Shiranui elected to go first. "This gym battle will be a two-stage battle with no time limit," the official declared, "The first stage is a two-on-two double battle and the second stage is a three-on-three single battle. Begin!"
"Walrein, Seaking, go!" Juan sent out a Walrein and a Seaking and Shiranui scanned both Pokémon.
"Walrein, The Ice Break Pokémon. Walrein swims all over in frigid seawater while crushing icebergs with its grand, imposing tusks. Its thick layer of blubber makes enemy attacks bounce off harmlessly."
"Seaking, the Goldfish Pokémon and the evolved form of Goldeen. Seaking is very protective of its eggs. The male and female will take turns patrolling around their nest and eggs. The guarding of eggs by these Pokémon goes on for over a month."
"Gimansha, Hoshi, I choose you!" Shiranui sent his Mawile and Starmie out in response.
"Walrein, Blizzard; Seaking, Horn Drill at Starmie!"
"Gimansha, Super Fang at Walrein; Hoshi, use Reflect Type on Walrein!" Hoshi used its psychic abilities to change its type to match Walrein. The area surrounding its core changed to cyan. Seaking charged at Hoshi with its horn spinning like a drill, but Hoshi jumped into the pool to dodge the attack. Walrein fired a Blizzard that missed Hoshi and glanced off of Gimansha. Gimansha in retaliation clamped her jaws on Walrein's head and cut its HP in half.
"Seaking, use Megahorn on Starmie; Walrein, use Brine on Mawile!"
"Gimansha, Iron Head at Walrein; Hoshi, stir things up with Gyro Ball!" The Starmie sunk to the bottom of the pool and started spinning very fast, soon creating a vortex. Seaking tried to navigate the current, but it was caught. Above the surface, Walrein sprayed a blast of saline water at Gimansha and the Mawile felt the damage. Gimansha swung her jaws and clubbed Walrein on the head, the hit being critical.
"Seaking, Supersonic at Starmie; Walrein, use Brine on Mawile once more!"
"Hoshi, Thunderbolt at Seaking; Gimansha, Metal Burst!" The pool water soon became live with electricity and Seaking was electrocuted into a knockout. Gimansha conjured an orb of energy in her jaws as Walrein sprayed another blast of saline water at her. The Mawile's HP was just low enough for Brine to be extra potent and was almost down. Gimansha launched the orb at Walrein and Walrein felt half again the damage it inflicted on Gimansha—just enough to knock it out as well.
Both trainers recalled their Pokémon. "You may have defeated me in the double battle, but you still have three more of my Pokémon to beat. Go Luvdisc!"
"Manectric, I choose you!" Juan sent his Luvdisc out and Shiranui responded with his Manectric.
"Luvdisc, Sweet Kiss!"
"Manectric, Discharge! Mega Ring activate!" Shiranui activated his Mega Ring and Manectric soon became a Mega Manectric. Manectric electrocuted Luvdisc into a one-hit knockout.
"Luvdisc, return; go Whiscash!"
"Manectric, return; Kinoko, I choose you!" Juan switched to a Whiscash and Shiranui switched his Mega Manectric for his Breloom.
"Whiscash, Zen Headbutt!"
"Kinoko, Spore!" The Breloom enveloped Whiscash in a cloud of spores, but Whiscash dove into the pool. Whiscash's face started glowing with iridescent energy as it leaped out of the pool. Just before impact, Kinoko dodged the attack. Her Toxic Orb left her badly poisoned.
"Whiscash, Earthquake!"
"Kinoko, Fling!" Kinoko flung the Toxic Orb and managed to hit Whiscash with it. The damage wasn't much, but the orb activated, leaving Whiscash as badly poisoned as Kinoko. Whiscash slammed the side of the pool and shook Kinoko for some major damage. The Breloom's Poison Heal ability allowed Kinoko to use the poison to heal some damage while Whiscash got a bit of damage from being badly poisoned.
"Whiscash, try Zen Headbutt again!"
"Kinoko, Seed Bomb!" Kinoko jumped high into the air and pelted Whiscash with a barrage of seeds, causing heavy damage. Whiscash jumped out of the pool, its head glowing with iridescence, and struck Kinoko for a lot of damage. Kinoko recovered more health, but Whiscash succumbed to the poison.
"Whiscash, return; go Milotic!" Juan switched the downed Whiscash for his headliner Milotic and Shiranui didn't switch Kinoko out.
"Milotic, Ice Beam!"
"Kinoko, Leech Seed!" Milotic fired a lightning-like beam of ice and Kinoko was blasted into a knockout.
"Kinoko, return; Hoshi, I choose you!" Shiranui switched his Breloom for his Starmie.
"Milotic, Safeguard!"
"Hoshi, Minimize!" Hoshi shrunk in size, making the Starmie harder to hit while Milotic gained a sheen that protected it from status conditions.
"Milotic, Dragon Tail!"
"Hoshi, Thunderbolt!" The Starmie's core glowed yellow as it spun like a generator and unleashed a blast of electricity that electrocuted Milotic. Milotic managed to whack Starmie back into its Poké Ball. Gimansha popped out.
"Milotic, Recover!"
"Gimansha, Super Fang!" Milotic recovered most of the damage it received from the Thunderbolt while Gimansha made her way over and bit down with her jaws with enough force to cut Milotic's HP in half, making the Recover mostly moot.
"Milotic, Water Pulse!"
"Gimansha, Sucker Punch!" Gimansha bit down on Milotic again and the hit was critical. Milotic was knocked out from the hit.
"Congratulations, Shiranui!" said Juan, "For defeating me in battle, I award you the Rain Badge."
"Thanks Juan," replied Shiranui. He sat down in the grandstand to watch Liam's battle.
