Epic adventures oftren require some extensive world-building exercises, exercises which I'm admittedly burnt out on. I GM enough games as is.
I'd actually prefer to do something more interpersonal, maybe even introspective. Normally, I'd like to establish a theme and explore it. By "theme", I don't necessarily mean a simple genre label either, such as horror or fantasy, but rather the tackling of tough questions that allow characters to evolve:
Who am I?
Will I ever love again?
When the mind can inhabit any vessel it desires, what becomes of identity?
What are my ultimate limits?
How do I protect what's precious to me?
What do I want in life?

It's the common thread the ties together the story. The setting and genres are incidental details of how one explores such themes.

Honestly, I'm in this for the raw human connections (i.e. emotional, economic, physical) among an interesting cast of characters, not solely the action, adventure, or romance.

Edit:
TL;DR - Not really in the mood for the grand adventure stuff. And after thinking about it a bit more, something focusing on self-discovery or identity sounds really appealing at the moment.
I have a spare a bit of spare time I could dedicate to an RP.
Although... I'm more in the mood to brainstorm a fresh setting and plot than work with a fandom. Would you be up for that?
I have fond memories of the Vandread series, so using something similar as a setting does pique my interest.

Depending on where you wanted to take the story, I'd like to give it a shot. =P
Vexing was this extremely ornate and flawlessly polished artifact; the liturgies and incantations engraved upon the sword's fuller were not trivial prayers as Castiel had initially thought. She removed her helmet to get a better view and scrutinized the inscriptions, stitching together scattered scraps of lore to decipher the seemingly innocuous designs. Piece-by-piece the picture became clear: it was a well-crafted ward against the influence of heresy and sanctified to protect from the taint of Chaos. Without a proper desecration, no heretic could ever hope to wield it, let alone touch it. Though, she was still very curious as to what effect it might have.
She cast a glance at one of the Khornate cultist who had just entered the room. "The spoils of war!" She gestured to the sword. "You're entitled it! I'm sure it will serve you well in battle."
The warrior strode toward the holy blade, at first with confidence, but as he drew near his features began to tense and the brimming confidence turned to abject terror. He stopped a few paces away.
Interesting~
A smug grin tugged at her lips, but she hid it with a stern grimace "Does a mere sword scare you, little one? The Blood God has a low opinion of cowards."
The heretic gulped as beads of sweat formed at his neck. So unsettling was merely being in the presence of this sword that words failed to move him.
A rare find indeed, this accursed blade
A twinge of need went through her; a feeling not born of lust, but of an instrinsic drive to corrupt and destroy. Like a child want to tear the wings from a helpless insect, she wanted to defile this holy relic more than anything, but under the circumstances the task was beyond her.
Bitterness welled inside her. Better to destroy it than waste my time.
She unleashed her frustrations upon the blade with a brutal kick, but the sundering went awry. The hardy armor of her boot did nothing to protect her from the searing heat which burned her foot. Throbbing pain licked at her heel. "Damn, this blasted ward!"
Knowing better than to touch it directly, Castiel mused for a moment to calm herself and evaluate the resources at hand. Hand...Ah! She quickly strode over to the motionless corpse of the priest she'd battled earlier. With a simple swipe of her sword, the priest's hand was neatly severed at the wrist. The cunning sister tested the blade with this presumably 'holy' appendage. The fingers didn't catch fire or explode violently. No effect.
She realized then, the priet's garbs might be sanctified as well; they seemed exquisitely crafted, so it was likely. As the ideas fell into place, her mission became clear. She would make it her personal goal to desecrate this relic. She'd learn its mysteries, corrupt its sanctity, and gift it to a particularly vicious warbard out of spite.
Castiel tore the holy robes from the clergymen and cut off the other hand, using both hands as tools to methodically wrap the warded antique in the sacred cloth. She tried to pick it up herself but the gold in-lay of the robes burned the apostate's hand. Again? She had no intention of dragging this damnedable object around behind her. She relieved one of the dead armsmen of his fatigues and cut the various straps and belts away. Covered and bound in mundane materials, with the sacred robes acting as a buffer, she finally was able to heft the loot onto her weapon harness.
Feeling rather accomplished and confident in her ingenuity, Castiel scoured the room one last time for anything worth looting - something portable, which won't be too much a burden. Two bowls of holy water caught her attention; she might be able to use them for rituals later. Recent memories flashed in her mind and suggested the two dead armsmen have no need of their standard issue water flasks. She put them to better use.
The only thing left that truly invoked her wickedness to do some daring was the garish hulking statue of the much beloved 'emperor'. If left undisturbed, she knew she would regret her inaction. With a sigh, she drew her blade and carefully carved a series of Chaos Runes at the statue's base.
Smearing the slightly congealed blood from armor and blade into formulaic patterns, Castiel prepared a dark altar through which the power of the Warp could infuse her unholy prayers. If the Ruinous Power see it fit, corruption would mar this idol - a wonderful gift for the imperialists sure to find and salvage the remnants of this wrecked ship.
She began to sing a vile chorus meant to twist the energies of the warp and dispel whatever blessing was upon the statue. A stale, frigid wind flailed about Castiel as her song became more feverish, matching the intensity of her prayer. Words and lyrics poured from her lips in a language none could comprehend, save only her dark gods. Her rhythmic lines of pseudo-gothic brimmed with power and hate, slowly whittling away the holiness of the statue. When at last she finished her ritualistic melody, she eyed her work with an impish grin. The idol's bright golden sheen shined with a subtlely darker hue. The polish seemed dull and the shadow clinging to its many crevices and moldings seemed darker. The Chaos Runes at the base glowed with the red of smoldering coals.
"The Gods are good!" she breathed with sarcastic giggle.
Much of the shrine was vacant when she finally decided to leave. The looting had begun and they were scarcely interested in her esoteric rituals. First priority was to secure an exit, but with both ships entangled in a heap of ruined metal that would prove difficult. Perhaps there are some undamaged shuttle craft... I-
Her musing were cut short by the heated words being exchanged between two different groups of cultists. One party was the familiar khornate warriors she had lead before, and the other were slaaneshi. The argued endlessly over trivial matters: whose patron god was better, which beliefs were more acceptable, whose god could kick the other's ass, but it seemed the subject of who deserved the spoils of war was the primary point of contention. Their incessant rambling and ruckus could be heard all down the corridor.
With a petulant scoff, Castiel resolved to end their petty squabble with word or blade, whichever got the job done quicker. She approached the group with her dark-feather wings spread wide and bellowed aloud. "Bickering over such trifles?! Do you not know, that all Chaos is glorified by your efforts? It doesn't matter if you murder in the name of Khorne or Slaanesh. The blood flows the Khorne, and Slaanesh indulges the suffering. You can't kill anyone without exalting them both."
Their initial reactions were of surprise and hostility, but the wordsmith sister overpowered them with force of personality and undeniable tenants of heretical worship. None could oppose her. Their dispositions gradually lulled into awestruck silence, as Castiel gave a brief sermon and instructed them on the nature of Chaos, playing equally to each group's individual proclivities and beliefs.
The slaaneshi cultist, however, caught her attention. Their uniforms were well-maintained and their armor finely crafted; they carried a different air, a different temperament than the ones she had met aboard the Unrepentant. They're obviously from another vessel...The question is whose?

Although silent until now, the apparent leader of the Slaaneshi group approached Castiel, took her measure, and declared their allegiance to Prince Alaistair Godwin Lafayette of the vessel Dark Desire.
Too easy~
"I am the Scion of Chaos, Pontifica Castiel Artemisia, bearer of the unholy word. You may serve a prince, but never forget the Ruinous Powers are your true masters."
The Slaaneshi leader bowed in reverence. "Pontifica, it is my honor to stand before you. Allow me to take you to see my Prince. He has said to bring all truly wonderous things to him."
Almost as if on cue, a message blares from the ship-wide vox. "This is Prince Alaistair Godwin Lafayette Captain and Lord of the vessel Dark Desire.... Forces who once served Beraesh, surrender yourselves to the forces of the Dark Desire and be welcomed as future brothers aboard my magnificient vessel."
The leader turned to Castiel with a smug grin on his face. "Our Prince has taken the bridge, we will lead you to him."
Seeing no other way out of this forsaken place, she acquiesced. "Very well."

Castiel and her escort from the Dark Desire preceded leisurely towards the bridge. Along the way, she ran into Cremutus, a warpsmith she'd only met in passing. He kept to work - quiet really. He mistakenly addressed Castiel as "Apostate". While an accurate descriptor, the title was not fit for this sororitas. She would have let it slide, but not in present company. She had a facade to maintain, guests to entertain.
The two shouted back and forth, trying to assert authority over one another, but in the end Castiel overwhelmed the taciturn legionaire. Outclassed and disadvantaged, he very quickly believed it better to hold is tongue. Wise decision.
The battle raged through the command deck.
No restraint.
No mercy.
Only.
Pure.
Unadulterated.
Violence.

Castiel had the lead charge in slaying the first guardsmen she came across. They were of little challenge. Even the cultists, which hurled themselves past her, expended more effort clawing over one another to pounce on the enemies ranks than on murdering the few fools brave enough to step in their path.
With all manner of rending blades, they hacked and cleaved, bit and snarled, ripping through their foes without a second thought. Castiel did nothing to organize their number. These brutes seemed to be at their best, when nothing held their rage in check.

Practiced footwork carried her over the carnage littering the floor as she the quickly carved a path through the bloodshed, rounding a corner into a corridor junction where a handful of armsmen huddled in defensive formation around a cogitator. They were already embroiled in conflict with another boarding party from the Unrepetant. More importantly, they were too preoccupied to notice her approach. With a grim determination set in her stride and a few thrusts from her wings, the fallen sister dropped on them with her fell blade, dispatching them with haste as the friendly fire from the boarding party's volley ricocheted off of her power armour.
She pried the weapons away from the armsmen's rigid grip and tossed them at two of her fellow insurgents, once their salvo subsided. With a smug grin, they caught the guns and ran off through a demolished office to regroup with their team who wasted little time in moving to the next skirmish.

"It has to be around here somewhere." She grumbled impatiently.

At last she came to a jagged hallway. Red splotches and black scorch marks marred the walls. Gored bodies lay strewn along her path, resting in pools of still-warm blood. She floated nimbly over the gore, wings aloft, only to be spotted by two armsmen with shotguns. They fired without hesitation, but the shots fell short of Castiel, who stood unperturbed at the end of the corridor. "They must have set up a choke point."

Behind them, was the entrance to an imperial shrine and a priest delivering an obnoxiously pious oratory. In one hand, he held a scroll of litanies and the other a chain sword. Castiel could feel her old wounds begining to burn as a familiar hatred rose to meet the fiery sensation. The world to fell away as her focus narrowed onto the priest, who should've been glad there was helmet preventing her cold, cruel glare from freezing him in place.

The growing tension set her jaw and gritted her teeth. It would be dangerous to advance on their barricade. Nearly forty meters of corridor, littered with limp corpses and slick with blood, were between Castiel and her prey. A thin haze coalesced around her, warping and twisting the very essence of her being. Her substance melted away and only an eerie astral likeness remained as she willed herself into the veil between the Materium and Immaterium. She rushed headlong towards the barricade. The ghostly visage of a horned flying demon charged at the armsmen full tilt. They fired wildly at the nightmarish spectre. Each spray of pellets from their shotguns bit into the walls and floor, but not into their intended target.

With unnerving silence, Castiel drew close. The fabric of reality wrapped around her, reinstantiated her corporeal form into existence. Her wings spread wide, the hate-filled sororitas fell upon the priest with her blade, all the weight of her diving charge into the power of her swing. Tighmaevril carved into the man's shoulder, ripping through his lightly armored vestments. The holy man groaned in pain, but recovered quickly. He stood firm as a grimace contorted his features. He had finally recognized the iconic power armor and sororitas trappings.
"For one once held so high, the emperor weeps at how far you've fallen." He seemed to feel genuinely reviled at the thought of a traitor in his presence.

With a iron-set jaw, he dropped his scriptures, gripped his chain sword with both hands, and slash up through Castiel's guard. She took quick notice of the tactic. Although she was able to swat the ripsaw blade away with her shield, the priest's martial prowess was commendable, but nevertheless lacking in comparison. Castiel thrust at his midsection, the tip of her sword aiming for the sweet spot between the ribs where it could skewer the heart, but it caught cloth instead as the priest nimbly leaned aside.
The two exchanged blows one after another dancing back and forth to the rhythm of clashing metal. He was good, but not good enough. With each swing Tighmaevril cut deeper and deeper into the priest's body, bits of blood splattering to the floor and walls, while the priest's own weapon flailed helplessly against Castiel's tough armor. The two armsmen behind the combatants stood at the ready, waiting for an opening to fire a volley into the Sister's back, but they were overrun. The cultists she had inspired with hate finally stumbled onto the scene. At the sight of the mortal struggle, their bloodlust returned and they renewed their assault. The small horde crashed into the armsmen and slew them without hesitation.

Fatigue betrayed finally betrayed the priest's guarded stance. Castiel seized the opportunity. The first cut bit into his shoulder and cleaved through his chest, but the reverse swing sliced clean through his leg just above the knee. A torrent of red poured from the stump and pooled on the ground. The priest helplessly murmured a prayer to protect the passing of his soul as the fear of his own mortality extinguished the lights in his eyes. She stuck the tip of her blade through his ribs, tearing into his heart, then twisted. His bones snapped with a wicked crack. An old feeling of satisfaction swelled in Castiel's chest as drew her sword out of his corpse.

She gathered her calm and turned to the two junior priests, each wielding a mace inscribed with liturgies of hate, and each trembling with fear as they tried hold on to some measure of hope. The cultists, having already finished the wanton slaughter of the scattered ratings and armsmen, overwhelmed the clergymen before she could kill them herself. Pity. The remainder of the shrine's attendants were slain despite their incessant mewlings and screams of agony. Castiel spared no time in running her blade through each and every one of them in turn.

When at last the room was cleared, Castiel approached the massive golden idol of the god-emperor. Pews to either side were strangely clean despite the rampant bloodshed, the various sacrements and relics, too, seemed no worse for wear. At the foot of the decadent statue rested a large bejeweled sword. Intricate litanies wove a beautiful pattern down the length of the blade. She puzzled over the inscriptions.

"Curious item..."
I was able to write up quite a bit of my post tonight while I had free time in between chores/errands, so I think thursday evening I should be able to finish it.
The Unrepentant's belly rumbled with the cries of war and rage making its appetite for destruction known. Another unit of combatants rallied to call of an irresistible, fiery voice. Gathered together in a half-mangled corridor were a dozen khornate cultists. All of them scattered about the ship as a result of the collision and each of them assembled at Castiel's word with the promise of blood and glory.

The quakes and clangs of battle felt closer now as they reverberated into wrecked hall Castiel had filled with a motley unit of crewman. The firefights were moving towards them. Some of them shuddered, not with fear, but anticipation. Others were obviously anxious to move out. The fires in their eyes were the same though. All of them wanted a piece of the action, a chance to prove their worth.

Castiel sat perched upon the collateral of the warship's ditch effort: a twisted bulkhead bowed into low-hanging arch. The red emergencies lights created dim streaks of red that glinted along the curves of her power armor and reflected in her dark eyes.
Another shock wave resounded through the hall as the last of the cultists joined her entourage. A sly grin crept onto her lips. It's time. She stowed the grin before stepping onto her makeshift seat, treating it as though it were her own pulpit.

"Can you hear it? The sound and fury of battle calls to us. Those corpse-worshiping wretches wait for you to butcher them with blade and bullet." Castiel unsheathed her glimmering longsword, Tighmaevril, and with a flourish of her leathery, black wings held it high with the confidence of a king brandishing his scepter. "Khorne demands carnage! Their blood his His blessing. Take it! Their skulls are trophies. Claim them! Show them the wrath of the Blood God!"
The heated words that escaped her lips were unwavering and sure of victory. She possessed a strange radiance which stoked the fires of emotion and asserted somehow the certainty of Khorne blessing. The ruthless fighters cheered at the fierce rhetoric, pumping their fists and weapons into the air while shouting. She could feel the hall seething with their bloodlust, a palpable storm of fervor.
She truly cares not for which god she her audience praises, only that it is a God of Chaos. It fulfills her now.

"That's right! Cast down the idols! Destroy the temples! Slay the priests! Show these fools that they worship nothing more than a rotting corpse!"
The crowd howled with approval.
"Show me the strength of your devotion! Drown these worms in the blood of the fallen!" She thrusted her blade toward the symphony of clamor and combat lingering at the end of the hall. "CHARGE!"
Her war cry broke the floodgates of their already weakened restraint. And with that, they were off. The small horde of warmongers rushed headlong down corridor towards the command deck. With her true objective in mind, Castiel led them in. The writhing mass of unchained ferocity and rage-filled warriors stayed close on her heels.
So~ I've been working a so much more than I expected the past few days that I've barely had time to sleep. (Something on the order of 35-37 hours in the last 3 days). If all goes well, I should have enough time after work tomorrow, since it's a short day.

The fact that my post is like 75% done makes the situation even more irritating.
That's for each weapon training bought from our experience pool, not the ones we're granted from starting talents, correct? =o
Otherwise that could get cray-cray
