Eric tossed his bag of clothes in the back of the old station wagon he'd had since sophomore year, pushing aside some boxes of water and snacks so Sara would have room for her stuff, which looked to be enough for a month, let alone a week. She was hugging her mom and saying goodbyes as he hauled one of her bags up, his eyes involuntarily looking her over. God she has the best bod in the entire county, what I wouldn't give to... he thought, his young adult mind wandering to softer and more intimate places, however a firm hand on his shoulder shocked him back into reality.

"So sport, what do you and my little princess have in mind for this little road trip?" her dad said, an edge to his voice that made Eric's mind go racing with nerves.

"We're going to uh...look for ghosts and explore some of the tourist attractions in other counties, Sir." Eric spluttered out as he regained his composure "You know, research and all that."

"Sir? C'mon Eric, you know you don't have to call me that. You've been around Sara and our family since your parents moved here with you when you were a kid." Sara's dad laughed as he slapped Eric on the back, grinning as he headed back to give Sara one more hug. "I know you two will have lots of fun, just make sure to write back when you two get famous for finding ghosts, y'hear?"

"Yes Sir, er...I mean, Don." Eric caught himself, waving as he opened the passenger side door for Sara. "You ready to go, Princess?"

Sara finished moving everything from her bed to the suitcase laid out on her bed, here fingers running over a few pieces of unsavory under garments and wondering if she should even bring them. To wear them meant that her and Eric might finally move past the friend zone and the thought of that scared the hell out of her. However, the disappointment of bringing them and not wearing them would be worse. She picked them up and tossed the scrapes of lace in her bag and growled at her silliness.

This trip was about seeking and searching for the unknown, not flossing her ass with an enticement that might end with massive amounts of awkwardness. Zipping up her bag she reached down and grabbed two other ones and hauled them outside where Eric was waiting, her father already talking with him.

She gave her mother a quick hug and jogged down to the car, carrying the smallest of the bags. "Daddy, would you grab my bags for me? So super heavy." She bounced her hair a little and smiled sweetly at him, the older man melting and chuckling as he walked away.

She looked at Eric and squealed with excitement, a quick hug and she was slipping into the passengers side of the station wagon, a lovely smile on her mouth as she nodded. "Hells yes I'm ready to go. Let's drive until we get to the first place, not stopping for sleep if possible." She reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a map that they had marked a few years before, planning to do this forever. A condom fell out on her shoe and she laughed softly picking it up and throwing it at him. "No raincoats for this trip, bebe... it's suppose to be a dry spell."

Eric gave Sara a quick squeeze when she hugged him, finding it difficult not to feel more energized just by her own excitement. In a flash, she had slid into the passenger seat, giving input on their trip details. He hurried over to the drivers side, quickly closing the door and starting the car as he replied.

"Shouldn't be much of a problem, being that our first stop is the old mansion over in the next county. Thought it'd be good to get the cheesy tourist spots out of the way as quickly as possible." He replied, a sense of exhilaration shooting through him as they got under way. Eric turned to her as she shuffled through his glove box, but just as he was about to continue, one of his condoms came tumbling out onto Sara's shoe.

"Oh shit, I forgot those were in there!" he said, flushing slightly as she tossed it his way. Laughing he reached into his lap where it had landed and put it in his pocket, casting a mischievous glance at Sara as he spoke. "Well, you know how the weather can be around here, always good to be prepared for whatever comes along!"

He let out his laughter as she punched him playfully on the arm, relief washing over him as he figured she thought he was just making a joke and not that he was secretly hoping that the only floating sheets they came across would be those on a bed. Eric pushed the thoughts aside, focusing on the road as he checked the map to make sure he was heading the right way.

"So, you excited for graduation? Only a month away now...crazy." Eric said, trying to steer the potential conversation away from the previous topic as much as possible.

Sara chuckled softly at Eric's cute reply and touched the map at their current location, dragging it along the determined route that they'd be taking and stopping just in Chesterton at the old Vermil's Mansion. "Do you really think we'll find anything?" The thought of not finding something caused her chest to tighten with a bit of worry. They could've gone anywhere for their senior trip and yet Eric had decided to let her choose.

A smile touched her mouth as she reached out and squeezed his thigh and bounced in her seat a little. "You're best friend a girl could ever have. Seriously." She turned up the tunes on the radio and shook her long brown hair, dancing a little as they flew down the back country roads. "I'm so stoked about graduation. I honestly never thought we'd get here, but college next year!"

She gazed over at him and watched him for a minute. "You sure you don't want to join me at Champion State? Going outta town and away from all of us is going to suck hard you know?" She listened to him before turning back to the map, her fingers dancing along the red and blue lines as her imagination ran wild with possibilities for the mansion. The ride was only a couple hours and they'd be there. She sat back in her seat, slipped off her shoes and put her bare feet on the dash board, her cute white shorts barely covered her assets, but brought the lovely tan of summer out on her long legs.

"If you get scared in the mansion I'll hold your hand, k?" She giggled and changed the station, the turn off for their first stop just up ahead.

"At Vermil's Mansion? Probably not, there's always people there ever since it became a historic landmark or whatever." Eric replied, his mind still not full set on just the trip ahead of them. "Who know's though? Maybe the ghosts have been waiting for a girl like you to come waltzing through their door! Haha, I kid I kid."

Suddenly Sara put her hand on his thigh and gave him a warm compliment that caught him a bit off guard, smiling back at her while shooting a playful wink, the only reply he could make as he pulled into the surprisingly busy traffic heading out of town. Only a few moments passed before she asked him a question about college, a topic they and their friends had been having since he said he wouldn't be attending courses at Champion State, but instead would be entering into a film program at Corporal Junior College.

"You know that CS doesn't have much in the way of theatre or film making programs, which is the only thing I really want to major in. I'll only be a little over an hour away, we'll still be able to meet up and stuff." he said through a smile, trying his best to avoid this taking the more sullen turn it usually led to when discussing his decision with her. However, she seemed content with his answer and went back to looking at the map, kicking back as she did so.

He couldn't help checking out her long tan legs as she stretched them onto the dashboard, a slight shiver running down his spine as he imagined being between them, looking down on her as he claimed her as his. The thought was torn for just a moment as Sara suddenly switched the radio station, a saving grace as he realized he had become a little heated at his own imagination. Hitting the AC up a bit, Eric looked out at one of the turn off signs by the side of the road, "Vermil Mansion & History Museum next exit" read out in bold white letters against the bright green sign. Making his way down the exit, Eric slowed the car, pointing a finger forward as he pulled into a rather large and ornate parking lot.

"There it is, in all it's old creepy glory. Just like our math teacher, Mr. Johns, the one with the glass eye and awesome convertible." he said with a tone that was meant to sound serious, but oozed with sarcasm.

There weren't many cars in the parking lot, only a dozen or so, though that was to be expected being they had arrived at 4 in the afternoon which was only 3 hours from closing. He parked near the front by the "Authentic Vermil Gift Shop", at least that's what the sign claimed it to be, reaching underneath his seat to get the steering wheel lock his father had gotten him into the habit of using. Though God know's who'd want to steal his old piece of shit station wagon.

Once the lock was in place he hopped out of the car and not-so-smoothly slid across the hood, opening Sara's door before she had gotten her shoes back on.

"Here we are, mon cheri, your mansion!" Eric said in a horribly faux Frenchman accent, bowing and extending his arms like a butler from an old movie.

Sara laughed softly to herself, her long chestnut locks being tousled by her head moving from side to side in mild humor at Eric trying to slide across the hood. His ass got stuck about half way and he had to 'scooch' himself along. She slid out of the car with the grace not afforded him and tugged at the bottom of her shorts, her light pink v-neck soft and comfy for their long evening of searching out the dead. The sound of her white keds moving across the gray top lot.

She chuckled at his antics and slipped her fingers into her small pockets as they walked toward the house. It wasn't nearly as imposing as the nighttime pictures had made it out to be, but her hope was to still be there at night. She looked back at Eric and wagged her eyebrows.

"I'm thinking that we should sneak off into the woods just to the left of the house." She moved beside him and grabbed one of his arms, her other hand extended as she pointed out the path. "Lets go over there and find a trail to get lost in and then when it's dark we'll sneak back in the house and do what we came to do."

Very few people were milling about, the place almost seemingly closed and yet the sign made it clear that the Vermil Mansion & History Museum was open for visitors and fans alike until 6:30 that evening. She slid her hand into his and walked casually toward the path, the two of them looking like a young couple out for an afternoon stroll and nothing more. "Do you think the rumors about this place are true?"

She stepped off the asphalt, running her fingers through her long hair and turning to let her amber eyes move across the planes of Eric's face while her thoughts pulled and tugged at remembrance. "The Vermil family was in charge of an orphanage on the edge of town, the mother and father taking turns staying over night because back in the 30's people really didn't think too much on the idea of working with children. Too many other things going on I guess. Anyway, the original orphanage burnt down after Clarence Miller came to stay there."

She looked up at the sky as the sun touched her skin and warmth spread throughout her, her fingers squeezing his as excitement and joy touched the edge of her awareness. "After it burnt down the Vermil's decided to just bring everyone to live in there house. Eight children total including Clarence. Mr. Vermil wasn't very keen on bringing Clarence with them because he believed the boy was involved in the original fire, but he was by far the cutest kid in the bunch and Mrs. Vermil couldn't see him doing hard."

Pausing only briefly as they reached the lake, Sara released Eric's hand and climbed up on a large rock that sat sturdy at the edge of a dark blue lake, the wind causing the waves to dance in performance. She turned to face him, motioning for him to join her. "I'm thinking the woman was right though, because it wasn't long after they moved all the kids in that strange things began to happen and those that were involved weren't around to tell the story. Only one left standing besides the couple was Clarence and he went quite mad." She looked up to the house and smiled with wicked intent.

"I can't wait to go in there. If you get scared," she looked down at Eric and laughed, "I'll hold your hand, k?"
