Most sent there, died in their training. He surprised everyone by surviving and adapting. Even for his size he is incredibly fast and strong.
From there he entered compulsory military service. His father did nothing to protect him. The fact that Duncan continues to survive is a constant annoyance to his father’s latest wife - and his older brothers. They see him as a threat as they fear their father is beginning to respect Duncan. But the truth is that Duncan’s persistent disregard for social class distinctions brings shame on the family name.
