Purity

What would you sacrifice to save the world?

Setting

A refuge houses several dozen people in the middle of Stony Ridge, New York - a town otherwise abandoned to the walkers. The place was Redman's Tavern, which was Stony Ridge's main attraction, before. It was a large, spacious area - if a bit overcrowded. Nevertheless, you are more comfortable there than you have been in the past year - ever since the dead wouldn't stay dead. It was heavily fortified, keeping out any walkers that tried getting close. For the most part, you try and keep your head down and not make a scene. Maybe, with luck, you can just ride the apocalypse out here.

Until one day, when an SUV rolls up to the refuge. Walkers are hot on its' trail, but the driver spots the lookouts on top of the tavern and gets out. He is an older man, accompanied by a woman of similar age. She is holding something large, maybe the last of her belongings. The couple run up to the gate, begging to be let in. You spot the ordeal from the window. Normally, your people would hesitate on letting the strangers in, but something was different. These two were wearing lab coats. The gatekeeper opens the doors quickly, and the couple dash inside as walkers curiously probe the SUV.

Everyone gathers around the couple, and stares at them in shock. The woman was not carrying her belongings. She was carrying a child. A plump, healthy looking boy of around 3 years of age is dropped roughly by the woman.

The elderly couple are out of breath, unable to speak and obviously scared witless. You exchange a glance with the others. Is this a joke? What's going on?

"We... were testing..." the man begins. You shift uncomfortably.

"Testing...?" Someone asks, warily.

"Blood." The woman offers. You frown. "Our team was taking blood samples in the City. Looking for... the thing that has infected us all."

"We found... him." The man gestures to the boy.

"Is he infected?" Someone calls out. The couple immediately shake their heads.

"No. He is immune." A tense silence hung in the air. "He is not a carrier. In his blood lies the cure for this outbreak."

The boy begins to cry. The male doctor kneels quickly to comfort him. It is clear that he has a lot of experience with kids. The man tries his best to comfort the kid, but nothing seems to work. The child only cries harder.

"My name is Beverly Foster," the woman announces over the boy's wails. "I am a scientist with the United States government. For the past year, we've been looking for a cure to this madness, and we've finally found it. The military was going to escort us to safety... but they were overrun." Beverly hangs her head. "There is an active military base in South Carolina. Shaw Air Force Base. If you take us there, not only will you be protected by the military, but you will help us end this plague. Who will help us?"

Character

Your character, however incredulous of this supposed cure, believes that trying to reach the military is the best course of action. They agree to join the scientists in the long trek from New York to South Carolina. You can create multiple characters, but expect this roleplay to be similar in lethality as the comics or TV show. That is, your characters can and probably will die. If that happens, you can create a new character(s) that finds the group and joins them. It's possible that by the end, the group that reaches Shaw Air Force Base will be completely different than the group that left Stony Ridge.

Name:
Sex:
Age: (16 is the minimum age, there is no maximum age. You can create a character under 16, if accompanied by an adult character of yours)
Appearance (Description is fine, or realistic picture if you prefer):
Skills: What you are exceptionally skilled at. Could be zombie fighting-related, could be applying makeup. Any skill is ok.
Personality: A brief description on what kind of person you are.
Flaws: Include at least two notable flaws your character has. Mental, physical, etc.
History (Pre-outbreak): A bio on what you were or what you did before the end of the world.
History (Post-outbreak): Bio on how your character survived in the zombie infested world, and how they settled in a fortified tavern in a small New York town. Were they there all along, with no experience in the "real" new world? Or did they have a group, and settled as recently as yesterday?

The Roleplay

I want this to be high-casual. The posts don't need to be a certain length, as I value quality over quantity. That being said, character development will be everything to this roleplay. I expect your characters to be realistic, with flaws and weaknesses, and I would like to see them grow over the course of the RP.

Otherwise, standard rules apply. I don't think I need to list them out here. Combat will be decided mainly on the situation and how you respond. You can deal with most combat on your own (start and end a fight with walkers), but if I think you're in a situation where you cannot possibly win, I will intervene and cause harm to your character.

Very rarely, I will roll dice for characters in trouble to see whether or not they live or die, to keep the atmosphere of character death alive.

The roleplay will focus on the theme of morality. We'll be making many difficult decisions as a group, and the scientists that are escorting the child are much more than they appear. There will be no right or wrong in this roleplay, only what you decide is the best course of action.

Um, not quite yet. Read the sample character sheets of Dr Foster and Wong, those provide a good template of what I expect from a character sheet.

ROBERT GILLES

Sex: Male
Age: 38
Skills: Science, chemistry, shooting with a revolver.
Personality: Calm, collected. Proceeds with logic and good sense.
Flaws: Nearsighted ; Prone to illness
History (Pre-outbreak): Robert was a chemist before the outbreak. Originally from the UK, he moved to the US to do his researches there.
History (Post-outbreak): Bio on how your character survived in the zombie infested world, and how they settled in a fortified tavern in a small New York town. Were they there all along, with no experience in the "real" new world? Or did they have a group, and settled as recently as yesterday?
He was stuck in a lab with other scientists. One elderly scientist died, and became a zombie. After this, it contaminated all their work, and everyone started panic. He killed people who had been infected, and fleed the lab. After travelling on his own on a stolen motorcycle, he found a group which he joined. The leader of this group went mad and poisoned all their water and food. On an expedition at the time, Robert found the entire group dead on the ground. The person he was on the expedition with was in on the treason, and shot Robert in the leg, leaving him to die. Robert crawled back to his motorcycle and went off to New York. He has recently arrived at the tavern, and is now waiting for someone to open the door to him.

Name: Seth Quincy

Sex: Male

Age: 32

Skills: Seth can cook with pretty much any edible item he's given. He's also a fitness nut, which means he has more gas left in the tank when everybody else is tired and it also means he's a little bit stronger than his build suggests.

Personality: On the exterior and during first impressions, Seth Quincy is a pleasant and fun guy. Until you work for him or get into a serious situation with him. When that happens, he isn't necessarily the meanest guy ever, but he really isn't as pleasant as the day you met him. Certain situations can turn him into a loud guy with lots of ideas, most of which aren't very smart and are brought upon by dumb spite and anger. He isn't exactly a leader, but he values his word and believes it's all he really has. If no one listens to his word, he gets offended and he thinks his offence is warranted.

Flaws: Seth is a bit set in his own ways, and he's often not interested in hearing other ideas once he's given his. He also gets offended a bit easily, starting conflict because he feels the need to defend himself. Additionally, he is not capable of fighting. He has no idea what to do with a gun or his own fists.

History (Pre-outbreak): In Albany, New York, Seth Quincy had owned a tattoo shop named "Rock God Tattoo." It was a name tied to what he wanted to do when he was done with the whole tattoo artist gig. Obviously that never worked out.

History (Post-outbreak): When the outbreak had happened, most of his apprentices and workers were at the shop, and others not working at the time had made their way over, thinking it was the best place to go. Seth led his tattoo shop to a good six months of survival, until a large horde of zombies passed through town. The horde had wiped out most of his group, excluding him and one of his apprentices, who had committed suicide shortly afterwards due to believing there was no hope for herself. For about two months after that, Seth traveled from ruined building to building in the city of Albany, scrounging about for necessities. He broke into a boarded up grocery store at the end of those two months, finding a small group of diverse individuals, all together to survive. They took pity on him and accepted Seth into the group. After a long four months, the group had grown to hate Seth as a result of his personality, and told him to "go anywhere but here." Hearing talks of a new hope in Stony Ridge, he hopped in the front seat of the grocer's van and stomped on the gas pedal, seeing nothing but the road and scattered walkers on either side of the van, zooming past him.

Robert, Frankie and Seth are all accepted! Although, ideally, I'd like to see you expand a bit on Robert's personality and related flaws, RPforthatPR. Also I'll say you can create 1-3 characters.

Name: Johnathan 'John' Gardner
Sex: Male
Age: 18
Appearance:

Skills:
Climbing: Can climb up almost any surface. May it be trees, buildings, fences, he can do it.

Tracking: An expert tracker. All he needs is tracks, or a scent, and hell do his best.

Personality: A very kind person. He has a good heart, and will do the best he can to help a friend or a loved one. Econ though he is kind, he is quiet and secluded. He mainly keeps to himself, but is always welcomed by other people to join in on talks and chats, because of his kind personality.

Flaws:
Steady Pace: While because of this, it gives him accurate tracking, but it also takes him, exceptionally longer to finish the tracking job. That risks being caught, or losing what he is tracking.

Big City Syndrome: As a boy that lived secluded, in the middle of no where, he is not used to big cities, and can easily get lost in them.

History (Pre-outbreak): he lived on a small farm ranch in the middle of no where. He helped his family on the farm to make a profit. In his free time, he was out in the woods, playing, climbing trees or hunting deer. Since he was out there so long, he developed many skills to aid him on his treks in the woods.

History (Post-outbreak): The night it started, he was in the woods while his mother, father, and younger sister, ate dinner, he came back late, and when he got there, he saw them. Their bodies, lifeless shells on the ground. He looked around the room for the source of their death. He noticed a small, infection on the piece of venison that they ate. He sat on the couch, and cried. He cried for fifteen minutes until he heard... The, groans. He saw them coming after him. He ran. Ran. Just ran. Until he found himself at the end of the big city. All he had was a small, six shot revolver, a pocket knife, and his hunting rifle around his back. He had to avoid many things, thugs, wild animals, and those... Things. Gruesome mutilated creatures. They couldn't run, so they called them walkers. He kept, walking, looting the places he could. It was obvious the world had went to shit. Now law was irrelevant, and he had to do anything to survive. He had hunkered up on the roof of a small, motel building. Until he heard the footsteps, of multiple people, a group.

Name: Randy Crew
Sex: Male
Age: 24

Appearance:

Skills: Randy is pretty good with killing walkers, he is better with a hand held weapon than a ranged one. His preferable approaches to killing walkers is quick and swift swings to the head, a bit of recklessness and courage in that swing. He is quite good with improvising melee weapons, putting together what others would consider it scraps into a walker killing Excalibur.

Randy is also self-disciplined (in some stuff) when it comes to resources, an ounce of berries or a handful of water is enough for him. He doesn't do it out of goodwell, or generosity, more like dwindling desire in food or water. Just enough to keep him up and kicking.

Another area he is good with is farming, since he was experienced with home-grown marijuana. He knows all about fertilizers, seeds and the whatnots to get a seed turned into a shrub or tree that produces juicy fruits. The interest however in farming is pretty much nonexistent for him.

Personality: Randy is a very indifferent person, he is not cold, he is warm and able to hold entertaining conversations when in the time for it. But he is indifferent, mildly charming when he does show concern. He can be selfish with strangers, unmerciful and untrusting with enemies or threats, or traitors. Randy usually enjoys the company of nobody, when in group sermons or meetings he remain slightly active and not fearful to voice his opinions. Most of the times however he is withdrawn and always daydreaming on the outside, his mind however clear of dreams, conscious to his surroundings, just not interested if it is not a threat.

Flaws: Randy can be very selfish at times, and he does not know or acknowledge it. Other times, rarely, he tries to act nobly for the greater good, but his methods of expressing it are unattractive or unconvincing to the other less withdrawn individuals.

Randy's recklessness was a reason for many close calls when fighting zombies, he seems suicidal at times, rushing into a crowd of walkers without planning ahead or anticipating the right moment. He also suffers from Insomnia and barely sleeps, always not as strong as he should be.

He constantly de-hydrates and sometimes fades slowly out, only to be awaken by a twig broken in the distance or a growl from a stuck walker. His survival instincts made sure his fade outs from lack of sleep didn't cause as much danger as his recklessness.

History (Pre-outbreak): Before the madness, Randy Crew was mad. He was unemployed and suffered great depression after failing to complete his college education. Loans, distant relatives disappearing and lack of real friends drove him to the brink of suicide, but he was too busy getting intoxicated with weed to entertain the thought of offing himself. He worked at some separate jobs, none lasting more than three months. This went out for two years after his depression, and it ended with him deciding to get into the drug business, producing weed and selling them to local stoners.

History (Post-outbreak): When the dead began walking the earth, Randy Crew fled from his house in Boston and went throughout the nearby cities with various groups. He moved fast, none of his previous groups ever making it for more than a month, just like his jobs, his jobs lasted more actually. He finally ended up in a New York town with a group that seemed able to handle itself, he been with them just recently and haven't talked to anyone yet on a deeper level, or even casually. When there was a walker attack he would help, when there was food stock organization of decision making he skipped it, but made sure to sound his disagreements on the major decision makings.

Zaresto Can't Wake Up

Banned Seen 7 yrs ago

Name: Fyodor Sokolov

Sex: Male

Age: 41

Skills:
Trained Killer: Has had a great deal of experience with firearms as well as vigorous training in hand-to-hand combat

Strong-Arm: His blows pack a punch, as he is rather muscular.

Personality: Fyodor is a generally lighthearted and genial man, the kind of guy who doesn't like to take things seriously. He doesn't mind following orders and generally does all he can to prevent trouble. However, he isn't as smart as most of his companions, often getting confused with speech or mannerisms that are abstract in nature. This confusion can be exacerbated by his not-so-firm grasp on the English language. On top of that, he can also be described as bold, cocky, and fearless when he wants to show off or have a good time, often not thinking before acting.

Flaws:
Clumsy: He is abysmal at trying to be sneaky or quiet, often times speaking too loudly or knocking down something he didn't notice.

Not too bright: He isn't very smart and generally doesn't think his actions through.

Too old for this: Fyodor's aging body doesn't have as much endurance or stamina as he did in his youth.

History (Pre-outbreak): Fyodor was born in the USSR, although he doesn't remember much of his past. During his childhood, the relationship between his mother and father wasn't the best, which meant his home wasn't the best place to hang out after school. He took to the streets, meeting people both shady and kind. Luckily, he didn't get involved in any gangs and later went into the army, where he learned skills that would be vital to his survival once the outbreak hit. After his military service, he moved to the United States, where he gained a job as a construction worker in Albany, NY, living out his life peacefully until the outbreak hit.

History (Post-outbreak): When the outbreak hit, Fyodor managed to convene with those in his construction crew to form a band of survivors. The group did relatively, having enough strength between them all and experience in building to reinforce an apartment complex. However, dwindling supplies and incompetence among their leadership led to the collapse of their little fort after two months. Luckily, Fyodor managed to escape, camping from place to place for a while until he finally found Stony Ridge, NY. He has been there ever since, helping out whenever he can.
