Moonlight streamed through the open window and a gentle breezed pushed its way into the makeshift lab. A young man, who seemed to be in his mid to late teens, slowly began to wake. Eye lids opened and new hazel eyes explored the ceiling above him. Slowly the being sat up, messy black hair ruffled and he could hair strange sounds. Slender fingers gripped the fabric underneath his body and he pushed himself up as he could now see more items around him. All of this was new, he had very little knowledge and by this point it wasn’t clear if he could even speak.

Chirp, chirp, chirp… it was the foreign sound again. So soft and soothing to most but to this being it was amazing and actually alarming since he didn’t understand it. His legs were strong enough to help his body up and slowly he began to the window. Small blue things sang on the branch nearby and gears worked as muscles as his arm extended out, curious fingers reaching out to touched the creatures when they suddenly went into the air and flew away! The being gasped softly and he stumbled back as his mind began to process. “Birds … flew away.” What little data he did have would began to expand and access as he did experience things. The strange being had no real way of understanding the world and he did need someone to help him. The data he did have was basic, small things that a child would learn before entering the school system. That was, if there still was one.

The human race had grown too big that it killed itself. Now the human were in low numbers, many returning to times of tribes and much simpler times with aids from future’s success as solar power and computer chips that were more than able to collect data and even mimic the human mind if one knew how to program it correctly. It was rare now a day. Many humans returned to farming and focusing on just keeping alive.

The boy looked out the window again like a curious child. He saw large buildings, many in decay but still standing. Nature had returned and claimed its home. Ivy and weeds began to overtake buildings and broke up the cemented ground. Humans were nowhere in sight. At least not to him.

His laboratory was an old wine cellar, but it worked better than anywhere else he could have used. Even as an inventor, his skills were a bit useless with humanity's current issues. The android trade was a luxurious one, and was more of a lost art than anything. It took months, or years at a time. Real inventors called their workspaces workshops. At least, that's what he had always thought.

Blake's father had taught him the trade himself. It was a dying art, and the young man knew that. That was before Blake had to live by himself, because the riots in the cities were that bad. Some of the more densely populated cities had the military there to control activists. It was, they said, the government's fault for everything. It was their fault humans were going to all die.

He had just finished. In the past, Blake had only ever constructed small doll-like robots, or ones that acted like animals. He had never tried to make a humanoid android before. But recently, it had been too much. He didn't want to be alone. The sepia world around him kept moving, but he felt dead. Every day was the same. Get water from the well when he was thirsty, lounge in bed or listen to the radio.

Until he arrived in the county, he had never even known what a well was. Luckily, the seventeen-year-old was a fast learner. The wine cellar wasn't completely underground. The part that was his workshop was on ground level, though there were stairs that descended down that lead to the electric circuit. The teen had to turn the circuit on in order to trigger the energy source he had implanted in his creation. The electric current would go from the table into the robot, turning him on.

After what seemed like a few minutes, the boy turned the power back off, knowing the android would have more than enough with his active battery. As he finally made his way to the top of the stairs, he got a good look at his creation, and even though he had looked human before, seeing him move around was phenomenal. He thanked his good fortune that he had kept all the books of the trade his Father had given to him.

Now, what should he do now? Blake had hair in several shades of chocolatey brown, and his dark brown eyes glittered with excitement as a wide smile spread across his face. He felt so much pride that he had made this robot. Fair skin, a boyish smile, and near trimmed mocha hair led to the inventor being quite the looker. If the works he had read were any proof, interaction with a K21 memory chip was vital. Treat him as normally as possible, otherwise he'll inherit bad behaviors.

The robot was looking out the window when he first came along. "Like what you see? The stone architecture is nice, isn't it?" Then, kicking himself for being so dull added, "I'm Blake! I'm going to teach you everything you need to know... okay?"

With fresh eyes, it actually looked beautiful to see the plants over take the building and how the blue moon returned to have the added effect that he was in some kind of paradise. Then he heard words, he turned to the new figure. The was a strange being to the robot and he slowly made his way over, stopping in front of him "Ar-ch-it-ecture?" everything had flew over the poor boy's head, But that word seemed to interest him a lot "Bl-ake?" he repeated Blake's name and his lips formed a soft smile. Walking over, he reached up and his fingers brushed against the other' cheek. This really was new to him and he just wanted to know everything he could.

"Teach me?" The young man nod and pointed out the window "Arch-it-ecture. Is there more?"

Blake didn't know what to expect when the android made its way to him. His movements were a little klunky, but smoother than he could have ever thought possible for something he had build with his own hands. True, he had improvised and bought some parts, but no one expect for his books helped him assemble the robot. So as the robot spoke simply to him, he couldn't help the blossoming feeling of pride from spreading through him, a wide grin starting to form.

It felt so, so, so good to hear someone else's voice, even though it belonged to someone who had died decades ago. That was how android were given their voices- from voice samples collected from people, and then manufactured after that person had died. The voice base of a single person could be edited to produce hundreds of distinctive voices. Celebrity voice bases could sell for a lot, or they used to, at least. He wasn't really sure of the details on how the technology worked, exactly.

"Yeah, there's tons more!" Blake responded enthusiastically. So what if the other boys body was made of gears and wires and poly synthetic imitation substances? Even if he wasn't human, he wouldn't have to be alone! At least, not in the traditional sense! And in this day and age, it was cheaper to craft a companion than to buy a cat or dog or even a fish. Actually, the fish might be an equivalent price.

Taking the other's hand from his cheek, he smiled slowly and led him to the window. "Okay, see that?" He asked, pointing to an ivy-grown stone building, "That's a house. It's where people live. We're in one right now." He informed happily, though his tone was laced with caution. When he was younger, he had once asked a robot if it was hungry. It said no, but Blake would never forget the look that had manifested in the other's eyes.

The boy smiled and followed without question. Looking out the window he stared out and he looked excited "So pretty!" he stated as he moved closer and studied the building "H-ouse?" he asked trying to get use to the word and trying to connect it to the place in front of them. "How do we get in here?" he asked innocently enough. Turning his attention to the man beside him, the android smiled sweetly "Blake." he said softly as he got onto his tippy-toes "Can we explore?" he asked as he pointed back to the home. He hoped that his message would come by easily.

The android knew nothing of his existence. He just woke up and found himself in a room. In a place where he was born and where he took his first big steps with no one to witness them or the first of many words he would state.

"So pretty..." his eye lids half closed and a dreamy smile came to his painted lips. It just happened without any thought and he never notice it.

A smile played across his lips. He had been to that house before, and not to explore. Unfortunately, when he finally got the nerve to grab a mildew-covered pillowcase and a crowbar, he found someone had already taken all the edible resources and working batteries. Luckily, whoever lived in the home before seemed to be an artist or a painter, because Blake was able to salvage crush paints and touch brushes, most likely deemed worthless in the famine-filled world.

Because of the ugliness everyone outside the cities had to face every day, it was no wonder most of them had lost interest in beautiful things. Not him, though. He may have lived in their shambles and ruins, but he was no peasant. He was in hiding. In order to convince himself of this, he said it every night after securing the bars.

Unfortunately, they couldn't explore now because of the barb wire barrier Blake had, with great difficulty, set all around the perimeter of his bungalow. Quickly, he slowly shook his head. "It's late, if we explore, it's going to be in the daytime." He murmured softly, "And you don't want to go in there, anyways. Let's just stay in the house, alright?"

Not wanting t make his new companion sad, he quickly added, "There are a lot of things to do in the house, anyways. Follow, okay?" Blake said before squeezing the other's shoulder (it felt like soft human skin) and dashing up the stairs like an excited child.

The human-like machine turned his attention to Blake when he said they wouldn't go that night because of something called daytime. Nodding, the machine looked back out and a small amount of a new emotion hit him. It was like his stomach was being turned and his lips began to droop slightly, he didn't feel as happy as before but that quickly changed when he heard they could explore this home.

"More?" he asked softly as he watched Blake squeeze his shoulder. The other's hand was warm and slowly the newborn covered Blake's hand with his own which. The human's skin felt different from the walls, softer and warm.

"Okay, I'll follow Blake!" the machine smiled as he took Blake's hand. His mind went to work to put together more information. This seemed to be the correct body language, one was to hold another's hand when it was to follow. "Blake, whats daytime like?"
