Crow relaxed when Penelope said that she didn’t think her father hated him. As far as he could tell, John was the only person who still had the power to stand in the way of their courtship now that he’d taken the title of a nobleman. If the older knight didn’t want them to be together, it was going to be difficult to get around him. Still, even if she doubted that her father hated him outright, he planned to tread carefully around the man if or when they ever crossed paths again. After all, he didn’t want to risk doing something to upset him anymore than he already had the last time.

As Penelope went on to say that he should get going, Crow nodded solemnly. He wished they had more time to be together, but there were still just enough other people in the Great Hall that they might risk drawing attention to themselves if they lingered for much longer. Knowing that short meetings like this were probably the most they were going to get away with for a while, he grew even more eager for the day when he would be able to court her openly. It was going to be a nice change compared to all the sneaking around they had been doing for the entirety of their relationship. They hadn’t been so free since they had been traveling alone in Younis two years ago.

“Alright,” he sighed, rising to his feet. “I should get some sleep anyway. From the sound of it, I’m going to have another long day of being told what a ‘savage’ I am.” He rolled his eyes and then casted her a smile. “I’ll see you around, love. Good luck with that guard shift.”

Having said his goodbyes, Crow headed for the entrance of the Great Hall with a tired yawn. As always, Preston fell in step beside him, and the two walked through the long hallways that led to his bed chamber. It didn’t take long before he got back. As soon as the door was closed, he slipped out of his boots and clothes and put on a set of plain linens that the attendant brought to him—it was getting cold enough at night that he preferred to be dressed—before settling down to sleep for the night.

Penelope returned his smile and gave a small nod as she rose up to her feet to leave. "Thanks. Good luck with your lessons." The knight hung back for a moment as she let Crow leave first before heading out of the Great Hall as well. She walked quietly down the corridor and headed down the stairs as she made her way to the front gates. As she reach them, she relieved the guard that had been positioned there earlier and took her position on the right side of the gates.

Looking over to her left, she watched as a new guard stepped over to relieve the old one and frowned as she realized it was none other than William. The older knight narrowed his gaze at her but remained silent as the guard from before took his leave. For a brief moment, Penelope hoped that the male knight would just keep his mouth shut and just focus on his guard shift. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

"So, care to start explaining anything?" William growled as soon as they were left alone.

"I have nothing to explain." Penelope responded, returning his glare. The female knight held her head a little higher, refusing to let William see any weakness. She was quite nervous about his questioning but showing that would only encourage him to pry further. So, the knight forced herself to hold his gaze and restrained herself from shuffling her feet.

"Don't try to act innocent, Vermillion. I know you have something to do with that cur rising to viceroy so out with it." William demanded.

"William don't tell me you purposely took this shift just so you could badger me about your assumptions." Penelope sighed.

"Don't change the topic." He warned her threateningly and smirked arrogantly. "I want answers and I'm not afraid to start spreading the word about your little romance. I'm certain your father wouldn't be pleased to hear about it."

Penelope rolled her eyes. The knight wished she could say he was right about them still being together, after all there wasn't much he could do about it now that Crow was viceroy, but for the sake of keeping their heads down, she knew that she couldn't. "You're ridiculous." she growled. "First off, what good would spreading rumors like that do you now? That thief you loath so much is a noble now. The most punishment I'd get is a couple disapproving stares and a maybe a lecture from my father. If they even believe you."

She smirked at William and crossed her arms over her chest. "Aside from that, I hear you're the reason this happened in the first place. If anything, it's your loud mouth that got him the job."

William seemed slightly caught off guard and eyed her warily. "What the hell do you mean?"

"You were the one that told the king about his ability to pick up languages. If he hadn't known about that, then he would have likely never even offered him the position." Penelope pointed out. It was difficult to say how true her words were. After all, the king did claim that he was also doing it to repay Crow for the past but that hardly matter at the moment. If she could convince William he was at fault, it'd likely make the male knight back down from saying anything more.

She met his gaze challengingly as she notice the male knight waver. "So, if you decide ratting on me is the way to go, I suggest you reconsider. Otherwise I'll return the favor."

"I was merely reporting to my superior. I had no idea-" William began defensively.

"Do you really think that'll matter? There are a lot of angry people, William, and I'm sure you'd lose quite a bit of respect amongst them." Penelope shrugged.

William clenched his jaw frustratedly before turning away from her to focus on his surroundings. "This is ridiculous." he grumbled.

Penelope gave a pleased smirk as the older knight seemed to realize that he was backed into a corner. With no further protest from him, she focused back on her shift. The two fell into a tense silence for the rest of the night, both trying to ignore the other's presence in order to get through the shift as peacefully as possible.

The next morning, Crow was roused by the soft light that flooded in through his window. It was a much more pleasant way to wake up compared to the last two days. He sat up on his bed and stretched, running one hand through his hair to smooth it down. Now that he’d had some time to rest and recover from his trip to the outer villages, he was feeling much better. His old wounds didn’t pain him anymore, and he wasn’t as exhausted as he had been before.

It seemed he’d had perfect timing too, because in the next moment, the door knob rattled, and Preston stepped inside. The attendant looked up at him in surprise, “You’re awake.”

“I don’t sleep through every morning,” Crow rolled his eyes. He swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stood up, stretching a bit more as he did.

“Given your record, you could see why I would have thought so,” Preston said casually as he retrieved a set of clothes for the viceroy to wear that day.

“If you keep up with those comments, I might do it just to spite you,” Crow muttered, taking the clothes from the boy’s hands. He changed out of the linens he’d worn for the night and put on the new garments. Like everything else he’d been given at the castle, the clothes were fine and more brightly colored than anything he’d worn in the outer villages before. He didn’t like how much the striking yellow tunic caught the eye, but at least it was comfortable against his skin.

Once he was ready, he walked with Preston to the Great Hall for breakfast. He hoped he would run into Penelope again, but when he arrived, he didn’t see her anywhere amongst the crowd. Instead, he spotted Naida, who was sitting with the rest of their siblings at a table near the back of the room. He hesitated at the sight of them. Apart from his sister, he didn’t know the rest of his family very well, so he didn’t feel comfortable approaching them. However, Naida seemed to want him to join them, and he also didn’t want to eat alone. He supposed he might as well stop by for a little while.

Crow made his way across the Great Hall, ignoring the glares of the nobles he passed, and sat down at his sister’s side, across from Braden and Willow. Though his sister had been eager to see him, he could tell the other two weren’t nearly so excited. Braden wrinkled his nose, and Willow lowered her gaze, poking uncomfortably at the remining food on her plate. There was a clear air of tension amongst them, but Naida didn’t seem to notice it.

“So, how was your first lesson yesterday?” she asked him curiously. “I didn’t see you at dinner.”

“That’s because my tutor made me work through most of supper,” Crow shook his head. “He spent the whole day teaching me etiquette.”

“Sounds like a bore,” Naida made a face.

“It was,” the viceroy grimaced. “And from what I’ve heard, yesterday was just the beginning.”

“Of course,” Braden spoke up. “It’s going to take a lot of work to turn a peasant like you into a decent nobleman. Honestly, I don’t know why father is even bothering to try.”

“Braden,” Naida hissed, giving her brother’s shoulder a shove. “You shouldn’t speak to Collin that way.”

“Why not?” the prince shrugged. “It’s the truth.” He tilted his chin up as he met Crow’s gaze. “Father should have given the position to a man of respect and left you in those dirty, rat-infested villages where you belong.”

“Watch your tongue,” Crow narrowed his eyes at his brother. “Those ‘dirty villages’ are my home, and the people there are more respectable than any nobleman I’ve ever met.”

“Is that so?” Braden said apathetically. “Well then, if you like them so much, why don’t you go back? I’m sure it won’t be hard for father to find a replacement for you.”

Crow clenched his jaw. “Believe me, I would,” he growled. “But I’ve got a reason to stay, so I won’t be going anywhere.”

At that, Braden tensed and shot him a cold look. “And what reason might that be?” he asked accusatively.

“My reason is my own,” Crow answered vaguely. “It’s nothing you need to concern yourself with.” He looked up as Preston stopped by the table to bring him a plate of food.

“I find that hard to believe,” Braden clenched his hands into fists with visible tension. “You just don’t want to tell me because you know I’ll have every reason to concern myself with it, isn’t that right?”

“Calm down,” Naida rolled her eyes. “He’s not after the throne, Braden.”

“And how would you know that?” the prince challenged.

“Because I’ve told her repeatedly that I have no interest in that kind of power,” Crow answered for her with a one-shouldered shrug. “The crown of Brerra brings more trouble than it’s worth. I should know. I tried to steal it once.” He bit into his bread before he added, “Believe me, it’s all yours, little brother.”

Braden bristled, seeming to dislike being reminded of his relation to the former thief. “You can say that as many times as you want,” he snarled. “But I know every man wants the throne, and you’re no exception. I’ll be keeping my eye on you, Collin.”

“Whatever helps you sleep at night,” Crow snorted, taking another bite of food. He could tell that, while Naida was friendly toward him, Braden and Willow weren’t going to be so quick to accept him.

The four siblings continued to eat in tense silence as the morning dragged on.

The rest of her shift went by without much issue. Though things were tense with William around, nothing more happened than their brief squabble. Eventually, as it reached early morning, they were both relieved of their shift and headed off on their separate ways. Penelope returned to her room and was quick to lay down in an effort to get what sleep she could before she'd have to start the day.

When she did wake up, it was already about midday. The knight stirred as she heard her door click open and squinted her eyes open as she looked over to see her father enter the room. She tiredly raised an eyebrow and slowly moved to sit up, rubbing a hand over her face as she tried to shake off her remaining sleepiness. "Did you need me?" she asked before letting out a large yawn.

"No. I just came by to take care of those letters for you." John replied as he stepped over to the table by her bed. He carefully picked up the small bundle of letters she had written and turned to look over at her. "I saw them yesterday when I stopped by to make sure you remembered your shift. I wasn't sure when you would be waking up so I figured I'd better take care of them before it gets too late and the messenger leaves."

"Oh.. thank you, father..I can get them now though." Penelope mumbled as she leaned back on the palms of her hands.

John looked over at her and shook his head. "I'll handle it... Instead, I think you should prep to go take a short trip to Bellmare."

Penelope blinked and gave him a confused look. "What? Why?"

"Well if you're going to be staying here for a while, you should at least bring some of your things here. A change of clothes, a comb, maybe a dress just incase something else comes up." John shrugged his shoulders and gave her a stern look. "It's best to be prepared and presentable at all times."

Penelope sighed and gave a polite nod. "Of course. I'll leave tomorrow morning then."

"Good." John nodded approvingly. "You can take my horse when you go. I'm assuming you can fit most of your things into his saddle bags."

Penelope nodded her head, a bit glad that she'd be able to take a horse. It'd mean that she'd be able to reach Bellmare rather quickly, which would also allow her some extra time there. While she was a bit reluctant to leave the castle, she also found herself a bit eager to visit her home after being away for so long. She only wished she was able to bring Crow along with her. Another time.. she thought with a quiet sigh.

John moved to exit the room but paused at the doorway, casting a long glance over his shoulder at Penelope. "By the way... What training do you think the new viceroy needs?" he asked, seeming small bit uncomfortable at having to bring up the topic of Crow to his daughter.

"What do you mean?" Penelope asked tilting her head slightly. "The tutor he has determines that, doesn't he?"

"He determines his education, yes. But I was asking more in the sense of his physical skills. Swordsmanship, archery, horseback riding." John eyed her. "He'll need to be trained in those aspects just like any other nobleman."

"He knows how to fight from what I know... And a bit of archery.." Penelope responded hesitantly. "I don't know about anything else though."

John paused then gave a small nod. "I'll look into it." he muttered. "He'll likely still require formal training regardless of whatever skill he might possess anyways."

"Speaking of him," Penelope shifted nervously. "you're still giving him a chance right?" The female knight looked hopefully at her father as he hesitated to answer. After her talk with Crow the night before, she couldn't help but double check. Her father was the one person who could still stand in their way after all. She could tell he wasn't completely supportive but as long as he was at least still considering giving them his blessing, the knight could relax a bit.

"I am." John finally replied with a sigh then met her gaze sternly. "He's done well so far but he moved up in rank fast and he's entering a world he's not familiar with. It'd be foolish not to be a bit cautious on how that might affect him."

"I'm sure it won't affect him as much as you think it will." Penelope gave a small smile of relief.

"We'll see." John grunted before turning to leave. "Just make sure you make that trip tomorrow."

Penelope nodded and watched as her father stepped out of the room once more. Now more awake, she stretched out her limbs and got up to her feet. It was already too late to get breakfast and now that her father had taken her letters, the knight had a bit more free time than she had originally thought she would. Deciding to put that time to use, she put on her armor and headed out to the training area, deciding to spend her time brushing up on her skills.

After some time passed, Naida was the one to break the silence between the four siblings again. She looked between them all and then cleared her throat. “So, what are all of you doing today?” she asked with a smile that looked a bit forced in Crow’s opinion. He wondered if she was just trying to start up a conversation because the quiet as uncomfortable to her.

“More of the same,” he answered with a shrug, sipping at his drink.

“A few lieutenants from one of the southwestern battalions are here to report to father,” Braden sat up a bit straighter. “I’ll be attending the meeting with them as we discuss battle strategies.”

Interest piqued, Crow snuck a subtle glance at his brother. He wondered if Penelope knew about the lieutenants he was speaking of. He didn’t know much about the southern battalions, since they were so far away from the villages in the north that he called home, but he remembered that she wanted to reach out to all the barons she could. If the knight didn’t yet have any connection to the southwestern barons, then perhaps this could be her way to reach them.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get a chance to ask about the lieutenants before Naida spoke up again.

“What about you, Willow?” the princess asked, turning to the youngest girl, who had been sitting silently for the entirety of their breakfast until now.

Crow followed her gaze curiously. Of all his siblings, he knew the least about Willow. His younger sister never seemed to speak unless spoken to, so the only things he knew about her had come from his conversations with Naida, and even she hadn’t told him much. All she’d said was that Willow had no interest in the adventurous life of knighthood, so she was being raised by their mother, the queen, to eventually wed a nobleman. Even when they had all been children, she had apparently been the meekest among them, never causing trouble or disobeying the rules set in place by their parents. Looking at her now, he could believe it. She definitely had the temperament to be a ‘proper noblewoman,’ as he could imagine Udolf saying.

Willow shifted slightly in her seat, seeming uncomfortable with being the center of attention. “Mother wants me to review the list of suitors she’s chosen to start courting me in the winter season,” she said in a soft voice.

“Wait, you’re already going to be courted?” Crow blurted out in surprise. He bit his tongue, reddening slightly at his own outburst. It wasn’t her age that caught him off guard, but rather the fact that she was the thirdborn—well, technically fourth—child of Albin. He would have thought Braden and Naida would be married off long before Willow. It was strange to him that the youngest sibling was going to be wedded first.

Willow seemed just as uncomfortable with his comment. She said nothing as she dropped her gaze to her lap again, avoiding eye contact with anyone.

Luckily, Naida jumped in to explain: “Father wants Braden to focus on his studies, and most noblemen of high rank don’t want to marry a woman who’s also a knight.” She shrugged. “That just leaves Willow to form a connection between our family and another powerful family in our kingdom.”

“Why does she have to do that at all?” Crow frowned, studying his younger sister, who looked unhappy to him.

“Because it will help our family solidify our place at the top of the kingdom,” Braden said with a sneer. “Father hasn’t been in power for very long, so if we join with another strong clan and gain their support, we’ll be more firmly accepted as the true royal family—not that I would expect a criminal to understand such complex matters.”

“I do understand,” Crow shrugged. “It all just sounds petty to me.”

Braden scoffed, “That’s because you’re a simpleton.”

“Or I just know a waste of effort when I see one,” Crow smirked. He lifted his glass to his lips and downed the rest of his drink before standing up from the table. “Anyway, I should go. I’ve got another long day of tutoring that I’m already late to.”

“See you later, Collin!” Naida said with a grin.

Crow didn’t wait for the others to respond before he turned and headed back to his room, unexcited to see Udolf for his second lesson.

The knight brandished her sword and sliced at the wooden target. It had been quite a while since the knight was able to practice her skills. In fact, thinking on it now, she had barely even touched her sword since the fight with Jaxon. Now that she finally had the chance to again, she found it strangely relaxing to brush up on her swordsmanship. After a while, she heard footsteps approaching and turned to see Cedric walking over to her.

"Hey Penelope." he greeted with a friendly smile.

"Hi." she replied with a small nod as she lowered her sword. "Come to train too?"

"Yeah, I had some time to kill." Cedric shrugged. He eyed her for a moment and then grinned. "Care for a sparring match?"

"I don't see why not." Penelope mused with an amused smirk. "Question is, do you really think you've improved enough to beat me?"

"Well I'm certainly willing to put it to the test." Cedric chuckled. He gestured for her to follow as he began to walk over an open space. Once they reached it, he turned back to her and drew his sword. "Just go easy on me, alright?" he smirked.

"I'll think about it."

With that, the two began their sparring match. Metal clashed as they crossed swords and Penelope skillfully dodged away from his attack. Though he seemed to be taking the fight seriously, the female knight could already detect the weaknesses in his stance. He was too focused trying to defend where he thought was going to strike that he ended up leaving other spots much more open. It seemed he really hadn't improved much from before.

She gave a soft tsk and feigned an attack at his side before switching last minute to aim higher at his shoulder. Cedric blinked and corrected himself last minute, barely managing to block it in time. While he might have had the size advantage, he certainly wasn't as swift. Penelope smirked a little at his surprised expression an drew her blade away from his, blocking as he gave a counter attack. He moved in again with another attack, trying to gain the upperhand. While he clearly made an effort to push her back, it unfortunately wasn't enough. They were far from matched when it came to skill and she not only blocked him but managed to disarm him as well, knocking the sword from his grip.

As it landed on the ground, she aimed her sword squarely at his throat and smiled. "You really do need more practice."

Cedric gave a hapless shrug and opened his mouth to reply but was cut off as a new voice piped in. "I'll say. That was a rather pathetic performance on your part."

The two knights turned to looked over at the source of the voice, finding a slightly younger man with sandy blonde hair watching them with his arms folded over his chest. He held his head high and had his nose slightly wrinkled as he looked at Cedric. Penelope studied him for a moment before she was able to recall seeing him at the ceremony for Crow. If her assumption was right, he was the son of the man who had first voiced his outrage over the promotion of the thief.

"So you think you can do better?" Cedric grumbled as he narrowed his gaze at him.

"Well, I certainly wouldn't lose after just a few hits." the man responded with a careless shrug.

Penelope glanced at Cedric then looked back to the stranger with a questioning gaze. "I'm sorry, but who are you?" she asked warily. While she wasn't exactly quick to defend Cedric, she also did appreciate the way he spoke down to the other knight. Not to mention she knew his family likely weren't very fond of Crow.

"I'm Alden Fischbach." he introduced himself with a polite dip of his head to her. Meeting her gaze, a new hint of interest entered them as he studied her. "You're Penelope Vermillion, correct?"

"I am... Did you need something from me?" Penelope questioned as she sheathed her sword.

"Possibly." Alden replied vaguely. "I'd rather discuss things privately... Perhaps over dinner or a drink?"

"What's so private about it that you can't just speak to her now?" Cedric challenged, stepping slightly closer to Penelope.

Alden eyed him and wrinkled his nose again before looking back to Penelope. Noticing her on guard, he let out an impatient sigh. "My father's a baron and rumor has it you need the support of those right now. We hope to work something out."

Penelope blinked, a bit surprise to learn that he was bringing up her campaign to seek a peaceful end to the war. Although it sounded like she'd have to bargain with them for it, she grew a bit hopeful that it would mean she'd gain another supporter. Even if him and his father didn't seem to be the best type of people, she could care less so long as they supported the end of the war. "Alright. I'm interested. But it'll likely have to wait. I've got matters to tend to in Bellmare tomorrow." she responded.

"Of course. Perhaps in two days we can arrange something? Say, an evening meeting in my father's study?" Alden asked with a hint of eagerness.

"That'll work." she nodded.

"Perfect. I'll have my servant find you when the time comes." Alden said.

"Very well." Penelope said then glanced at Cedric, who was standing rather tensely besides her. She supposed he didn't take Alden's blatant disrespect very well. He certainly didn't seem like good company but that mattered little to her if it meant the war's end. "Well, if that's all, I'm off. I'll see you two around." she said offering a polite smile as she dipped her head to the two men before turning and heading off. It was near evening now and the knight was quite hungry after missing breakfast so she headed straight for the Great Hall, assuming that dinner would be beginning soon.

“Have you no sense of time, boy?”

Crow shrugged wordlessly as Udolf chided him for being late for the second time in a row. He didn’t see why it mattered. They still had plenty of time left for whatever the tutor had planned for his lesson that day. However, the older man seemed quite offended by his tardiness. He stood in front of the viceroy with his arms folded sternly over his chest. His brow was furrowed, and his jaw was clenched as he went on: “I thought you had actually learned something after yesterday’s teachings, but it seems you’re just as hopeless as I expected.”

“I don’t see the problem,” Crow said defensively. “You tutor me all day, and it’s barely the afternoon. We’ve barely lost any time.”

“It’s about the principle of the thing,” Udolf shook his head in exasperation. “It doesn’t matter if you still have time to finish the content of your meeting or not. Showing up on time demonstrates respect to whomever you are meeting with.”

“Then consider my lateness a reflection of how much I ‘respect’ you,” Crow muttered under his breath.

“What was that?”

“Nothing,” Crow said airily, stepping past the older man to sit down at the table. “So, what will you be teaching me today?”

Udolf eyed him for a moment before responding, “Since you seem to have forgotten everything I taught you yesterday, we’ll start by reviewing your etiquette.”

“Again?” Crow groaned. “I already showed you that I memorized it all. Why do you want me to do it again?”

Udolf held up one index finger, “First, because repetition will help you perfect it.” He held up another finger. “And second, because I don’t believe you’ve memorized it. You certainly aren’t acting like you have. You turned up late, you didn’t greet me properly, and you’re still walking like some sort of wild animal.”

“I have,” Crow said indignantly. “I’ve just chosen not to put it into practice.”

That was the wrong answer.

“Oh, really?” Udolf’s jaw clenched again. “Tell me this, Lockton. Do you believe I’m just here to waste my time?”

Crow said nothing, sensing that the tutor was baiting him with the question.

“Because if you do,” Udolf went on without waiting. “Then we might as well end this lesson here, and I’ll go tell His Majesty that you are unteachable.”

“No, wait,” Crow objected quickly. He wavered for a moment before going on through gritted teeth, “I’ll do what you teach me.”

“You will practice acting like a proper nobleman?” Udolf clarified.

“…Yes,” Crow muttered.

“Good,” Udolf nodded, stepping over to stand by the viceroy’s side. “Now then, review for me what you learned from yesterday’s lesson.”

--

Crow spent most of his lesson reviewing and refining the etiquette that Udolf had taught him, along with learning a few new things about how he should interact with people of different statuses and—since he was the king’s ambassador—different cultures. Silently, he found it shallow that he didn’t have to show respect to lower-class nobles. It made much more sense to him to return whatever respect was given to him in the first place. Of course, he kept his thoughts on the matter to himself, since he knew he would just earn himself another lecture from Udolf if he voiced his opinion to the stubborn old man.

By the end of the day, Crow grew sick of being told how to behave and was relieved when he was dismissed for supper—the tutor didn’t make him repeat everything this time, since he’d proven that he really was memorizing everything as they went. He ended the meeting in the formal manner that Udolf had taught him, although, inwardly, he cursed the old man with whatever profane names he could think of in the moment. The tutor may have forced him to give in to noble doctrine on the outside, but he refused to let anyone break his spirit.

Once Udolf left, Crow and Preston—the attendant had reappeared toward the end of the lesson again—walked to the Great Hall for supper. As he did at breakfast, Crow searched the vast room for Penelope and frowned slightly when he didn’t see her again. After missing her that morning, he’d been hoping to see her at least once that day, but it was starting to look like they wouldn’t cross paths at all. He let out his breath in a disappointed sigh. However, before he could take one step toward the closest empty table, he flinched as someone threw an arm over his shoulder.

“Hey, Collin,” Naida grinned. “Looks like we got here at the same time today, huh?”

“Looks like it,” he returned her smile once he’d recovered from his initial surprise.

“Come on,” his sister stepped away from him and waved her hand in a beckoning gesture. “Let’s find a place to sit.”

“Alright,” Crow nodded, following her into the room. “Just as long as we don’t sit near Braden again.” He wrinkled his nose. “I still need some more time away from him before I can handle another bought of his insults.”

Naida laughed, “He’ll get used to you eventually. He’s just protective of his heritage. Once he realizes you’re not trying to cut in line for the throne, I’m sure he’ll warm up to you.”

“Perhaps,” Crow shrugged. “But I still don’t want to sit near him right now.”

Okay,” Naida rolled her eyes and reached for his wrist. “Come on. I think I saw an empty table over here.”

“Fine, fine,” Crow smirked, finding her enthusiasm infectious as he followed her through the crowd.

Now alone, Penelope let out a small sigh as she made her way back into the castle. She really hoped that she'd be able to join Crow or at least Naida for dinner. Cedric wasn't terrible company but she still didn't trust him enough to let her guard down around him and Alden's sudden introduction had her admittedly a bit on edge. Climbing up the stairs and entering the Great Hall, she swept her gaze over the various nobles, looking and hoping to spot a friendly face. Fortunately, she caught sight of Naida waving to get her attention.

She smiled and headed over, her heart fluttering excitedly as she noticed Crow sitting with her as well. Penelope caught Naida's subtle gesture for the knight to sit down next to Crow as she placed both of her palms on the bench besides her. The knight rolled her eyes, a bit amused by the princess' efforts to get them together. This time though, she didn't feel the need to protest and in fact, figured it'd be a decent opportunity to get a little closer to Crow. She complied and sat down besides the viceroy but still kept a bit of distance between them.

"Hey guys." she greeted with a small nod.

"Hey! Where have you been? I haven't seen you since yesterday morning." Naida asked, still grinning victoriously now that she had gotten her friend to sit next to Crow.

"Busy writing letters and that night shift." Penelope shrugged. "You probably won't see much of me tomorrow either."

"Why do you say that?" Naida asked, frowning slightly.

"I'm heading to Bellmare to pick up a few things since I'm going to be staying here a while." she explained with a glance at Crow before she looked back to Naida. "I should be back before nightfall though."

Crow sat down across from Naida at the table with a sigh. Even though he hadn’t done much that day, he felt tired and couldn’t wait to go to bed. It had only been two days, and he was already starting to find his new life as a nobleman unbearable. He missed the freedom of being able to live every day on his own terms, without the restrictions of rules and customs weighing down on his shoulders. He may not have had the luxury of rich foods and fine clothing, but at least then he hadn’t been forced to spend a whole day learning how to show respect to other people who wouldn’t return it.

“So,” Naida’s voice drew him from his thoughts. He looked up to see her smirking at him amusedly. “Judging by that face, I’m guessing your lesson was just as dull as we expected. Am I right?”

“Yeah,” Crow shook his head, running one hand through his hair. “I’m starting to think it would have been more enjoyable to go back to prison.”

“Oh, it couldn’t have been that bad,” his sister snickered.

“Oh, but it was,” Crow grinned at her playfully. “Trust me, I’ve done both, and spending two days in a cell was much better than studying under that tutor for the same amount of time.”

“You’re just being ridiculous,” Naida laughed. She opened her mouth to make another comment, but then stopped when something else caught her attention.

Crow looked up to see that his sister had spotted Penelope by the front of the Great Hall. A smile threatened to take over his mouth, and he turned away to hide it. After thinking he had missed the knight at supper, her sudden appearance caught him off guard, so it was harder for him to hide his excitement. He lightly bit the inside of his lip as she sat beside him, avoiding her gaze and murmuring a quiet ‘hello’ when she greeted them.

Worried that he would give away his eagerness to be with the knight again, the viceroy remained quiet as the two noblewomen spoke to each other. He only looked up when Penelope mentioned that they wouldn’t see much of her tomorrow. As she explained that she was going to Bellmare, he nodded wordlessly, hiding his disappointment from the others. He wished he could accompany her on the short trip, but there was no way for him to get away with that—not while they were still keeping their relationship a secret, and not while Udolf was still tutoring him all day every day.

“Ah,” Naida frowned, expressing the disappointment for both of them. “Well, at least it’s just one day.” She paused for a moment, pursing her lips as another thought seemed to come to her. “What if I come with you?” she asked, perking up quickly. “I’ve got nothing else to do tomorrow, so it could be fun!” She turned to Crow with a mischievous glint in her eye. “What about you, Collin? Want to come?”

The viceroy blinked, his eyes flicking between Naida and Penelope. He shifted his weight, unprepared for the question. “I really wish I could,” he sighed, casting a brief, wistful glance at Penelope. “But I’ve got another lesson tomorrow, and I’ve already annoyed my tutor enough as it is. If I don’t show up, he’ll probably go and complain to the king.”

“Aw,” Naida pouted and turned back to Penelope. “Well, he can’t go, but I don’t mind skimping out on a few responsibilities.” She grinned. “What do you say?”

Penelope nodded her head as Naida pointed out it was just one day. She was glad it was too, especially since she doubted she'd be able to see Crow even once the next day. As Naida suggested tagging along, the knight perked up as well. She had been planning to make the trip alone but welcomed the company of her friend. Her gaze shifted over to Crow as Naida tried to rope him into their plans, beginning to eat her food that was brought over as the two spoke.

The knight wasn't surprised to hear that he couldn't make it, she figured he'd be busy with his lessons, but it didn't stop her from feeling a bit disappointed. In hindsight, it was probably for the best considering she planned to travel by horseback anyways. Him being seen riding behind either one of them could cause for unwanted rumors to say the least. In response, she shrugged her shoulders and gave him a half smile before her gaze shifted back over to Naida.

"So long as I don't get held responsible for these missed responsibilities," Penelope chuckled. "I wouldn't mind the company."

"Of course not. Besides they're not that important anyways." Naida beamed and waved her hand dismissively.

Penelope smirked. "If you say so. Anyways, I'm planning to leave first thing in the morning so just meet me by the stables tomorrow." she informed her friend.

"Alright! I can't wait! It's been ages since I've left the castle for a good reason." Naida sighed exaggeratedly.

"Good reason?" Penelope raised an eyebrow at her.

"Well, a fun reason I mean." Naida grinned.

"Right." Penelope gave a small laugh and shook her head. She took another bite from her food and glanced over at Crow. "So, how was the lesson today? More etiquette like I expected?" she asked casually.

Crow looked away from Naida and Penelope as they talked about going to Bellmare together. Even though he was the one who had made the decision not to go, he couldn’t help but feel a little left out. His sister and the knight were the only two people in the castle that he got along with well, so he could already tell that their absence was going to feel quite tangible to him tomorrow. He wished he could just ditch his lesson and go with them, but unfortunately, Udolf’s threats to speak with his father were too much of a risk. It was better to miss out on one day with Penelope than lose the future he was working so hard to secure for them because of one impulsive decision.

Caught up in his thoughts, it took the viceroy a moment to realize that Penelope had changed the topic to speak with him. He blinked and looked up from his plate. “Yeah,” he nodded, casting her a helpless smile. “We went over everything he taught me yesterday and then added some more etiquette that I’m supposed to know for my specific job.”

“And it was worse than prison, right?” Naida snickered, referencing his earlier comment.

“Of course,” he grinned back at her. “I’ll take a cold cell over Udolf’s teaching any day.”

“Wait,” Naida’s eyes widened. “Your tutor’s name is Udolf?”

“Yes,” Crow tilted his head slightly. “Why?”

His sister snorted, “Father gave you the same tutor that educated the rest of us.”

“He did?” Crow raised a brow, surprised to learn that Albin had given him the same teacher that he’d hired for the rest of his children. “That’s funny. He doesn’t seem to know we’re related.”

“Who knows?” Naida shrugged. “But now I know why you hate your lessons so much. Udolf is a real stuffed shirt.”

“So I’ve noticed,” Crow said dryly. He casted a furtive glance at Penelope and bit his lip again. He wished he could talk to her more openly, but with the princess around, there wasn’t much that he could say without arousing suspicion. With a subtle exhale, he finished off the rest of his dinner and stood up from the table. “I should get some sleep. I’ve been late to my last two lessons, and I’d rather not get another earful about it tomorrow.” His eyes flicked toward the knight before returning to Naida’s face. “I guess I’ll see you in two days.”

“See you!” Naida raised her hand in a wave. “Try not to miss us too much.”

“Oh, I’m sure I’ll find someone else to bother while you’re gone,” he said with a wry wink. “Night.” Glancing at Penelope one more time, he dipped his head in a curt goodbye and then headed back to his room to turn in for the night.

Penelope listened as Crow and Naida spoke, finding it interesting that the king had given Crow the same tutor as he had given his other children. It was still a bit surprising how seriously the king was taking Crow's promotion. However, thinking it over again, she supposed if he treated him anything less that the other nobles would catch on and not take the promotion as serious, or rather permanent, as it was.

Coming out of her thoughts, she looked over at Crow as he stood up to leave, biting back a small sigh. She knew their short meetings were the best they were going to get for a while but the knight couldn't help but wish she'd get a little more time with him, even if it wasn't alone. She gave him a small nod in return. "Good night." she said before turning back to Naida as he left. The two remained there a little longer, speaking about plans for tomorrow before eventually heading off to their rooms as well.

---

The next morning, Penelope was up early and was quick to get ready for the day. While she was still a bit disappointed she wouldn't be seeing Crow for a full day at the least, she was excited to spend the day with her friend and visit her home. It had been quite a while since she had last been to Bellmare, let alone her actual home after all. So, the knight wasted no time in getting ready for the day and heading out to the stables. She had barely made her way out the front door when her gaze fell on Cedric, who was heading inside. The male knight looked a bit tired from his guard shift and blinked in surprise when his gaze fell on her.

"Penelope? What are you doing out here so early?" he asked stifling a yawn as he approached her.

"I'm going on a trip to Bellmare today. I was just on my way to get my horse ready." Penelope explained with a shrug.

"Heading home for the day?" Cedric asked with a small smile.

Penelope opened her mouth to reply but didn't get the chance to as Naida sounded from behind her. "Hey Penelope!"

The knight turned to look over at her friend as she hurried to join them and gave a small smile. "Good to see you didn't forget."

"I would never!" Naida grinned. Her smile faded slightly as her gaze fell upon Cedric, who was eying her with surprise. "Who's this?"

"M-My name's Cedric. I'm a friend of Penelope's." he said with a deep bow.

"Oh.. Well nice to meet you Cedric!" Naida smiled.

Cedric rose from his bow and casted a glance at Penelope, still looking surprised by how close she seemed to be with the princess. "I better get going. Have a good trip, Penelope. I'll see you when you get back." he told the knight, offer a warm smile before he dipped his head to Naida and hurried off.Penelope said a word of goodbye and watched him go before turning back to Naida, blinking in surprise as her friend now stood with her arms crossed over her chest and pouting.

"What?" Penelope asked confusedly.

"What's with you and him? He was sure giving you some 'friendly' looks." Naida sighed disappointedly.

Penelope cracked a grin and gave a laugh. "Oh gods don't tell me you're on this whole courting business again."

"Well if you were already interested in someone else, I hope you would at least tell me." Naida said, looking a bit confused.

"First off, I stand by what I said about not looking to court anyone right now. Second off, there's no way in hell I'd ever take him as my suitor." the knight stated with a shake of her head. Feeling Naida eye her confusedly, she let out a sigh and gestured for the princess to follow her as she began to walk on towards the stables. Knowing Naida, she'd likely pester her about what that meant and not feeling the need to keep it a secret, Penelope saw no reason not to explain the story.

"Before I met you, about three or four years ago, I did...fancy him." Penelope let out a small sigh. "He seemed to reciprocate those feelings so we courted for a short while.. However, he ended up ending the courtship once he realized I didn't have any access to my family's power or wealth due to my half peasant blood. He was trying to use me for that and once he realized I didn't have it, he tossed me aside."

"What a jerk." Naida huffed, glaring over her shoulder.

Penelope smiled a little, warmed by her friend's support. "Yeah.. Well we haven't exactly been on the best of terms since then. But he's trying to make up for it now so I'm giving him a chance. It was years ago after all. But I'd certainly never go any further than friendship with the likes of him."

"I guess.." Naida gave a sigh then smirked mischievously at her friend. "I bet Collin would never do anything like that."

Penelope rolled her eyes as her friend brought up the viceroy. "I'm sure he wouldn't but that doesn't change my answer from before Naida." she shook her head and offered her friend a small smile. "Come on, let's go get our horses so we can leave.

The next morning, Crow woke up on his own again. He sat up on his bed and rubbed his eyes with the heel of his palm, yawning tiredly and looking over the empty room. It still seemed rather early, based on both the soft light coming in through the window and the fact that Preston had yet to show up to wait on him. Suddenly, he blinked. Preston wasn’t here yet. That meant he still had a chance to get ready for the day without the attendant’s unnecessary help.

Encouraged by the thought, he climbed down from the bed and ambled over to the large wardrobe, where he had seen Hunter and Preston get his clothes before. However, when he opened the door, he paused. Having lived with just one set of clothes on his back for most of his life, it was overwhelming to have so many choices available. There was a variety of different garments—tunics, vests, surcoats, et cetera—that he had never worn before. It was strange to think that he had so many expensive shirts and trousers in his room, while there were some families in the outer villages who were dressing their children in burlap sacks.

“I’ll help you with that.”

Crow startled at the sound of a voice and turned around to see Preston walking toward him from the door. Apparently, in his distraction, the attendant had had enough time to show up in his bed chamber. He glanced back at the open wardrobe once more before taking a step away from it. Though he preferred to dress himself, he didn’t know enough about the clothes of nobleman to put together an ensemble that the other people in the castle would find acceptable. Normally he wouldn’t have cared if they approved or not, but he didn’t want to draw more attention to himself than he already did. Plus, it was just easier for the servant, who already knew what he was doing, to do the simple task for him.

Oh, gods. Am I becoming like them? He thought with a grimace as he realized he was actually starting to accept Preston’s help. Not wanting to dwell on it, he focused instead on paying attention to the clothes his attendant selected for him from the wardrobe, so he would be able to get better at doing the menial job for himself in the future.

When the boy handed the articles over to him, the viceroy changed clothes quickly and put on his boots to get ready for breakfast. However, he hesitated before heading for the door as his conversation with Naida and Penelope suddenly came back to him. When he went to the Great Hall today, neither his sister nor the knight was going to be there. The thought of spending a meal in the company of people who hated him made him reluctant to leave the room.

“Is there a problem?” Preston asked, noticing that he was lingering.

Crow shifted his weight. Despite his discomfort, he didn’t want to admit to the attendant that he was nervous about eating in the Great Hall without the two people he was familiar with. “No,” he lied, forcing himself to walk to the door. “I just remembered something. It’s not important though. Come on, I want to eat.”

Luckily, the boy didn’t question him any further, and Crow made it to the Great Hall without having to explain himself.

When they arrived, the viceroy wavered by the door, taking a moment to look for an empty table that was as far from the other nobles as he could get. When he found one, he wasted no time heading over to sit down. As always, the nobles he passed casted him dirty looks, and he avoided their gazes, in no mood to start a fight with anyone when he was so severely outnumbered. To his relief, he made it to the spot he’d been eyeing without any trouble.

Preston studied him curiously, and Crow didn’t doubt that the attendant was wondering why he was keeping to himself today. Fortunately, the boy had enough sense not to ask him about it. “Should I bring you your food?” he offered instead.

“Yeah,” Crow nodded, casting the servant a smile. “Thanks.”

Preston bowed and walked away, leaving him alone. Meanwhile, Crow propped his elbow on the table and rested his chin in his hand as he gazed out over the crowd of noblemen and women in the Great Hall. As he’d expected, the bustling castle felt much lonelier without Penelope and Naida around to keep him company. He hoped the day would go by quickly, so he wouldn’t have to be alone for much longer.

In a strange way, he got his wish.

“You look like you could use some company.”

Crow turned around in surprise as a familiar voice caught his attention. Penelope’s father, John, was approaching him from another part of the room. He shuffled his feet beneath the table, unsure how to act around the stoic man. After their last encounter had ended so badly, he wanted to restore his image to the older knight. “I guess so,” he shrugged, trying to act nonchalant despite the discomfort he felt about being alone with his lover’s father.

If John noticed his unease, he didn’t comment on it. The knight sat down across from him and folded his arms on the table, “I’ve been meaning to find you.”

“You have?” Crow swallowed nervously. He couldn’t think of very many reasons why Penelope’s father would be looking for him, and he doubted the knight had shown up to give him his blessing.

“Yes,” John nodded. “I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but I’m going to be in charge of some of your training. In order for me to do a thorough job, I’m going to need you to tell me a few things, so I’ll be better prepared to teach you.”

Crow felt his shoulders fall with relief. It seemed that the knight hadn’t come to reprimand him after all. “Oh,” he managed a weak smile. “What did you want me to tell you?”

“I need to know what skills you already have, as well as what you lack,” John said curtly. “To start, tell me a bit about what you know of fighting. Penelope told me you already have an understanding, but I’d like to know to what degree you can handle different weapons.”

“Well,” Crow drummed his fingers on the table as he thought. “I do know how to fight fairly well, in my own opinion. I’ve used a lot of different weapons too, like swords, daggers, bows… I even practiced a little with a flail that I stole from a knight once.”

“That’s good,” John said contemplatively. “And would you say you’re skilled with these weapons?”

“Not all of them,” Crow admitted. He felt a bit strange speaking about his weaknesses to a knight, and he had to remind himself that it was just for the purpose of getting better. “I find bows the easiest to use, but I prefer to fight up close with my enemies, so I’ve also spent a lot of time learning how to use daggers.”

“And how would you compare your skill with a knight’s?”

“It’s hard to say,” Crow shrugged. “I can usually hold my own in a fight, but I also rely on surprising my opponent to get ahead. It’s often worked for me during this war, since all the knights are just looking out for enemy colors. They never expect a peasant like me to swing a blade at them.”

John studied him thoughtfully, “And in a fair fight?”

Crow shifted his weight as he confessed hesitantly: “It’s harder for me to win when knights are prepared for my attack.”

“Then we’ll work on that,” John said matter-of-factly.

“Alright,” Crow glanced to the side as Preston brought out his food. The boy tested it quickly and walked away again, leaving the two men alone.

As they ate their breakfast, the viceroy snuck occasional glances at the older knight. It was still strange to him that the man had decided to join him for a meal. He supposed he should have been happy, since it seemed to mean that Penelope’s father was giving him a chance, but he couldn’t shake his worry that he was one tongue-slip away from setting John off again. Deciding to err on the side of caution, he kept his mouth shut and finished his food in tense silence.

When he was done eating, Penelope’s father stood up from the table, “I’ll start integrating physical training into your regimen sometime in the next few days. If I don’t see you again before then, Udolf will let you know when to expect it.”

“Okay,” Crow nodded, hesitating for a moment before he added: “Thank you.”

John just grunted in response and turned to walk away, leaving the viceroy behind as he left the Great Hall without another word. Once he was gone, Crow let out the breath he hadn’t realized he was holding and got up as well. With no reason to stick around, he headed back to his room, hoping he wasn’t late for his next lesson with his ornery tutor.

The two knights made quick work of saddling their horse. Penelope felt a bit pressured to do so with the way the young stable boy was eying them with nervousness. Naida had refused the boy's help since she preferred to saddle her own horse so the knight guessed he was likely afraid he'd get in trouble for just standing back to let the princess do her own work. Luckily he had nothing to worry about and the two friends were on their way to Bellmare.

The two chatted about various things on the ride there. Penelope told Naida more about her plans to try and convince the king to end the war peacefully. Naida reacted supportively of course and that gave the knight more hope. Naida might not have been next in line for the throne but surely her opinion did carry some type of weight, both in her own family and with other nobles. The knight definitely thought her friend to be a rather powerful ally. Aside from that, Naida also spoke more on how things had been at the castle during her absence, making it clear to Penelope she had missed her and Olivia's company.

Eventually the two crossed over the bridge and made their way into Bellmare, which made Penelope grin. The city hadn't changed a bit from it's luxurious manors and lively streets filled with both nobles and their servants. Best of all was how quickly her own family's manor came into view. Since her uncle was a baron, they had a large plot of land with four distinct buildings. There was the main house where most of her family resigned. It was large and well taken care of with beautiful decor at the front. To the right of it was the stables and to the left, was the servant's quarters. Away from the main house, there was another home, much smaller in size but still well kept. It was her home, the one she had shared with her father and Layth in her childhood.

Nowadays, it was really just hers. Layth had moved into the main house since he was being groomed to take over Edward's position and her father was rarely home to begin with. Though no one ever directly gave her ownership, the knight felt like it had pretty much fallen under her sole care over recent years.

The two rode over to the stable and dismounted their horses, allowing for the young stable boy to take them while they began to make their way towards her home. However, the two didn't get very far before the sound of rushing footsteps caught their attention. Turning her head to glance over her shoulder, Penelope blinked in surprise as Letitia came hurrying towards them.

"Penelope Vermillion! How dare you try to just sneak in here without even coming to tell me hello first!" Letitia scolded as she threw her arms around the knight as soon as she reached her.

Penelope blushed and gave a small laugh as she returned the older woman's embrace. "I'm sorry, Letitia. I swear I was going to find you once me and Naida got settled in."

Letitia gave her a firm squeeze before letting her go and smiled at the two as she stepped back. "I'm just teasing dear. And Naida, it's good to see you again." she said in a more formal tone as she dipped her head.

"Good to see you too, Letitia." Naida said with a smirk.

"Oh! You two must be starving. Come on, come on. We just finished serving your family their breakfast but we just got our own. I'm sure there's enough to spare if you don't mind not eating all fancy." Letitia quickly offered.

Having woken up far before breakfast was served the two women nodded their heads, eagerly accepting the invitation. The older woman lead the way into the servant's quarters and the two followed without hesitation.

---

Breakfast went rather smoothly. Most of the servants weren't too surprised to have the two knights join them. Penelope occasionally chatted with her family's servants, knowing most of them rather well aside from a couple new faces who eyed her with uncertainty. Luckily Letitia warm attitude seemed to rub off and they relaxed once more so the morning went by rather quickly.

Around midday was when the knight decided she better gather her things to leave. Letitia tried to convince her to stay longer but Penelope didn't want to force Naida to stay at her home for so long. Her friend had barely gotten out of the castle and Penelope was rather sure she wanted to wander around the city a bit before they made their return. She didn't want to take away anymore time from that than she already had. So while Naida got the horses ready, Penelope headed into her home to collect a few of her items accompanied by Letitia, who wanted to spend as much time as she could with the female knight.

"I just hope you won't get in trouble for hanging around me for so long. If Krea gives you any problems, be sure to tell me when I visit again. I'll figure out someway to make her see reason." Penelope said as she gave the older woman a concerned look.

"Oh please dear I can handle her and that bratty daughter of her's just fine." Letitia assured with a confident smirk. "Besides, I've got Miriam and Daisy covering for me right now. I'll be fine. What I'm more interested in is what you've been up to. Are you back to get married? I heard your father planning something about that when he visited a few months back. Did Gavin return too?"

"Oh.. No actually I'm here to try and get the king to end the war... Gavin and I aren't actually courting anymore." Penelope admitted, scratching the back of her head as she paused from packing her clothing.

"What?!" Letitia gawked. "What happened? Gavin was such a nice boy."

The knight looked over at her and smirked amusedly. "I can't believe that bit of information is your priority."

"You know I don't care for politics, Penelope. Now out with it, what happened?" Letitia studied her closely. "Who broke it off?"

"I did." Penelope admitted shuffling her feet. "It's complicated but I just didn't feel for him in that way. We're still friends though."

"Uh huh..." Letitia's lips spread slowly into a mischievous smirk. "You found someone else didn't you?"

Penelope blinked, a bit caught off guard by the quick and somewhat accurate guess. "No." she lied.

Letitia laughed. "Don't lie to me Penelope, I know you far too well." she stated, making the knight blush. "So who is this new gentleman in your life huh?"

The knight hesitated to answer and shuffled her feet again as she shifted her gaze back to the clothing she was packing. "I-I can't say...It's complicated like I said." She found it surprisingly difficult to lie further to Letitia, especially when she trusted the woman so much.

There was a brief silence before Letitia spoke up quietly. "You're not packing to.. run off.. are you?"

The servant caught her off guard again and she whirled to look over at Letitia who was studying her with a worried expression. It hit the knight that Letitia probably had some knowledge about her parent's past. It was ironic to think that at one point, the servant wouldn't have been too far off in her guess. Penelope smiled at her and stepped over to the older woman to place a comforting hand on her shoulder. "No, I'm not. I'm just grabbing a few things for my stay at the castle, I assure you." she said honestly.

Penelope paused and shifted her gaze away as she felt her cheeks grow a bit warm once again. "It's just complicated because my father hasn't approved of it quite yet and I don't want word getting around."

"You really care for this mystery man, huh?" Letitia asked crossing her arms.

The knight smiled as she thought of Crow and nodded her head firmly. "I love him."

Lettia let out a whistle. "Well, I better get to meet this man. Especially since he seems to have captured you quite fully." she smirked in amusement.

"When I get the chance, I'll introduce you, I promise." Penelope chuckled. She paused and gave a concerned expression. "But uh... Letitia can you—"

"Don't worry. I've got no one to go telling." the servant assured with a warm smile.

"Thank you." Penelope said with relief. She turned and finished packing up her things, switching the subject of discussion. The knight soon finished and headed out of her home to meet up with Naida again as the two prepared to leave.

“Today, I’m going to begin teaching you how to read.”

Crow sat at the table in his room, staring at the pile of books and scrolls in front of him with wide eyes. He had shown up to his lesson on time for once and had just finished reviewing his etiquette under Udolf’s instruction. The tutor had been satisfied with his performance and announced that they would be moving forward with his lessons, onto other skills that he would find useful as the king’s ambassador. Apparently, today that meant he would be teaching him to be literate.

Though he was eager to learn this skill, Crow couldn’t help but find all the books a bit intimidating. There were so many of them, filled with pages that were covered from top to bottom in strange characters that he didn’t understand. It was overwhelming just to think about them, and part of him wondered how he would ever learn to understand them all.

It not so different than the languages I’ve already mastered, he thought, trying to reassure himself. I’ve even got a head start, since I know what words the characters spell. Feeling more confident in his ability, he turned to look up at Udolf, “Alright, so where do we start?”

The old man smiled. “It’s good to see you finally taking your lessons seriously,” he said with a hint of amusement. The tutor reached for an old, worn out scroll that was sitting at the top of the pile on the table and unraveled it. “This,” he explained. “Is the parchment I have used to teach children for years before you.” He laid the open scroll in front of the viceroy for him to see.

Crow rolled his eyes, unappreciative of being compared with a child. However, he said nothing. There was nothing he could do to change the fact that it had taken him so long to be educated, and it made sense that the tutor would have only needed to teach children in the past, since all nobles learned young. The most he could do now was prove that he was more competent than those children by learning to read and write quickly.

Turning his attention to the parchment, Crow was mildly surprised to see that it was decorated with the same letters Penelope had shown him before. The characters were laid out in one long row with the addition of a second, shorter row of symbols he had never seen before. Curious, he pointed out the second row to Udolf, “What are these?”

“Those are numbers,” the old man explained patiently. “I’m going to be teaching you math later, so you will need to learn to recognize them. For now though, just focus on the top.” He gestured to the letters and then handed the viceroy a feathered quill. “To start, you must memorize all of these characters. Practice copying them individually until you can recognize each one by its shape. As you do, try to remember what sounds they represent. I will tell you what they are as we go.”

“Okay,” Crow nodded, accepting the quill from him. He looked over the paper again. In the empty space around the two rows, there were other letters and numbers haphazardly scrawled by what he guessed had been past students. They were messy and hard to read. Privately, he determined that he wanted to write his characters more neatly. After all, he was going to prove to Udolf that he was more capable than the children he had taught before.

So, with renewed resolve, he dipped the quill in the ink and found a clear spot to practice, following the tutor’s instructions as he worked.

--

The lesson took most of the day, with a few breaks in between in which Udolf had Crow recite some of the etiquette he’d been taught. However, it didn’t feel nearly as long this time. Since he was learning something that was more interesting to him, Crow found that he enjoyed this lesson more than the last. He was determined to master reading and writing quickly, both because he considered it a skill that was actually useful and because he knew that once he was able to write, he could begin sending letters back and forth to Hazel to keep up with the rest of his companions. The thought of being able to reach out to them without traveling three days to their camp was exciting.

By the time the lesson was over, Crow was in a better mood than he usually was for supper. He was still tired from the effort of memorizing so many different letters, but he also felt accomplished. He had learned each and every character on the parchment and could copy them well now. All that was left was to learn how to use them to form words and sentences, and he felt confident that he could do so quickly. After all, he already had a large oral vocabulary. How hard could it be to learn how to read and write a language he already knew?

“Good work today,” Udolf said as he gathered his supplies. “If you keep up with this pace, you might actually have some potential as the king’s viceroy.”

“I’ve always had potential,” Crow snorted. “You just didn’t want to see it until now because I was a peasant.”

“Perhaps,” the tutor shouldered his bag. “But you are, in fact, the first peasant I’ve come across with an aptitude for any sort of meaningful skill.”

Crow scoffed at that. He knew plenty of peasants with a variety of useful talents. Hazel and Evelyn were even literate—self-taught, too. Of course, he also knew there was no changing the stubborn old man’s mind once he had made it up, so he didn’t bother trying to defend his people. He knew the value of the people of the outer villages, and that was enough for now.

“I’m going to have my supper now,” he announced instead, gesturing for Preston to follow him as he turned to the door.

“Of course,” Udolf walked after him. “We will continue tomorrow.”

Crow nodded without response and exited the bed chamber with Preston close at his heel. After working so hard on his lesson that day, all he wanted to think about was filling his empty stomach. So, he headed down the corridor with the attendant, leaving his tutor behind on his way to the Great Hall.

Penelope didn't waste much more time at her home after she had packed her belongings. Since Naida had gotten the horses ready, the two were ready to leave in no time and said a quick word of goodbye to Letitia, who encouraged them to visit again soon. Having done what she needed, the knight relaxed as they rode further into the town. Bellmare was a city filled with wealthy nobles due to its relative closeness to both the castle and river so needless to say it had a rather impressive marketplace.

The two knights dismounted their horses and walked through it, casually looking over the various goods. They stopped at one stand that had a variety of jewelry. Naida expressed interest in getting her younger sister a small gift and swept her gaze over a selection of different necklaces. Penelope stood to the side, browsing with little interest over the other pieces nearby as she waited for her friend. Her gaze eventually fell on a rather expensive looking pendant.

It was crafted to resemble the god Toreus and seemed to be made out of pure gold, all except for the eyes which were a clear crystal—diamonds perhaps? Penelope was too get at identifying stones—and gleamed in the sunlight. Regardless, it reminded the knight of her meeting with god as well as making her feel a refreshed sense of urgency to end the war.

"Alright! I'm done!"

Penelope jumped slightly as Naida stepped back over to her side, pulled from her slight trance. She looked over at her friend and gave a small smile. "Great. Let's get going then."

"Actually... I wanted to check out a few more shops. I think we should get Collin something. Like a congratulations, good luck and also sorry you couldn't make it type of gift." Naida said and then grinned at Penelope. "What do you think? What would you get him?"

"I don't know." Penelope shrugged.

"Come on. You must have some kind of idea." Naida nudged her. "Help me out."

Penelope hesitated and shifted her weight. "Well.. All I can say is that it should be practical. I have a feeling he's not one for gaudy jewelry or other such luxuries." she replied a bit hesitantly, worried that Naida might look a little too deeply into her advice and how well she knew the thief.

"So it should be something he can use often?" Naida asked with a thoughtful look.

"I think so." Penelope nodded her head, relaxing once more.

Naida fell silent for a moment before letting out a long groan. "Gods I don't even know what that would be. Everything he could possibly need to use is at the castle isn't it?"

"Well.. yeah. But there's a difference between owning something and borrowing it." Penelope pointed out with an amused look. Spotting another stand nearby, a gleam entered her gaze and she turned to Naida, unable to suppress a grin. "Wait. I got it. I know exactly what you should get him."

---

Their trip to the market ended up being rather enjoyable. Penelope hadn't bought anything herself but she had helped Naida with choosing out an item for Crow, one she felt rather proud of. It was a quill made out of a crow's feather. They also got him a journal to go along with it. The knight thought it was quite fitting since it was a reminder of his past but also one he could use for his future as a viceroy. Though Naida would be the one giving him the gift, she hoped he would like it.

As the day wore on, the two grabbed an early dinner at an inn before making their trip back to the castle. Since it was a short journey, the two were able to make it just a short time before sundown. Penelope hopped off of her horse and stretched tiredly. Though the day had been enjoyable, all the moving around had her quite tired. She collected her bags and stepped away from the horse as the stable boy began to lead it away. This time, neither of the knights objected to letting the servant tend to the horse as they were both quite tired.

"Thanks for coming with me today." Penelope said as they headed into the castle.

"Of course! It was fun!" Naida smiled brightly.

"I'll see you tomorrow then." Penelope yawned and gave a small wave farewell to Naida before turning and heading off to her quarters for the night. It was still rather early but since she had already eaten, the knight didn't see any reason not to lay down. She placed her bag down in one corner of the room and then quickly settled into bed for the night.

As he had done at breakfast, Crow searched for an empty table away from the crowds that had gathered in the Great Hall for supper. Knowing that Naida and Penelope were probably going to be gone for the whole meal, he didn’t bother looking for them anywhere. Instead, he made his way over to the empty edge of a long table near the east side of the room. When he reached it, he sat down to wait for Preston to return from the kitchen with his food, letting his eyes sweep over the other people around him as he did.

Though the day had been lonelier to him than usual, it also brought him a sense of relief. Just a few days ago, he hadn’t known if Penelope would be able to return to the castle with him, and now that he’d experienced what the palace would have been like without her around, he was all the more grateful that her baroness had let her come back with him. He supposed he still had Naida, but he knew he still would have missed the knight dearly if she had stayed with her battalion. It was much better to only lose one day with her than months.

Leaning forward, Crow folded his arms against the table and let out his breath in a long exhale. As he continued to watch the noblemen and women eating and conversing with one another, he wondered if he would ever fit in well enough to do the same among them. It was a strange desire, especially since he had never wanted the approval of nobles before, but now that this place was his home, he found himself wishing that he fit in more—or at least that he felt more comfortable here. He could handle their constant disapproval up to a point, but he dreaded to think what his life would be like if the rest of the inner kingdom continued to despise him the way they did now. It was difficult to go about every day surrounded by people who glared and whispered behind his back.

After some time passed, Preston reappeared by his side with a plate piled high with food. The boy seemed to have learned quickly that the viceroy preferred to fill up on large portions, and for that, Crow was glad. He leaned back from the table as the attendant went about the usual routine of testing his food for poison, watching him with a hint of curiosity in his eye. “You’re surprisingly calm about eating food that could supposedly be tainted,” he commented.

Preston glanced at him as he took a small bite of bread. “It’s just part of my job,” he said with a shrug. “Besides, I’ve never seen anyone get poisoned in all my years at the castle. It seems unlikely that anyone would be killed that way now.”

“Then why do it?”

“Well, suppose someone did want to kill you,” Preston said.

“I’m sure there are plenty here who do,” Crow smirked.

“Right,” the boy nodded, unfazed. “If you do have an enemy here who wants to kill you, they would be much more likely to try poisoning your food if they saw you eating without a taste tester. I’m just here to keep someone like that from trying in the first place.”

“I guess that makes sense,” Crow admitted, looking over the crowd once more. It was unsettling to think that there could be someone in the Great Hall at that very moment who was biding their time to kill him. However, he wouldn’t put it past any of them. He could think of plenty of people who hated him enough to want him dead. It was why he still kept his guard up around them all, despite the fact that he was now their equal in rank. Nobles were deceitful and manipulative. If they were determined to get rid of him, it was going to take more than just the king’s opinion to stop them.

Almost as if on cue, Crow felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up as he got the sudden impression that he was being watched. His eyes flicked between the faces of the other people in the room until they landed on a man on the far side who was glaring at him venomously. The viceroy studied the stranger warily. He remembered this man from his titling ceremony—he was the one who had spoken out so adamantly against his father when it had been announced that he was going to be the next ambassador. He narrowed his eyes. Perhaps there was a reason for Preston to continue inspecting his meals after all.

When the attendant finished his task, he took a step back from the table and bowed before turning to leave the viceroy to eat his supper alone.

Crow watched him for a moment and then called after him, “Hang on.”

“Yes?” Preston turned back to him with a bemused look.

“Why don’t you have your dinner with me tonight?” Crow suggested. “I’ve seen where you go—that corner in the back by yourself. Why not just stay here?”

Preston’s eyes flickered toward the other people in the room before returning to the viceroy’s face. “It wouldn’t look good for you to be seen sharing a table with a servant,” he said leerily. “I don’t want to damage your reputation.”

“What reputation?” Crow laughed. “You mean the one where I’m hated as the most wanted thief in the kingdom?” He waved a hand at the open bench across from him. “Sit, sit. I don’t give a damn what those arrogant fools have to say about me.”

Preston wavered for a moment longer before he nodded, “A-Alright. I’ll just get my own food and be right back.”

“You’d better,” Crow grinned as the attendant hurried away.

--

For the rest of the evening, Crow spent his time with Preston. They didn’t speak much—mostly because the attendant was so soft-spoken—but the viceroy enjoyed it. Of course, the other noblemen and women in the Great Hall casted him more foul looks whenever they caught him dining with his own servant, but he didn’t mind. To him, the boy was much better company than any of them would ever be.

When he finished his meal, he waited for Preston to eat the last of his bread before they headed out of the Great Hall together. The attendant held his head low as they walked past the other nobles, seeming uncomfortable beneath their scrutinizing glares, so Crow rested a hand on his back to usher him along in much the same way as he would have done for any friend. Naturally, the familiar gesture only served to disgust the nobles more, but it seemed to encourage the attendant, who walked with his head a little higher by the time they reached the door.

Eventually, Crow returned to his bed chamber for the night and settled down to sleep. Feeling good about how he had treated his servant and excited about the prospect of finding Penelope tomorrow, it didn’t take long before he drifted off into a content slumber.

The next morning Penelope woke up at a fairly early hour. She stretched as the soft morning light stirred her from her peaceful sleep. Despite being a bit sleepy still, the knight did feel refreshed at least so she wasted no time in getting up and preparing for the day ahead, taking the time to unpack the items she had returned with. She also went ahead and changed, slipping on a clean pair of pants and new shirt. It was admittedly a bit nice to get out of the clothes she had been wearing, especially since they had grown rather dirty from all the traveling.

Set for the day ahead, she stepped out of the room and headed down the corridor, making her way towards the Great Hall. She didn't make it very far from her own door when Tybalt rounded the corner and focused his gaze on her. She dipped her head politely to the captain and met him halfway as she noticed his wave.

"Good timing, Vermillion." Tybalt grunted. "I was just about to stop by to tell you, you have day shifts for the next three days."

"Where am I positioned?" she asked.

"Third floor, first hallway." Tybalt responded curtly.

Penelope blinked in mild surprise. "That high up huh?" Since it was on the third floor, that meant it would be near the royal family. Usually only higher ranking or more experience guards took shifts there. Penelope didn't consider herself to be either of those so she was a bit caught off guard to suddenly not just one shift but three there.

"You and your father seem to be on good terms with the royal family so I see no reason not to put you there." Tybalt paused and crossed his arms over his chest. "Unless you'd prefer bottom floor."

"No, sir. Third floor is fine. Thank you." she said dipping her head respectfully. Tybalt just grunted and continued on his way. Penelope turned and did the same as she made her way to the Great Hall for breakfast. Stepping inside, she did a quick scan of the room for Crow or Naida. Having not seen the thief the day before, she hoped to be able to catch him at breakfast since it was unlikely she'd be around for dinner as she had a meeting with Alden and his father. Though she didn't spot Crow, she did spot Naida, who waved to get her attention. Hoping that she hadn't missed the viceroy, she headed over to join her friend, taking a seat across from her.

The next morning, Crow woke up to find that he wasn’t alone. Preston sat at the table in the room, thumbing through one of the books on the table. The viceroy sat up, resting his weight on the palm of one hand while he used the other to rub the sleep from his eyes. As he did, he noticed that the attendant had already set out new clothes for him at the bottom of the bed.

“You’re here early,” he commented, studying the boy curiously.

“You’ve been waking up early,” Preston replied with a shrug as he looked up from the book.

“Touché,” he yawned and slid down from the bed, pulling his linen shirt over his head and tossing it aside to change into the day clothes the servant had so neatly laid out for him. When he finished getting dressed, he glanced at the boy again. “I didn’t know you were literate.”

“I’m not,” Preston closed the book he had been looking at and gently set it back down with the others on the table.

Crow frowned, “Then what were you doing with that?”

“I just like the art,” the attendant shrugged. “A lot of the books in this castle have detailed illustrations. They’re interesting to look at.”

“I see,” Crow smirked amusedly as they headed into the corridor.

Preston hesitated for a moment before he added, “I like to draw. I’m not nearly as good as the artists who made the pictures in those books though.” He looked up at the viceroy a bit sheepishly. “I just use charcoal on stone… Looking at the work of people who are better than me gives me reason to try to get better.”

“Oh really?” Crow raised a brow. He’d had no idea that his attendant had such a skill. Since the peasants in the outer villages didn’t have much time to develop hobbies, he’d never met anyone else of his own class that had dabbled in art before. “You should show me some of your drawings sometime,” he went on with a grin. “I’d like to see what you’ve made.” Even though he didn’t know anything about art, he had enjoyed looking at pictures in books when he was a child, so he could at least appreciate them to a degree.

Preston’s eyes widened in obvious surprise. “Alright, I will,” he nodded, standing up a bit straighter. The eagerness in his voice made Crow wonder if anyone had ever asked to see his work before. However, sensing that it could be a sore spot for the boy, he decided not to ask.

They spent the rest of the walk talking idly until they reached the Great Hall. As soon as he stepped inside, Crow scanned the room excitedly in search of Penelope. He couldn’t wait to see her again after spending all of yesterday apart and was elated when he spotted her at a table with his sister. He didn’t bother to wait for Naida to wave to him before he made his way through the crowd to sit with them. The princess would probably just assume he was eager to see them after being alone before anyway.

“Morning, Collin,” Naida greeted him cheerfully when he reached the table.

“Morning,” Crow smiled back at her, relieved to finally be among friendly faces again. He moved to sit down next to his sister, but then paused when he noticed that she was resting her hands at her sides, preventing him from getting close. He rolled his eyes as he caught the devilish look on her face but said nothing as he stepped around to the other side of the table to sit next to Penelope instead.

Penelope struck up a conversation with Naida as she waited for her food. However, the conversation didn't last long as she spotted Crow walking over to join their table. The knight strained to keep a neutral expression as the viceroy stepped over to join them. After a day apart and being unsure if she'd get a chance to seem him that day, she was excited to find out that she hadn't missed him and that she'd at least get to spend some time with him that day. She noticed Naida pull the same stunt she had pulled with her before and let out a small sigh. However, she didn't object as Crow settled in besides her. "Morning." she greeted with a nod to him.

"I'm glad you're finally here! I was hoping I'd catch you this morning." Naida grinned. She grabbed a small box from besides her and presented it excitedly to the viceroy. "While we were in Bellmare yesterday, we decided to get you a small gift since you couldn't make it and to congratulate you on the promotion."

"Hold on. We?" Penelope smirked. "It was your decision."

"To get something sure but," she held up a finger with a mischievous glint in her gaze. "You were the one that picked out the gifts. Therefore, you're apart of this."

The knight chuckled and leaned back slightly as the servants arrived to place their food down on the table. Sh glanced down at her food as it arrived and then looked over at Naida. "Alright." she said glancing over at Crow with a small shrug. She saw no reason to argue further, even if the princess was clearly trying to use the gift to get the two together. Besides, she was a bit eager herself to see if the viceroy had liked what she had picked out.

Naida gave a pleased smirk and turned back to Crow with an eager gleam. "Go ahead and open it! I think you'll like what Penelope picked out for you." she said with a wink as she pushed the box over to him.
