Different languages are not uncommon. There are languages that exist that I dont know exist. A majority of the information we take in is visual. We are attune to what appears as "normal." But when we see something out of place and are already in a hightened state of awareness we are more likely to notice. It is a perfectly normal reaction.

notice how we seem balanced they got one future person in each team

one really ancient person in each team, though the most ancient thing we have is a woodcutter from most basic games which need resource collecting besides Age of Empires lets see, okay today his the Orc Woodcutter from Warcraft

I think the only notes for that post are that I'm generalising some or other dialect of old French into Frankish and canonising Sidwell as knowing middle ages Latin, limited mostly to prayers or songs. It was already canon that he's a huge blubbering pansy.

I so want to reply to your post, but I am going to wait a bit to let others respond. Zosime's going to be like "I know those words, but that sentence makes no sense" with the latin.

Everyone: do we have an agreed-upon standard method of crossing language barriers? The mental translation thing seems like a straigtforward mechanism. What about people who speak all languages? Do we want to agree that all languages are translated, or maybe just the first one spoken?

I feel like eventually we're gonna need a way to cross over that barrier. We're gonna need to be able to work together at some point, and even though the tower of babel was a charming story, it didn't end too well xD

I think everything should be translated. The structure of the sentences may be off kilter a bit but if the purpose is to eliminate language barriers then why would it leave a language barrier? Also first language spoken may not be the best method because languages can borrow from each other. So I could say something that is not English that is used in English.

I was thinking about things like @Antarctic Termite's character praying in latin, or the fact that my character speaks several (unhelpful) languages.

Do I understand correctly that some players prefer a mild language barrier for characterization purposes, while others would rather understand everyone all the time?

Honestly I'm just interested in as much simplicity as possible.

A possible solution might be to leave it up to the individual players to interpret what is being said and how it's understood, and we'll chalk any discrepancies up to the fact that the mechanism is subjective to each character.
