly and silently decayed away. The entire area was surrounded completely by a chain-linked fence with barbed wire perched like the figurative cherry on top, but everything beyond the fence was mysteriously 'empty' anyway, taking away all incentive to explore beyond. 'Empty' describing a whole landscape full of dust and dried gras. Even the road leading to the west staging area mysteriously faded into nothing right outside the complex.

From this side of the canal, one could see several other, even larger buildings on the far side. But nothing was quite as oppressive and eye-catching as the overwhelming, outright gigantic building towering ominously above all else like a dark gray monolith. There was no telling what this building was meant to be, but it was obviously the metaphorical heart of the complex. That is, assuming that the architecture of this place indeed followed logical principles.

Dewey, the bite-sized sorcerer, found himself in some sort of basement. The dim light of an ongoing nightfall shone in through light wells here and there, allowing him to identify this part of the building as some sort of archive - dusty folders were stacked on top of boxes full of more dossiers on top of shelves holding even more folders. Searching them would reveal shiploads of redacted and blacked-out transport manifests and production reports. Stairs would eventually lead him up into the ground floor of an office building of sorts. Luckily, little Dew was blessed with his trademark sorcerer robe, and whatever else magical equipment he could possibly ask for, hopefully giving him the bravery needed to push onwards and explore this place.

But he was not alone in this part of the complex. Robin manifested dangerously high up on the rickety balconies of the second floor. While this outlook gave him a pretty wide vista of this side of the canal, the view through the smudgy windows was more interesting. Not only did it reveal cubicles and desks of an office area, it also represented his only safe way off these balconies, as there were no ladders or other non-lethal paths to be seen. While he would find a lot of data up here as well, these files too would be mostly useless import/export reports with redacted key data. Schmelzers slightly unsettling appendages were both in place and obeying his orders as usual, so at least he wouldn't choke himself or unwillingly jump off his perch yet.

Anya didn't draw the lucky straw. She essentially came to her senses being stuck between two severely reeking dumpsters filled with unspeakable and thankfully unidentifiable trash. Someone of her dream-like bodily strength would have no problems pushing one of the dumpsters away. Incidentally, the back alley she found herself in was directly behind the office/archive building Robin probably noisily jumped through a window of, by now. If not, she might even find herself in a position to laugh at his awkward situation.

A bit further south (read: quite a bit further south), Finn would wonder why he was sitting in a car that was practically half-buried in a rubble-avalance that presumably once belonged to the adjacent buildings roof. In fact, it seemed as if the car crashed into the debris that now blocked the northern path from here completely, but he would find no wounds implying an actual accident on his body. His lucky charm, the psychic teddy bear evidently survived the incident as well, sitting on the passenger seat and staring at him expectingly. Further down south from here, he would find more cars, as if this side of the building was once used as a parking lot. Of course, none of these were still functional.

Inside the generator building, gambler girl Saniya came to life. The inside of a mostly decrepit generator station certainly wasn't the most welcoming of sights, but unless she had some sort of generator-phobia, she would have little problem finding that the doors of the windowless - and thus pitch black - building were unlocked. She would still be able to lower the probability of hitting her toes on the way out of this darkness, so these bones were safe for the time being.

Shin the raver had probably the most peculiar starting position. He was half-sitting, half in nap position right at the edge of the canal. He was holding on to the cell tower with one hand to prevent himself from taking an unintentional bath. Yet, one of his feet was casually dangling over the edge, with the water being close enough to get his toes wet. While wearing shoes. Truly a cruel fate, as even his fully functional glow-thread could not prevent that awkward wet-toes-feeling.

Lastly, a shadowy figure observed their baby steps from the other side of the canal. It was barely visible if one was to pay close enough attention to the shadows next to the southern-most building just across the water.

Shin jerked suddenly, it felt as if he was just thrown into this dream nightmare. Feeling the water touch his shoe, soaking through the canvas and wetting his toes uncomfortably when he jumped, he pulled himself up onto the ledge and stood next to what seemed to be an old cell tower looming above him. Across the canal, which was far too long to even consider crossing, there were a number of dark buildings. None of them seemed completely in tact and there was no sign of anyone else here with him. A tall dark building caught his eye in the distance. He couldn't make out any specific details, besides how large it was especially in comparison to all the others.

He brushed himself off and walked south, exploring the area. There was unidentifiable rubble along the ground and a coat of dust found itself blowing in the air. The sky was cloudy, who knows what time it was but it certainly wasn't day. Looking down the canal, near the fence that separated the dilapidated town from literally nothing in particular, there was flood gates parted open in an unnatural way. The look of mold growing up the side was unsettling, but if you think about mold as a life form atleast Shin wasn't entirely alone.

Shin made his way to the building that he presumed controlled the broken flood gates, but couldn't find any obvious entrance in plain sight atleast. He decided trying to get in was useless anyway, and started walking back north.

Anya more or less woke up, well not really woke up moreso re-gained the ability of cognitive thought, jammed between two dumpsters of trash. Her first thought was oh holy shit this stinks what, her second thought was shoving one of the dumpsters away so as to escape her make-shift prison.

Lucky for her she wasn't over-weight or she'd be hard pressed to manevour her arms around in front of her. She easily pushed the dumpster in front of her out of the way and stood up. Looking around she was in some kind of alleyway behind some kind of old office building. "Well..this definetely isn't something I'd ever think of." She spoke to herself, looking down each end of the alley, and eventually up above her.

Someone she'd never seen before in any of her dreams, much less real life, was standing on an old rickety balcony a floor above her. Slamming one of the lids of the dumpsters closed Anya climbed on top to get a better look at the person.

He was quite clearly older than she was, and definetely no one she'd ever seen before. She could've sworn she saw faint squiggly movement under the mans left shirt sleeve but shrugged it off, thinking it was simply this weird and creepy place playing tricks on her.

"Hey! Who are you!" She called out, waving up at him. "And where are we? I don't recall thinking this place up before." Maybe the man was one of the background characters she'd thought up before to talk to her and she accidentally thought of this place somehow.

Dewey awoke to shouting, clearly not the best way to wake up. " Hey! Shut the f#&k up back there, peasant! " Of course he had to call them peasants-- he was a trained sorcerer! And besides, maybe they were just random people he thought up of. A few seconds after, he ever so slowly stands up, still regaining his supposedly existent senses

Since, of course, his non-existent senses were still not there, he, like a drunk man in an alleyway, walks up the stairs. Greeted by a boring floor of what seems to be an office, he quickly walked stumbled towards the exit. By now, he had regained his senses, and had been greeted by an awfully empty scenery.

Hopefully nothing would attack ( and maybe incinerate, electrocute or freeze ) him.

Truth be told, Saniya was afraid of many things. The dark had never been one of them, not even when she was a child. The darkness that came in dreams was even less intimidating, because even in lucid dreams she always had a vague sense of where everything was. It was the same as searching a set of drawers while dreaming; Saniya was never truly surprised by what she found because her own subconscious was the one that created it. It was precisely for this reason that when Saniya opened her eyes to the pitch black room that she fought the urge to panic in the dark for the first time - not because the dark was frightening, but because she was asleep and could not sense what was around her.

Saniya took a step forward and promptly stubbed her toe on something very hard and metallic. Swearing angrily, she backed up instead to find herself with her back pressed flat against the wall. It took Saniya a moment to recognize this as the blessing that it was, then she scuttled quickly along, hugging the wall as she traced her hands over it, searching for any method of escape. The doorknob rattled slightly as she tapped it with the side of her hand. Her breath caught in her throat, and she turned to face what must be the door in front of her.'Please,' she thought, and it occurred to her how stupid this was to think, given that this was a dream. Something told her that if this door was locked, she was in trouble. Thankfully, the door swung open, and a gust of fresh air welcomed Saniya into the complex.

The very first thing that the young woman did was examine herself. She inspected her hands carefully, rubbed one carefully over her facial features, and then patted her chest. "One of those, huh?" she remarked to herself under her breath, as was her habit in these dreams. It was only then that she took a look at her surroundings, only to find them utterly unfamiliar. "That's... new," the young woman observed, a slight frown creasing her expression as she wondered why she would have dreamed this. A slight movement out of the corner of her eye caught her attention. She glanced over to see a.. was that a man or a boy? She would have thought a man, save for his diminutive height. He was wandering, seemingly aimless, through the dilapidated buildings. Saniya's frown deepened. He was new, too.

The young woman (though not at all as young as she looked) did not call to him, but she made no move to hide herself, either. Instead she waited, and watched.

Finn... Fiiiiiin. Finn opened his eyes slightly as a honeyed female voice cooed. Is it time for school already? It felt far too early and far too Saturday for these thoughts. Something was amiss here, dream or not.

Fiiin... Time to get up Finn. Pausing his thinking process as the voice sounded again, it crossed Finn's mind that this was not his sweet mother's voice at all. Finn thought for a moment before it hit him. His eyes shot open as he frantically looked around the car.

"Naula where are you?!" Finn exclaimed before finally seeing his stuffed companion sitting in the passenger seat next to him. "Thank goodness you're safe." After a short sigh of relief, Finn began to fully asses the situation at hand. After a quick glance around and some thinking some may consider to be on par with rocket science, he concluded he was, in fact, in a half buried car. Wasting no time on his brilliant analyses he grabbed Naula and tumbled over the front seats of the hunk of junk he occupied to test his luck with the back doors.

To his luck, the back seat's door was unlocked and unbroken, just begging to be opened. He did just that, stepping out afterward to get a better look at his new surroundings. The drab landscape (rather ally) he was greeted to came as a shock to him, Finn wasn't the best at lucid dreaming, but his gut told him something in the whole process had gone awry. "No sense in standing around here." he spoke to his companion. After gaining the confirmation he requested they set forth south down the ally then headed east at first chance. Wherever they were, objective one was to see the new land they inhabited.

When he appeared out of thin air, Robins mind was as foggy as London town on a nice autumn morning. He shook his head and held on to the next best thing his hand could grap - the railing that spanned the balcony. It screeched as soon as he put his weight on it and flakes of rust and grime fluttered down. He blinked two, three times, but the fog wouldn't leave his field of view. Then he realised that it was the very air that was preventing him from seeing more than some old, forsaken buildings, a chainlink fence and the beginning of a large field.

With a little bit of surprise he gave the buildings a closer look. That wasn't his usual dream. If he wants to be alone, then it's normally on a nice and warm island, not in the middle of a russian zombie town! Behind him was some kind of office, but the door was shut and he was stuck on the balcony. One way in would be smashing the glass, he thought for himself while feeling up his left arm. But still, it was his dream and he could just float down, right ?

His thoughts where interrupted when he heard a squeaky, girlish voice. Robin looked down and, oh wonder, there was a little girl.
"At least it's not as forsaken as I thought." He said for her to hear. "I'm Robin. It's strange to say that here... you should know that, seeing that you're in my dream. But that said...
... if it would be a normal dream, you would be older, and not here." Flashing a wide grin he wrecked his mind who the girl could be, but he drew a blank. He has never seen her, nor did he recognize her voice. "We are in some kind of city. And who are you ?"

Robin was just about to ask her another question, when he heard another voice, but very quiet and muffled by several walls of concrete. He looked down to the girl and just to reassure himself he asked her: "Hey, did you hear that too ?"

Anya blinked. His dream? What. "Your dream? What do you mean your dream? This is my dream...I think..?" She told him, now thoroughly confused. "Names'Anya, can't say I've ever seen you in my dreams either bud."

Something was definetely odd here, neither of them had obviously ever seen each other before, and Robin thought this was his dream when Anya thought it was hers. "This is..odd. Um. If I didn't dream you up, how are you here? And if this is your dream, how am I here?" She told him.

Maybe somehow they were sharing a freaky dream sequence like in a movie or something. Then she heard a second voice she never re-called hearing before. "Mhm. This just keeps getting weirder." She replied. "If this IS your dream, could I reccommend thinking of somewhere...cleaner..next time?"

After walking for quite a bit along the building, he stumbled upon two people. He listened for quite a bit, maybe this could give him information of what was happening in this dream.

He then spoke out: " Hey, you guys have any idea what's happening? " he said as he noticed what they were wearing; modern clothing. This rose his suspicion a bit.

Looking back towards the fence, Shin spotted someone else. Someone besides himself in his own dream, even the idea of such a thing was unheard of. He started walking south, towards the figure of a person. He didn't call out to them, he didn't run, and he kept calm. All he could think about was why this person was here with him in this dark place. Upon closer inspection, it was a girl who was not moving, instead she had been watching him all this time. Although she wasn't very tall, he had to look up at her.

The young man's direction shifted, and the sense of aimlessness vanished as he walked toward her. "Aaaand you saw me," Saniya muttered under her breath, crossing her arms. "Awesome." She still did not move toward him or away, debating what she wanted to do and wondering why her subconscious had decided to file "short guy with blue bracelet" in with "decrepit industrial buildings". On the one hand, something about this dream deeply unsettled her, and some company might do her good. But ultimately, no version of Saniya had ever been what you might call a "people-person". Making up her mind, Saniya waved her hand dismissively at him to make the stranger disappear.

He did not. Saniya cursed under her breath. She had never been very good at controlling her dreams, even when she was fully aware of them. The best that she could usually do was to sway the odds in favor of what she wanted, rather than make something happen outright. Her therapist said it was something about perceived helplessness and a low self-esteem becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. While awake, Saniya felt this was a reasonable explanation. Here, she thought it was a load of crap. Well, fine, if she could not make him go away...

"What are you supposed to be, then?" she called as soon as the boy was within earshot. In the relative silence of this place, Saniya's clear and distinctly female voice seemed nearly deafening. "A projection of my secret desire to be a dwarf?" She recognized that this was not particularly fair. He was only a few inches shorter than she was. Then again, no one had ever accused Saniya of being fair.

"What am I supposed to be?" Shin scoffed, "What are you doing here. I don't believe we have met, nor did I ever plan to meet you. And I don't remember ever being a dwarf, though your definitely not one to talk." He knew this wasn't any regular dream, but was this girl, well, pretty much a girl, a figment of his imagination? Was all of this merely a dream or something else? The feeling of not being able to control any of this was unsettling and disliked.
"Whoever you are, we can talk on the way. I was headed that direction." He gestured north, "I want to find a way out of here." He started walking away, assuming she would follow him.

"And what makes you think there is a way out?" Saniya pointed out. "It's a dream. Dream-logic applies. Oh, wait, you wouldn't know that, would you?" She did follow him, though, not because she was particularly convinced that north was a way out, but more because she was concerned that something large was going to sneak up on them and she might be given more time to run if it mauled him first. Monsters were not an uncommon occurrence in her dreams.

"Anyway," she added, "dreams would have to be awfully literal to only contain the people that we know. But in this case, it doesn't matter if you know me, but that I know you, as you are my dream. Since I don't, I think we can safely skip over the rest of the 'who are you' bit and move on to getting whatever this is over with." She waved an impatient hand at their surroundings.

Just a few moments after hearing the second voice someone else came around a corner. Robin took a few steps to the side to get a look at the person, only to see a round, little boy to his surprise. Another persona he normally wouldn't imagine in his dreams. Something was definitely not right in here.
"Well, I agree with you there. It's not getting easier to understand whats happening. The only thing I know for sure is, that I am dreaming right now. And I don't know neither you, little gi- Anya, nor you, redhead." He stated as a matter of fact and ignored her last comment. It wasn't even his choice to end up in this city! "I can hardly believe it... but could it be that you're also dreaming right now? Even then, it shouldn't be possible that we can see and interact with each other, right ?"

Robin took one last look into the office behind him and made two short steps backwards. "Well, it's still a dream and I don't want to be stuck up here. Watch out, I'm floating down, then we can explore the area." He warned them, counted to three and imagined himself light as a feather, slowly floating down the two stories to the ground. After concentrating he jumped over the railing and something in his subconsciousness hoped, that he still had his basic abilities to shape the dreamscape.

And so Robin lept from the balcony, light as a feather. His unlikely flight happened in slow motion right in front of the amazed eyes of Anya and Dewey. Dramatic tension rose until the breaking point... the peak of his jump. Suddenly, Robin dropped the full two stories like a stone.

On his way down, he would probably realise that he overestimated the amount of control that was given to him within the limits of this place. But he didn't have much time to come to that conclusion, with the cold concrete coming closer at an alarming rate.

The only reason why Schmelzer didn't outright break both of his legs was the abnormal physiology of his 'phantom' limbs. He would be able to instinctively shift most of his weight onto the unnatural leg. Being the lucky duck that he was, that would merely sprain the ankle of his normal leg, rendering him unable to move any faster than slow walking speed - and even that only under significant pain. If the maneuver would then involve a roll in order to further break his fall, it would rip his shirt in a heroic manner, exposing the inhuman arm before ending in a slightly less heroic faceplant. But that last part was purely optional.

Being as unprepared for the sudden (and absolutely unforseen) change of events, Robin didn't do a roll to soften the impact he had on the ground. Something like that wasn't in his muscle memory, as his last mandatory judo session was over a decade ago. His legs gave way when they met the concrete slabs with a disturbing chrunching sound, he lost the feeling in his legs and dropped on his back.

"Uuuuuurgh." was the only sound that he could make after this glorious jump. It would take him some moments to collect himself, and for the pain to subside. But when he eventually saw his surrounding again, and not the hot-white stars of pain, he says "Verdammter Scheiß... argh, well... let us note that this place is not like my normal dreams. It seems that I can't control anything here."

Dewey, the sly little a-hole he is, couldn't help but comment. " Sounds like it hurt, heh, " was what he uttered. I guess this redhead needs a beating or two, but eh.

" Wait, your dream? I thought I was the one dreaming here; or maybe I'm unconsciously playing a trick on myself. Either way, who are you guys? " he said after Robin had said this wasn't one of his normal dreams.

Nevertheless, he attempted to help him up by way of brute strength, not magic.

The owner of the muffled voice they had heard earlier then made himself know, Anya couldn't help but laugh at his wizard outfit. Yeaaa, she definetely didn't think these people up herself. "Noope, not a clue Gandalf." She replied, giggling. She then turned her attention to Robin.

"Well uh, I'm pretty sure I'm dreaming too. But something like this shouldn't be possible." She told him. "I mean, I fell asleep, sooo I should be dreaming. It still doesn't really explain how this is possible though.."

When Robin told her to step back she backed up further against the wall. "Are you sure you don't..want..me..to..." She trailed off. "Annnd he jumped." Sighing she watched on, fully expecting him to break himself, and he did just that.

Hopping off the dumpster she stood beside him and sighed, "Or, you could do that." She told him, frowning. "You should've just let me catch you, ya know? I'm kinda really strong in my dream state, and it stuck. Cause, I had to move one of those dumpsters or I would've been stuck here.

She then addressed the boy in the wizard robes, smiling in amusement at his outfit as she did. "I think we're all dreaming, it's starting to make more and more sense that we are. I mean. We don't know each other at all, and frankly I'd never think up someone in a nerdy wizard outfit like yours." She told him, "Also, names' Anya. Annd the next time you call me a peasant, you'll be wearing one of these dumpsters behind me, 'kay?"

" Ah, great. Now I'm being criticized for my clothing preference; next you'll be commenting about my weight? " he muttered under his breath, actually quite intimidated by the whole 'wearing a dumpster' thing. " What if I said I could... uhm... burn you? " he attempted to also intimidate her, but it obviously failed, miserably, too.

Not that he'd actually want to off her, any companion would be a good companion.

" Oh, right. The name's Dewey, in case you'd want to remember that, " he said. " Or if you maybe want to possibly find me outside the dream and give me a beating, and... I dunno, " he added.

Robin accepted the hand Dewey offered him gladly. He pulled himself up and tried to put weight on his ankle. Pain immediately shot up his leg and made him gasp for air. "Yep, that's sprained." was his conclusion and he shifted his weight on his fine leg. Standing there like a duck on land on one leg, he tuned back into the conversation.

"Well, how could I know that you have increased strength in here ? You look like a little girl, so I assumed you are one." he retorted after she sighed at his jump. "Normally that works in these dreams. Oh well, then use your super strength to help me, would you be so kind? And what do we do now ?" The last question was directed at both of his... companions. Maybe the wannabee wizard could magic up a map or something.
