It could be said that the start of something occurred when they took a look at the examination. Much like State Alchemist needed to have an evaluation every so often; students had to take an examination at the beginning, middle, and end of their school year at the academy…though the first year was the only one that didn’t disqualify students for bad beginning/opening exam scores, which were more or less in place to have some sort of grasp of the student alchemist involved.

Classes tended to thin out by the end of the third year, with the students that remained actually know their stuff. After a minimum of five years of attendance, the students would be selected based on exam and practical scores in order to take the actual new State Alchemist evaluation, either failing and going back to their studies till they get selected again, or succeeding and becoming a State Alchemist.

Some would question the validity of having prospective State Alchemist attend an academy; would the generations of alchemist hold the same values of the pre-event generation? This would be countered with the argument that, though the pre-event generation yielded the only alchemist in history to successfully bring back a human using human transmutation, a good number of the alchemists working for the military became corrupt. The academy here was, not only to sharpen the skills of the alchemists, but to also teach the ethics that could be so easily forgotten on the pursuit of knowledge.

But, forget about all that…this all started when they all gather ‘round to see how well they did at the beginning exam. A certain short Ishvalan boy into his second year was pleased to find himself just in the top 50, a particular day dreamer looked up at her top 10 score…the older teen girl with automail to her direct right was sweating bullets at how bad she did. Brushing her hand nervously through some pink hair, "These first timer exams didn't matter, r-right?"

There was nothing quite like attending a school where everyone was working towards the same goal. It gave everyone a sense of community, of camaraderie, and it helped develop friendships that would last well after graduation. At least that's what the proctors had told everyone during the introduction ceremony; they would become allies-in-arms, brothers and enjoy a sense of belonging unlike anywhere else. That sounded fine and all but this was a place of higher learning, not some summer camp where everyone could sing along and play games. For some that message fell a bit short, seeming almost artificial and cheesy. Though they spoke of everyone becoming friends there was an air of competition about the academy. Indeed, the entire atmosphere of the State Alchemist Academy was unlike any other school around; the push to succeed and improve oneself was almost suffocating. Anyone could become an Alchemist if one so chose to but it still took a lot of work, especially if you wanted a higher position.

In spite of the uncertainty surrounding the establishing of such a school, Central had gone ahead with its plans and built the Academy anyways. There it sat high atop a hill in the Eastern district of the city, sprawling across a sizable plot of land and overlooking a high-class residential district below. The buildings surrounding the Academy lent an air of prestige and wealth to it, though one didn't necessarily need the most finances to attend. Yes it was a private school but it was also to train military personnel, so anyone who wished to join could. As a result people from all walks of life entered the halls during the inaugural ceremony this year; rich and poor, those from the country and those from the city; foreigners and local names alike, it took all kinds to make up the class. After brief introductions to the faculty were given the prospective students were thrown to the proverbial wolves and assigned their first test; a placement test in order to determine where in the class they fit academically as well as who might be selected for the student governing body.

Students who scored particularly high, generally the top 50, had the opportunity to become part of the student body if they so chose. Seats were limited and interviews with the faculty had to be done, and even then there wasn't a guarantee you could get in. For some the chance to gain a position of power right away was too much to pass up, and many went right into the offices following the exams to await their chance at grabbing a spot. Not every student who scored highly desired any sort of prominence, nor did they want to make a fuss over their achievements. Aldis was one such student who really could not be bothered to chase after any extra opportunities, they sounded like too much work. Instead he was just one amongst the crowd currently gathered at a series of cork boards, scanning over the names to try and find where he had fell. Starting from the top he went down the list, and after finding his name within the top 10 he broke into a small smirk, folding his hands into his pockets casually as he chuckled. And he was scolded for blowing off studying, so much for that being an issue.

Relaxed as he might be about the exams it couldn't be said everyone shared his viewpoint. For some it was essentially do or die, which was silly seeing as you got in even if your tests were poor. The only difference was what your potential rank might be upon completion of the Academy, and therein the jobs that might be available to you. A girl not far off to the side sounded pretty concerned with how she had done, and without knowing her name it was impossible for Aldis to check her score. Looking over at the pink-haired girl he smiled amused, shrugging his shoulders as his eyes went back up to the board. "Sure, as long as you don't care what you end up doing for the rest of your life," he replied, his eyes swiveling to the corners to gauge the girl's reaction. "I'm kidding, before you freak out. It's a placement test, no use in getting all bent out of shape over it." Oh boy, she was going to have a tough time of things if just the placement test got her panties in a bunch. She wasn't alone though, all around him he could hear uneasy murmurs and sounds of sorrow as students realized maybe they ought to have done a little better. Aldis could only roll his eyes at their woes, it was so silly to get worked up on day one.

The young woman's face turned as pink as her hair, whether or not it was anger or embarrassment, she had an angry look about her as she pointed into the face of the person standing before her, "You~! And how well did you do?!" Just because some written work told her she wasn't too great with alchemy, that didn't mean she couldn't do actual work with her hands. Heck, Fern worked with her father and brothers since she was five, she could do needle work better than anybody in this hall! As the pinkette fumed, with her finger practically chest-poking at this point, the brunette Jane walked on over to one of the peoples she recognized as supervisor to her examination. Smiling, she inquired about the possibility of getting to get her paper back to bring home...and seemed to accept that she couldn't keep it, though it seemed that she could have it back at this moment so long as she returned it. If one would have leaned over to peek, at a glance they could have seen a whole lot of drawn circles on Jane’s paper…but that’s not exactly incorrect. The page was absolutely saturated in in multiple different alchemic circles of both practical and theoretical natures, linked to one another by their specific designs and symbols…and written in pencil, in the spaces unoccupied by the ink drawn/written circles, were the word ‘magic’. Moor seemed close enough to pick up on the girl asking for her paper earlier, and quickly asked for his own examination back, taking out his old textbook to write notes into the margarines…as well as cross out a personal note or two. Sometimes understanding of the use and formula were wrong, and it only served well to take note and correct it while the mistake it still fresh in mind, for future reference. Looking over, he noticed that the blonde teen was taking some form of abuse from the pink haired lady…but was too timid to say anything.

There were plenty of things to get upset about while at the Academy; being dropped from a class, being dumped by a crush; losing your books, these were all things that could make your time her right miserable. Doing poorly on a placement test was not one of those things however, and getting worried over it was just unnecessary. Aldis had to dismiss the pink-haired girl's fit over her scores for that very reason, he couldn't see why anyone would be so concerned. It probably helped his own case that he had done fairly well on the test itself. Noticing a finger being shoved in his face he turned to look at Fern confused, smiling in spite of being glowered at. "Me...? Oh I suppose I did pretty well," Aldis replied, glancing back over at the board as he scratched his head, "Looks like I'm number 8 in the class. Kind of surprising since I'm pretty sure I fell asleep partway through it." If he recalled right the information on the exam had been rudimentary at best, meaning anyone with a basic understanding of alchemy should do fine on it. Shrugging his shoulders he looked to Fern furiously, folding his hands into his pant pockets. "Maybe you just didn't study hard enough? Should put in more time if you want to do well!" That in of itself was about as simple as it got; studying and practicing was the only way any of them would learn the material. Even the top 10, himself included didn't know everything, they had to read and take notes like anyone else. Really now, why was Fern so angry with him? He was trying to help by telling her it was nothing to worry about and instead she was mad at him for so much as speaking. Certainly a fiery girl, he'd have to be careful not to say the wrong thing, lest he get knocked around a bit for it. Feeling another set of eyes trained on him Aldis ventured a guess at who was watching and found an Ishvalan boy looking on at the scene at hand. What was he so curious about? Smiling politely in his direction Aldis walked right by Fern, ignoring the finger that had been in his face as he approached the other boy. "Hey there! How's it going?" he asked, grinning as he leaned over slightly an extended a hand, "Nice to meet ya! Name's Aldis, and what's the name of the guy staring at me?"

The pink haired Fern was stomping mad, some damage was accumulating on the floor as she shook her fist at the blonde guy. Hmph, acting like he was better than her, looking like a typical slacker. Nearby, Jane was folding her exam paper up and into the shape of a crown, much to the supervisor's visible dismay. And the certain Ishvalan boy... Internally feeling just too guilty at being nothing but a bystander...he froze up immediately, when the attention was redirected to him by the victim. The attention...it was making the bandaged part of his head itch. Flinching back at the hand, eyes darting from hand to face to hand suspiciously, before he inclined his head carefully and answered rather stiffly, "Likewise, then, Aldis...I am Moor."

That girl really was a handful, and she had one hell of a temper too! How did someone like that get into the Academy? Sheesh, and she was going to get a firearm at some point or another too, probably best to avoid even looking her way. Aldis may well have continued talking to Fern and dug himself deeper into a pit had he not caught sight of another boy looking at him. He was slightly surprised for a moment that it was an Ishavalan no less; rarely did you see an Ishvalan in a place like the Academy. While it was true peace had been brokered between them and the Amestrians, but that hardly made them equal in all regards. Slums and low income housing were the norm for Ishvalans, at least in the major Amestrian cities. Some Ishvalan cities had sprouted up here and there, and the locals could be quite well off. In mixed company however it was still normal for people to look down on their former enemies. Aldis was scarcely one to care for ancient history, and he certainly wasn't going to dislike someone for something another person had done. If he thought like that then he'd hate his own neighbors, family, and classmates just because Central had been run by some nasty people before. Walking over to greet the other boy the blond smiled kindly, extending a hand for him to take. He got a response, a pressured one at that, and he was left hanging with the handshake. Smiling awkwardly then Aldis withdrew his hand, chuckling as he rubbed the back of his head. "Moor huh? Nice to meet you! Glad to see we'll be in classes together!" he said, pausing before putting a finger to his chin, "Though maybe we won't be... I don't know how they're separating them. By score? Age? Maybe different classes altogether?" He continued on for a brief moment, mumbling under his breath as his brow furrowed and he stared at the floor. "Ah who cares! We'll be on the same campus so that's fine!" Aldis suddenly said, smiling again at Moor. He was really quiet, wasn't he? So he was shy, bummer, probably meant they wouldn't do a whole lot of talking. No problem, they could still get along just fine! "That's a lot of bandages..." the blond remarked, tilting his head as he noted the wrappings and bandages on the Ishvalan boy. It didn't look serious, just some small bits here and there. He was about to ask what had happened when he overheard one of the proctors trying to discipline a student, raising an eyebrow as he turned his head to check out what was going on. Looked like some girl had put her paper on her head, and in a military-based Academy that wasn't exactly normal behavior. Kind of funny though, it made Aldis chuckle and break out into a grin. Unable to help himself he waltzed over, standing behind the girl while beaming up at the teacher. "Can't you tell this is the Princess? Obviously she should get better treatment than this!" he said, looking at the girl and winking playfully, "A bit short for a Princess though. What are you, 10?"

Jane's mouth curled into a smile, before she placed the paper crown atop her head, and setting her hands on her hips. Speaking with her soft toned voice, "Of course I am the princess...! Tell me, be you knight or prince?" Pausing for a thoughtful moment at the other comment, "...I wish I were still ten, maybe then I could surpass Edward Elric's precedent." Edward Elric...the most famous alchemist in the country, nay, world. The only one to successfully transmute a human using alchemy. The teacher merely shook their head before plucking the crown from the girl's head and stacking them with the rest. "Oh." Avoiding eye contact, wringing his hands together rather nervously as he chewed his bottom lip, Moor returned his paper before leaving for the library. Of course, it wasn't the one restricted only to the State Alchemist, rather a new one formed a while back for prospectives. The bookshelves were occupied by beginner to advanced guides in different fields of alchemy. Books on human transmutation were disallowed, though mentions of it were usually for lessons of ethics. Human transmutation was deeply rooted in many studies, and thus, it couldn't just be removed without consequences. Pulling books out of shelves, having to tiptoe and really reach for a high shelf one, Moor held his stack and textbook and looked for his usual seat by the window.
