They absorb basically any energy within a certain radius, depending primarily on the size of the crystal. The size also determines how much can be absorbed. Once enough energy is absorbed, the crystal becomes "saturated", and any energy added beyond that point pushes energy already stored within the crystal out, emitting Calzantine radiation, which is uniquento these crystals. This radiation can be "filtered" through specific other materials to create interesting effects, the ones which you see used frequently in combat and, as I was going to say in one of my lore segments, Alliance prisons cells.

But by "work," I primarily mean on a molecular scale.

Why U so picky. Like I said, I've never gone into much thought about how they work, so just gimme a few to think.

Basing everything on realism really is no fun. I know we've had this argument before, but in order for my branch of control (technology) to be truly present, some things are just going to have to be based on science that we in the real world can't even begin to understand yet.

All I want is a hint of the category of science. For example, the Codex control things by sending waves that cause particles to move in different patterns, and these waves are generated and manipulated in the brains of the Codex. But I don't agree that it's no fun to base things on realism; I do it myself, and it just takes creativity and some out of the box thought.

It's awkward to respond to an observation like that.

I did think of an explanation, but I meant the fact that everything has to have a root from a realistic concept. It's somewhat limiting in my eyes. I get a lot of joy from looking at a piece of technology seen in a movie or described in a novel and wondering how it works, but never needing to now how.

The energy gets trapped in the crystal's unique lattice, which is formed from the anomaly nonmetal Calzite, an anomaly element that is the opposite of technetium in that it is stable when it should be too large to be, and Aluminum. The nuclear charge is so large, as the element has an incredibly large atomic number, that the size of the atom is very small in comparison to other atoms. The minimal space in between the ions in the lattice makes for an an excellent way to trap the energy within the lattice of the crystals once it has passed been absorbed by the crystal. The shape of the network is what allows it to enter but not leave.

How? The hole was smaller than the size of his foot, and next to the crack in the ground, not in it.

I get more joy from knowing how something works, and can't stand not knowing. But here's a compromise: you make whatever tech you want, and I'll figure out how it works.

If that's what would make you happy. I mean, I don't do it with absolutely everything, but the things which I do I would rather remain as they are, for the sake of the wonder.

I didn't mean for it to give that tone. Seriously, I'm totally fine with it if I don't have to root everything I make in a modern scientific concept. If you want to do so to make the experience more enjoyable for you, then that's what you should do. It's a win-win.
