The year is 2050. Over a decade ago humans began to set their sites on the red planet. Before it could be colonized, however, it had to be mapped and studied. While the probes were carefully mapping every square meter of the planet's surface, including spectrographic scans that went 10m beneath the surface, everyone that wanted to join and managed to pass the preliminary tests for colonists were put through years of training, making sure that everyone had a basic knowledge of how to do many different jobs in the base. When the scans came back they loaded the data into the most complex simulator ever built. Trainees would live in a base just like the prefab bases they would use on Mars. Vehicles would simulate the drive to anywhere they wanted to go, and the outside of the vehicle would be an artificial environment meant to approximate the surface conditions of where they were going. Anything the automated systems collected would be made from Earth materials and sent to them. Even the air outside the simulator base would be false Mars air. We will be the colonists, sent four at a time to live in a simulator. There, the trainers will constantly toy with our environment, testing us, and trying to break us and seeing if we can handle the job in situations of extreme stress. We will live there for two yearsoruntil everyone "dies", maintaining the base, completing our assigned missions, and living in martian conditions, save the gravity. After all, with only four open slots on the first ship, they can only send the best.
