Bio: Aaron Buckley was born into an "Old Money" Family that was descended from a railroad baron. From a young age, he was pushed by his family to excel in education, and his father expected that Aaron would one day attend Yale or Harvard and become a professor of philosophy, history, literature, economics, or political science. Despite a stressful and dull life, Aaron lived a life that could be classified as normal. All that changed, however, when, at the age of twelve, Aaron's father witnessed Aaron's power of the Fifth Element. Aaron was immediately withdrawn from school and was put into isolation, a kind of house arrest for the boy. His studies were taken over by his uncle. His father, previously only aloof, became more abusive. On his thirteenth birthday, Aaron got into a fight with his father over his treatment of him. It resulted in his father calling him a monster and slashing his eye. This sparked a rage in Aaron. Aaron killed his father and ran away from home. For a year, Aaron wandered the streets of the city, alone and afraid. Whenever someone discovered his power, they would turn away from him. Aaron discovered what it meant to be an outsider to society. One day, he came across a rumor that there was an orphanage for children like him, and he speedily made his way towards it.

Personality: As a human, Jonathan was quiet and obedient. He did not go against anything he could not tackle, as he was afraid. He believed that everything had a certain place in the world. Biography: He was born in the Orcish slums of Charleston. His Orcish birth-name is Urguz sibyn'Gurjak, although among non-orcs he uses an alias, Solomon. His real name is only listed in official records, and in all school records it is noted that he prefers to go by the name Solomon. Being born in the Orcish slums, he lived in poverty. He had a twin sister, who, like Solomon, was magical, and they were sent into the government-controlled zone. Although initially together, they became separated.

Solomon was traveling with his sister on train, and that train was attack. There was an explosion that derailed the train. When Solomon awoke, his sister was nowhere to be found. The recovery mission was considered to have been flaw, as there a number of people who went missing indefinitely. Solomon's sister was one such of these people. Solomon has since then made it his goal in life to find his missing sister. However, his movements have been restricted, and as a result he has had little luck in his search. Nonetheless, he had not been deterred, and intends to make the search more decisive and intense in the near future.

Personality: Theodore is genial and boisterous, and vain. He is, or at least attempts to be, friendly and personable, all while dominating a conversation. He is very proud of his achievements, which often seem to amazing to actually be true. Theodore only considers two men, Zheng He and Marco Polo, as his equals as explorers. Unfortunately, few believe his tales, such as him claiming to have gone to the North Pole and claiming to have received one of his arquebuses from the master of Japan, who gifted it to him after he defeated his best "knight" in a duel. He believes that he is God's gift to women, literally, and has wooed a great many of people. He is courageous, but desires self-preservation above almost all else.

Zenovia is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy. Established forty years, under the new type of government the monarch is only a symbolic head of state. The Parliament of Zenovia is the ruling body, and its members are chosen from among the provinces. There are two houses in parliament. The House of Commons is the branch that governs, and are made up of officials. The other is the House of Lords, which is made up of landed nobles, who are appointed by the sovereign under the recommendation of the Head of the House of Lords, and are not elected. They can serve as prime minister or cabinet ministers, and although there have been those who have done the latter, none have done the former yet. They do not vote on policy, but can technically veto it, although doing such an act with major legislation would create a constitutional crisis. The number of members of parliament sent is dependent on the population. Each member of parliament is from a district, and each district has its own election to select their member of parliament. The head of government is chosen by a majority vote among the members of parliament, and he is popular known as prime minister. He forms a government by recommending a number of fellow parliamentary members to the sovereign, and the sovereign will then officially appoint them.

Political Parties of Zenovia
The ruling party is the Zenovii Patriotic Party. They stress support of the nation, traditionalism, building a stable economy, and espouses political organism (aka One Nation Toryism), as well as building up to protect again outside threats (i.e. Moravia). The Centrist Democracy Party stresses pragmatism and fewer economic regulations. The Centrist Democracy Party was formed after the Liberals split following the establishment of the Liberal Constitution of 1925, and were far more traditional, and controlled parliament from 1925 to 1935. The Radical Party was founded by the more radical part of the Liberals, who felt the constitution did not go far enough. The radicals support disarmament, establishing relations with the PRK, the disbandment of the House of Lords, the establishment of radical change to industrial regulations, and redistribution of wealth, but not socialism. The fourth largest party is the Zenovii Radical Nationalist Party, which is fascist, and has no representation. The closest it ever got was in the 1933 election, when they were 3 points away from winning a seat. The Zenovii Party of the Left, a united front sort of radical leftist party of socialists, anarchists, and communists, would be the fourth largest party, but is outlawed and remains underground.

Economy of Zenovia
The gold standard still remains in Zenovia. Economic policy leans towards demand-side economics. Zenovia institutes a relatively free-market economy, although there are tariffs and moderate protectionism to protect homegrown industry. Imports to the urban areas is essential for the still-incomplete industrialization process. The economy is dependent on imports, and the collapse of foreign economies would be disastrous for the economy of Zenovia.

Race and Species
Most of the population are Zenovii, who are light-skinned, dark-haired humans who have settled this land since circa 700. However, there are number of the peoples from the south who have moved north into Zenovia. However, the largest and most prolific minority are the trolls from Setra, who immigrated to Zenovia for better working conditions, treatment, and to escape the social conditions of Setra. Although they faced many similar conditions, the higher pay and travel fatigue made most unwilling to move back or further. With nearly 80 years of immigration, discrimination has lessened to the level of life being noticeably better than in Setra, but there are still glaring issues with speciesism and discrimination.

Culture
Ioan Sforarza (1840 - 1900), the premier Zenovii romanticist, said "Zenovii have two qualities: peace and vibrancy." What is meant is not the normal definition of peace, but that Zenovii love the peace that stability brings. They are generally conservative, but they are not puritanical, and their conservatism did not stop them from revolution in the 1920s. Zenovii society is still fiercely traditional and patriarchal, although women have achieved suffrage in recent times. Zenovii fashion has always been marked by vibrant colors, and even modern fashion is so. Zenovii politicians, even though they wear normal polite official fashion, will have suits which seem upbeat. There is a strong folklore tradition, and oral traditions are strong in Zenovia. Bards still exist in the Zenovian countryside. There is a strong music tradition in Zenovia of upbeat music and emotional music, and the latter is especially treasured. With the coming of the Trolls, a major cultural influence from Setra came. Modern, foreign musical styles have yet to dent Zenovia. There is a strong literary tradition in Zenovii, which started when the national epic of The Song of Zeno was written. The literary eras are generally broken into the eras of Epic (700 - 1000), Medieval (1000 - 1500), Renaissance (1500 - 1600) Early Modern (1600 - 1720) Gothic (1720 - 1800) Romantic (1890 - 1900), Realist (1900 - 1930) Modern (1930 - present). Modern has turned its back on the radical realist literature of the recent past and returned to the fantastical. Modern plays have existed in Zenovia since the 17th century with the advent of Gavril Nestarontic (1600 - 1643) and Liviu Sulita (1610 - 1678), and have existed ever since, generally following the literary trends. The 17th century is considered the Golden Age of Zenovii Theatre.

Life in Zenovia
Zenovii are stereotyped by other nations as being backwards, as a nation full of peasants, and unnecessarily aristocratic. The social classes are split between the rich, the burghers, and the lower classes. The rich are split between the established aristocrats and the newly rich industrialists. The burghers are divided by the old traditional classes, such as the merchant class, and the newer class that came from urbanization. The peasants of the countryside, who still labor under the employment of lords, are still a majority of the country, but their conditions have improved since the abolition of feudalism. About a third of the population lives in the cities. Working conditions are relatively good, but very poor nonetheless. The safety laws are holdovers from the 1890s, themselves only a reform of an 1855. About 70% of factory machines are approved to have fundamental safety features, but there are no reparations for injuries or any safety doors. Child labor is common, but is on the decline, with only 35% of urbanite children working, although it is 78% among Trolls. The work-hour limit for adults is 12 hours, and 8-hours for children. Trolls make up 18% of urban areas. Due to the demand for labor, industrialists rarely attempt to give trolls discriminatory labor, as this would only aid a rival who does not do so, and because labor in Zenovia is still quite valuable. The Trolls still face discrimination, as large portions of Zenovii society ostracizes and discriminates against them. The most open-minded section of society, paticularly the Radicals (as in the political party) engaging in interaction with the Troll community.The literacy rate is on average 51%. Literacy among men is 42% greater than women due to disparities in education. Among children literacy is greater in boys than girls, but the divide is far smaller, 10%, than their adult counterparts, and girls are more literate than men on average. Trolls in general have a literacy rate of 15%, with females in general having a literacy rate of 2%. A divergent study shows that this is misleading, as the literacy rate in Troll is 25% in Trollish, with Trollish women having s literacy rate of 8%.

History

Medieval Era
In 694, facing plague, a poor harvest, and an incoming Elven invasion, the tribal Zenovii people moved south. Despite tribal legends claiming they either displaced or exterminated the natives, geneticists and archeologists have proven they merely slowly merged to create a single culture. As far as the 12th century, two different cultures could be found in Zenovia. 699, when what is now Northern Zenovia was conquered. In 725, the religion of the natives, Aeonism, was adopted by the Zenovii. In 1078, Zenovia adopted a more stable for of government, feudalism. From 1224 to 1237 the Zenovii moved south, conquering what is now Southern Zenovia. Carol I, King of Zenovia from 1240 to 1276, known as Carol the Conqueror, brought Zenovia to its largest extent it had ever seen. When he died in 1276 his son, Sfaditor, kept a tight fist of the empire until his death in 1287. However, the empire was simply too big to sustain, and Sfaditor's son split the empire in three, with the foreign kings, the Zenovii who ruled abroad, having their dynasties fall in 1374 and 1409, respectively. The remaining kingdom was reduced to the current borders of Zenovia by 1467. However, it remained a sizable empire.

Early Modern Era
In 1425, a new royal dynasty began in Zenovia, which rules to this day. This new dynasty saw the rise of a sophisticated culture. From about 1500 to 1600, an era of unprecedented cultural sophistication, known as the Zenovian Renaissance. However, during the era Zenovia gained its reputation as an undeveloped peasant nation. Although a vibrant cultural tradition continues, a reputation of a peasant nation an era behind except in the arts was established. In 1767, with changing economic and social attitudes, as well as the influence of enlightenment philosophy, serfdom was abolished. In 1773, the monarch, wanting to organize his advisors in a more orderly fashion, organized a group of ministers to advise him, which in turn lead to the creation of bureaucracy.

Modern Era
In 1836, the first factory was built. Industrialization, however, was slow until the 1870s. Trolls, wishing to escape the virtual wage slavery in Setra, immigrated to Zenovia. Eager for willing manpower, Zenovii industrialists were willing to pay higher prices for labor than was available in Setra. Under Radu IV, Zenovia instituted a series of trade and military reforms which helped bring Zenovia into the modern world. In 1874, the Diet of Zenovia met for the first time. However, the sovereignty still held great powers, and parliament merely aid in governance and gathered taxes. The 19th century brought in nationalism and liberalism as well. For the most part, liberalism was not answered, and royal decrees in 1855 and 1875 declared the continuation of the traditional powers of the monarch. However, nationalism became a strong force, influencing society from politics to literature. The 1860s are considered when Zenovian nationalism finally met its height, coinciding not coincidentally with the height of speciesism against trolls. Nationalism unfortunately turned deadly in the 1870s, when the heir apparent of the throne of Zenovia, was assassinated while on a diplomatic visit to the kingdom of Qualia. During these years, Carol XV was King. He was assassinated by Zenovii radicals who had followed him to Qualia. Zenovia blamed Qualia, and demanded strong monetary reparations and demanded the proper Qualian culprits be found. When Qualia did not, Zenova declared war. The war ended inconclusively, destabilizing the region and proving politically disastrous for both nations. Carol XV died before the end of the war. While Qualia was overthrown by a fascist coup, transforming into the Commonwealth of Moravia. The process was slower in Zenovia, thanks to the abdication of King Radu X in 1891, a political masterstroke by the parliament and the Bishop of Campulung, Boris Perigord, then only 25. However, it only delayed the inevitable. Clamor for change in the political system shot up as liberalism replaced nationalism. Facing the possibility of a stronger reaction and the rebellion of parliament, a liberal constitution was created in 1900, and the king abdicated in favor of his son, Carol XVI, who still lives as King Emeritus Carol Andronicus, and serves now as an agent of goodwill at home and abroad, and is now more popular than he was in 1900. The leader of the liberals, Radu Popescu, the man they said even Kings feared, was made prime minister. Popescu, however, was surprising traditional after taking power, much to the ire of his former peers. The old regime had saw that their was actually a major ideological split between the Liberals between classical and social liberalism, and hoped they could split the Liberals and have an aristocratic party dominate parliament. However, the Liberals retained party unity under Popescu until his death in 1917. The Conservative Party, a purely agrarian and aristocratic party, serves as the Official Opposition. His successor, Frideric Checescu, was prime minister for two years, but did not have the same trust among the Liberals as Popescu and in 1919 the Liberals split into two parties. The free-market classical liberals became the Centrist Democracy Party, who had the support of the leader of the liberals, Popescu, and thus became the majority faction. The Social Liberals, wanting a radical change in society in the form of the end of a politically powerful aristocracy and aid to the poor, became the Radical Party. From 1919 to 1925, Boris Perigord led a bi-partisan coalition, where he depended on the Conservatives more than the Liberals, but could not join the Conservative Party since he knew it would eventually limit his political career. 1928, forming from a coalition of aristocrats, economic protectionists, and anti-Moravians, the Zenovii Patriots Party is formed. It replaced the Conservative Party as the Official Opposition, and in 1929 the Conservatives merged completely. Despite forming a powerful political machine, Checescu was voted out of power in 1935 due to the Opposition focusing on protection against Moravia and promises of an ambitious overhaul of the sluggish economy. Perhaps most instrumental was a number of MPs defecting to the Zenovii Patriotic Party. In 1933 it was discovered that King Dragomir VI had stomach cancer, and no doctor was able to treat him successfully, and he died in 1934. He was succeeded by the current king, Mircea II. Women's suffrage was the biggest domestic issue of the 1930s behind the economy, and had not been granted by the Liberal Constitution of 1900. The supposedly symbolic figurehead, seeing that the world was no longer the way it was when he had grown up, and Zenovia needed to accept change in order to preserve itself. In 1937, Mircea II came out in support of women's suffrage. The prime minister tried to have this create a constitutional crisis, so he could have the monarch discredited, but found himself out maneuvered, and in 1939 women's suffrage was achieved. A new, increasingly hot social issue is inter-species romance between Zenovii and Trolls, with a burgeoning civil rights movement led by the renowned Throgg Magog, President of the National Trollish League (NTL).

Religious Beliefs
The Zenovii believe in Aeonism. According to the Enneads of Aeons, Ilezabeta was a prophetess who was dictated the history of God, his general nature, and the true moral lessons. God's name to mankind was Aeon. It's holy books are collected in a holy text known as the Holy Scriptures of Aeon.

Climate
The climate is fairly moderate. Zenovia is ideal for farmland, and is filled with green pastures, hills, and prairies. The Vladistok River is the largest river in Zenovia, running almost entirely through it, and there are other rivers and lakes, such as Lake Visare. It rains often enough to make farmland across the country.

Agriculture
About 2/3rds of the population lives in rural areas. Although modern agricultural techniques cause the shrinking of farms, and many start to move to the city, farming is still done by a majority of the population. Sustenance farming still is the most common technique, so it isn't exactly a large export.

Industry
Zenovia has several large exports. There has always been a market for Zenovian tobacco and cotton, and although they no longer warrant the prestige they once did, they continue to have a market. Steel is both exported and used in the industries, although Zenovia does not have capacity to be a top exporter in steel in the quantitative sense. Other metals, such as iron and copper, as well as coal, can also be found. Silver and gold can be found in Zenovia and are essential to the economy, but if overseas economies collapse, Zenovia's economy will go with it.

The Press
Unlike the other sections of Zenovii business and industry, the press is competitive and monopoly has been avoided. This is likely because all the newspapers and magazines of Zenovia are politically motivated, and rich party supporters, interest groups, and the parties themselves pour money into the press.

The Newspapers
As a general rule, the newspapers contain less political analysis than the tabloids, but they are just as biased. They may be a little more subtle with their bias, or they may not. Yellow Journalism, sensationalist reporting with little regard for accuracy, is the norm. There had once been local newspapers, but they have all been fizzled out by the powerful publishing companies.

The Capital Journal: Founded by Cezar Sabie in 1895, and it is the most profitable of all the newspapers in Zenovia. It was pro-Liberal when it first premiered, but has always been pro-capitalist and anti-labor. Politically, it backs the Centrist Democracy Party. It is largely responsible for the rise of Yellow Journalism and helped sparked the Little War.

The Zenovii Tribunal: Founded in 1883 by Dragomir Vis, it currently plays second fiddle to the Capital Journal. It opposed the Liberal Revolution of 1900 as radical. Currently it supports the Zenovii Patriotic Party. It is anti-reform and protectionist, unless the Zenovii Patriotic Party is not anti-reform or protectionists. It is read by the Patriotic Party faithful regularly.

The Castelul Tribune: Found by Andrei Galca in 1870, it is based in Castelul, the second largest city in Zenovia. It has always been strongly pro-reform. After the Liberal split, it has supported the Radicals. However, they have always been the most neutral of the newspapers, and did not embrace Yellow Journalism.

The Daily Advent: Founded in 1904. The Daily Advent is often the go-to newspaper for clerics and the religious right, and was founded by a Cardinal of the Church.

The National Neutral Newspaper: Founded in 1901. Despite its name, it is far from neutral, and takes a pro-aristocratic viewpoint and worldview. It is widely appreciated for its promotion of the arts and has been praised by Radicals for its promotion of environmentalism. It supports the Zenovii Patriotic Party. It has the best writers.

The Times: Founded in 1911, the Times is politically moderate and supports the Centrist Democracy Party.

The Liberty Times: Founded in 1925. The Liberty Times in read by the left wing of the Radical Party and has been endorsed by the National Trollish League, with a strong focus on civil rights.

The Magazines
The Magazines, as well as focusing on gossip, society, and culture, offer a more honest and in-depth political analysis that the newspapers are unable to accomplish.

The Liberal Review: The mouth-piece of the Centrist Democracy Party. Formed in 1890 by Nikolai Cusa to help spread Liberal ideals, since the time of Checescu and Nikolai Cusa's retirment due to a stroke in 1918 (he died in 1921) it has since made a hard turn towards to the right, unless the Centrist Democracy Party wills it otherwise. Cusa himself actually joined the Radical Party, but was unable to regained his magazine.

The Dragoon: The magazine in support of the Zenovii Patriotic Party. It offers mainly political analysis, and often defends protectionism and militarization, along with eugenics and speciesism.

The Radical: A magazine which openly supports the Radical Party. It is anti-racist, both in practical speciesism and in scientific speciesism. Until its legalization, it was a strong supporter of female suffrage. Social Liberalism, of course, is a primary concern here.

Aeonism Today: A religious magazine which runs mainly religious articles supporting Aeonist Orthodoxy and reactionary political articles which oppose liberalism. Politically, it gushes on praise on the Zenovii Patriotic Party for being a party opposed to liberalism, which is at best 50% correct.

The National: Originally the official magazine of the National Trollish League, it has since then been adopted by others. It has been adopted by the non-Orthodox Aeonists as their magazine, as well as others who would challenge social conventions.

The Intellectual: A condescendingly-named magazine which is read by those interested in intellectual subjects. Politically, it will eloquently refute the policies of the main two parties, and supports the Radical Party. However, its main focus is the arts, science, philosophy, math, and education.

By far the largest of the three branches. It was established in its current state during the reform of Vladim VII in 1604. Their uniforms have remained old fashioned. They fight in black and gray uniforms with a pinkelhaume helmet. The Zenovii Guards were originally meant to guard the King, but they grew in size, and served as elite troopers. In 1910, a section of the Guards was separated from them, and they became known as the Stormtroopers. The Stormtroopers served as shock troopers and special forces. A section of the army is the Troll Legion, not actually designed to be legion-sized, which is composed entirely of Trolls. The Troll Legion is composed of ferocious fighters who serve as shock troopers and the vanguard of the army, who are justifiably feared. Their uniform is identical to the main army.

Personal History

Michael Bauer is the son of Otto and Felicie Bauer, the owner of a saloon he inherited his from his father, and the oldest of seven siblings. He was born in Germany, in the Grand Duchy of Baden. His family participated in the Baden Revolution, one of the uprising that was part of the greater Revolutions of 1848, and Michael was ten years old at the time. After the uprising was crushed, his family, like many other German revolutionaries, immigrated to the United States, making him one of the Forty-Eighters.

After living a while in New York, his family moved westward to lands they deemed more attractive. They ended up in Central City. Michael’s father Otto ended up opening a saloon with the aid of the Combination. Michael fought in the American Civil War, first under Fremont then under Grant, returning with the rank of master sergeant. His father died in 1866, and Michael, as the eldest son, took over his father’s position as owner of the saloon.

In 1859, he married Carolin Hirsch, a fellow German Catholic Forty-Eighter. With her, he’s begun to raise a family. She gave birth to a son, Gerold, in 1860, a daughter, Adelheid, in 1867, a son, Fritz, in 1869, another daughter, Georgina, in 1872, and is currently pregnant with their fifth child. He has been a loyal low-ranking member of the Combination, using his position as Saloon Owner to induce people, especially poor immigrants, to vote in line with the political machine.

Brief Character Concept: Juna, despite her gentle appearances, is far from gentle. She is quick in combat, and surprisingly strong as well. She skillfully wields her sword, and uses her many knives as further support in battle. Her personality, at least on the surface, is that of a carefree, if snarky, individual. She lives a life full of independence, and is known to be loyal to no one except Lothren. She has two true goals in life, and that is to kill Amon Serona and see that Alonso lives out his life peacefully.

History: Juna was born to a pair of normal Elven parents on the border of Areta. She had a normal youth, where she lived as a carefree, youthful spirit, with her childhood friend Ilias. Then she met greatest love of her life, Hadrian, a young human man. They would often play the harp together, and he taught her how to sing. Yet when they had finally grown close, Hadrian succumbed to a sickness that he had long held secret. Hadrian passed away from Juno seemingly as quickly as he had come, and although her heart healed in time, a deep scar would remain in her heart.

She grew close yet again to Ilias, and in time the two of them were to be married. Yet it was not to be, for on the day her wedding was to be held, the Aretan Knights came. Illias and Juna’s parents were killed, and only Juna survived. She cried, mourned, and cursed her fate. She remembered the face and the name of the one she saw as most responsible, Amon Serona, and Juna swore to herself that every future day of hers would be dedicated to hunting him down until one of them was dead. Juna, over the years honed her skill in fighting mostly through experience.

She does not hesitate to speak of how she has murdered. Before she was among the Mummers, she was caught in a human village while chasing down Amon. She found herself having a hard time escaping, and she slew a few knights, and a few people who shouldn’t have died did die as well. Juna never refers to this event in any detail, only saying that it makes her a murderer. She would not have gotten out alive were it not for Lothren, and for this Juna offered him unflinching loyalty. When she met Lothren, and he offered her a place as one of the Ytharien, Juna was hesitant, but accepted. With her impeccable skill at both the harp and her beautiful singing voice, as well as her personality, Juna was a natural performer, and as the years passed she grew into the role.

Culture: Society is divided between the ruling class and the lower Class. Edimmu society is patriarchal, but there is a greater deal of equality than in other patriarchies. Women can run their own businesses, hold professions, and there is no-fault divorce. They wear simple attire, at least for now, which consist of light brown robes, and similar for both sexes. The ruling class uses dyes to color their robes in order to differentiate themselves from the commoners; the nobles use blue, and the priests use white.

There is a complex society consisting of many professions, including pottermen, fishermen, and weavers, healers, diviners, artisans, warriors, hunters, teachers, academics, nobles, and priests. The battle between order and chaos is considered very important, and each man and woman sees their profession as their own part in the battle of order against chaos. The ruling class consists of the nobles and the priests, while the rest belong to the ruling class.

Concubinage is practiced, but it is only allowed for men. There are no prejudices against homosexuality, and in fact the heterosexual-homosexual binary does not exist within Edimmu society. When someone’s spouse does not satisfy them, it is common for them to gain a homosexual lover if they do not want to divorce.
Religion Overview: Edimmu religion is polytheistic. At the very head of the pantheon is Eliyahu, who rules as King of the gods. Outline of Military Tactics and Doctrine: Ashkar has held a professional army since Sumarael the Great organized it into one almost five-hundred years ago. Its core is the heavy infantry, covered in armor of leather and iron, whose main weapon is an iron spear along with their iron shields. The infantry is supported by arches, who shoot bows with iron tips with wooden bows, which can kill enemies from far away. Light infantry consists of men in leather armor, who are armed with javelins and swords. Unicorns are used as cavalry, and will carry a cavalryman wielding a long spear. Their horns are used to great effectiveness. Chariots were drawn by a pair of unicorn and holding a spearman and a pair of archers, and are used to break the enemy’s formation. The Fezagh are used as a type of heavy cavalry, and are used to break enemy formation.

Ashkar has a sense of military tactics. The army generally stands in an organized formation, although this does not extend to the light infantry, whose chief strength is mobility. The heavy infantry can engage in a shield wall formation, which will block any from breaking their formation.

Outline of Naval Tactics and Doctrine: Once the Ashkarian navy had been built and designed solely to counter Zaqir’s raiding-base naval forces, the end of the raids and wars between the two have led to a complete restructuring of the navy. Heavy ships serve as the center of the navy as the powerful vanguard supported by the medium ships, while the light ships serve an auxiliary role. Consisting of galleys, the method of destroying enemy ships consists of ramming them to pieces. This does not cause real damage to the ship which is engaging in the ramming. The Kingdom of Idorica is a new state, established a little over a century ago. It was formed from the ashes of the collection of cultural connected but politically independent kingdoms. In the previous centuries, they steadily reconquered the territory which had previously been conquered by the Timluks in the 8th century. Emerging larger and stronger than ever, the Idoricans, now unified, now have taken their place among the great and modern powers of Antova.

Feudalism has declined, although the trappings of nobles and limited social mobility remain. In place of the old system emerges the monarchy, more powerful than ever before. Meanwhile, a wave of modernism spreads across Idorica. The age of chivalry has dawned, and in the place of plate-armored knights are Idorican pikemen and arquebusiers. The arts and sciences continue to flourish in Idorica.

With the help of the Idorican Inquisition, Idorica has emerged as a homogenous state both religiously and ethnically. Following centuries of holy war, the Idoricans have emerged as notably pious, with a good amount of bishops, archbishops, and cardinals hailing from Idorica. However pious they may be, however, they are not without their own ambition. Idorica has its own plots, aiming to hold a firm influence on Ambrusian Church, so that the High Pontiff may not be too bothersome to the King’s policies abroad.

Although the medieval period of feudalism may have ended, the trappings of feudalism for the most part remain, with one major difference. In the countryside, most people remain peasants, below the nobles. From the local nobles, taxes are collected from money that is gained from the peasant. The peasants, in turn, gain their income through the trading of their goods or crops at local marketplaces. It is not only from traditional sources, however, where goods come from. With the growth of commerce, the cities have grown larger, and the bourgeoisie more powerful.

The Cortes is the parliamentary body of Idorica. Initially founded by the most powerful nobles in the kingdom as an advisory council to the King in the 9th century, it developed into one of the first parliaments in Antova. During the centuries of the Reconquista, the nobles came under economic duress and stress, leading to the rise of the burghers of the city. This led to the entrance of the bourgeoisie into the Cortes. Today, however, the power of the King has increased, and the nobility once again dominates the Cortes, which now is little more than a rubberstamp organization. They at least have the right to resist the raising of taxation, but they’ve yet to carry out this right.

Idorica, especially following unification, has gone through a cultural renaissance. Influenced by a rediscovery of the ancient classic works, a style known as classicalism arose. In Idorica, however, classicalism was combined with both the styles of traditional Idorican and Timluk styles to create a unique style of architecture known as Mudeja. Painting and literature saw the beginning of a golden age. Painting was done in the style of oil paintings, while literature was divided into poetry and prose, and both were heavily under the influence of humanism.

The scholastic period developed during the medieval period continues to develop and thrive. The Universities of Idorica have steadily increased in quality, and now the universities of Idorica can rival those of Mille-Sassau. The Scholastics, as always, have discussed theology, natural theology, natural law, and ethics, but have rejuvenated by the renaissance, and now extend their philosophy to new topics as well, like political philosophy and economics.

The people of Idorica are noticeable pious. This is as a result of both their centuries as holy warriors and because they are not very close, geographically, to the High Pontiff. The Church occupies, as it does in other countries, a unique position in Idorican society. They are considered a class wholly separate from the commoners and nobles. They are in possession of a considerable wealth and political power. With their support, the Kings of Idorica have gained a reputation as defenders of the faith.

Theologically, both the people and the Church are completely orthodox. However, the crown of Idorica has its eye on influence in the College of Cardinals, and aims to keep it there. The Idoricans hopes that a pro-Idorican monarch will be crowned. The King has a considerable influence over Idorican bishops, archbishops, and cardinals, so the Idorican cardinals shall try to ensure the King has his way.

Syros: The capital of the country, as well as the largest settlement in the Kingdom. It is noted for its large, sturdy, and recently built stone walls. This was to keep the city safe from the new technologies that were discovered by the outsiders. It lies inland, behind a thick forest, so generally it is safe from invasion. Its population prospers from trade and goods from the provinces, and it is noted for its many temples that are filled with many riches.

Calipa: A very old city, known for its tall wooden walls and structures, as well as it religious and historical significance. It was the home of both Pithias and Kaergyn. It has a number of military bases situated here, and the venerable Society of Gariniys, a sort of military academy, is situated her.

Synerze: The most westward major city, as well as the main port-town of Attis. Though it is known as a port town and center of trade in Attis, to outsiders it is better known as the center of Attian piracy.

Caesis: A major city of Attis. Though having plenty of power in manufacturing, trade, and manpower, they are best known for their ready supply of talent. Many individuals in Attis who are responsible for innovation in the country come from Caesis.

Valias: The most populated city behind Syros. It is known for being a center of manufacturing and trade.

Zaera: The largest manufacturing center in the country.

The religion of Attis is simply called Attianism. Attians themselves simply call in “religion.” They deny all the doctrines and precepts of the Abandonittes, Strandistants, and Usurpians, and accuse these religions of blasphemy and atheism. Attianism is at its core polytheistic, and they assert that, contrary to the claims of the doctrines of the outsiders, the divine has never left. If pressed to prove this, they would merely point to a tree or a river, and would see that as sufficient proof of the continued providence of the gods. Moreover, there is always the three sister pulling the strings behind everything, making sure everything is going according to (their) plan. Only Ivirunys is powerful enough to defy fate.

The creator deity is none other Chaos. All other beings sprung from the primordial chaos. The mother of the gods was Haia, but the chief deity of the pantheon is Ivirunys. However, among the populace another goddess is highly worshipped, and her number of shrines surely outnumbers that of Iviruna. Her name is Atargatis, and she is a goddess of fertility, as well as the goddess of piety and protection. The famous great temple at Syros is dedicated to Atargatis.

There are aspects of Attianism considered incredible to outsiders. The priestly duties are in general considered to have a womanly aspect to this. This has the result of a creating many female priests, but it also has other results as well. The priestess’ of Atargatis are men who castrated themselves and cross-dress. The priestess’ of the love goddess Lyeana meanwhile engage in sacred prostitution. Attians know outsiders abhore these practices, and this is one of the reasons Attians believe that they and outsiders can never peacefully co-exist. There are many other Mysteries as well. At the Mysteries of Bacchis, people get drunk and engage in sensuous revelries, and women and slaves participate as well, so this Mystery is popular in cities across the country. In the Mysteries of the fate sisters people thoughtfully ponder on the orderliness of the universe and fatalism while they engage in their wine-based ritual. In the Mysteries of Adrea, the ritual is orderly and austere, but pomp and with much feasting.

Meanwhile, worship in the countryside is very different. The worship is simpler there, with there simply being small shrines. The priests are exclusively male in the countryside, for there is no need for the complex Mysteries of the city folk. Worship of Adrea, Agea, Lorana, Kalea, and Soris is strong there, for they are the most relevant to the farmers and hunters of the countryside.

Leaving God Era

According to the Attians, the history of their country extends beyond that which the Outsiders call as the Leaving God Era, and continued passed it without interruption. This is according to their account as told by the rhapsodes and poets. This they offer up as their ultimate refutation to the outsiders of their doctrines, but on the contrary the outsiders consider the “heathenish whispers,” as but silly legends. We shall pass over these legends for the most part, but we ought to note that the Attians claim that the most ancient of the myths, such as the tales of Taergynis and his exploits.

Many Shields Era

Whatever the case of these tales, it is agreed that when the Many Shields era began, the Attians were suffering. The rhapsodes and poets are in agreement when they say that from the far north they migrated to the continent which thereafter they made their home. Drought had struck all the Attians’ lands and brought hunger to many. The people would have perished, but the man named Attis named with deft words persuaded the chieftains to leave all possessions excepting their boats and their sails and take their people on a voyage across the sea. Yet many were not convinced by the words of Attis, and the ninty-nine tribes originally, only thirty-three heeded his words. Of the remaining forty-four, their fate remains unknown. According to the outsiders, there is no land to the far north, but the Attians take no heed of this.

The fleet of Attis arrived stricken with hunger and poverty. Of the thirty-three tribes who had set off with Attis, only eleven survived to see land. Once arriving, they foraged for food, but found little. Many spoke loudly of their disapproval to Attis, so Attis promised that he would soon lift hunger from them. So he took a man out of every eight men from all eleven-tribes, and ventured deep into the mountain, where he found the Cremins (“kindly ones”). They went into their villages and became mad, and slew the men, took away all their food, and took away their women by means of violence, and the most notable of these women was Kaergysa, who was consort of the King of the Cremins.

Then the Cremins moved in retaliation, and moved against the Attians, and slew three tribes and Attis. Attis was succeeded by Daervys, beloved to him above all women, bearing these events in mind, went forth with a hundred men from each tribe and prepared a second violence unto the Cremins. Daervys next met with the King of the Cremins on the battlefield. There it was agreed that Daervys would marry Kaergysa and they would in addition keep all the women which they had carried off, and in return the Attians would give up a fair amount of their own women. This was agreed to, and both parties left satisfied. This was the first period when the sons of Attis were unified. Others say that this is a myth, and a residue of the history of the intermixing of Attians and the island natives.

During the reign of Corgis the descendants of Attis and their Cremin allies were assailed by Daeles, who marched with his great army, and would in time form a great empire. Yet the Attians and the Cremins did not wait to serve within it, and sent a force against it, and when it was vanquished and Daeles destroyed two tribes of the Attians and killed their King Corgis the Atians and Cremin fled south beyond the Mountains of Decaelo and the river of Haliyes.

Thus the Attians settled into the parts which they now inhabit. When the Attians crossed the Mountains of Decaelo and the river of Haliyes they were kingless and disorganized, and scattered into seven. In their division, there was a quarrelling amongst them. Amongst these seven greatest were Fyrganis, Cremin, and Lanis. The Daraenae were content to rule in peace their own lands, and dwell in continuance in their own country without molestation from their southern friends. Yet for the others it was not so in their minds. Petty quarreling and raiding began amongst the southern tribes, yet all tribes continued in existence until 106, when Myr was conquered by Zaganis and its people forthwith enslaved. Fyrganis, under rule of Corgis, was through marriage allied with the Chieftain of Myr, for his son Dordano was married the daughter of the Chieftain of Myr, and so in retaliation retaliated. Yet when his force of arms was brought to Myr, Raersyn II, Chief of Zaganis annihilated his army and demanded a great ransom before Corgis would be allowed again his freedom.

Arathor, Chieftain of Lanis, saw now the opportunity to extend his dominion beyond its current borders, for it seemed that Fyrganis was weak and Cremin was passive. Thus began the rivalry of Fyrganis and Lanis. Arathor came to the tribes of Dalr and Raernys were enslaved, and took the daughter of the Chieftain of Zaganis in marriage. When Arathor came to Fyrganis the two armies met, and Arathor’s was the victor, and he demanded from Corgis and his tribe a fixed tribute taken annually. So Fyrganis suffered while Lanis prospered.

It was in 118 that Corgis died and his son Dordano ascended to the throne of Fyrganis. Skilled in the art of finance, Dordano secured for his people the resources necessary so that they could flourish. Yet only briefly were they content, for with eyes of hate they looked towards Fyrganis, and in this Dordano was sympathetic. On advice of his wife Dordano sent warriors into Myr and liberated the slaves and made them one with Fyrganis. Zaganis took offense and asked for aid from Lanis, but Arathor, concerned mainly with keeping under control his empire of slaves, offered promises, but little which was concrete. So Fyrganis went to war with Zaganis, and Dordano, far the superior in resources and ability, defeated them and demanded from them a tribute.

Arathor, Chieftain of Lanis, was not keen on this turn of events and so took his army to meet Dordano, and both met in a plain among the lands of the tribe of Raernys, and both fought valiantly, but it was Dordano who routed his foe. Arathor then retreated and settled for a reduced empire. Under Dordano were the lands of Fyrganis, Myr, and Zaganis, while under Dordano were the lands of Lanis, Dalr, and Raernys. So under Dordano, Fyrganis prospered, but in 150 Dordano died, and it seemed that the task of rulership was a burden too great for Daevrys, son of Dordano. As he stepped on to his father’s throne, the prestige and luster of Fyrganis began to fade under his weak reign.

So quarreling once again began among the tribes. In both Fyrganis and Lanis the lesser tribes had become one with the greater, and so now there remained only Fyrganis and Lanis, as well as Cremens to the north, who remained passive. There now remained but three tribes. It is recorded that Fyrganis and Lanis once again began to raid one another. According to the words of the poets and rhapsodes, the Lanisians kidnapped Dyrenea, a great beauty among Fyrganis, which began a great war. Yet the historian Kaervyns writes that on the contrary, Dyrenea was but a legend, and the true cause was merely the heightening of the hostilities that already were existent.

Fyrganis and Lanis began to war for years without end, with much death being the result. According to the legends, they built a truce with each other through the mediation of Cremens, with the three of them forming a single nation. Kaervyns instead says that Cremens attacked the other two tribes when they were weak and conquered them. Whatever the case, Cremens subsequently ruled the Attians, first under Daelysn, starting in 167. Cremens rule continued without complication until 234, when outsiders to the east called Xerantes invaded, whose bronze had the advantage over the Attians’ stone and wood. Lead by High Chieftain Daevrys, a descendant of Fyrganis, the Attians retreated south-west to escape from the Xerantes. Daervys established a kingship there, and halted the Xerantes advance when they tried to chase them. The new land that his people established themselves in he dubbed Attis, after their founder, and the people began to call themselves Attians. It was during this period that Hesias lived.
In the meantime, Attis focused on recovering and expanding. After Daervys’ death in 250 Attis began to divide once again, separating into independent tribes, though they still all said that they were part of Attis. They were to be united by the next great leader of Attis, Nyvaernys. In 300 the Xerantes attempted to invade Attis. They would have succeeded, but Nyvaernys, Chieftain of the largest and most powerful tribe, served as a unifier, and made the tribes into a united front that he led, and now having bronze weapons as well, Xerentes no longer had the advantage. Together Attis defeated Xerantes, and Xerantes would never truly recover. The tribes, however, were not keen to keep unity, and defied Nyvaernys when he tried to make himself Overking. Nyvaernys fought back, waging a war to make to control the tribes. He succeeded, but the war was long and hard, waged from 304 to 311. Nyvaernys then died in 321, and he was succeeded by his son Dordano. Dordano was assassinated in 323 by those who did not approve of unified rule, and was succeeded by his son Avlys, who was very young (24). Civil war soon began, and Avylys provided ineffective leadership, and was killed by the tribes in battle in 326. The war did not stop, however, and continued amidst factions among the tribes, each faction hoping their contender could become Overking. In 329, Chieftain Leavrys became Overking among Attis. It was during this tumultuous period that Pithis lived, and his teachings offered an escape from it all.

Leavrys did not want his legacy to end up like Nyvaernys and Daervys had. He centralized the state by reducing the power of the tribes, fighting a war between 332 and 337 against tribesmen who resented this, in order to create a stable dynasty. In 340 Leavrys died, but his son Dordano II was able to a have a stable reign. He relaxed tribal restrictions, creating a golden age of art and culture.

Suuban Imperial Era

The Laveryaed reigned over a free, decentralized, and prosperous golden age in Attis. This all came to an end when Suuban Empire came around. In 531, the Suuban Empire sent a fleet to subjugate Attis. Attis of course resisted, but the iron weapons of the Suuban Empire overpowered them. Attis was subjugated by the Suuban legionaries. Some Attians migrated north, away from Suuban, taking their culture and religion with them, and consequently safeguarded much of the original culture and religion of Attis. Attis (Bythia according to the outsider Suubans) was considered a backwards province that was not deserving of much attention.

The Chainmail Era

When Suu sank in 900, the enslaved Attians revolted immediately, and they were aided by the Attians to the north. About three-fourths of the Suuban garrison left immediately in order to meet up with the mainland, and the remaining garrison would receive no reinforcements and were soon overwhelmed by the Attians.

The Attians were led by Qaevrys, whose family had long led the Attians who had lived in exile in the north. As usual, the Attians possessed a fierce independent spirit. When Qaevrys was crowned as overking, there was a fierce controversy over it. A civil broke out between the “Monarchists” and “Tribalists.” The war was waged between 901 and 908. In 908 Qaevrys was betrayed by his close aids and given up to the Tribalists, and was ambushed and killed. By then, however, the war was already over. Qaevrys son-in-law, Daevrys, defeated the remaining of the Tribalists and created a dynasty. The Qaervryiads had to begin a long and arduous rebuilding of their nation. Many things had been lost due to the oppression of the Suubans, and their country was in a desperate state. However, peace allowed the process to be carried out. Daervys was deeply disturbed by any sign of Suubanism among the Attians, so he banned the Suuban language, as well as their culture, literature, arts, and religion. He, however, did favor Suuban technological achievements. Attis traditionally was an oral society, but for the moment simply oral communication would not be sufficient in order to restore Attian culture. Encyclopedias of medicine, religion, history, myth, and even mathematics and science (these were fields almost exclusively known through Suuban knowledge) were written. Poems, hymns, and theogonies were written down. Iron was adopted in favor of bronze, and stone walls were adopted in favor of wooden ones.

While the outsiders to the west were engaged in fierce and bloody struggles, Attis was at peace while they revived and rejuvenated their culture. Nonetheless, a great many of important cultural and religious artifacts were lost during the occupation, to the lament of Attis. Additionally, despite defeating the Tribalists to become King, Daevrys did not infringe too greatly on the rights of the tribes. As a result, Attis remained highly tribalized, with Attians having greater true ties to the tribes of their ancestors than to their king.

Peace continued until 1078. Discontent had been rising with King Arathor III, who had mostly withdrawn from politics, his strings being pulled by his advisors, especially by his top advisor Brysiays of Cremins. It was Arathor’s wife, Caela, who led the rebellion against Brysiays in Arathor’s name. In 1082 Brysiays fled after a bloody civil war, and Caela declared royal power restored, though it was Caela herself who actually was in control.

The Plate and Fire Era

The Plate and Fire Era in Attis began with Caela’s death in 1101. Her crisis began what is called the Crisis of the 11th Century. Caela’s son Arathor IV ascended to the throne, but the tribes unanimously announced that they would not be accepting his reign. Instead, factions among the tribes put forward their own candidate to the throne. Bloody civil war occurred for many years. From 1101 to 1127, there were 16 men who held the throne and 30 men who claimed it. During this period, there was a burgeoning of religious activity and participation in the mysteries, for these activities allowed people to withdraw from the world. This period produced the finest Attian philosopher, Aegyris. There had been previous Attian philosophers, but none had engaged in this practice as deeply and as seriously as Aegyris. Philosophy was mostly a western discipline practiced by outsiders, so Attian philosophy was still in its infancy when Aegyris came along.

In metaphysics, Aegyris was an idealist who believed that there was a higher, immaterial realm. He thought that it could never be fully reached by mortals, but could be approached through religious ecstasy. In cosmology, Aegyris says that existence, both the lower material and the higher immaterial realm, were created by the eternal, transcendent One. The One is not a normal god, and is not knowable because though the One is conscious and sentient, it is only so by a definition incomparable to the definition used to describe humans. In epistemology, Aegyris is a rationalist. In science, Aegyris’ main contributions is in astronomy, where he divides the heavenly bodies into stars and suns. The smaller heavenly bodies are stars, while the larger and brighter ones are suns. He says, additionally, that the heavenly bodies are made up mostly of fire, but also of air. In ethics, he stresses virtue, altruism, and stoicism. In political philosophy, he supports withdrawing from the world and says communal villages are the ideal state. In logic, Aegyris worked with formal or term logic, and though knowledgeable and eager to improve on his western predecessors, is not a revolutionary. In aesthetics, Aegyris was keenly interested, and wrote several works on poetry and literary theory and criticism.

In 1127, Daevrys VI became King, defeating the remainder of his rivals. Peace did not come, however. In the north, the region of Vaels seceded and tried to become its own country, and the rest of the tribes united in their enmity against Vaels. Vaels was defeated by 1130, and Daervys began the process to recovery. However, divisions among the tribes were deep, and it seemed conflict would eventually resume. Daevrys convened a council, and redressed the wrongs of the tribes and addressed their desires. This, however, seemed that it could only provide a temporary solution, because there was no real loyalty. With Daervys’ death in 1136, chaos and civil war once again reigned. Daervys’ own heir was promptly assassinated by his own guards, and war emerged between three factions, the Vaeiliad, the Caeliad, and the Hauliad, each with its own claim to the throne. They warred for a number of years, breaking apart the Kingdom by the seams and stirring deep divisions. However, the army also began to modernize.
A truce was signed in 1144, and Valdos, who was of a neutral party, became King. This did not help things. Rather, it allowed divisions to deepen. It looked that the final days of a unite Attis had reached its final days, and the days of divided tribes like the years before the Second Xerantes Invasion would once again return. The situation changed completely in 1152, the year the First Bythian Crusade began. All Attians put aside their differences and united against a common goal, fight against the invading blasphemers. At the Battle of Phielesian Fields, the Attians suffered a great defeat at the hand of the crusaders in 1153. Things seemed to be going well for the Crusaders and bad for the Attians until 1156, when a more organized Attian army crushed the crusaders at the Battle of Syros. After this decisive defeat the crusaders were on the defensive, and held on until 1158 when a full retreat was sounded. Victory was considered to have been ordained by heaven. Attians later called Valdos by the epithet of the Great. In 1160, Valdos officially ended the truce between the tribes and declared a unity in the country. This was the real beginning of a new dynasty.

In 1168, Valdos died at the age of 65. He was succeeded by his son, Dardano V, aged 43. Dardano was ambitious, and aimed to create a great country. One of the first ways he did this was reform. He patronized science, medicine, and the Aegyrian philosophers. He ensured that the army was armed with good steel and had plenty of plate armor and catapults. When the Second Bythian Crusade began in 1192, the Westerners invaded. The war was hard-fought, but many of the crusaders were too disorganized, and the Attians knew the terrain while the outsiders didn’t. In 1199 the Crusaders were completely crushed. Valdos died not long after in 1200.

The Third Bythian Crusade began in 1285. Most of the Crusaders ran into problems on the way, and only one of the Crusading armies actually landed on Attis. Though the Crusaders fought fiercely, they did not have the numbers or knowledge of the land in order to gain victory. In 1289 the crusaders withdrew and the Third Bythian Crusade ended. Meanwhile, Attian seamen were beginning to raid the countryside of the outsiders, gaining loot and resources.

There was a small Fourth Bythian Crusade that was fairly insignificant as far as the Western Lands are concerned. To Attis, however, it is very important because it showed the vulnerability of Attian armies. The Fourth Crusade consisted of a brief Outsider invasion and battle in 1338, and though the Attians were successful they suffered disproportionately large casualties, showcasing certain errors within the Attian army. This would eventually lead to the overthrow of the Valdan Dynasty. The Valdan Dynasty was no as fresh and talented as it once was, and a combination of a refusal to properly modernize and an obstinate clutching to power led them to be ousted by the power of the tribes. Instead, the general and religious leader Faevrys was made King in 1399. He put a focus on reforming the military in general, and ensuring that Attis did not fall behind in technology.

In the Fifth Bythian Crusade, circa 1494, was like fourth one and was crushed quickly. The Westerners were surprised to learn that the Attians had modern weapons alongside them. Today Attis remains on guard for invasions from the westerners. The Westerners are nearly always the original innovators in technology, so Attis is always careful that it does not stagnant too much in military technology. Even so, Attis has remained true to its cultural roots, and many things go on as they have for the last thousand years.

Pagan Culture – Unlike other countries, Attis still holds strong to its roots of paganism. This, of course, has the consequences of attracting a lot of unwanted attention from unsympathetic neighbors, who have declared holy wars on them in the past. This goes hand in hand with their generally more rustic culture.
Permeation of Religion – Religion permeates most areas of society. All art, poetry, and the like is of course religious in nature. The Pithian Societies, which all men of political prominence join in order to engage in politics, are religious in nature. Ostensibly devoted to the teachings of the legendary sage Pithis, they are actually quite syncretic in nature, and are more of political councils. Even in mathematics and in the sciences (or what is known of them) things are cast in the veil of religion. All art, poetry, and the like are intensely religious in subject.

A More Magical Society – Magic tends to survive better in places that are relatively isolated from the metropolises of civilizations. Attis has plenty of places like this, so it is little wonder then that there are more witches here than in other lands, and its strange beasts run wild.

Curious Culture – To the few westerners who have seen it, Attian cultural norms are a shocking sight. The Attians still practice paganism, they disbelieve in the “Leaving God” concept, and they scoff at the notion that divinity is not still with humanity. This, however, only scratches the surface of what would shock a westerner. More shocking to westerners is the castrated and cross-dressing Priests of the goddess Atargatis, and the existence of sacred prostitution. Sometimes these two things overlap, though in general they do not, for they apply to different deities. In general there are many women and transgender of the priestly class, for it is considered a womanish task, but there are many men who take up the task as well. An Attian would point out that the two societies are so different only because they went in different directions, but in reality a real Attian would never bother to tell a foreigner so. A real Attian does not believe that a foreigner has any place among them, for the Westerners and the Attians are so incompatible that they may as well be different sorts of animals, though they are both men.

Knowledge of Medicine – Attis has advanced (for the time) medicine. This occurred through a combination of coincidence, necessity, and the veneration of the medical profession. Pithis was a physician as well as a mystic and theologian. Nowadays, the Western countries have (presumably) about equaled Attis in medical technology.
Xenophobia – There may have been friendly encounters in the past with outsiders, but that is far in the past now. Now Attians can only recall hostilities when they think of foreigners. In the past Westerners have tried to conquer Attis and convert them to their peculiar and blasphemous religion, though they have so far failed. Currently it is only their shared xenophobia that is keeping the kingdom together as one coherent whole.
Laconic – One of the great sages of the distant past, Pithis, valued silence and a quiet demeanor. Many others have fallen suit, and as a result a quiet and reserved demeanor and attitude is noted in many Attians. This does not mean they are shy, however, for they regard directness as a virtue and shyness as a vice. As a result of this, they are not known to be the most talkative of fellows. However, they have turned sarcasm into an art form, and it is the Kingdom’s most popular pastime.

Sea Expertise – Attians know how to build great longboats, and use their expertise at shipbuilding, navigation, and piracy to raid for more guns.

In general, the Attian military prepares mainly for defensive warfare.

Janissaries: The elite of the Attian military. They are recruited generally from the far northern regions of the country and beyond. Many of them are not Attian, but are outsiders who come from the harsher, more northern sections of the continent. The Janissaries are from these harsher regions because it is thought the harsh climate has allowed them greater skill and mobility. Their ranged weapons are muskets, while their close-ranged weapons are swords and axes, forged in the modern style.

Musketeers: Attian soldiers trained in the use of the musket. Though trained in the traditional tactics of muskeets, their speciality is “Attian tactics.” They know how to hide, ambush, and aim within the thick forests of Attis. Even when found, the enemy always has a hard time fighting back.

Pikemen: Infantrymen equipped with a pike, especially useful when defending against cavalry. They are often paired with musketeers and guard them from cavalry attacks. They form the bulk of the infantry alongside the musketeers.

Bowmen: Attian soldiers who do not have the luxury to have a musket. They fight with longbows and can in general aim more accurately than musketeers, but their destructive power is below that of musketeers. Like musketeers, they feel most comfortable when hiding within the forests. They are mostly a reserve force.

Demi-Lancer: Heavily-armored cavalry, who fight with lances. They lead charges.

Light Cavalry Lancers: Lightly-armored cavalry who have quick mobility, allowing them to harass and ambush the enemy.

Falconet: A light cannon commonly used by Attis. Far more mobile than heavier cavalry, it is used far more often by the Attian army.

Saker: A “medium” cannon, it must be dragged and carried to be taken anywhere. As a result, they are mainly used for defense.
