Griffin tried not to get his hopes up as he made his way through the castle. He didnt know what the king wanted with him, and he didnt really care. The kings request for his presence at the castle could be just the oppurtunity that he need. He had a rough plan. He just needed a little more gold to pull it off. He hoped tha the king would give him that oppurtunity. He hurried through the halls of his castle towards the throne room.

Laila busied herself with tasks that needed to be done. There was the little one's clothing that needed to be washed, along with dishes. Each day, she thought of her mother and what she might be doing. Perhaps occupying her own mind, as Laila was doing? As she lifted a fragile glass bowl into the sink to be washed, it slipped from her grasp and shattered on the floor beneath her. Her cloth shoes barely protected her own feet - a piece of glassed managed to poke through the cloth and into her foot. A slave that had been watching her shook his head in disappointment, and Laila could only sigh. They weren't allowed to communicate.

"Gather the servants and slaves." The king ordered as Griffin entered the throne room. While he waited Griffinnlooked around the throne room. He had never seen anything like it. Which considering the way he grew up wasn't really saying much. As he looked around he noticed an old woman hovering at the kings elbow. He wondered who she was. He also wondered why the servants and slaves needed to be present.

The other slave was assisting Laila in removing the glass shard from her foot when a high-ranked servant entered the room. "You both need to be seen in the throne room," she said. "At once."

She vanished. Laila hurried in wrapping her foot with gauze that the other slave had retrieved. She slipped her cloth shoe back onto her foot, and followed as the other slave led her to the throne room. Gathered there were all of the other slaves and servants who served the King's family. Among them, Laila's mother. She quietly slid over to her mother and hugged her quickly before turning her attention to the king.

"The princess has been cursed." the king told them. He indicated to the old women beside him. "My prophet tells me that the only way to save my daughter is to send a Mage and a slave on a quest to gather the ingredients for the curse. The Mage that best matches the description is the shadow mage Griffin. Sir you must choose among those here for the slave or servant that you feel will help you complete this quest."

Griffin looked up surprised. Was that why he been chosen over his father? His description matched that of some vague prophesy? Griffin shook his head in disbelief. She didn't really care why he was chosen. He was not about to refuse this opportunity at freedom. he looked at the slaves and servants wondering how to pick one.

Laila took a breath and squeezed her mother's hand. She did not want to be picked - of anything, she just hoped to stay here in the castle, rather than go out and get lost. Maybe even killed, along with some stranger. She tried to make herself as unnoticed as possible, and hoped for the best.

Griffin soon decided had no idea how to pick who to take with him on this quest. He decided to let his magic decide. He needed someone that responded to his magic so it made sense to use it to help him decide. He sent his magic winding through the slaves and servants until he got a good response. He followed his magic through the group until he stopped in front of Laila. "She is the one I need."

Laila's heart fell when he spoke. She let go of her mother's hand and stepped forward. There was nothing else she could do. She only hoped that maybe it wouldn't be as bad or dangerous as she thought it might be. For the first time in a long time, she spoke. One word. "Fine."

Griffin winced at the girls lack of interest. Didn't she want more out of life then to be someone's property? He hoped he made the right choice. As long as she didn't keep him from completing the quest he didn't care how she felt. He didn't have the luxtury of caring. He turned to the king.

"Gold and supplies have been prepared for you." The king told them. "You will need to collect ten items and return with them within a months time or the princess will die. A list if items needed fr the cure will be found in you pack. Your first stop is the city of Avel."

Laila kept her expression neutral. She looked at Griffin and stared at him for a long time before asking, "Shall we go get the pack?"

What she felt couldn't be expressed. Part of her was happy to be leaving this place - to be seeing different cities. Part of her wanted to stay. Here, she knew everything. She knew where her mother was, she knew her duties. Out there, she didn't. What if she had decided to leave while out? Could she? Would she? If so, would it last? She wouldn't even know where to start, out in the real world. She basically had it made, here in the castle. She was conflicted.

Griffin nodded. He turned and headed out of the throne room. He hoped she would follow willingly. He didn't want to have to resort to chains. He hated chains and he decently wasn't going to drag her. He didn't want her in his personal space. He kept an even pace as he made his way through the castle. He figured he should make it almost make it to the edge of city before his leg would start aching bag enough for her to notice his limp. He was hoping to put it off as long as possible. At the drawbridge one of the guards said. "This is your bag." He handed Griffin a small red drawstring bag.

Laila followed him willingly, until they reached the drawbridge. She hesitated and stood still as Griffin trudged forward. Not knowing if she wanted to see the outside of her city's walls, she took a breath and moved forward. Her feet worked against her own will. In the castle, Laila had always been good and obeyed everything that anyone had ordered her to do. This was the only time she was hesitant. How could she not be? She was leaving her home. The place where she had been born and raised. From an early age, she was taught to obey. Clean, cook, organize. That was her life. Nobody ever told her she would be going on quests with strangers. Why would she? What made her so special?

"Wait," she called out to Griffin, realizing she'd fallen behind. She ran up to him and then apologized, "I'm sorry, sir. I got behind."

"My name is Griffin not sir." Griffin told her. "You might as well use my name. What's your name?" he asked he couldn't just call her slave or servant. He needed something else to call her. "I know crossing this bridge will be difficult and overwhelming." he knew because he felt the same way. Oddly in a lot of ways she had had more freedom then he had. He headed across the bridge. He knew from this day forward his life would never be the same.

"I apologize, Griffin," she said, poison in her words. "My name is Laila Pinserp."

Then, she nodded at his statement. She did agree that it would be. The only times she had ever left the castle was to retrieve something from the store for a member of the family. Once, she had been completely in charge of restocking the medicinal stash.

"It is nice to meet you Leila. Tell me when you need to rest or wish your to eat." He didn't know what she was accustomed to when it came to travel. He was likely to need to rest than she would. Still he didn't want her to be afraid to tell him what she needed. He headed down the path. He was able to keep the pace for a couple of hours before his limp became obvious. He wondered if she would say anything.

Laila walked alongside her new companion, standing tall with her head held high - something she normally didn't do. As they made their way further down the path, she noticed that the man had begun to limp. She held her tongue for a while, before the question tore through her lips, "What's wrong with your leg?"

"Some of the muscles have died. It will only slow us down alittle." Griffin assured his. The pain was getting worse and he knew he was going to have to stop soon but the good news was that the sun was starting to set so it was a good time to stop anyway. He moved off the path. He sank tiredly under a tree. He pulled out the small bag the guard had given him. "How does fish sound? We'll eat and then I'll set up a tent for you."

"I'm allergic to meat," Laila stated simply. She examined Griffin for a while, just looking at him. He wasn't an unattractive person, though he wasn't the most good-looking either. Her eyes were cast down to look at his leg, and she asked again, with more force, "What happened to your leg?"

"I've heard of people not liking meat but never anyone who was allergic to it. I guess it's a good the that fruits and vegetables travel better than meat. I've got apples, potties and corn at the moment." Griffin frown when she asked again about his leg. He didnt like talking about what happened. Still he figured she deserved some details. After all they were going to depend on each other. "The injury is a gift from my father."
