Since the beginning of time, human being on earth is born with a counter on their wrists. In the early days, it was believed to be something given to humanity by the gods. To this day, how it works is still unexplained, but most people have stopped questioning it.
Children are taught about the counters at a young age, being told that they count down to when something important will happen to them. They are also told that even the simplest actions can change it. Taking a different path to work, deciding to talk to the new kid at your school, even changing what you want to have for a snack can alter the time on your counter. People have claimed to have found their soulmates because of the counter, others have said that their counters told them when they would reach stardom, or when they would make a life changing discovery.
The counter never reveals what it is counting down to. That's for the person that it belongs to to find out. If the countdown had been completed, it will blink several times before resetting. If it does not blink before resetting, then it either means that you have done something to change your intended route, or the counter has decided to count down to something else.
You go along like you do every day, but an aged man who seems entirely out of place enters your field of vision for a short time. For whatever reason, you glance at your counter. When you do, there are only seconds remaining on it, but it pauses at two. You look around again and fail to see the aged man again. Looking back at your counter, it goes back to whatever time it was before originally. The same thing happens to you a few times in the future, where your counter is so close to reaching zero, but it goes back to the original number. Wanting for this to finally stop, you decide to go after the aged man when he crosses your path again, intending to find out what is going on.
