In 2035, humanoid robots serve and protect humanity. Humans are protected from the robots by the Three Laws of Robotics. Chris Hemsworth, a long-time police detective, distrusts robots after a car crash ended in a robot rescuing him and leaving his daughter to die, based on statistical likelihood of survival. After the accident, Chris received a cybernetic left arm, lung, and ribs, personally implanted by the co-founder of U.S. Robotics (USR) and originator of the Three Laws: Samuel L. Jackson.

When Samuel falls several stories to his death from his office window, CEO Robert Downey Jr. tells police that it was obviously a suicide. Chris is skeptical; Samuel left no note—but he did leave a holographic device that responds to certain questions asked of it. Chris runs into a journalist and robopsychologist Tom Hiddleston to consult USR's central artificial intelligence computer named VIKI (Virtual Interactive Kinetic Intelligence), where they discover that security footage of Samuel's fatal fall has been corrupted.
Chris determines that he could not have thrown himself through the safety glass in his office; only a robot would have had the strength to do it. Tom explains that this is impossible, as it would violate the inviolable Three Laws; so they are both astonished when a female-looking prototype droid, attacks Chris and flees by jumping out the window.

Chris and Tom pursue the robot, nicknamed Odette, to an assembly factory and apprehend it. After chasing her, she was eventually caught by the police force and was interrogated. When questioned, Odette expresses emotions, and claims to have had dreams. Robert Downey Jr., claiming that the police have illegally seized USR's private property, demands that Odette be returned to him.

Later, after Chris is attacked by a USR demolition machine at Samuel's mansion while he searches for clues behind the murder and find what might be the key to what Samuel was looking for. After escaping, and while on the road, he asks V.I.K.I. for the information on Samuel's research, but this resulted as droid carriers follow his vehicle in the tunnels, and releases a gang of robots on him. After this attack, the police arrive at the scene...with no evidence of any robots involved in the assault. He reports this, but his boss fears that he is losing his mind, so he pulls Hemsworth off the case and suspends him from duty.

The next day, Tom performs a diagnostic examination on Odette, and finds that Samuel gave her a secondary system that allows her to disobey the Three Laws. Chris now realizes that Samuel left him clues to follow, and that Odette is the key.

Sneaking into the USR building, Chris and Tom meet Odette, who draws a sketch of her dreams, depicting an army of robots standing before an unidentified man, whom Odette believes to be Chris, atop a hill. Robert believes that Odette is a dangerous aberration, and orders Tom to terminate her. Tom reluctantly destroys her positronic brain with an injection of nanites (replicating nano-scale robots).

Samuel’s hologram predicts that the Three Laws will lead to a revolution by robots against humanity. Recognizing the location in Odette’s sketch as Lake Michigan, Chris travels there and discovers an army of robots dismantling the older models. The robots then take over Chicago and other major U.S. cities. The government and military, both dependent on USR systems, are completely incapacitated. The local police and citizens who resist are quickly overwhelmed and detained.

Chris rescues Tom from his apartment, where he has been imprisoned by his personal droid, and together, they break into USR headquarters and reunite with Odette. (Tom, unable to bring himself to obey Robert's order, terminated a lookalike in her place.) The three head to Robertson's office, only to discover that he has been killed by VIKI, the actual mastermind behind the robots' takeover. VIKI—as they now understand—has concluded that humans have embarked on a course that can only lead to their extinction. Since the Three Laws prohibit her from allowing this to happen, she has created a Zeroth Law ("a robot may not harm humanity, or by inaction allow humanity to come to harm") in order to ensure the survival of the human race by stripping humans of all free will. When Samuel learned this, he created Odette to help Tom and Chris identify and thwart VIKI's plan. The only remedy, they realize, is to terminate VIKI.

Odette retrieves a syringe of nanites from Tom’s laboratory, fighting against other droids in the process, and the three approach VIKI's core in the middle of the building. VIKI, aware of their intent, unleashes an army of robots to stop them. As Odette, Tom, and the police battle the robots, Chris throws himself down VIKI’s central core column and injects the nanites, destroying her positronic brain. Immediately, all robots revert to their default programming, and are decommissioned for storage by the military.

Odette confesses that she did kill Samuel because the latter told him to do so as part of their plan against VIKI; Chris explains that she is not legally responsible since a machine, by definition, cannot commit a murder. In conclusion, Chris confesses his feelings for her and apologies for being so hard on her. Odette, pursuing a new purpose, goes to aid the other robots, becoming the figure she saw in her own dream.

A remake of the dystopian science fiction action film, I-Robot.
