Bridget raised an eyebrow then spoke.
"If that be the name that you want, then you will have to be an orphan cousin rather than a daughter of the caravan. I'll leave you have a moment to think on what you want in this instance. Let's see how that gown looks on you..." Bridget spoke as she pulled out a new brush and comb out of a box.

Jacquelyn quickly changed out of her usual clothes and into the pink dress. And by all the Council, it was restricting. She could barely move, and she suspected it's purpose was to strangle girls foolish enough to keep it on for a long time.

"Hmmmm, bit too tight. Can't tell under those baggy clothes." Bridget went to another box and pulled out a blue gown.
"This one should fit nicely and give you some room to move in. Now have you decided to be our daughter or a cousin of mine?"

"I'd rather be a cousin, thank you," answered Jacquelyn as she changed from the pink dress (thank the Council) to the blue one. It fit better, but she'd be most comfortable in her regular clothing, a loose shirt with flowing sleeves with an even looser pair of pants.

"Jacquelyn Zoraida will be your name. Now to put these male clothes in the wash. Here is your new clothes. You will be expected to take good care of them. Now let me see your hair. It looks to be all tangled and needing to be trimmed.
Sean, why don't you run along and see to your duties?" Bridget suggested.

"Yes, dear. I'll be back to escort Jacquelyn to the girls' wagon and I'll let them know as well." Sean chuckled as he went out the door.

"Now then, how old are you and when is your birthday? Turn about." Bridget had the brush and comb ready.

Jacquelyn turned obediently, feeling as if everything that made her her was being stripped away by the woman. "This lunar cycle is Kordaine's Rising, right? Well then my birthday is in 10 lunars. That would make me 7."

"Good. Let's get your hair done. Actually it needs to be washed but that can be tomorrow morning....... When did you last do your hair? It is on the short side too..... I guess that will do for tonight. Tomorrow, we will go over the rules and your duties. Now to take you to where you will sleep. You will put your clothes in the hold under the bed. We have much to do in the next few days so you had best be on your best behavior." Bridget sighed after about fifteen minutes of untangling the unruly hair.

As she followed Bridget to her sleeping quarters, she decided to speak up about her name. Faeyoon didn't roll off the tongue perfectly right, and she had no real claim to it, but it was the only surname she had. "What's wrong with Faeyoon as a last name?" she asked.

"If you are going to be a cousin, you will need a cousin name. Unless you would rather be at the end of the receiving line. As a cousin, you would have more privileges than a waif who has none. A daughter would have more than a cousin." Bridget spoke as she walked to the door.
"So what is your final decision?"

"Alright, I'll be a cousin," resigned Jacquelyn. She made a mental note to now refer to herself as Jacquelyn Zoraida. It wasn't a very good feeling, having your last name taken away.

Bridget noticed how down Jacquelyn was and made a suggestion
"How about a compromise?. Your last name can be Faeyoon-Zoraida or Zoraida-Faeyoon which might be better for you since you might slip up. What do you think of that?"

Jacquelyn thought this idea was better. "I'd like that," she said, smiling. It wasn't impossible for one of the cousins to marry, after all. No one needs to know. And besides, she liked Faeyoon. It made her feel closer to her parents.

"Jacquelyn Zoraida-Faeyoon. A nice middle name might be good idea. Now get yourself inside and into your bed. We will talk more tomorrow." Bridget spoke as she opened the door.
"Jacquelyn will be sleeping in here. Noreene, show her where to put her clothes box and her cosmetic box."

"Yes, Mother. You will be sleeping here and under here is where you can put your own things." Noreene spoke.
"We will talk more tomorrow and welcome to the family, Jacquelyn."
Noreene gave Jacquelyn a quick wink as she showed Jacquelyn where to put things.

"Good night girls." Bridget spoke as she shut the door.

"Good night, Mother." The girls called out together.

Jacquelyn changed back into her old clothes, careful to prevent the coins hidden in the sleeves from jingling. Then she stuffed all of her things, little as the contents were, into one of the boxes and sat down on the smaller bed. It was almost silly, the way her wanderlust struck her whenever someone came into town. She would beg various merchants, mercenaries, and cartographers to take her with them, and they all shrugged or shook their heads slowly.

"Jacquelyn? Don't you like your new clothes? I thought that you looked really nice in that gown." Noreene asked as she got under the covers.

"Perhaps, but I'd just prefer my old clothes, is all. Especially for sleeping," Jacquelyn murmured. She too decided to blow out the candles for the day and crawled into one of the smaller beds.

"Father will light the candles when he checks on us. He won't like you being in those clothes either. But it is your choice. We aren't allowed to make such choices. I hate being walloped." Noreene spoke.

"Don't worry about her. She will learn in due time. At least you don't have to marry someone you don't know." Olivia spoke in a husky voice from crying.

Sura stood out in the plains, wondering if the buyer would actually show up. After roughly 30 minutes of boring waiting, he finally shows his face.
"Do you have it?" he asked.
"Certainly, my good friend. Do you have the money?" asks Sura. The other man nods, and Sura takes this time to get out a small brown coinpurse. He tips it over, and out slides a small jewel. Even in the darkness of night, it seems to glow green. "A very beautiful piece, I shall hate to see it go," he murmurs, remorsefully.
"Just hand it over," the buyer says, now impatient of this slow speaking merchant.
"I wonder why people buy jewels. It's of no practical use, but all civilizations know of it's value."
"Just give it!"
Sura raises both eyebrows, and hands over the jewel. The buyer passes a bag of coins to him.

Sean came along and gave the door a tap and open it to the darkness.

"Ok, now who blew out the candle?" he demanded as he lit the candle.
"I want to see each face of my girls now."

Caroline sat up and smiled as Sean looked her way. Olivia sat up with a proud teary face. Noreene sat up and smiled.
Bessie sat up with a disbelief on her face as well as tear streaks.

Sean stopped at Jacquelyn's place and waited impatiently.
"I want to see your face, young lady. That is a rule that I have for the females in my wagon."

Jacquelyn sat up, looking at Sean's face. He looked pretty annoyed right about now. she concluded that it's best she go with whatever he says, lest she receive one of Noreen's feared wallopings, or worse, an arranged marriage.
