I just wrote a fairly extensive review of The Jungle Book and went to post it here, only to find that the connection had been lost. It was not to be, it seems, but I can and will vouch for the movie's validity - and not just because Shere Khan has easily become one of the greatest Disney villains ever, but because the whole thing is wonderfully crafted and exceptionally dark "wild fantasy" for a younger audience.

I would advise just seeing both, @Carantathraiel. It has such a strange and unsettling ambiance befitting of a jungle.

Come now, @Deamonbane, do you really think I would make such a specific, strange and particular sentiment on that? Let alone consider it on the side of "human stupidity"? I would almost be hurt, for a myriad of reasons.

I dunno. I almost lost it when I saw you say that Shere Khan has easily become one of the greatest Disney villains ever. I hoped you were joking, but I looked over your avatar, signature and other amenities and wondered if you were actually serious and a bit biased.

Overall, I considered the Jungle Book, both movies, to be fun but mediocre and average at best.

Shere Khan is indeed one of my most favored villains in this rendition, in that he is not to be trifled with, embodies what makes a raging tiger terrifying and is well portrayed as being evil with a reason. Not entirely worthy of sympathy, at least his motives are understandable and his actions executed appropriately. Prior we had only heard about how scary he was and his motivation was flimsy.

I am indeed biased toward big cats and I admit I likely felt more for Khan than most. Either way, yes, I do think him a vastly superior villain now - Frollo still being darker and more disturbed.

Frollo is one of the more human villains that Disney has. You don't see many Disney bad guys having such base driving passions as lust and fear of eternal fire. We still have Scar, Gaston, Hades and Ursula.

But yes, in the original cartoon, Khan is seen as not much more than a driving plot point, whereas in the movie he's a lot more terrifying and understandable. And with Idris Elba voicing him, he gets that little bit of extra touch.

I was never so fond of Scar, as in the latter half he became far less menacing. I admit though, Hades' character is particularly charismatic and the "evil lawyer". Gaston never struck me for much beyond a bait and switch - Beast as the anti-hero was more interesting. Ursula I am not too familiar with, but I have heard she is a well received villain.

Some of Khan's behaviors just struck me as so true to type. The fine balance between cunning, dignified beast and slavering killer.
