You showed up.

One way or another, you've arrived at my profile. You've taken a wrong turn in an alleyway because you didn't pay enough attention to your map. You've heard of something cool and new and thought maybe you'd see what all the fuss is about? Or maybe it is that you noticed like me updating my status or were lurking through an RP or something I am in and just kinda clicked my profile, that happens too. Regardless, you'll come to learn that your actions have consequences. Not this one since you can always just, like, leave.

I have a few names and I don't mind being called whatever you fancy at that given time. KingofTheSpectrum, FamishedPants, ChadChadlainn. Any derivative of these is fine as well. Most tend to use Pants, however. I'm nearing my thirties and enjoy games, anime, V-tubers, and visual novels. You can find my still-obsolete list here as it contains everything important on it.

As for games particularly, I am a huge fan of Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid, Nier and its sequel, FFXIV, and recently, Project Wingman.I tend to lean towards shooters and action games, but I have also wasted 8+ years on League of Legends. I think the only games I tend to avoid are card games and sports games, but there can always be exceptions.

For anime, I tend to watch whatever looks entertaining. It doesn't have to be good. I've seen a lot of the generic, poor-quality isekai harems that are out there. It's difficult to remember what I actually genuinely like, but Chaika the Coffin Princess comes to mind, as well as FMA: Brotherhood. I'm currently enjoying Tokyo Revengers.

I've read my fair share of visual novels, as my list would tell you. I can't recommend going through Muv Luv Extra/Unlimited, then playing Alternative enough! Big fan of Rance, Grisaia no Kajitsu, and Demonbane as well. I could probably go on and on about them, but I'll stop here.

Also, fuck you, Broken.

I did intend for two instances.
@FamishedPants@ERode Just for clarity, it's going to do as much damage as an E-rank damage note would normally do to espers/magi. So think cuts that are deep enough to bleed. Not something that can be ignored, but not life threatening on their own.

Yeah, that is how it was intended. Of course, if you think it sounds too weak I can always change it to a Damage X. :^)
Yeesh, I get it. Sam hates humans.

You can say that after his face-heel turn down the line where he backstabs Su, forcing Mika to become a PC, and then simps for Oros. Or whatever convoluted, minimal-effort shock-value plot points that spur a post into action later on.

Anyhow, I personally think it's overtuned to cause physical damage twice (especially because it's essentially unavoidable after the fact), but the conditions are whacky enough that maybe it's ok. In the case of physical damage in particular, it's very much a sink or swim thing, considering how physical damage is the one that's least affected by ranks...which means that it's either useful (magi, esper) or useless (monsters).

That is to say that it's fine if Broken thinks it is.

Yeah, that's pretty much my reasoning for submitting it as-is. I imagine there'll be enough monsters to deal with that it won't be effective on a majority of encounters. Or at least not on the majority of foes, especially since there's always the chance a particular Esper decided to become THE WALL.

I was originally thinking of stealing ranks of defense instead but that doesn't sound quite as aggressive for an instrument special.
@FamishedPants "damage akin to a physical E-grade note?" I take it you mean a damage note cast at E-grade, but it does physical damage?

If that's the case, I think that's a'ight. Go see what uncle Erode thinks.

Yeah I did word that one a bit weirdly, but you got it right. I changed the wording to hopefully be better in that regard and now I wait for@ERode
Let me know how you feel about this one.

"I am once again asking for your arcane support."

— Sam

Although he was without usable hands for the moment, Samuel wasn't completely helpless. That was why he was willing to forgo the healing Ashley could provide, even if he'd really love to be able to use his instruments.

But no matter.

Ultimately, despite appearances, Samuel was more capable at a range than close-range, and against Espers, he couldn't rely on his terrifying presence to do all the heavy lifting, like he could with those thugs in the prison. Let alone a ghost or a vampire or whatever other abomination wanted to announce its presence next.

The trick was to be patient while he remained invisible. Even if some of those Freelancers knew where he was, his goal wasn't to remove himself from the fight in their eyes but to make it significantly more difficult to react to what he was about to do. But it was as he was gathering mana to cast a melody that the ghost had chosen to third party them. Hella cringe ngl

For the majority of the ghost-fight, Samuel's attention was occupied by a living suit of armor that had animated nearby. In all honesty, he wasn't entirely sure if it could see him while he was hidden within his shadow, but he didn't want to assume he was safe and then be cut down because of that, so instead, he went on the offensive. The sword tucked into his armpit... wouldn't visually change because it was invisible presently, but mana nonetheless did pour into and through it. A sudden blast of darkness swept upwards in a roughly diagonal line from the bottom to the top of the suit, lacking the typical precision Sam was known for. But it wasn't exactly easy to aim with your armpits.

With that suit of armor taken care of, Samuel intended on preparing another melody to assist his teammates, but an explosion, the ghost's departure, and the sudden appearance of Billy Black, Binky, and his waifu The Fritz Dr. Moller all happened rather quickly in succession.

Binky's condition drew his attention more than anything and considering her worried voice, the same could be said of the new recruit. He imagined that the battle must have been ferocious, but her expression said anything but 'I was victorious' and Samuel had reached the conclusion that Justin escaped long before it was ever said aloud.

A failure here, when we were so close! How could this happen? Probably because we stumbled on the forgettable before even approaching the actual target! No, 'stumbled' is being too generous. We tripped and fell and only barely managed to stand back up! If I was better... if things had concluded quicker, then he wouldn't've had time to flee!

His crimson eyes took to Billy, who was likewise showing signs of wear from the battle. Samuel removed himself from the shadow he had created and once again approached Ashley, although his eyes never quite left Billy. His everlasting smile heavily contrasted the bit of bloodlust he was feeling at that moment.

Then at the very least...!

Things had gone so very wrong ever since they stepped foot in this mansion. Something was compelling him to attack this monster before them. Was it the sheer humiliation of being spared by the corrupted nun? Was it the sorrowful determination to properly avenge the life of the kid and those innocents they could not save? Or was it simply a cold, business-like opportunist in him that saw the chance to strike a crippling blow to Maverick?

It was hard to tell, but either way, Samuel was behind Fritzi's proposition before she even uttered it. Of course, as a respectable member of G.E.M.I.N.I, Samuel would loyally follow just about any order Fritzi gave regardless. But now it wasn't just loyalty driving him.

"...Apologies for earlier. Didn't want to be a burden in that melee. If the offer still stands, my hands are still worse for wear." He said to Ashley, watching the Freelancers begin to abandon Billy...

...and reinforce his stance on Freelancers. Yet, even so, he was a bit relieved to see a few of them leave.

...because they would only complicate things.

At least, that's what he told himself.

"I'm out of hands but not out of options!"

— Sam

A battered, burnt, and breathless Samuel used what he figured were his last moments to defiantly gaze into the eyes of his foe. The pitiful human he returned to was able to express the disappointment at the result of this fight, but no fear.

I haven't accomplished enough yet... if only I were stronger...!

But Lenore's attack never came. Instead, Arzendale's demise caused the nun's mad enhancements to dissolve and with it her desire to kill him, apparently. With a few parting words, she left while Samuel was still speechless from surprise and confusion.

Samuel snapped out of his daze when not long after, grunting in pain as he scoured his immediate area for his mask. He cast a glance over the edge of the pillar and though he couldn't see much, he gathered that the fighting had ceased. It appeared they had come out victorious, but it was certainly not without cost.

...

...

...

When Silhouette was able to regroup with his team, he approached them massaging his wrists. This was the only outward indication he had even been subject to any discomfort aside from labored breathing, but the fact was he was having trouble not repeatedly and vividly recalling the pain of losing his hands moments ago.

Managing to put on a convincing and purely figurative mask, he glanced around at the rest of the G.E.M.I.N.I agents and only just avoided frowning as his eyes moved over the corpses of the sacrifices.

We managed to avoid losing any agents so ultimately this mission is a success so far, despite the hardship and deaths. Still...

'Little Sammy', huh?

I certainly don't feel victorious.

Binky's voice drew Samuel's attention, but he wasn't surprised in the least she was ready to get things done with. They couldn't waste time worrying about how bad that fight could have gotten or who they could save. "I suffered a lot of damage in that fight but I still have a fair amount of mana to provide," he said in direct response to Binky's calling that those who couldn't fight should leave. "...provided that someone can spare a beneficial note or two."

Samuel may not have expressed it quite as well as someone like Jacqueline could, but he was just as likely as her to call it quits. He was driven by not by righteousness or empathy, but purely dedication to his duty as a G.E.M.I.N.I agent.

...yes, it would set a bad example for our new blood were I to flee when I might conceivably assist still.

It was also quite conceivable his presence could be a detriment, but he chose to ignore that potential, and the group made their way further into the mansion, and towards Justin.

...

...

...

All the clothes in the world aren't going to keep him safe from us.

The G.E.M.I.N.I demon was being diligent despite his pain and keeping his eyes open for any more ambushes -- another nun like that getting close would surely result in his death -- but it was impossible not to observe the sheer fascination this vampire seemed to have with clothes. Samuel understood fashion to a small extent because appearances are quite important in a business, but nothing could prepare him for Justin.

Literally.

I wish I could say that is the most disturbing piece of 'art' I've had the displeasure of witnessing...

Though every fiber of his being screamed out in unison to do so, the transformed Silhouette didn't roll his eyes. It also helped that the unmistakable form of Billy Black, a known terrorist, was present in the room.

The entire exchange between Binky and Black was tense. As an upstanding member of G.E.M.I.N.I, Samuel would not hesitate to remove the head of the snake that was Maverick, but it appeared as though the two heavyweights in the room agreed that Justin must take priority.

...that was why it was a little offputting that Binky left them to fight what Samuel interpreted as some mixture of Maverick 'agents' and some Freelancers, a couple of whom Samuel couldn't mistake as having participated with them at the precinct. Unlike Su Fang, Samuel Howard had fought alongside them and it was hard to mistake both Klava and Apollo as they didn't exactly look inconspicuous. Of course, neither did he.

This situation is exactly why I would prefer not to mingle with their types, even if their results can be spectacular. You never know when they'll end up on the opposing team...

Samuel cursed the circumstances but was ultimately not emotionally invested in either of the two Freelancers he recognized aside from respect for their capabilities, something they likely both would prefer he didn't have as it would lessen the chance he may underestimate them.

Strangely enough, his eyes came at a complete halt on one member he didn't recognize. Or, well, he didn't think he did? But she still felt familiar, a little bit. That was really odd considering he specifically avoided associating himself with clowns and the like where possible.

Where possible.

For some reason, Samuel felt the need to reiterate that in his head. But much like the familiarity with the jester, he wasn't sure why.

Well, it must be nothing. I don't meet enough cute clowns to have the ability to forget them. And it's really for the best if I don't know them, I think.

That was because he offered no objection towards Breacher's decision and, lacking the hands necessary to signal back to Orion (he wasn't even able to wield his instruments in a way he could fight with them, deciding to carry them tucked into his armpits) he replied with a nod to her inquirey as the attack started.

While both Breacher and Valkyrie went on the offensive, Klava initiated her assault, but thankfully he wasn't a target. It would be a lie to say he didn't desire to focus her down right now and limit the damange she could cause, but even with a numbers advantage, they couldn't afford to neglect everyone for a single Esper.

Plus it was inadvisable to engage in melee combat when you didn't have hands to hold your instruments and severe burns all over your magical body. He chose, instead, to do something else.

Thinking about what he should do, he knew he required some setup to make the most out of his contributions to this battle, and thus, he spent most of the time allotted to him darting downwards and taking a position beside the armoire, and self-casting a melody that enveloped his person in a shadowy embrace which masked his presence from both eyesight and earshot.

I legitimately forgot I even had Black Desert.

*Groans of increasing discomfort*

— Sam

It seemed he had been incorrect in his assumption that a simple projectile would be better than a telegraphed spawn or beam for the quick-moving foe he was dealing with, though this was due to friendly interference. If he knew he was going to be denied line-of-sight things might be different. But this fight had not been one that allowed Silhouette to go long before requiring action and his lament at an unfortunate outcome for yet another one of his spells was put on hold for the time being. He had an ally to protect, after all.

Deftly his blades soared through the air as cut the orbs that Arzendale had sent after Valkyrie. His waltz of blades was executed perfectly and none of the orbs made it through in one piece, ceasing their momentum and floating in the air.

Ah, as expected. Try to remain calm, Sam.

Sometimes, a person did not have enough options to avoid even an obvious trick like this one. He had no constructs to rely upon to block the attack, and the alternative was to allow Valkyrie to succumb to the flames instead. Perhaps someone better suited to this sort of role should have taken his place, but that didn't change the fact he was the one caught in the radius of the orbs right now.

In an eruption of cursed, twisted flames, Samuel's body ignited and his world burst into suffering. He had prepared himself for intense pain but no amount of that could negate the sheer overwhelming agony being caught ablaze inflicted on an individual and he let out a hellish growl, nearly losing his footing as he struggled to keep his coherence through it.

Friendlyfirefriendlyfirefriendlyfire! Edgeedgeedge! Fallfallfall!

He wasn't entirely successful, as the flames provided too much stimulation for him to properly think, though he kept his focus through repeating keywords in his mind frantically. There was far too much to take in for him to even register that Valkyrie had attempted to instruct him over comms, though this wasn't detrimental as he had already intended on doing exactly that. As far as putting out a fire goes, Samuel didn't really have many options on hand besides potentially that. He was prepared to throw himself off their perch if there was no other way to avoid catching Valkyrie in the blaze, though he hoped it wouldn't come to that.

Still repeating those words in his head, Samuel got as far as he could away from Valkyrie while on the pillar before becoming intangible, his concentration (or what there really was of it) was entirely devoted to the sort of mantra he had created, namely ensuring that he did not fall off the pillar as well as not accidentally cause himself to fall through it during his intangibility, since he would naturally move away from the fire so that he wouldn't just reignite the second his melody ended.

"If at first, you don't succeed..."

— Sam

The G.E.M.I.N.I agents surely could not say they were the owners of the momentum for this fight, but with Su's assistance, Samuel managed to avoid burning alive, and they now had new structures to work with. With Orion MIA and Jacqueline separated from the group, their immediate goal was to regroup with their overextended agent while avoiding any more dire situations like succumbing to oil and fire.

Unfortunately, before they could do that, Arzendale went ahead and executed more hostages. One of them even happened to be a small child, a fact that merely served to remind Samuel he would be mistaken if he treated these beings as people instead of monsters.

Oh... little one... you deserved so much better than this. I apologize that the best that we can do is avenge you.

Maybe rushing in wasn't the smartest decision, but it couldn't be taken back now. And no matter what Arzendale said, it was ultimately him who decided to kill those people. Samuel wouldn't lose his composure over the losses, but he would treat the deaths of these three monsters as his apology to the child.

As much as he wanted to follow Breacher and Wukong, he couldn't imagine the nun not taking the chance to get close to Valkyrie. It was impossible to tell if she could simply Blink, so he wasn't going to risk anything here. And Breacher must have been thinking the same thing, as she mentioned as much before she lept off the rails and began her charge towards the monsters.

Silhouette would leave direct backup to agent Wukong here, but he couldn't do anything about the projectiles going after her. He simply wasn't suited for this kind of role, even if he had every intention of playing it. Well, that was no excuse to do nothing. The nun would likely be trying something soon. Making sure she hadn't already, he went ahead and decided to attack her.

His inhuman fingers came together in an instant, and channeling his mana through his sword, he fired a dark bolt that transformed during its flight into an enlarged replica of his demonic hand, attempting to seize the nun yet again.
