"I worry about the rest of my siblings. I worry that without me there they'll grow hungry and take food from the Capitol. You and I both know what that'll mean for them." Sequoia closed his eyes at those words. He didn't have a family...but he remembered what it was like. What it felt like to worry for them, to feel that pain in the bottom of your heart, the constant nagging in the back of your mind. He knew all too well what that worry felt like, how it never went away. And now, she had even more cause to be concerned. Here she was, about to find herself in the Hunger Games. Slowly opening his bright green eyes, Sequoia hung his head, shaking it slowly. He didn't know what he could say to his old friend, couldn't find words that didn't sound trite or stupid...lies that people tell themselves when there are no words of truth to ease pain. So he stood there, letting the moments of silence pass between them until she turned, addressing their mentor. "He's right. We need your help. Sponsors. How do we go about with that? Surely there's advice you can give us there?"

Interested in hearing this answer himself, Sequoia turned his gaze to Birch, awaiting his response. He wanted to hear it, he wanted to know just how they could manage that. Sure, he'd grown up watching the Hunger Games all his life. It was required, of course. But...watching it and actually living it were two very different things. He hadn't the slightest idea what to do, how he might help either himself or Willow to return home. So he fixated his gaze upon the man who'd won it all--the same man who mentored every other district 7 tribute that came before them. Now it was their turn. One of us will come home! Sequoia thought, gritting his teeth in determination, eyes narrowing into an arctic glare. "Just attract the Capitol's attention. Appearance is especially important in the early stages, something that can be discussed further with your stylists once we arrive in the Capitol."

Sequoia frowned at their mentor's words, wondering just how appearance would do a damn thing for them. They were going to be trees, after all. Nothing special, nothing outstanding, unless you counted ridiculous and stupid outstanding. That was never the way one wanted to stand out in a crowd, and Sequoia somehow doubted that the Hunger Games were an exception to that. He was about to speak up, but Willow beat him to it. "Appearance? Well I don't have much going for me there. Those stylists better know what they're doing. Somehow I don't think being dressed as a tree will do me much good either." Sequoia broke eye contact with Birch to gaze at willow, a slight grin crossing his face. He nodded slowly, shaking his head quickly. "I'm telling you right now, I'd rather be naked then be dressed as a friggin tree!" he remarked, snorting. "Oh no. I heard they hired a better team this year. Apparently the Capitol got tired of seeing the tree look on all the District 7 tributes."

Sequoia whirled around in shock, staring with wide eyes at Aelius in disbelief. "Seriously?!" he asked, startled. "You mean...we won't be stuck looking like the laughing stock of the districts then??" Sequoia turned back towards Willow, a wide smile crossing his face and his eyes brightening up a bit. "Did you hear that Willow, we won't have to be trees this year!!!" He clapped his old friend on the back, momentarily excited--until he remembered why they were talking about appearances in the first place. The smile fading from his face as fast as vapor might dissipate in a swift breeze, he lowered his gaze to the floor. He let out a low sigh, crossing his arms over his chest, silent once again.

Attract the Capitol's attention. It was such a simple piece of advice, yet Willow somehow knew it was bound to be more difficult than it sounded. Somehow the Capitol seemed like a crowd that was easily entertained, but there was 22 other tributes out there. That was quite some serious competition and tree costumes were so unforgettable those would make District 7 go down for sure. Aelius had promised there was better stylists at least, but how much better? Would they actually have the guts to get more creative? Certainly there were themes they could play off besides trees.

Despite the current atmosphere, Willow managed to let out a laugh at Sequoia's comment. Naked? That for sure ironically would attract attention more than the same old tree costumes would, but certainly it would never fly with the Capitol audiences. They wanted to see costumed tributes and that showed with how elaborate the parade costumes often were. The fact that there was apparently new and more competent stylists managed to even provide minor excitement. Willow wanted to see what sort of magic they could pull off. "Yes. That's good news for us both. Maybe we'll actually be memorable. I have siblings to get home to..."

As the two tributes discussed costumes Birch began eying them both. He was definitely an eager one, but hopefully it would work to either of the tributes' benefit. "Yes, I can wield and axe just like most of District 7 can. I presume Sequoia here can as well." Willow remarked, quickly turning her attention to him. Axe wielding. One of the skills that almost all District 7 children picked up from a young age. It had been something Willow never truly intended for herself, but fate said otherwise the day her brother had been taken from her. At this very moment she was glad for those circumstances for once; if things had gone her way then there was a pretty strong guarantee that the games would take her too. Now she knew she had a fighting chance.

Willow's comments seemed to sit well with Birch as he seemed to nod in approval before taking a seat. "I expected as much. That is what most expect from our district though so I suggest working on an extra skill or two in the training centre." He advised, quickly realizing that District 7 was one of the more "predictable" districts as far as skillset went. Lumberjacks. Axes. Almost everybody made the connection quite quickly and thought of ways to exploit it. Given her crafting skills, Willow figured that she'd be able to wield a small blade of sorts, but she'd have to wait and see. There were so many variables to factor in such as which sort of weapons would be available in both the training centre and the arena.

Sequoia nodded as Willow remarked that she was sure he could wield an axe, like her. He was damn good at it--he could throw them, he could hack away with em like a weapon. He knew his way around an axe, that was for sure. Being an outcast at the orphanage, not really social with anyone, he had to do *something* to entertain himself. Playing with an axe he'd nicked and hidden underneath a loose floorboard had been his main entertainment for years of his life. He listened as Birch suggested they each learn to use other skills while in training. He glanced over at Willow, wondering if she'd drawn the same conclusion he had; that they needed something to surprise their competition. Who didn't know that District 7 were exceptional with axes? Every tribute to ever come from the distract was. That was like districts 1, 2, and 4 creating a career pack together; it was completely expected, you just knew that is WAS going to happen.

He began to consider what other skill he might learn. He'd watched the televised Hunger Games enough to know that there were a very wide variety of skills to choose from indeed. From using other weapons, to trapping, to survival--there were far more skills to choose than there was time to learn them all. What other weapon could he learn to use? A sword, perhaps? A bow or spear? Sequoia began to have serious doubts about this. He'd never so much as touched anything even remotely like a weapon besides a lumberjacks axe. How could he learn the finer points of archery or swordplay or something else? What hope did he have, really, to stand against the Career pack? Even if Willow fought by his side, that was two against six minimum. And Careers often liked to bring in another tribute or two who had basic survival skills or something technical to offer....

Technical. Sequoia's eyes narrowed as he delved deeper into thought. He needed to learn to use a weapon besides an axe, but he also needed to learn a technical skill. First aid? Plant identification? Survival? Trapping? He wasn't sure at this point, but he needed something to help him and Willow to survive in the arena. He blinked, shocked at his own chain of thought. Willow...he was assuming she'd even be willing to ally with him. And why? She'd just revealed earlier that she felt she barely knew him anymore. Why would she be so keen to ally with him? She wanted to get back to her family, and Sequoia had no family to get back to. Would she ally with him....did she even want to? The only reason she might is because they were old friends, the BEST of friends before they were ripped apart by the Capitol. But Sequoia...isn't that reason to stay away, to keep distant? Because you're old friends, maybe she doesn't want you so close...because of what may happen, he thought to himself. He swallowed, the idea of Willow standing against him nearly too much to bear.

He let out an audible sigh, and turned to gaze at his old friend. Her brown hair and dark eyes, the slender face that used to light up when she'd smile. He missed their childhood together, the memories they shared. He missed her damn it, and he would never forgive the Capitol for taking her. Maybe if they'd never been seperated in the first place, they wouldn't be here now, about to be thrust into battle with 22 other tributes, all vying for that title of "victor." Shaking his head slowly, he leaned against the wall as the train thundered down the tracks. "Hey Willow...I think we ought to learn some kind of survival skill too," he said, unwilling to keep his idea a personal choice. It would be to her benefit too if she picked up a skill like that. "I mean, it's not like we'll be in with the careers, we're district 7. We'll probably end up having to survive on our own." Sequoia paused for a second, making eye contact with Willow very briefly, before lowering his gaze to the floor. "Umm. Always presuming you want to...be allies in the arena...." He let his voice trail off, unable to gaze into the face of his old friend, unable to face rejection if it should come. He wanted to reconnect with her, he supposed, to become as close as they had been years ago. And if he was really lucky, it would be either her or him that would be up on stage at the end of all this, crowned victor, and watching their own highlight real of blood and death.

Willow quickly realized Birch was right. District 7 was always associated with their unmatched axe wielding skills. Despite its usefulness in the arena, it also put the district at a sort of disadvantage; who didn't expect the District 7 kids to come running at them with an axe? The more urban districts in particular didn't have that problem. They seemed to have the element of surprise on their side, considering they could pick up skills in almost anything once in training as none of them had any real previous experience with weaponry. "He has a point..." Willow uttered as she continued pondering Birch's advice. There was much to choose from, but naturally she would be inclined to go for whatever was most like an axe. Still, that too could potentially be revealing. Not to mention that strong tributes were almost always targeted first.

While Willow tried to implement a strategy for herself Sequoia seemed concerned about something. She already had suspicions to what it was too. Despite their reunion, he knew what being reaped meant. 24 tributes and only one victor. At least one of them was not making it out of that arena. Sure, they had managed to last this long without each other, but it was difficult to imagine having to do it again, and permanently. At least Sequoia didn't have family who would mourn him, but Willow did. Every day she feared any of them taking out tessarae and being reaped into the Capitol's sadistic game. As long as she was around it had been something she prevented, but what if she didn't return from here? What if the family started going hungry? Realizing the severity of the situation and that there was no way out of it Willow leaned back and let out a sigh.

Sequoia's next words managed to restore some sense of motivation to Willow, however. An alliance? It seemed so early to make such proposals, but it was common for district partners to ally anyway. If anything though, a District 7 alliance could potentially keep one of them alive. It was really the thought of having to kill Sequoia that settled in the back of Willow's mind. Way too often that sort of thing tended to happen in alliances in the latter stages of the games. At this point though it was a valuable strategic move and Willow knew that Birch too would probably agree. "Us in an alliance? You know it." She managed to let out a small chuckle as she stared directly into Sequoia's eyes.

Naturally, Sequoia had managed to bring up another equally as excellent point. Survival. It too was crucial to the games and Willow quickly realized that, despite her experience with an axe, she knew little when it came to survival. She couldn't decide if it had just never occurred to her or if she just never bothered to learn much about it. It seemed to her that the former was much more likely. As long as she did her part, Willow knew that her family managed to make it by. In fact, it had been that which had essentially forced her to drop her former craft. It had been a money-maker for sure, but upon Aston's death she just couldn't do it anymore as the lumber still managed to bring in even more. It had saddened her to give up something she cared so deeply for, but family came first. It was that sort of bond that perhaps would have prompted her to even volunteer for any of her siblings had they been reaped. Of course that was never to be as by the time they came of age she'd either be dead or already living the high life off in Victor's Village.

"I think you're right, but certainly somebody may be looking for an ally. If not, then...well...I guess we just have each other." Willow responded as she pondered the whole survival situation herself. If they were to be a team then certainly they could compliment each other nicely with different skillsets. Again, Birch was the "go to" man. "What do you suggest? Maybe each of us should learn something different?" She turned towards the burly man and began questioning him. Surprisingly, he was now making himself out to be less intimidating, but perhaps that was simply because he now had a sort of ideal just who he was dealing with. Two capable tributes. Surely District 7 would be strong this year, but of course there was no way of truly knowing until they were thrust into the arena in about a week's time.

Sequoia felt his heart stop as the seconds drew on between him asking for an alliance and Willow’s reply. The more time that passed, the more his mind began racing with “what if” questions. What if she says no? What if she doesn’t want to be in an alliance? What if she doesn’t even like you anymore? What if she tells you right now that she’d just as soon see you as little as possible? What if, what if, what if. Just when he thought his mind was going to have a meltdown, Willow gave him a smile, saying “Us in an alliance? You know it!” Sequoia let out a sigh of relief, the worry melting away. For the first time in years, he felt he had his friend back. It would be almost like old times, them being together….except during old times, they didn’t have to kill 23 other tributes. In old times, they weren’t fighting for their lives in the same sense that they were now.

Still, to have her by his side...He held her gaze for several moments, thinking about what it would be like...in the arena. And those thoughts turned to who might be victor. Say it came down to him or her, being victor. Could he actually let her die? Could he actually stand by and let some other tribute kill her...really? He already knew the answer to that, in his heart. Just as he already knew he could never be the one to take her life in a million years. And what if you are the last two? The thought invaded Sequoia’s mind like the beetles that often chewed their way into the trunks of the trees, rendering the wood all but useless. IF she stood with him at the end, the final two...then what? He gazed into those eyes of hers, and felt pain then...like a stab through the heart. One way or another, one of them was going to be dead by the time this was all said and done. The best they could hope is that the other was living life as a Victor.

When it came right down to it, Sequoia knew in his heart that she deserved to go home. She had a family, she had loved ones to return to. What did he have? A fucking orphanage, that’s what. An orphanage he didn’t even damn like, and nobody he got along with. Nobody to miss him when he was gone. If he died, he’d just be another tribute dead, with no real repercussions beyond his own loss of life. If Willow died….what would become of her family? How much pain would her death cause? How much heartache? Maybe even more deaths, as she’d not be there to support her family anymore. But I’d be there. And I would… the thought entered into his mind. Yes. If anything happened to Willow, he would make sure her family was well taken care of, if he managed to survive. But he had a choice to make. Himself, or her? His own life, a life that had less meaning if lost, but was his own...or Willow’s, whose death would hurt people, possibly cause even more death?

Sequoia sighed, finally breaking his gaze away from Willow, and facing Birch. He had a choice to make, but that would come later. For now, he had to focus. To make sure that ONE of them made it home. Because when the smoke cleared, and the dust settled, at the end of these games he knew that he wanted a District victor, be it him or her. And he needed to work to that goal, to keep one of them alive. Which one, could be decided later. For now, he had to focus on a District victory. As Willow asked Birch what they should study for survival, and if they should each pick different skills, Sequoia turned to their mentor, a hard look in his eyes, while he awaited the man's answer.
