Nope I'm still dead
Yes, modern era. All that is fine and I definitely know what you mean with the backstory, hah.

@Bonjour xx Don't sweat it!
Kaaili nodded in approval and closed her eyes to think, hoping that the explanation wouldn't frighten poor little Rudder too much. "We will find food," she agreed, "and we will find out about whoever howled, but we must be careful." She took a couple of pensive steps down the rocky slope and made an effort to keep her ears standing straight in a show of false confidence. "We can't let Rudder out of our sight, so that leaves only one to hunt...unless the howler is worthy of trust." Her hackles raised at the thought of facing a stranger, but she shook the dust out of her fur and continued to lead the way slowly, unsure of herself.

There was something heavy caught in Luz's net. In fact, it made her raft bob downwards slightly, so in hopes of preserving her life she began to paddle toward the shore. Worried as she was by the immediate threat of drowning, though, when she looked down and saw a massive tangle of tentacles, all she could do was wonder if she had any recipes involving jellyfish. Grunting, she hauled the net up and then nearly dropped it with a loud swear. When they were close to shore, Luz secured the net and pulled on her boots. Dinner would have to wait.
She put the net and the half-human it contained over her shoulder and started to hike, gasping, toward camp to share her discovery.
Maan I had Luz come to the lake because lots of water=advantage for mermaid but NOW...mwaha!
Looks interesting. I think I'll work on a sheet after school.
nothing gold stays ponyboy

The fish trap, woven from plant stems that Luz had pulled from the ground on the way, waited patiently for victims as it was set in the cool lake water. Luz was surprised at how clear and pristine it was when she waded in, and she took a moment to simply enjoy the feeling of sand on her toes. Then her head cleared and she headed back to the shore, where she started to weave a net. She planned to raft out where the water was good and deep, and simply scoop up whatever fish were there: they were likely too stupid to know that humans were a threat to be hidden from.
The net and the raft both took a good sum of time, and by the time Luz had finished, she felt too tired to fish. That couldn't stop her though, as she did have a crew to feed. She pushed the raft into the water and got on, putting the net in the water.
Luz = Bear Grylls
Luz followed Drake back to camp with her hands in her pockets. As Drake was being tickled she just looked moodily toward the hut in which an orange-haired woman slept; she had her suspicions after the attack but reasoned that she couldn't be a huge threat, not if she'd fainted upon seeing Blythe. When the doctor started to get to work on the boy's leg, Luz turned around. Sure, the injury looked bad, at least from what she'd seen of it. And yes, there had been a woman that Luz was sure hadn't been aboard the ship but...well, she couldn't just not make dinner, and fish had been her plan.

"I'm going to the lake," she announced. "If I don't catch enough fish, we're having grubs tonight." She'd seen a bunch of the maggoty-looking things in a rotting piece of wood when they had set up camp, and all she could think had been, Mm, that's some good protein right there. Without giving anyone time to reply, she started to hike off.
