Magic and Murder

Genres:

School life, slice of life, murder mystery, fantasy and romance.

RP Size:

2-3 slots will be available.

General Idea:

Taking place at a highly regarded academy in the kingdom's capital city. The academy teaches those who have magical powers, how to control and hone them. Within the academy there are many students of varying capabilities and personalities. Those enrolled at the academy live there for six years before finally taking a graduation exam and get on with their lives. At least that was the plan for Retelia, a student who was found murdered overnight. Retelia was slated to take her graduation exam the following day, praised as a young genius who took only four years to reach the end of her education. The students either loved Retelia or loathed her.

With the academy's reputation on the line, it is imperative that answers are found quickly and quietly. The school calls upon a detective who rallies together a group of students to help the investigation. Together the group begins to dive into the secrets of the school and those who walk its halls. Everyone's a suspect as tensions rise and people begin to question their friends, teachers and lovers.

A Note About Magic:

Magic in this fantasy world is predetermined by birth. When a mother knows she is expecting, she will drink a special potion known as a Slixer. There are three varieties of Slixer: fire, water and air. The strength of a magic user depends on how much Slixer the pregnant mother drinks during pregnancy. There is no weakness or strength with the three elements and in order to activate their magical abilities, a user must use a summoning stone. Summoning stones contain the same elemental Slixer that now flows through their veins. Some mages are known to injure themselves and embed their own flesh with stones for more power but it tends to result in deadly consequences. Slixers and summoning stones are difficult to make and are pricey.

And it is possible for a mage to be able to use all three elements but those who can use two or all three, are considerably more weak. And over time, a mage will begin to lose their powers, the more they use them. And if they lose a lot of blood, their magic can literally bleed away. Lastly, it's impossible for a non-mage to gain elemental powers as the Slixer will poison their blood. Only mothers can help their growing fetus adjust and accept the potion over time.

A Note About Characters:

I will be GM'ing the staff, student body and detective. You will play as one of the main students in the investigation who is aiding the detective. Your character will somewhere in their late teens to early twenties. There is no age requirement or limit at the academy itself and people are able to join whenever they feel like it. But acceptable is tough to obtain and graduating is a very big feat. Your character can have one, two or three elements but should be someone who would be useful in an investigation. Like, they can't be the loner who has no friends, that wouldn't be useful at all. Maybe your character is on the school newspaper or the school gossip or something. Be creative.

Closing Notes:

I think this could be a fun combo. I want people to join who are eager to do something slice of life related, who like making posts about even the tiniest of details. I'm looking for people who are passionate about developing characters and interactions. I am not after long winded posts but I'm also not after just a paragraph or two. I think three to four is a good sweet spot to aim for. Yes, we will have posts of them in class, yes we will have posts of them eating together and training. There is little action here. If there is action, it's going to be rooted in the investigation. Think something like Death Note, this is more about putting a puzzle together than throwing fists and blasts of fire. The magic is an important element (aha) but it is not why I want people to join this story.

In all honesty I am using this to also try out my magic concept and my detective character but the setting and plot are something totally fresh and I'd love to make something fun with a small, friendly group who I can entertain with twists and turns.

Any questions or interest, let me know!

Also, better title is pending.

I think this sounds pretty dang interesting! One question right off of the bat: could you describe the differences between fire, water, and air magic? Is it just raw elemental, i.e. bursts of fire, blasts of air, etc.; or is there more nuance to it? Does a water magic user get to control ice and vapor? Can a fire magic user emanate/quash heat?

Those are just examples, of course. Just wondering how deep the magic system goes. If you can't reveal anything else, then I understand!

@TMS Prime It would be raw elemental power as I haven't considered the possibility of one-off skills like ice, mist, etc. But I would say it's something that could likely be developed in the story itself. I'm thinking to get those kinds of results, someone would need to know water and wind to make ice. Or someone would need air/wind and fire to get heat through the air. Or maybe some kind of stone is crafted into a device that adjusts the raw power like a scope or filter perhaps. I'd say I'd be pretty open as long as the power's intensity was thoughtful and not overkill.

Does that help? Probably not. I'm sorry! -cringe- But it's a concept I am open to but since the use of magic wasn't going to be too frequent I didn't want to dive too far down the rabbit hole.

Cool, that makes sense. Now that you've stated magic will probably take a backseat, I think leaving it simpler is for the best. Really like the concept behind it, though--the mother having drink Slixer and stuff is super interesting. So that satisfies the magicky worldbuilding side of me.

I'm still in, so hopefully you can drum up some more interest!

Thanks! :)

And me too, though if it's not the case, would you be down for a 1x1 if it comes to that?
