As said by the crazy guy with the piece of paper, after the End most people ended up taking one of two sides: Mercenary, where the pay is great but the job is hard. Or Bandit, where the pay is the best and the job is easy. The rest farm with whatever fertile soil is left and sell it to the big cities for reasonable sums of money.
If you're wondering about what the state of the world is in after the huge disaster, then just take a look outside. All nice and sunny, right? Now imagine that in a desert and 40 degrees warmer. Now make that seemingly endless. There's the desert. "But wait!" You say "What if I live in southern Florida?" Well, there are swamps but those are usually forbidden for good reason. Mutants crawl up and down the swamps. They're ugly, dangerous, and their heads don't go for much. Also, you will waste too many bullets trying to kill them. They're just the worst. How do you expect to survive things like this scorching desert and mutated swamps? After the End, scientists began working on suits that keep you air-conditioned and safe from mutants, for the most part. Bullets'll still tear you a new one if you aren't careful, but if you're going out into the desert I would assume that you are extra careful.
If you're more inclined to stay in the city, then I suggest you give up and go home right now. If you live in the city, you will be forced to either join the army, or farm like the rest, unless you have a job already, like being a professional mercenary *wink* *wink
