I've never seen an actual horror game that hasn't just went jumpscare crazy. I feel like the only thing other than jumpscares (that i've seen) is horrifying character imagery/personalities.
Jumpscares can't make you scared by it self.
It requires tension.
Build up.
Otherwise it's just something popping up.
Nothing is scarier.
As in having buildup, getting tension, expecting something...
And nothing happens. It makes you feel uneasy.
