In 2013, a fungal infection called the Cordyceps Brain Infection broke out as a pandemic across the United States and the world. After a brief struggle to eradicate the virus hope was lost as to ever finding a cure as it spread like wildfire.
Quarantine zones were set up as a way to protect the ones who were still living, and to keep out the dead. These Quarantine Zones became military states. Rules were harsh and enforced firmly. Very few elderly and young children survived life inside what was supposed to be a safe haven.
Now the BQZ (Boston Quarantine Zone) has become like many other zones : divided by factions that each follow different ideals. But the military still rules, and they make sure no one forgets this fact.
This is our world now.
This is the world you must survive in.

Here's my character sheet.
Name: Matthew Schafer

Short History: Matt was only 4 when the world went to hell. Despite his parents being suburbanites with very little outdoors experience, Matt and his family managed to survive for nearly six years out in the wilderness of the Midwest. When Matt was only ten years old, both his parents went out to look for supplies and never came back.
After nearly a week of living on his own in their family tent, a strange man came walking through. He was a giant, with a large woodcutters axe and a blank look in his eyes. He spoke very little, but he called himself Karl, and he claimed to be a follower of the old ways. Matt thought Karl was mentally handicapped, but he decided to follow the giant towards the east coast. Karl told Matt about the ways of Karl's forefathers. Karl believes that Ragnarok, the End of Times, was upon the world. Matt tried to make himself useful, and Karl liked him enough to teach him axe-work.
One day, when Matt was still a young teen, Karl quietly passed away in his sleep. Since then, Matt has been making his way across the American Northeast, surviving as best as he could.

This two-handed axe belonged to Karl, but is now Matt's weapon of choice. It is fairly heavy, but Karl taught him how to control the axe's weight and swing it effectively.
Glock 9mm: A gun that Matt's father had given while Matt was still with his parents.
Mossberg 500: A pump action shotgun with a collapsible stock and a sling. Holds 8 shells plus one in the chamber.
Other Equipment: A sturdy coat, some food and a half a bottle of painkillers
