The way I read it is Ki falls into the trope of Might be Magic, Might be Mundane. Insofar that you can't accomplish anything with it that couldn't be waved away as a feat of strength or skill. Like focusing your ki to enable an especially deadly blow others would just chock up to being an exceptionally lucky or well placed punch.

Also, for what it's worth, I'm going the same route with Taula's 'I draw strength from the skin of powerful beasts' gimmick--but if your bare fisted warrior monk makes the grade I'll probably edit her to use true sympathetic magic instead of just Beowulfing people up. Last thing I want to be doing is horn in on someone else's act.

Rayn Night: Let's see if I can explain this. Ki is really just a philosophy, and a way of training. High-level fighters in this setting are unquestionably superhuman, and it doesn't really matter whether you're Inigo Montoya or Kwai Chang Caine - once you reach the upper tiers of martial ability in this setting, either one could ram their naked fist through the skull of a regular human. Ki-users just evoke a more eastern style, with tai chi swords and nunchucks and meditation and acrobatics and what not; a fencer could use a comb or a toothpick about as well as a kung fu type could use his fists. A yoga master might be able to slow his heartbeat and hold his breath for three hours, but a ranger could do that too, if that's the type of character you're playing.

Once you surpass the limits of ordinary humans in this setting, all styles are basically equal - the difference exists so people can use any character archetype they prefer. So yes, basically what Acrolith is saying.

As for your suggested introduction, I don't actually get it. Keeping the king sane? What's that supposed to mean?

Acrolith: Looks pretty good, and has evaded the greatest concerns I had for applications to this game in general. It's actually nice to see someone not being afraid to take charge of some setting details. Just a few things:

The archipelago is pretty untamed, and there are monsters everywhere, not to mention non-human but still sentient races. Non-human combatants are very common. Fighting them unarmed, though, I'll grant you that's a different matter.

Finally, though I may not really be one to talk, your writing gets a little flowery now and again.

this might be jumping the gun, but it may be fun to work out the relationships between characters, since we'll all likely have somewhat substantial pre-histories before the start of the RP.

@Maxwell = Right-o! I'll make note of the fact we'll be pretty much falling over monsters and try to prune my writing habits off a bit.

@Flagg = I'm certainly game, anyone who wants to do so is more than welcome to shoot some info my way. In fact I already slipped in some stuff regarding the wise and powerful stormsinger into Taula's CS.

Wait, Maxwell, I'm confused. So have all the previous kings also been names Erasmus? Or did they have different names? I only ask because I'm going to add a brief 'Former Royal Protectors' section to my CS, which means I'm going to mention these former kings.

I'd take the real world Louis XIII of France as an example. Not only was his father simply known as Henry IV but both he and his son were also monarchs of the Kingdom of Navarre. ((it joined with France by personal union in 1589 when King Henry III of Navarre inherited the French throne as Henry IV of France, and in 1620 it was merged into the Kingdom of France.))

So Louis XIII King of France was also Louis II King of Navarre, son to Henry IV King of France, who was Henry III King of Navarre.

In short? You can probably add whatever numbers where you want and be completely cool, so long as you make sure that our King Erasmus VI didn't come after an Erasmus VII or some such. Make sense?

Yes, yes it does. I just wanted to get it straight from the horse's mouth, as they say. Meh, I can always go back and edit things if need be.

On an unrelated note, if you're looking to pick out some neat names for past kings I'd check out yafnag

Also a question for Maxwell of my own: Just how much of a melting pot is the Kingdom of Altranor? Would it be common practice to push the less desirable non-humans into slums or is the prevailing school of thought along the lines of 'separate but equal?' Does the kingdom subscribe to racial nationalism in that it is a human kingdom, but tolerant non-humans? Is the law a 'Justice for Some' archetype wherein humans can walk over non-humans without fear of legal recourse?

Well, Erasmus is a late Grecian name so I've been sticking mainly to those types of names. I try to ensure the names I choose for characters, NPCs, and whatnot have some basis in real world culture. Just a personal preference.

@Lexicon = Neat. I tent to mix and match with existing language and fictitious flair. For instance, my character's last name, Ungeirtytär makes use of a Finnish Patronymic convention. As such it reads like Taula, Ungeir's daughter.

I love naming conventions. And such wonderful questions and answers! Also, yay for character relationships! My addition to such shall hopefully be coming soon, I'm moving like a sloth today. By the way, Acrolith, I really like the name Taula. Is that your invention or from a different language? Either way, nice. :)

Hmmm... Alright, makes more sense. I wanted to extend the Ki powers a little further but I'm gonna see what I can do with what you have told me

Might go with a mix of Elemental Affinity (Magic) with some martial arts prowess :P

And nevermind the Sane part :P I'll just be the Kings Personal Servant and Diplomate/Translator

@Nemaisare = Just another thing yafnag spat out at me.

@Lexicon = I recently added a blurb about Taula and Riven's relationship just after the part about Nykerius. I'd love to get some feedback on it.

@Flagg = I'll be scribbling up a blurb on the captain as well.

Also remember that these are all worded to be Taula's opinion on the other characters. Her dislike of Nykerius could be unreciprocated for example. Feel free to scribble up your own blurbs about Taula or each other if you're so inclined.

This is definitely the case. Nykerius would be amused by Taula's dislike of him and his arcane magic, nothing more.

Great, look forward to reading it! I may follow my own suggestion and add a few blurbs as well, though my character seems to be the biggest outsider so far, and may not know the other characters as well as they know each other.

@ Acrolith: I love it! I can totally see Riven suffering through Taula nitpick sessions lol. One thing I did want to mention, though Taula wouldn't know this, is that Riven definitely wasn't coddled as a child. You don't just inherit the title of Royal Protector, you have to become the Royal Protector. I'll include bits and pieces of this in the 'Abilities' portion of my sheet. Other than that, I think these two could have some fun interactions. Since Galene is dead maybe Riven even views Taula as a mother figure of sorts. Of course, she'd never admit that to Taula. Ever.

@ Lexicon = I had actually been counting on the fact that Riven wasn't, these are just Taula's opinions on people after all. It's coddled in the sense that Taula was raised amid a tide of constant war. ((Picture her upbringing as a montage from 300)) By the time Taula was nine she'd already added the first names to her kynneskr, names from the other children she'd been raised with. So from her point of view it's a thought along the lines of "Riven doesn't kill with the same ease and indifference it takes to walk across a room? Spoiled girl." It's a culture shock thing.

@ Acrolith: Brilliant. This is going to be fun.

Should have my sheet finished tonight or tomorrow, maybe Sunday at the latest. Considering how long my sheet is already, I'm not going to add a relationships section. I'm up for talking about it here or via PM if you'd like. After I finish my sheet, of course.
