Today was the day. Conscription day, the day she would climb to the parapet, and risk her life. She would cross, she would make it across. Ran a hand through her short black hair, that hung to her chin... days ago it had hung to her waist. Her stomach was in knots, she stared down at shaking hands.

Starting on the back of her left palm and winding its way up her left arm was a shimmering cerulean reminder of why she should hate this day. Don't watch, Astrid. Listen to me, Close your eyes. Her oldest brother's words would forever haunt her words, because after them was only screams.

She had been too young to be crowded into that courtyard, and forced to watch the rebellion officers pay for their treason. She had been spared the torture of being sent to live under the wing of some cruel duke, or duchess to discipline the wrongness from her.

She was sent to live with the Duke Torild, whose wife couldnt bare children. She bore an unremarkable likeness to her parents. Pale skin, and wavy black hair. She was Astrid Solkapur, and her parents and siblings had all joined the rebellion. Astrid was a surprise child, her siblings a dozen years older than her.

While being given to a home that loved her, even if she wasn't truly a child of thiers... Astrid wasnt spared the weight of a rebellion relic. She wasnt accepted by her Navarrian peers, and since her childhood had left her soft... she wasnt really welcomed by the other marked children.

She hadnt been given the tools to survive the parapet, conscription, Basgiath... she knew this day would come, but she was completely unprepared. Her adopted parents had tried, and tried, and fought for her to be sent anywhere else. General fucking Sorrengail, had personally declined each and every attempt to get Astrid assigned to anything else.

Gods above. Dragons were both terrifying and beautiful. The golden eyes of the General's dragon had watched her... watched her with a piercing gaze, that Astrid wasnt sure she would ever forget.

That had been six months ago. Astrid had been sent to live with a close friend of her adopted father's, a rider named Lynd. Lynd was a blond man, whose hair was mostly grey... but he had two children who helped Astrid spar, and develop from the physical demands of conscription day.

Astrid had her small pack strapped to her shoulders. It was small, inside was some bandages, a small tin of ointment for healing, some Thern leaves to chew if her stomach wouldn't settle, and some dried beef.

She wore a tight fitting shirt of a dark navy, and some form fitting brown pants. Her feet were thankfully clad in boots with soles built for traction. Two long heavy daggers were sheathed in the small of her back.

She thanked Lynd and his children for helping her. Their faces were tight, and Astrid smiled through her nerves and asked them to write her adopted family.

She then made her way towards the stairs that led to the parapet. She tried to focus on her breath, trying to settle her nerves. She climbed the steps, she tried to stomach some of the dried beef from her pack, but ended up chewing the thern leaves instead.

When she reached the top of stairs... she felt her stomach leap, and twist. "Name?" A cool voice asked, but her eyes were glued on the treacherous bridge ahead of her.

"Dammit Astrid. Your name." His voice was cool, ofcourse he would know me on sight. Xaden... he stepped forward, his hand grabbing her shoulders. He looked her over, like someone would appraise livestock. "Atleast your dressed correctly. Arms out, breath, and walk quickly. Trust your balance." He said curtly, as the other rider opened their mouth again...

"A-Astrid Solkapur." She said quickly before they could speak.

I stepped onto the tiny bridge and drew in a deep breath. Atleast I had gotten here before that storm on the horizon.
