I don't have an awful lot of work put into this idea but if it has interest I'll flesh it out.
What if the conjunction of the spheres happened in our world during World War One? I have more but unless this draws a little attention I'm not going to bother writting it all out.

Before the United States could join in the war in Europe, the Conjunction tears the world apart at the seams. The US retreats back into itself in order to figure out how to deal with the sudden appearance of monsters and magic in our world. Europe continues to burn and the bodies continue to stack up. Necrophages prowl no mans land and wraiths inhabit the desolate and empty trenches of past battles. The war that should've ended was prolonged by a massive amount. The Conjunction occured 10 years ago and the war started 15 years ago. The war has lost much of its intensity as men are simply unable to charge across no mans land and industry has been incredibly dampened by the need to simply arm as many humans as possible.
