Bleed & Burn

Elemental Etchings & Time Teleportation

GM Notes:

With my C&C group finally getting back to normal, and my one on ones still a bit slow, I’ve decided to try a new idea. Requirements for joining would be: able to post at least five paragraphs at least once a week, while keeping up with OOC discussion and planning. That’s it. All I ask is that you’re creative, friendly, prompt and literate.

The Light Premise and History of Magic are told in the perspective of one of my two main characters. Her name is Urkwia and she will be the general leader in terms of spearheading the fantastical quest.

Light Premise:

There is a book which has been passed down from generation to generation. Inside, it contains the secrets of magic, secrets which have become dormant since the Battle at Rav’kah. The Battle at Rav’kah took place 15 years ago and claimed the lives of nearly every magician involved in that civil war. Very few got away. Those who did either stayed in their world or migrated to the only other known world, known as our Earth. As you may know, Earth follows science over magic and these magicians who fled had to keep their secrets hidden or risk being dissected or locked away.

In my world, Thera, magic is still very much alive but it is a dying art. The book is the key to restoring magic and the world’s prosperity. The book was damaged in the Battle at Rav’kah and pages were torn. Some people took them to Earth while others kept them here, in Thera. Needless to say, some people tried to follow the guidelines in the pages but with missing instructions and warnings, some people paid with their lives. The book needs to be collected at any cost.

So I’ve made it my mission to help collect the pages and the people who are missing, tracking them down in both Thera and Earth. If they have any information, I will collect it at any cost.

Magicians can be beautiful generous people or they can be deceitful and resentful people.

It is up to me and whoever can join my cause, to weed out the unworthy souls and make sure that only the best people can bring in a new era in Thera.

History of Magic:

The book I mentioned above depicts how to give yourself the ability to use magic. Controlling it and making it work for you, is on your shoulders. The book is called Magicalla. It shows the reader how to design tattoos and what the process is to find all the needed ingredients. Some tattoos give you the gift of wind, while others give you the power of internal heat. If you use both tattoos, you may be able to produce fire. Of course, these desires will be painful to burn into your skin, even if you can find everything you need, you may not survive the ordeal. And when you do survive, you may not be able to use or control your magical skill very well.

In the past, cities and clans were dedicated to helping followers unlock the magical etchings. They would send flocks of people out to find ingredients while others would train their bodies and minds in preparation for the procedure. These groups were often successful in producing magicians who were strong and who held high moral values. Sadly, it was from these groups that unrest began to develop. Some of these clans began nitpicking at who they would accept. Some people were turned away because of their lack of wealth, while others were turned away because of their excessive wealth. I watched people around me become tired of silly rules and regulations.

It became clear that magic in the hands of certain people with inflated egos, was wrong. While I had tattoos of my own, I decided that once the fighting ended, I would need to fix everything. Others with tattoos became seen as greedy people, when in reality the stereotype was forged with the civil wars and battles which raged on the Plains of Estella and Grie’h Bay. People in Thera had to hide their beautiful markings, some tried to nullify their skills and give magic up, but it wasn’t an easy thing to do. The tattoos from Magaicalla couldn’t be taken off one’s skin, but could be weakened. It’s even rumored that some people lurking after the Battle at Rav’kah began to make plans of their own design, hoping that by making their own tattoos and magical etchings, that they would be able to reclaim glory and rid the Thera of the past in which all magicians have been hunted and hated.

We start in the Earth year of 2015. Most of the story will take place in Thera but some events will require the cast to go back to Earth. I would say 70-30 in terms of Thera and Earth settings. It’s likely to change through the course of the story though.

Tattoos:

I’ll keep this brief, tattoos can range from healing to defense to offense, to something else entirely. A tattoo’s size and appearance don’t dictate strength, as much as how much life force is needed to utilize the mark. You may have a large tattoo but it may do something simple but draining. Tattoos can be combined to summon powerful abilities but not every marking can be combined. Some skills are meant to be used alone. And some call for such rare offerings, that very few can use certain spells. The procedures vary but are very painful. If the magician doesn’t die from the pain or kill themselves in the madness, it is still likely that they could die from infection or the tattoo backfiring or worse, rejecting the caster.

More information to come later.

Playable Roles and Skills:

At the Battle at Rav’kah, your character can be anywhere from five to fifteen, do the math accordingly.

- You can play someone from Thera who fled to Earth between the years 2000 and 2009.

If you decide to play someone who fled, keep in mind that their history in magic should reflect when they could be capable of jumping to another world. I would find it unlikely that anyone under the age of say, eight would be able to flee so soon. If they had to wait, did they find someone to train them and give them a special tattoo? Or were they waiting because of their family in Thera? Or did they hope that the strife would resolve itself? Were they hopeful that the battle would bring change, and not disagreements? How have they blended with Earth? Where are they? Have they gone back to Thera? Just some things to think about.

- You can play someone from Thera who stayed in their world.

Why did they stay? Was it their choice? Are they trying to find pages of Magicalla? Or did they keep their secret safe and live a normal life in peace somewhere? Have they already met Urkwia? Have they gotten stronger? Have they fought to save the name of magicians everywhere? Did they ever have the power to go to Earth? If so, why? If not, why not?

GM Notes:

As a GM, I would prefer you pick the latter option for the sake of the ball rolling more smoothly. I would prefer to have say, two or so who live on Earth, and the rest I would like to be native to Thera and stay there. I left out a lot of information, I know. The OOC will cover basic Thera locations, the book called Magicalla, various known tattoos, a slightly more lengthy history of the big Battle at Rav’kah, and the starting point, as well as the male and female magicians I would be writing as.

Consider this a fantasy where you can jump from one dimension to the other, even if your character can’t do so, they will still be able to jump with the aid of someone who can. Do not mistake the ability as a badge of honor. Consider this a long tale, a classic quest where you need to find something, fight against evil in the name of justice, and deal with the possibility of Earth and Thera may not be so separated as they appear.

This will be a big slice-of-life/dramatic/adventurous/heroic/playful/dark story. We will focus on character development and travel. If keeping track of health, money, enemy locations and saving the helpless doesn’t interest you, this might not be a good fit. We will have the big goal of putting Magicalla back together while restoring the name of magic and magicians in Thera, but we will also need to take on jobs, quests, travel from one world to the other while fighting and laughing along the way. If you’re ready to mark your skin and embrace pain, raise your hand.

Awesome, well since it's just us two, we can probably talk and contribute as to what we want or are thinking about. (rather than me being being GM I mean)

Sorry about the delay, PMs are my downfall, but with a lull in real life, I'm sending you one now if you're still interested.
