Hey man, is it too late to join the RP? If not, can I have a character who scammed his way on board as a way to get out of a prison sentence?

Some slots were given to people based on merit of skill or education in the development of the project, or by a general lottery. I'll be interested to see how you slip in. :)

My brain for the life of me doesn't want to cooperate to think up a character that pleases me, so I'm going to have to withdraw my previous statement. Have fun with it though guys!

Adrian accepted!

So we have a Hunter, an Engineer, a Spiritual Person, and a Biologist. Interesting. :)

Tomorrow (Tuesday) I have phase two of a job interview to tend to and then work in the evening, so I will hope to start the IC on Wednesday evening! :) I'm in Central time. If anyone else still wants to submit a character, now's the time!

Well, a biologist to a certain extent. Adrian's thesis was on large scale farming of Mars and his academic and professional focus has been on botany.
Anyway, huzzah acceptance!

Wonderlandalli,
would you not accept more characters once the role play gets going? I'm assuming there's an X number of colonists that will kinda be NPCs for the duration of the role play, correct?

Now, the way I am going to do this: as we move on, I will post some info here you can defer to in your writing. I hate when someone writes a narrator and every following player basically re-writes what was already said. If the person before you already pointed out something, feel free to assume readers know its there now and skip it if it's unnecessary to your experiences. So I am going to give you the opportunity to take info and use it, or skip some details. That way, I hope that not everyone's post will read the same way (only from their own character's perspective.) In addition, you may also ADD details especially as you go exploring a space, because we're developing a world here and it's going to have an endless variety of new things to look at and touch and probably run in the opposite direction of post haste...

You don't have to make each post a novel - just make it quality writing. I don't mind stopping at just one paragraph but please skip one liners. If you want to write dialogue with someone you may want to do it by PM then one of you make a post.

So for the first chapter...

As the intro said, you're awakening from the cryo chamber and there is a voice urging you to evacuate. You've been in stasis for 30 years, so perhaps you don't move so quickly or perceive what's around you so well just yet. Think of being yanked from a very hard sleep. Red emergency lights flash, and other chambers are opening about you. Maybe they're alive, maybe they're not. Life support is failing, the air is old. There seems to be engine failures or something else very tech and probably pretty damn critical. You have to find the escape pods following a trail of emergency lighting on the floor (like an airplane today has), down the cylindrical ship. They are between the chambers and the storage facility. The storage (where crates of other items you brought are) is sealed shut by the emergency protocols. You can not get in there. You're going to have to give up on that and get into the pod, and hope that it lands you somewhere safely. Your pods have windows. You can see out when you are in it, and pods have the capacity of a dozen people each. Do try to remember your pack at the base of your cryo chamber before you leave. Pods have limited fuel and have an auto homing system meant to find the nearest planet and land on not-water if possible (also not lava, cuz, you know, fail.) They will not land near each other, as they assume possible destruction or failure of other pods and will likely drift very far from each other as they make their way down. You will not be able to zip around in this thing later.

So that's your reference info for chapter one. Good luck, and hang on to your towels. I'm going to start setting my post now, but if you post before me in IC that's fine, I won't be mad. I don't want to set a particular posting order, just try not to be That Guy that dominates the postings and overrides others! :)

It's been pointed out to me I never set a year. I just kind of imagined the distant future lol. Well, we have the Mars One project proposed for 2023. I assume it may take a generation or two to work out a successful colony. Then we would have to develop better transit ability. If it traveled at 10x the speed of light those thirty years of sleep traveled 300 light years using some form of space warping tech, according to my knows-more-than-me-about-Star-Trek-tech husband. So right now that's mechanically impossible, though we have theories for it. This is not a Star Trek rp though, so I'm thinking three generations from now? 2100's? Assuming some amazing technological feat was developed? They definitely had had leaps and bounds in energy and environmental technology, with the solar powered and water powered "suburbadomes" springing up all over the world.

"The distant future, the year 2000." lol

Also a reminder, escape pods will drift, let's all get into the same pod. :)

Sorry about being fashionably late with this :P
Name: Ayla von Dahl
Age: 28
Gender: Female

Appearance:
Medium-dark skin, black hair, round, amber eyes. Approximately 5'8" with a build that could be athletic with more physical activity. Ayla's father was from Austria, her mother was from India, and she grew up in East Coast Canada, along with her twin sister, Emma. A vehicular accident as a teenager destroyed her left arm, and she now has a cybernetic prosthesis. The base of the prosthesis can get signals from the nerves in her shoulder, and the arm moves with reasonable dexterity (both twins were left-handed before the accident; Ayla now has better dexterity in her right), but it essentially runs on specialized batteries, and the contacts between the arm and the base need to be cleaned regularly.

Pack contents:
A few changes of clothes including decent hiking boots, personal hygiene items, her left arm with cleaning kit, several spare rechargeable power cells for the arm, solar charger, tablet (with cartography-specific apps, as well as the guidebooks for Spera in digital format, some sparse entertainment media, etc.).

Did you store anything in the cargo bay?
Telescope and surveying equipment, additional clothing.

Skills:
Cartography, both satellite and ground.

Education:
Master's Degree, dual major in Digital Media and Xenogeography

What was your reason for joining the colonists?
Officially, to continue work in mapping the planet's surface in detail. Unofficially, she's been the geekier sister since they were children (though not by much), always into sci-fi.

How did you get get accepted?
Emma, who had already been accepted, pulled a few strings to get her sister's employment application accepted.

What did you do before this?
She helped piece together the satellite images that became the map of the planet featured in the guidebooks.
Name: Emma von Dahl
Age: 28
Gender: Female

Appearance:
Except for the artificial arm, Ayla and Emma are identical twins.

Pack contents:
A few changes of clothes (including the hiking boots her sister convinced her to pack), personal hygiene items, tablet, solar charger, portable networking and file storage equipment, basic electronics repair tools.

Did you store anything in the cargo bay?
Collapsable solar panels, high-gain antennas, portable radio equipment, the remainder of her clothing, the remainder of ger electronics repair tools.

Skills: Network and communication specialist

Education: Master's Degree in Computer Science, Bachelor's degree in electronics engineering.

What was your reason for joining the colonists?
Even a technician can have a thirst for exploration. Also, like her sister, she has always been a bit of a sci-fi geek.

How did you get get accepted?
As someone who had helped design many of the networking and communications systems currently being used on their transport ship, Emma was a natural choice for the crew's electronics technician.

What did you do before this?
Assisted in designing the communications equipment on the ship.

Erm...so I'm waiting for Marx to respond at this point, but I'm assuming that we're not going to make it down to the cargo hold to get the other stuff based on the other posts so far--unless, ya know, we want our characters to die.

But, a thought: is the main ship going to land SOMEWHERE on the planet? So would it be a trip/part of the plot to go finding it?

@Tigre: Yes, it's quite possible that they would at least know of eachother, and perhaps even crossed paths at some point.

So I had half a sheet done when you opened this thread and I decided to scrap it when I wasn't sure I'd have the time to keep up. I'm wondering if that was a bad move now. The character was a doctorate student in Visual Anthropology to studied how cultures expressed themselves through symbols and artwork. He was also an artist who'd had a handful of notable shows, and deeply interested in his Afro-Taíno roots. It was a character type I haven't done before, part rockstar ego, but educated and humbled by his own work.

Does this sound like something this RP could use?
