@Sorrelmyst

I have some advice, if you'd care for it?

"Bipolar" Is short for bipolar disorder, of which symptoms are mood swings between manic and depressive episodes... Not multiple personalities. Mental health issues are a touchy subject for most, so I'd recommend not writing a mental disease if you can't do so accurately. I'm sure we don't want accidental sterotypes or miscategorisations.

Again, just friendly advice. :)

@Caits No problem :3 I meant to add a highlight, but I haven't used BBCode in so long....

@MiddleEarthRoze Ah, I apologize! x_x I suppose I meant scizophrenia, yes? However, I'll just put 'dual personalitied'. I've just always heard of bipolar describing dual-personalitied people.

EDIT: Fixed it above :3

Not sure where you got schizophrenia from, as you haven't mentioned anything like that in your CS. As for "Dual personalitied", it doesn't exist. What I assume you're referring to is Disassociative Identity Disorder, of which a person suffers from a disassociated state of mind and multiple personalities. As any web source will tell you, DID isn't as black-and-white as having two people struggling for power in one's head as your CS states. Typically, DID patients will create a secondary personality, or "Host" personality in the event of trauma. These personalities are typically innocent and unknown to the trauma they sustained, as the sole purpose of it's subconscious creation is to protect one's mind from trauma: It's an extreme form of denial. It's rare for DID to create aggressive or violent personalities, and more often than not any violence brought forth from the Disorder is internalised - they'll attack themselves, hate themselves, etc., rather than hurt others.

It should also be mentioned that sufferers from DID nearly always suffer from other forms of mental issues on top of it; Amnesia, Anxiety, Depression, Self-Hatred, suicidal thoughts, in some cases Agoraphobia... the list goes on.

Basically, what you need to keep in mind - if you are having you character suffer from DID - is that it's an illness. It is not good, and it does not bring with it good things; it should never be written as convenient, as a super-power, or for a plot-point. It's unfair to those who suffer, and doesn't help in stereotypes.

This interview with a sufferer of DID describes the disorder rather well, if you're interested in learning more.

I've just always heard of bipolar describing dual-personalitied people.

Like all mental illnesses, bipolar disorder differs from person to person. It's not having dual personalities, it's shifting between depressive episodes and manic episodes. The person doesn't change personalities between these shifts; bipolar disorder I, II, and cyclothymia are more like different types of roller-coasters. And each roller-coaster is tailored to the individual who's afflicted with the mental illness.

Manic episodes are times where the individual has too much energy to expend. Their outlook on life is different. They're prone to spending too much money, doing too many things, putting too much on their plate. They want to do anything and everything. I've read insomnia is often a symptom of a manic episode. Bipolar II, individuals experience hypomania which is a less acute form of mania. Depending, these episodes can last for a week. I'll stress, these manic episodes aren't just hyperactivity. It's euphoric, like being on a high and I honestly think it makes the drop from it all the more devastating.

Depressive episodes act as the name implies. They lack energy, sometimes they eat too much or they don't eat at all. Can feel hopeless and empty. It's what you think when you think of depression, essentially. They usually last longer than manic episodes.

It's not so much hot and cold, as it is, up and down, up and down, and a continuous cycle of this. Some individuals experience small ups and extreme downs. It's why it's also called manic-depressive disorder.

I'm not shooting you down, or anything. I just thought it might be wise to throw some knowledge out there. I see bipolar disorder/manic-depressive disorder misrepresented a lot as "This person's angry one second and super sad the next and the super angry, etc., etc.," and that's not really how it works. That's actually a lot more harmful than you'd think when considering people's perception of an individual who's bipolar, as well as individuals misdiagnosing themselves.

Also, Schizophrenia is something that's still so unknown to the medical world that I would definitely not attempt to portray it unless you yourself have it.

But, uh, don't take this as me being angry or anything else I think it might be a bit rude to yell at someone for this, or maybe I'm just way too polite for my own good. I simply saw an opportunity to spread some knowledge! I think being informed is a powerful tool, especially in writing. :) And it's definitely not my excuse to delve into research for longer than I should, heh. It's both an extreme enjoyment and something I need to do to quell my anxiety.

Sorry for any confusion....

@MiddleEarthRoze I think that's kind of similar to what I'm thinking, but, to be honest, I don't really know how to describe it. Mostly, Vail is the 'default' personality, who simply does what she is asked- her talent is simply killing. Vara is the 'original' personality, who knows what has happened, knows what's going on, but is not in control. It's kind of like Vail is a parasite, using the body taken from Vara as her own. (Don't know if that helps to explain it better, but it's all I really know how to say)

@Solo It's okay! I honestly don't want to misrepresent mental issues, seeing as I know how difficult they can be to live with. I myself have two minor ones- ADHD and chronic anxiety- and those affect my life enough as it is, and I have it really easy. Thanks for sharing information with me, though! I'm always interested in learning more things.

Yeah, from what you've described, it sounds more like possession from an outside being than a mental disorder. Maybe you should ask the GMs to see if you could do that - a possession of some kind? Not sure if ghosts or demons are in the Overwatch Universe, but it's worth asking. Plenty of other parasite-like things that could do that too.

@Sorrelmyst In all fairness, she doesn't have to even necessarily have a registered mental illness here. The entire idea of split personalities is an old trope, and tropes are meant to be used. Part of me says you shouldn't put a label on it, and just roll with the idea. Most real mental illnesses are very difficult to portray accurately, though I do think they can be used if you play them straight. That being said, this is a world with talking apes, cyborg ninjas, and sentient robot buddhists. Someone who zones out when it's time to kill isn't super out there, and if you avoid calling it a real mental illness no one is misrepresented. She could say it's totally the other "personality" as a means of avoiding personal guilt and shame, for example. It's still her, she just doesn't believe it. Just my two cents :T

@MiddleEarthRoze Yeah, I'll look into it.

@Tominas That's what I was thinking too, kind of. The main thing is that she'd be spaced out most of the time, as opposed to just when she was killing.

To be honest, I think the possession bit would be cool. Maybe a corrupt AI inside of her or something like that? I'll have to think about it a little more. Although I might just switch to a different hero concept I have.
