Always Open --------- The sun hung low in the west, and from his balcony he watched it sink slowly towards the calm waves of the bay. Daylight had few hours left in the city of Mullen, his city, and its final struggles for life on both the water's surface and the shingle roofs of the city made a golden-red view he found fit for a king. A fitting thought, for a king he was. Bard Urien, to his people he called himself Bard II in tribute to one of his long dead forefathers. He needed that, and everything else he could muster, to legitimize his rule. The room he stood in was his only by the virtue of his brothers' deaths. The first had fallen ill years before and the second-born son serving as king had died in his sleep months ago, and despite being the next of kin it had taken him and his court until now to install himself as the new king. That was unfortunately the climate the old kings of Keilaudrin had built. Their nation was the rising star of the west coast, the largest kingdom in the region and a potent and growing military and trade power. Keilaudrin was one hundred and fifty years of shrewd diplomacy and calculated conquest in the making, and the cost of that haste was the myriad of arrangements, promises, and pacts binding the crown and its vassals together. He had to take every step the perfect way, to the perfect place, and not just for his lords but for his people. They had seen the best and worst of kings, maybe more of the latter, and he had no doubt that every eye in the land was turned to him and his regime in scrutiny. One misstep, one revolt, and innocent blood would be on his hands. He had been crowned a few weeks prior, but he found himself setting on his balcony to reflect on the eve of the celebration of his coronation. The whole city was up in colors and festivity to celebrate the return of order, but it would begin in earnest tomorrow morning. His lords would expect an heir to be named. The Urien family was short of them, and Bard himself was still unmarried. As the last Urien, he was the greatest target. The crown was weak, and at any moment the royal family could be snuffed out and lost on the pages of history. Bard was not an idealist, and he knew that there were more lords with ambition than without in his court. There were any number of ways to put someone else on the top, and any number of people willing to try it. Not only his own vassals but any nation that happened to have an interest in one of the most influential nations on the continent would be looking for their way in. It almost seemed that in the grand scheme of things, the king himself was quickly becoming unimportant. Keilaudrin was at the brink of falling apart, and any man or number of men with enough desire could pull the web of intrigues holding it together apart. They would be entering themselves in a dangerous game, however. Keilaudrin was no stranger to war, violence was something any man out for the throne came prepared for. The grim specter of violence used in usurpation loomed close by in the north, over the neighboring once-country of Lachne, now an ashen waste populated only by bandits and the desperate. The night hadn't yet come, and the party to usher in the era of a new king stayed beyond even that. But in the streets of Mullen, people came to involve themselves in a struggle that dated back years. Accepted, welcome to the thread. Feel free to make an intro or wait for another player to intro with. My guess is that most characters will be arriving or already present in the capital, and I plan to introduce NPCs from there on in based on what characters we have.

Name: Thomas "Kingsblood" Morgan Age: 34 Gender: Male Race: 'Half-Elf' Appearance: Thomas has very handsome features, cutting a very nice figure, betraying his older age, making him appear closer to 20. Possessing an athletic build, it is obvious that Thomas is very fit and suited for his job. Thomas has brown hair, long and burly, that partially hangs in his face. The hair partially obscures his visions most of the time, due to it's length, which provokes Thomas to hurriedly push it out of his face. Thomas' eyes are color a very bright blue, which set against his brown hair and fair skin make them appear even brighter. Thomas possesses no facial hair whatsoever, and appears to be unable to grow any either. This can be attributed to his Elven bloodline. Thomas stands about 6'2'', which combined with his muscular figure, leads him to pose a very authoritative air about him. His facial features are not soft by any means. His skin seems rough, judged by looking at it, as if it was carved from the bark of a tree. Although, when touched, the skin is silk smooth, and is removed from any type of hair. Clothing: As part of the Lifeguard of the king, Thomas typically wears the standard uniform of the Lifeguard most of the time. In his down time, in what little he has, Thomas opts to wear clothes fit for his heritage. Tight fitting tunic, and pants, both colored brown and emblazoned with the sigil of his family, a white tree with no leaves on it's branches. The sigil is small on his pants, positioning itself on the upper right part of his pants. The sigil on his tunic remains right above his heart, about 3 inches wide, and 3 inches long in size. Thomas also has taken to wearing the customary cloak when out of uniform, which seems popular with the people in Estovet. The cloak is faded light blue, with many mud stains, and white marks, down the length of it. Weaponry: Instead of opting for the traditional weapons of the Lifeguard, Thomas instead uses his family's ancestral Elven sword, made of extremely sharp steel. The blade, while possesses the qualities of steel, is said to have it's own magical properties. The sword is a regular sized long sword, possessing a light blue hilt, a brown leather handle, and a blue diamond pommel. The blade of the sword is the most special thing about it. The blade is pale, like milk, and shines as bright as any light when exposed to the sun. Despite it's length, the sword is extremely light, operating almost like a feather in the hand of the wielder. In runes of the long forgotten civilizations of the Elves, is written the name of the sword; Harmony. The sword is said to be more than 8000 years old, passed down from generation to generation in the Morgan family. Due to be taught in the style of sword-and-free style of combat, Thomas opts to have a free hand with fighting with his sword, allowing him to more elaborate flourishes, and thrusts, while keeping his balance, an art learned from the Elves called 'Light Fighting'. The sword resides in a sheath, that is tied tight around Thomas' waist at all times, almost never without it. The sheath is pure black, made of leather, with a white trim to the sheath. Small blue diamonds embedded down the centre of the sheath cause it to shine slightly. Thomas was given the sword at the age of 8, and was trained with it by a Master-of-Arms until he was nearly 23 years old, leaving him extremely skilled in the art of swordplay. Personality: Due to his upbringing, which tried to emulate Elven upbringing, Thomas is extremely honorable and honest, which can hurt him sometimes. Thomas was taught to always tell the truth, and always treat others as equals, and treat those above you as if they were walking Gods. This has led to Thomas being a extremely reliable Lifeguard member. Thomas' honor defines his life, and all his actions, never leaving a moment where Thomas isn't 'on duty'. Thomas also has learned to be extremely just, following laws often to the dot, despite circumstance. History: Thomas grew up in a far away land called the Alinor, said to be the ancient home of the Elves. The land was bountiful, lush, and beautiful. Unfortunately, it was also in heavy turmoil. The Morgan family ruled over the land of Alinor, which approached the size of Estovet in sheer size, but was actually only partially populated. The Morgan Family traces it's lineage back to the old civilizations of the Elves, claiming to have married and sire children with the Elves, leading them to call themselves 'Half-Elves'. Thomas' father, Archibald the Last Elf, was a man of extreme honor and ruled over the land of Alinor. While Archibald's nickname was 'The Last Elf' it referred more to his style of rule and lifestyle, than bloodline. In truth, Archibald had no more elf blood than Thomas. Archibald led the Royal forces in a destructive civil war against the lords of Alinor, that lasted nearly 20 years. Thomas was born in the final years of the civil war, which saw Archibald execute many of the rebel leaders, using the traditional form of Elven execution know as 'The Eagle', The Eagle involved cutting the ribs of the victim by the spine, breaking them so they resembled wings, and then pulling the victim’s lungs out through the opening. Salt would then be dry-rubbed on the wound. This led to Archi being labeled as a tyrant and cruel ruler. Vassals of the king openly plotted his assassination, while Archi comfortably sat on his throne. When Thomas was 15, his father named him his personal bodyguard, which placed Thomas in the view of Archibald's day-to-day affairs. Thomas witnessed absolute horror, as he watched prisoners treated to The Eagle treatment hang above Lily Palace, the seat of King Archibald. Thomas remembered his upbringing, and dutifully served his father. When Thomas was 21, civil war once again broke out in Alinor. Thomas was left to rule Lily Palace, as Archibald went off to fight the war. This war was shorter, lasting only two years, and leaving half the country on fire. During Thomas' regency, he had time to ponder his father's sins. Soon, Archibald returned to the Palace, done with the civil war. As he walked into the King's Hall, Thomas sat upon the throne. As Archibald approached the throne, Thomas stood up and hugged his father, congratulating him on his victory, shortly before stabbing his father in the heart with a hidden dagger. Archibald collapsed, dying. Thomas then fled the kingdom, leaving it in the hands of the Master-at-Arms. Thomas took Harmony, along with a small purse of gold, and left for a far away land he had heard of in stories, called Estovet. Thomas arrived at Keilaudrin, and instantly began making a name for himself, by participating in tournaments, winning the majority of them. By the time he was 25, after winning multiple tournaments, Thomas swore an oath to the King, and took up membership of the Lifeguard. Thomas has ignored his past life, preferring to forget about it. One thing, sticks with him from his old home, though, and that is his families' motto; Just and Loyal.

Name: Sophia Octavia

Age:16

Gender: Female

Race: Human

Appearance/Clothing: Sophia is a small, fragile looking girl, standing just over five feet tall. She is rather thin, though not enough to appear unhealthy. She has lightly tanned skin, several shades lighter than most of her countrymen, and light yellow eyes that seem to radiate warmth and goodwill. Her face is fair and nearly always sports a brilliant smile. Her dark hair is extremely long, reaching her waist, and has been meticulously cared for. A single streak of brilliant white runs amongst the black locks.

Despite her slight frame, Sophia's style of dress clearly shows her royal status. Her wrists are adorned with polished bracelets of solid gold. The jewelry has been fashioned into the appearance of a snake with carefully engraved scales running the entire length of the bands. The serpents' eyes are shimmering rubies. Sophia also wears a golden ring inset with a another larger ruby. Around her neck the princess wears a thin gold chain bearing a small medallion. The medallion is engraved with a depiction of a winged serpent, the national sigil of Lyok. The princess wears a small gold circlet around her head. A single red gemstone is set in it's center. Sophia's dress is made of soft silk, dyed a brilliant crimson. The dress is covered in embroidery, all done in gold thread. The garment runs from her shoulders to the middle of her calf. It has no sleeves, leaving her arms bare. On her feet Sophia wears sandals made of red leather.

The princess has a great love for music, and often carries a flute with her in her travels. The instrument is made of ivory adorned with silver. It is usually carried in a pouch made of soft brown leather to protect it.

Weapons: None.

Personality: Sophia is generally quite kind to those around her, even strangers. She has a certain warmth about her personality that radiates quickly, a trait that has made her quite popular among the people of Lyok. She is compassionate, especially towards the poor or sick, and strives to be helpful. In aristocratic company, she is quite respectful, having been taught the ways of the court from a young age. She has a soft voice that maintains an almost song-like quality. Despite, or perhaps because of her kindness, she also is a bit naïve, tending to trust those around her easily. She has been sheltered within the walls of Veranthium for most of her life, and thus can be quite sensitive at times.

History: Sophia is the youngest daughter of Empress Angelica Octavia of Lyok, a thriving empire to the east known the world over for their expertise in matters of trade and war. She has two older sisters. Her brother, the oldest of the four children, died in combat while she was still quite young. Sophia grew up in Veranthium, the capitol of Lyok, and learned the ways of the court from her mother and sisters. As she grew older, Sophia became quite popular amongst both the aristocrats and the common folk, often walking the streets of Veranthium for hours on end to meet her mother's subjects.
She began visiting other countries as an ambassador of Lyok in her early teens with her sisters. She, along with her bodyguard, was sent to Keilaudrin to promote peace and goodwill between the nations.
Name: Jezin Tremora

Age: 24

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Appearance/Clothing: Jezin has a thin, wiry frame, consisting mostly of muscle. He is roughly average height, standing in the vicinity of six feet tall. His skin is dark and heavily tanned, and his eyes are a deep shade of brown. His hair is black, straight, and hangs just past his chin. He has a short goatee that is kept rather neat, and a thin face with high cheekbones.

Jezin wears the armor of the Brass Hand, the Lyoki royal family's personal guard. His chest piece consists of a long shirt of scale mail made of a hard metal with a similar appearance to copper. The shirt hangs down nearly to his knees and his held tight around his waist with a sturdy leather belt that carries his sword and dagger. The cuirass' sleeves reach to the soldier's elbows, where they are met by vambraces made of the same metal as the chest piece. Beneath the long shirt, he wears a simple shirt made of black cloth and trousers made of reinforced leather. His legs are protected by knee-high boots made of the same metal as his other armor.

Over his armor, Jezin wears a long red cloak. The garment is bound at his neck by a brooch bearing the symbol of the Brass Hand: a serpent circling the imprint of a gauntlet-clad hand. The seams of the cloak are adorned with gold thread, befitting his high rank amongst the Lyoki military. Occasionally, Jezin wears his helmet, though it is usually only used in combat situations or while he is at his post in Veranthium. The helmet is the same color as his other armor, but is engraved on either side with the symbol of the Brass Hand. The helmet protects the sides, top, and back of the head, but leaves the front open for more visibility. The helmet has a strip of metal running down the middle of the face to protect the wearer’s nose. The top of the helmet has a long red plume attached to it that hangs down to Jezin's lower back.

Weapons: Jezin's primary weapon is a spear roughly seven feet in length. The head is about a foot and a half long with a wide, double-edged blade, making it useful for both thrusting and slashing attacks. The shaft is made of strong ash dyed a dark red. It is internally reinforced with a thin bar of iron. The blade is made of high-quality steel.

Jezin usually uses his spear one-handed in conjunction with a shield. His shield is made of polished copper reinforced with steel plate. The winged serpent of Lyok is engraved in great detail on the shield's face. The shield is roughly two feet wide and nearly an inch thick. When not in use, Jezin sometimes wears the shield on his back.

Though his spear is his primary weapon, Jezin carries a sword as a sidearm. The weapon is about three feet in length. Has a slightly curving blade made of steel, heavily sharpened to make it and excellent cutting weapon. The sword has a rectangular guard made of polished brass and an ivory hilt. The pommel is made of brass and has been molded into the shape of a viper's head, with rubies inset for the eyes. The weapon's sheath is made of hard leather lined with brass and hangs at the soldier's side.

Jezin's only other weapon is a short dagger with a triangular blade made explicitly for piercing thick plate armor. The blade has no edge, but a heavily sharpened tip. Because of it's triangular design, the weapon is incredibly sturdy. The weapon has a brass crossguard and a handle made of red ash. It is about nine inches in length.

Personality: Jezin is a prideful knight, and is quite confident in his abilities. He has a sharp wit and can come off as somewhat arrogant. Despite this, he is fiercely loyal to the Octavias and takes his defense of the family very seriously. He is protective of the young princess and is slow to trust anyone around her. He is respectful of authority for the most part, having been trained in discipline by the Lyoki military from a young age.

History: Jezin was born to a minor noble house in Lyok. He joined the Lyoki military at the age of fourteen, and quickly became known for his skill with a spear. He climbed the ranks very quickly, eventually joining the Brass Hand at the age of nineteen. He guarded the family for several years before being appointed as the personal bodyguard of Princess Sophia Octavia.

Name: Gareth Harker
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Race: Half-Elf

Appearance/Clothing: Gareth, a product of a human father and an Elven mother, came forth unto the world as a comely amalgamation of the inherently youthful appearance of the Elves and the firm strength of mankind, his physical form not characteristic of a frail being. Strong muscle graces his body, with legs ready to race athletes through the streets, despite that he is by no means the strongest fighter. His face is softer than most men's, exuding a quality of softness that betrayed his stalky and stalwart stature. He possesses a square jaw, lined with soft stubble, high cheekbones and gently-tanned skin, framed by nigh-black hair and dark, blue eyes. Not of high warrior status, he bears no tough armor to fortify himself, rather he dons a blue hood and cloak over a tan, cotton shirt and umber pants and paces ground silently in tough leather boots.

Weapons: Though he is no warrior, Gareth is a decently skilled bowman, wielding a longbow, made of hard oak, edged at the handhold by an arrowhead-shaped iron guard. This bow was given to him by his mother to defend himself as he grew, an old bow passed down through his family first forged by one of his ancestors roughly a hundred years ago. Being a bow with magical potential, it was enchanted for durability and the piercing of weak armor, charms of utility to make the bow more useful, left on the bow for many years through the ruby gem set into its grip. Aside from his bow, he wields in both hands simple battle axes, weapons he's only decent with.

Personality: Raised in his father's ways of diligence and humility, Gareth isn't inclined to the type of egotism seen in other people. Perhaps, however, he might be too tough on his own character and looks at himself with misplaced deprecation that curses him with low self-esteem. Gareth has a difficult time controlling his emotions, thus they get the better of him, a very passionate youth who feels deeply. All around he is honest and trustworthy, telling small white lies every now and then to make peace, although his responsibility falters often, a trait that's followed him since his childhood. His mother disposed him towards a lack of judgment on fellow men and a code of honor in treating all with virtuous conduct and raised him to see the good in others where it may lie and distinguish it from the bad without harsh scrutiny. Gareth falls behind in resisting anger, and he grapples with a nagging emptiness in his heart, a feeling of sadness that arises on its own. He may give himself too much in love for other people, and he is vexed by social contact with other people, being quite bashful himself until he can warm up to someone or gather the courage to speak or act. Despite his debilitating imperfections, within himself he holds an aptitude for scholarly thought, and a prowess with persuasion and critical thought, gained from his adept intelligence and affinity for books.

History: Gareth was born to a human father from Mullen and a religious, full-Elven mother who came from Lumina, an Elven kingdom on the northwestern side of the continent. He was raised in another city of Keilaudrin, away from Mullen, by his parents, who defended him in his childhood and raised him in virtue to save him from becoming wretched and corrupt like the many groups that instigated the chaos of the lands far and wide. When he came of age to leave on his own, he discerned that he would travel to Mullen, the city of his father's origin, and he was vested with the weapons he now bears for protection. As of yet, he sits in the middle of choosing a profession, whether he joins the Lifeguard or works as a candlemaker or something other, and thus while in waiting for his choice, he performs simple tasks and jobs for his neighbors, some of which he considers friends, in Mullen, using the rewards he receives to maintain his lifestyle and gaining favor and small recognition among some fellow citizens for his benevolence and aid, neither famous nor invisible.

Rup, you're accepted but please make sure to find that appearance.

Also accepted Raven. Lumina would probably be in the mesh of nations in the northwest where actual elves still remain on Estovet but that's still other side of the continent.

We've got enough people to start now so I'll have an IC intro up in a bit.

I'm going to throw a question out here, namely because it's a point of confusion for me. What exactly are the security measures in the palace (for example, clearances to enter specific areas and guard stations), and what sort of things are happening around the palace grounds in the celebrations before the coronation? I'm attempting to make a post at the moment, but I need to know those details in particular to make the entrance I'm going for.

The Grand Hall (the dinner hall) and the throne room are open to visitors, but most of the personal wings, I.E the King's chambers and the chambers of officials, are off limits. The outside of the Palace is completely open to visitors. City Watch is watching areas outside, with guards placed every so often, while the Lifeguard patrol the Palace and guard off limit places.

And as for what's going on around the palace grounds, a lot of gossiping and drinking but nothing particularly flamboyant yet, the celebration proper has yet to begin so it's more or less old friends and enemies exchanging greetings. Workers are moving things into position or cooking the things that need a long time.
