Why is it private? Why do we have a group, not a page, where a page would be much more helpful because we'd be able to follow it without being "members" of it?

I have zero interest in associating my personal Facebook account with my RPguild account, so I haven't joined the group. Because of this, I have missed information and updates. I know others are in the same boat. Can we fix this?

It's totally member-driven. I have no part in it.

Apparently it's private because there's a FB-User<->Guild-User lookup table in it. And FB forces you to either make everything private or everything public.

A page would be a good idea. I'd create one if I was guaranteed it wouldn't spam my personal timeline.

It won't. I admin a couple facebook pages; they're basically separate "users" for the purposes of Facebook administration. You'll be able to switch between viewing things as the page and viewing things as yourself.

I'll create one and differentiate between the group and page in the header.

It seems like the distinction is that a group is for mixing with the community personally, and a page is purely for following/interacting with the product's brand/identity itself.

Is there any chance that the site would be reliably featured on anything easily-findable besides Facebook? Haven't made an account there due to disagreement with the site's management's unethical activities, never going to make an account there. (I'll note that Oldtower never came up in any of the major search engines, and I was therefore unaware of the site's fate until quite some time after the notice of the vBulletin-powered RPG's demise was posted.)
