when you're isolated/depressed/inactive you tend to get a skewed view of yourself, which includes seeing yourself as singular in certain areas...like uniquely smart or capable/incapable, like you or your thoughts/issues are incomprehensible to people, and the more you stay isolated the more you focus on yourself to the detriment of the world around you. So that may explain it.
