I created the PAIRS system for use in a text-based war game. I may eventually continue with that idea, but I want to throw this out there in the meantime. Would anyone be interested in a roleplay idea involving this system? If so, you would play the role of a human officer leading a group of PAIR Soldiers. Please substitute the word “army” below with either platoon (lieutenant), company (captain), battalion (lieutenant colonel), or brigade (colonel/brigadier general). I would prefer it if everyone in this RP were a Lieutenant leading a platoon of infantry. I could manage three or four rifle platoons and one armor platoon, and maybe even a combat engineer or sapper platoon. We would all be either light infantry or mechanized infantry.
I do have a few questions. If you are interested, answer with your preferences/ideas:
1. What primary plot would you be interested in? I am honestly not interested in one where a group of AI soldiers takes over the world. I believe Cyberdyne Technologies did that in Terminator. If a small group of AI soldiers exhibits glitches that result in bad/terrible/tragic incidents, that would be perfectly acceptable.
2. Should this RP happen on Earth sometime in the next 20 – 50 years? Or should it be on a fictional planet?
3. Should our opposition be a human/biological army on earth today? Or a similar AI-type army?
4. If we choose an alien planet, who has an idea for the opposition? Maybe some xenos-type race not yet mentioned?
5. If anyone would like to suggest improvements or nuances about the PAIRS Soldiers that are different, I am open to listening.
The PAIRS system.
You control an army of Proficient Artificially Intelligent Robotic Soldiers (PAIRS). These soldiers are called PAIR Soldiers or simply soldiers. Each soldier is composed of titanium and aluminum armor plating coated in Kevlar, hardened to protect against EMP attacks, which houses an intricate network of computer chips and circuitry to process a multitude of algorithms at a very rapid speed. The soldier has several microprocessors assigned to perform various tasks. It contains 64 Exabytes of storage space which is 1018 bytes x 64 or 64,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. Its operating system uses 128 petabytes of SDRAM or 128,000,000,000,000,000 bytes.
The PAIRS combatant can think independently but is programmed to perform as a member of a team. Most soldiers are required only to carry out instructions from their immediate supervisor who may be a PAIRS NCO or a human officer. PAIRS Non-Commissioned Officers are programmed to take orders from a human officer and then be enabled to interpret these orders and designate specific soldiers within their command to carry out the necessary tasks. As human soldiers train on specific collective tasks, the PAIRS combatant is programmed with these same collective tasks. Every PAIRS soldier is programmed to perform any or all tasks performed by PAIRS soldiers within the Brigade Combat Team (BCT). An Infantryman could be a maintainer or intelligence analyst tomorrow in theory.
The AI Robotic Warrior can share information through Bluetooth technology that enables them to know where others are located and what task they are performing. Their human platoon leader can then establish parameters on which soldier in his platoon they are supposed to pay attention to. When a 10-man squad is performing a collective task, the sixth soldier must know what the other nine are doing and so forth. This process allows them to share this data and be aware of their location and what they are doing. This reduces the need for verbal communication, enhancing sound discipline. The Robotic soldier is also able to move silently without stepping on dry twigs or leaves making a rustling sound. The soldiers can communicate verbally with their human leaders when necessary. Each unit is equipped with one of three hundred sixty-five computer-generated voice textures including both female and male sounds. None have been programmed with a sense of humor. They have internal radios and can send verbal communications over a radio without making a sound at the signal’s point of origin. They can also send digital communications to their human leadership which the officer receives on a simple tablet or Android mounted on the forearm of their offhand.
Any intelligence collected by individual soldiers in the field is immediately uploaded onto a network accessible by PAIR Soldiers in the S2 or intelligence sections at the battalion and brigade levels. The AI Soldiers who work in the intelligence sections can then analyze data/information collected and formulate Enemy Most Probable Courses of Action (EMPCA). This information is then immediately shared with the human officers at each level to prepare them for what may happen next. Even artificially intelligent intelligence soldiers can make mistakes, they are not 100% foolproof in their analysis and projected EMPCA reports. More often than not, they are spot-on correct with their analysis.
These soldiers do not require food or sleep to operate. They can conduct 50-mile road marches without feeling fatigued but will require maintenance of their circuitry once the road march is complete. They move at a maximum rate of 8 KPH (5 MPH) on foot while walking or can move at a double time speed of 16 KPH (10 MPH) for no more than five miles (8 kilometers). There are maintenance soldiers programmed to perform maintenance on their fellow soldiers. If a PAIR soldier performs at the maximum speed for an extended period, there is a chance they may break down and require maintenance. They will be non-mission capable (NMC) at this time.
The PAIR soldiers are assigned vehicles in some units. These may include Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFV), Main Battle Tanks (MBT), Utility Trucks, Cargo Trucks, VTOL aircraft, fixed-wing aircraft (UCAV), Self-Propelled Howitzers (SP) and Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS), and more.
Individual PAIR soldiers are equipped with a carbine or rifle chambered in 7.62mm (.308 Cal). This cartridge is used in the personal weapon and machine gun used at the squad and platoon level as well as those mounted on Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFV). The PAIR soldiers can also launch 40mm grenades from a small grenade launcher mounted over the left shoulder. Each soldier is equipped to be either a Rifleman or a Grenadier. The soldier can carry twelve 20-round magazines for their personal weapon or 240 rounds of 7.62mm ball ammo. The squad machine gunners carry 800 rounds of 7.62mm belt-linked ammunition. Each soldier carries four 40mm High Explosive Grenades which can be auto-reloaded in their shoulder-mounted launcher. The anti-armor gunner carries two Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) equipped with a thermal sight to be used against AFVs. The ATGM has a maximum effective range of 2000 meters. It uses an Infrared guidance system that is synchronized with the AI soldier’s optics.
