Fair points about the average height (it is just bizarre for me to see 1.6 meters referred to as "average", without too much context provided).
Though, it also should be noted that the average heights of that time - from what I've been told by people of the field and read myself - mainly came from (occasionally rather severe) malnutrition. That, in turn, meant that there was a glaring rift between the average height of the common peasant and that of the higher class people - in that the higher class people actually had heights somewhat similar to people of our time, and only the peasants were distinctly short compared to modern humans. (Makes sense in other ways, too - genetic influences would hardly change that much in mere half a dozen generations.)
- And indeed, if you look at the original armors of that time - and especially plate armors of that time were almost exclusively worn higher-class people, as you well know and have pointed out yourself in the past -, then many of those would actually fit a person of around my height just fine. (Not my over-two-meter-tall male cousins, though; no antique plate armor for them.)

(By the way, as you might have already gathered from my sheet - my personal character actually used to be noticeably shorter in life, even if she was considered tall and sturdy in there, too.)

Another figment of thought on the previous topic: There is also always the matter of the environment of a fictive world being not necessarily identical to that of Earth (and even Earth varied by region quite a lot). Say, if your medieval world has priests who can actually summon and dismiss rain at will, then I'd say it is quite safe to claim that crop dearth due to either too little or too much water is a significantly less common occurrence (as is the starvation that'd otherwise come with it).

And also, even though it doesn't mean a whole lot from me, to Dark Jack and Ashgan, those where some pretty solid initial posts. I just sorta feel like I dumped my shit all over them.

Hello everyone :). Before you think I just posted my app without rhyme or merit I applied in a PM so I have been accepted :P.

I'm going to try and get my first post done for tonight but I can't promise. My understanding of starting is you're always alone at the beginning, but for later posts my is question is: do you find other people by choice or is it something put upon you?

Finally . Alright, first post is up and I'm lost as ever :P. I think I've put myself near one or two people but I can't be sure- I guess if anyone heard or saw him when he dug himself free then I have no objections as otherwise I'll just hope I find someone's footprints :). I'm heading to bed now- Gnight everyone.

@SirBeowulf

I kinda like him too :). He's the third draft of a character that started out a little more- out of place I should say. I think his first draft might actually make a good NPC if the future calls for it.

You will never take me alive! I will call upon my dark magikz to curse your land for a bagillion years heckechehcksskaind I like cleavers btw :P

@goodmorrowtou

Thank you :)

Thanks, yo. I kinda like your posts too; particularly the background story surrounding the, what I assume to be, plot to torch a city, or at least part of it. I would probably use less capslock when writing dialogue, honestly, but otherwise the lines were good. Dampsey sounds stock british when I read him.

Edit: The memory of assassination in your character sheet is also written rather well, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

@bobert778 How does Pick not realize that he actually has the eponymous object stuck in his back? Did he never think to reach back and see if something was causing his pain? Kind of a miracle he can walk at all; not gonna be fun when somebody finally decides to pull it out.

I find this map he has quite intriguing. Presuming that he had it before he even died, and that it does actually match the lay of the land here, it would imply that the land betwixt shares a geographical similarity to the real world - which is a significant revelation. If we entertain this thought, it could allow us to learn a bunch of things about the things we see, simply by drawing a parallel to what would be their equivalent in the world of the living. If, you know, we actually knew anything about that world, as it were, which we don't. Oh well. I still like to consider it and, if it turns out to be true, then NewSun could easily lead our characters to encounter familiar places, or rather their twisted reflection in the mirror.

Edit: I guess, in general, it's an interesting prospect to consider the world that our characters come from. By looking at our various memories, we can clearly see that we have a rather colorful setting with rather varied peoples in it, stuck in very different stages of technological and societal progression. Granted, I still haven't read all sheets or posts (we have a huge amount of people here, all who write in copious amounts), but from what I can see so far, we have civilizations on one hand who would be considered modern at the time, with fully developed cities (like Hobbleston maybe, or the white-spired metropolis from the Oblivion Songstress), professional armies, apparently magic of some kind in certain places, and even ingenious little inventions like helmet lamps. On the other, we have places like where my own character comes from or the barbarians mentioned in Riley's sheet, that are reasonably primitive hunter-gatherer tribes, who are just recently grasping the art of building things like shelter or boats. We even have wild places in the countryside where slavers have free reign and justice seems a faraway thought. Plots of assassination are ripe, and neither the heathen whore, nor the careless king are safe from the murderer's blade. Wars of ideology, religious and otherwise are fought.

And here we are, knowing very little of any of that, as we must contend with the horrors beyond time and reality, as they prey upon our flesh and our minds. Ramble over.

@Ashgan

For a long enough time that Pick now only has a scant few memories, his short wake up routine is: Push self off the ground, try to avoid any action however minor that could cause death, discover a new wrong thing to do and die. The pain, which he believes is in his chest and not his back, has been the least of his worries. At this point he's started ignoring it is all since he can't properly feel it. As for someone trying to pull it out, we'll wait and see :).

Now regarding the map, I purposefully was very light in how I tread here. I have yet to describe anything else about the map, and there are mountains in the other world so this connection might be one that isn't there. I didn't even properly say where on the map the mountain is (only that it's in a corner), or if he's even reading it right. If these possible parallels are something NewSun wants to use then he may but for now things will remain vague and I'll keep my thoughts to myself ;). I have a plan, but it's very flexible.

Finally, yes the world before. While the oil headlamp is an invention that has only existed for a bit over 100 years (to my understanding), the world before doesn't seem to run perfectly with ours. 'Mer' are mentioned, and magic is apparently an existing factor. Normally when these are the case certain technologies can sprout up before their time. The idea of putting a lamp on a helmet was born of necessity, so the necessity could have come far sooner in the world our characters came from. That's all I have to say on my contribution to the confusion- I do my research to an extent :P

@Ashgan Yo, thanks. And you're on the right track with that assumption about the memory. Also, with your post, I really do like how you added the concept of killing to regain identity. It adds a new level of depth to the hell.
P.S. I hold shift key like a boss, no caps lock. But I'll make note of being sparser with the capitalizing for emphasis.

J o h n C l e a v e r T h e P o r t r a i t

This is a mirror into perhaps another world, to another time and place; one beyond the poison realm of the Land Betwixt. It is a beautiful locket that has manifested from some unknown force, contained within is a portrait of something that John cannot share, something that he keeps to himself, something he keeps personal. It s a perfect likeness of something beautiful, and gazing upon it gives immeasurable strength to the man who perhaps was a disappointment to those left in his life. The rim of the heart-shaped pendant is engraved with a few words, most of which are worn away or scratched off; only two are still legible: ‘Dearest John’.

Whilst the painterly child has this locket resting at his heart, the ravages of the world will not touch him, hunger and thirst give way to the power contained within, but to him, and him alone.
If John were to sacrifice the memory, then perhaps the sickened world he now finds himself in would, for a time, perhaps mirror that of the world John was born into, and maybe it would harbour fruits and game and running water; a small space of a land without hope would become an oasis, a beacon in the darkest of nights… just like the subject of The Portrait so dear to John.
