Appearance

Description: Annella has a round, slightly freckled face and wide doe-like eyes (as said by her grandmother).  During training, Annella has long, dark brown hair that is usually tied up into a messy ponytail to keep away from her face, with a few wisps of shorter strands pulled out from the sides to frame her face better and with a somewhat messily chopped fringe over her forehead. She also has blue eyes, behind her thickly framed rectangular glasses. 

With a high metabolism, the girl tends to remain lean and small, not helped by the somewhat meagre servings of food given to the trainees nor the amount of training she does during her time at the camp. She has small, slumped shoulders, making her relaxed but giving her a somewhat defeated look to her. 

Annella chooses to wear a square-necked dark grey tunic under her uniform, that being the only customised thing she does. During the more casual outings, she tends to wear a white, long sleeved shirt under a dark blue-green tartan patterned dress, reaching just above her ankles with some flats.

Ancestral Origin: Scottish-German descent.

Body Type: Small stature, standing at only 5’1 (or 155cm) and weighing approximately 106lbs.  

Personality
Description: Annella is reserved and quiet, preferring to listen than to speak to others and rarely starts conversations. Due to her not having the chance to make friends and build relationships properly when younger, she is socially inept. However, when approached, she can be friendly and open (though awkwardly). Annella is very responsible; having an almost overbearing personality to those she cares about. 

Annella rarely tells others how she feels, thinking that she would be a burden if she felt anything other than happiness. 

She is devoted to helping and taking care of others. She is very altruistic, enjoying helping people, no matter who it is.
Having grown up taking care of her grandparents, Annella developed a huge sense of responsibility, thinking that it was up to her to take care of those who need her help. She cannot stand it if her actions cause danger to others, and is willing to take responsibility for any actions she does.

She’s always there for those she cares deeply about, whether by lending an ear or helping them with a task. She doesn’t mind waiting and following up on someone if she feels the need to. 

She doesn’t like leaving a task half done, preferring to keep following up until the task is done or she’s ultimately forced to stop bugging everyone. 

Annella tries to think positively, even in a negative situation. This brings a fresh outlook to a grim situation, even if what she says is naïve.

As mentioned above, thinking positively no matter the situation is something she can’t help doing, however she could even push being an idealist, striving for goals or a scenario that is just impossible, no matter how good it sounds. Coupled in with her persistence, it could even lead to her being stubborn about her beliefs and ideals.

Her idealist or optimistic views can sometimes lead to her being too naïve. She tries to avoid thinking bad of other people (see family for reason why) and  even makes her vulnerable to manipulation. Since she had no friends previously, it was easy for those to use her over-helpful personality to con her. 

In a childish way, Annella refuses to tell anyone if something is bothering her. This is because she thinks that if she tells someone, they’ll find her a burden and leave her, which is why she tries to bottle up her negative emotions until it leads to her breaking point (see family).

Reckless During her breaking point, it can lead to her acting irrationally and even recklessly; she joined the military to avenge her parents, too guilt ridden to listen to her ill grandparents’ advice. 

Her persistence can sometimes make her overstep her boundaries, making her too pushy to some. What she considers to be concern can lead to her being excessively protective, to the point of being annoying.

Wants: She initially wanted to join the Corps in order to assist humanity however realised that her grandparents needed her a lot more, ultimately changing her decision and enlisting for the Garrison. She also wishes to buy back the family bakery in the future, to keep it running once she retired from the military.

Fears: Her main fear is not living long enough to provide the means for her grandparents’ medication. It’s also pretty given that she fears losing anyone else she cares about, but honestly who doesn’t?

Background

Annella grew up within a fairly rich household. Both her parents’ income would go into the rent while her grandparents would work at the family bakery where there would be additional income to support the family. At first, she was sent to a small school within the district, however soon her grandmother fell ill and it was then that Annella had to take over her grandmother’s job to help provide the money for the medication. This made her unable to concentrate between both work and school, especially at such a young age, and soon she was pulled out of school. 

At this point, she was unable to make any friends nor spend much time out for herself to find any friends and which is why Annella is socially inept now. Soon, it was her grandfather who fell ill and it was even harder for her to maintain both the house and the business. Just when things were slowly settling down, Annella got the message that her parents were killed in action. Guilt and grief ate at the girl until she finally sold the bakery in a way of paying for a few years of medication while she enlisted into the military to avenge her parents and help pay for the medical bills.

Her relationship with her parents was almost non-existent. As Annella grew older, she began to resent her parents for seemingly preferring to risk their lives rather than to help her and her grandparents. It was selfish, but she was only a child. Not wanting to burden her already stressed elders, Annella began to slowly form a shell, where she’d bottle up any negative emotions and for a while it actually worked. 

Well… until the series of unfortunate events struck. First her grandmother fell ill, next her grandfather, until she was left alone to help pay for the medicine using the money earnt from the bakery. Whatever money her parents sent over was used for the household, until even that stopped. On the day she found out that her parents were killed, Annella was delivered a letter that was written by her mother years ago, stating her regrets for giving her up and explaining their reasons for abandoning the child to the elders. All the resentment melted away into guilt, for being selfish, and grief for her loss and all the emotions that was bottled up finally spilled and she had her first breakdown.

Recklessly, Annella sold the successful bakery to a neighbour and joined the military. Initially, she wanted to join the Survey Corps so that she could avenge her parents – feeling that they would only be proud of her if she followed after them, no matter how stupid that sounded – and now at fifteen years of age, Annella was finally within the 132nd Trainees Regiment.

She had a better relationship with her paternal grandparents compared to her parents. However, Annella always found herself taking care of her grandparents more, especially as the years went on – skipping school to assist with the business, or making dinner (only once she was old enough) – and it forced the young girl to mature earlier than she should have. This situation only made Annella an altruistic and responsible person as she grew older.

By the time her grandmother fell ill, Annella had already dropped out of school to help her grandfather with the business by taking over her grandmother’s job. Because she was too busy with helping her elders, she never found any time for herself to make friends or experience life as a typical child should have, making her the socially inept girl she is now.

Once she had her breakdown when she received her mother’s letter, she had joined the Trainees Regiment in a fit of recklessness. Whatever money that she had received for selling the bakery, she used to buy the medication that they required, at least until she was able to graduate where she would be given a chance to get a stable income.
